Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 31st through Aug. 6th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Did I mention it being ten million degrees here? And that’s really kinda all I got. Going to the gym this evening. But brain not functioning much beyond that. It is playing Brave at me, which is fine, it keeps me awake.

    • I was sad to see that on the 50 anniversary of the clock tower shooting, Texas “celebrated” by allowing guns to be brought into classrooms. :(

I am not sure that Trump is ill – the NPD is enough to account for all of his behaviour. We don’t often see it allowed to continue unabated because in normal circumstances, people would simply ignore the person and move on. Unfortunately for us, he is one of the two people who will be President of the United States on January 20, 2017 and he can’t be ignored.

  2. Good morning, Meese, and it’s another gray, ugly day in NoVa, with high humidity and the chance of thunderstorms. Huh! They usually don’t materialize. It’s 73 F. now, going up to 87 F. later.

Don’t know why, but I seem to be permanently p.o.’d nowadays. It might have something to do with small-handed buffoon (hesitate to call him a billionaire when he hasn’t even released his tax returns). The news is always about him and not about our candidate. Heard a Rethug reporter yesterday on the car radio bemoaning the fact that no one is talking about Hillary’s emails, but only about Trump’s latest. It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good, right?

Part II of “Jolyon” is now posted in Fiction under “Just Grazin’,” and I’ll post Part III later today.

Now I’m off to find the missing cauliflower that’s destined to be turned into “rice” as a backdrop for the Scampi we’re having for dinner. Back later, and in the meantime, wishing everyone a good day!

    • I think that what Trump wants more than anything is to be the center of attention. To the extent that the lemmings in the press follow him around, breathlessly reporting his every burp, he will have that. And when his outrageousness fails to get press attention, he will simply escalate. He doesn’t just crave the limelight, he requires the limelight to survive.

Our candidate will go about her business professionally and, in the end, Donald Trump will be a footnote in history: the man who Whigged Out the 2016 Republican Party and destroyed it.

  3. Ha!

Notice what they do to Trump’s hands to get him ready to appear in public!!

  4. Morning all! Got some nice rain here yesterday so maybe all my plants won’t shrivel up after all!

Jan, I think you’ve got it exactly right – Trump HAS to be the center of attention, and that’s why he’s campaigning at all. He said something at a rally yesterday, though, about “I could be having a very nice life, I didn’t have to do this” that makes me wonder if he’s thinking about dropping. But – ok, tin foil hat conspiracy time – I think it’s possible he’s deep in hock to the Russians in some way, and that Putin is directly or indirectly keeping his campaign afloat, on the off chance he can swing the election. Even more tin foil – would we be able to stop the Russians from hacking into our electronic voting systems? Ok, that’s a scary horror story, I’ll stop now, but Trump’s Russian connections really need to be fully investigated. Oh, and here’s an interesting little analysis by a retired speech pathologist on Trump’s speech patterns and mental state –

    http://www.liberalamerica.org/2016/07/22/this-speech-expert-thinks-trump-has-a-disorder-heres-why-video/

ok, off to do some stuff – everyone have a great day!

  5. Good morning, 60 and partly sunny in Bellingham. Emma and I enjoyed our day together yesterday. She is a smart observant young woman, but the complexities of a curved, interfaced waistband with a decorative seam was a sewing challenge for both of us…..lots to learn for her, and lots to remember for me!

I’m so frustrated with the state of my knees though. I could barely make it up the stairs to bed last night. If this is a permanent change and not the flare up I hope it is I’m going to have to face some hard realities, :::sigh:::

So today will be another careful day, but I do want to go to the bookstore with Sophie. I would like to shop with her for a new school outfit as well but I don’t know if my knees will cooperate.

Dee, my very best birthday wishes. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to share these morning moments, and to read your wise posts. I deeply appreciate all I am learning. Thank you!

  6. Another 75 just after dawn, open and air until left for work, heading for 90s with 110s heat index readings type day. Not as sunny as it could be, but good enough – I got 20 KWHs yesterday and at least so far on track to do it again today. Diana, your weather sounds like what we had here for an unfortunately large part of July. I guess the “system” shifted east at least at the mid/sourthern end.

I am still engaged with trying to introduce the real Hillary to my aunt, the one whose church sends out RWNJ screeds about her (and Obama and just about any Dem). Every time I think I might be getting through, she forwards me another one. At least she’s asking about them rather than sending them as evidence that I’m wrong. Dem HQ is in the process of getting set up and will have the grand opening Saturday. After that I’ll be staffing it on Saturdays from noon til 4 pm until 11/5. Early voting for a library bond election started this morning – library hasn’t had a funding increase in 58 years. It’s not likely to win considering the number of deadbeats (people who want their services but don’t want to pay for them) around here, but I did my part. (And a bit more, I think I also talked the guy who cuts my hair into voting for it, too. W00t!) Grabbed some voter registration forms while I was at the Courthouse although not entirely sure when/where I’ll try to get them completed. Still working on that plan.

    Late in today because of voting and 6-week overdue haircut plus a meeting. Now need to get some actual work done. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, meese! Wednesday …

It is 73 degrees in Madison on its way up to 84. The forecast calls for cloudy skies and a chance for thunderstorms. It looks like the super-hot weather that had been in the forecast will miss us.

Holy mackeral, what an election! I got whiplash following the latest idiocy from the Trump campaign. Someone pointed out that yesterday was only the 5th day of the general election – how will we survive! President Obama lashed Republican leadership, and congressmen, to the sinking ship by telling them to unendorse their nominee. Now they can’t! Trump refuses to endorse Ryan or McCain so now they can’t unendorse or they look like it is because of their elections rather than his awful comments. And as an example of our cowardly press, a Trump spokesperson blamed President Obama for the death of Captain Khan in 2004 because of his administrations changes in rules of engagement. Wolf Blitzer let that insane lie go unchallenged during the interview, when it might have mattered, and issued a “fact check” later. Did he not know that President Obama was not sworn in until 2009? Or do they just not care when the camera$ are rolling. I guess people are entitled to their own facts … and a place to propagate them from … when you don’t have a free press.

The Delaware Supreme Court struck down their state’s death penalty, declaring it unconstitutional. My hope is that the 9th U.S. Supreme Court justice, when he or she is added next year, is anti-death penalty and we can end the death penalty at the federal level.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Good morning. Just getting up and having coffee. Time to go look at the news. I can’t believe what a disaster Trump is everyday.

    • I am trying to remember the quote that suggests that there is no such thing as bad publicity because having your name in the news is the goal. I suspect that Trump subscribes to that philosophy but I think we may have reached peak saturation. The good news is that our candidates are quietly running a traditional campaign, meeting with voters, putting together ad buys and building the grassroots GOTV operations. #ImWithBoring

    • Dee, I have a question for you. I got into a “discussion” with someone about the proper way to refer to Native Americans. There was an AP news story reporting on the North Dakota case where a federal judge struck down the voter id requirements as they applied to Native Americans. The lead paragraph read:

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A federal judge on Monday blocked North Dakota’s voter identification law after a group of American Indians said it unfairly burdens them — the latest court ruling against voting laws that critics say disproportionately affect minorities.

The judge referred to the plaintiffs as Native Americans.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland issued a temporary restraining order and criticized the state for its 2013 repeal of provisions that let people without valid IDs vote if someone vouched for them or if they signed an affidavit swearing they were a qualified voter.

“The public interest in protecting the most cherished right to vote for thousands of Native Americans who currently lack a qualifying ID and cannot obtain one, outweighs the purported interest and arguments of the State,” Hovland wrote.

I always thought it was fairly well settled to use “Native American” but, during the Democratic Party roll call last Monday, many of the states with tribal communities used American Indian as well as Native American or various designations including “tribe” or “tribal”. The Canadian tribes use “First Nation”. Is there one preferred usage? Is it always okay to use Native Americans, even if the tribes in a certain state call themselves “American Indian”?

My complaint, which led to the “discussion”, was that the AP style-book obviously still uses American Indian. I suppose an alternative explanation is that the tribes in North Dakota prefer “American Indian”.

  9. Good morning, Meese! Cloudy (but no rain expected) this morning, current temp. 70 F., on its way up to 82 F. That would be a nice change from the mid-nineties except for the humidity.

Don’t know what to say about anything Trump has done. Ye gods! Now Meg Whitman is going to donate money to Hillary’s campaign and vote for her in November. And Sarah Palin’s son-in-law (didn’t know she had one) is chastising Trump for his little vendetta against Khizr Khan. Apparently the son-in-law is a vet.

Pramila J— won in Washington state’s 7th district! She “crushed it,” according to Granddaughter’s post on my FB newsfeed this morning. Political granddaughter is working on her campaign. That’s the only good news this morning.

And “more trouble for the Dems” because—ye gods—the DNC’s emails were hacked and it’s now revealed that the DNC favored Hillary during the primaries! So WHAT? She’s a Democrat. The DNC is a Democratic organization. St. Bernard is not a Democrat. The DNC isn’t allowed to have opinions? The DNC is not the entity that cast 17 million votes for Hillary during the primary elections.

If I never hear the word “email” in my life again, it will be too soon. And on top of that, despite all my dieting and working out at the gym, my weight is up two pounds this morning. That simple fact will cast a pall over the rest of my day.

Despite that, wishing a good day to everyone else at the Pond and Beyond!

    • Sarah Palin’s son-in-law is not just a vet but a Medal of Honor recipient. The Hillary Clinton account retweeted that Tweet from him!

I am so sick of the emails and the WaPo’s fascination with them (I expect it from Fox News). They assigned Hillary 4 Pinocchios because she said the FBI director cleared her of lying about them. So they dug into the words, parsed a few things and VOILA! – found a great headline to get clicks on. Several people on Twitter assigned WaPo 4 Pinocchios for their reporting.

  10. 10 million degrees, blah, blah, blah. (seriously — 81 degrees at 6am!?!) Did a hard weight workout last night, probably not the 800+ calories that my phone thinks, but pretty hard.

Lawrence O’Donnell last night…. basically diagnosed Trump with narcissistic personality disorder. Though the medical guy he had on was like, “no remote diagnosing”.

    Brain is playing U2’s Salome.

  11. 73 just after dawn – aired out the house and let Charlie have some window time before leaving for work – heading for mid-90s with heat index readings in the 110s again. But at least mostly sunny again. Got 20 KWHs each the last two days. If it did that every day this month, which it won’t, I’d generate the most ever on this system. :) Still, I’m hoping for better than last month. We shall see.

I wish somebody on the media would come out loud and strong with “Russians hacking DNC emails does not equal anybody hacking the Hillary campaign emails and sure as hell does not equal anybody hacking her personal emails now or when she was SoS” – Hillary has never been hacked and the lying shits that keep insinuating that she has based on the DNC hack job really need to be called on it. But it’s not going to happen. Bill and Hillary have managed to pay off all the debt they had when they left the White House and are now in the millionaire category, but they aren’t rich enough to start their own media to compete with the MSM. I will say that Bernie and the Berners in their damned irritating insistence that St. Bernie is the most liberal person evah and Hillary is a centrist may have actually done us a favor. If Hillary is a centrist, then Hillary’s stances are centrist – and that allows people who think of themselves as “moderate” to vote for them. Especially considering the alternative.

    Anyway, need to try and do the stuff I’ve been trying to do for the last 3 days. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}

  12. Morning all!

Yesterday was one of the craziest days in politics I can remember, if not THE craziest – Trump just kept bringing the crazy all day long, from the “I’ve always wanted to get a Purple Heart, this way is a lot easier”, to throwing a mother and infant out of his rally, to dumping on the city of Harrisburg, located in a state he MUST win, to refusing to endorse Ryan and McCain. Reports last night of his staff in despair, no wonder – and then, this gem on Morning Joe this morning, something I never watch but here it is on Twitter – watch to the end – if you weren’t terrified about Trump being commander in chief before, this will do it:

Trump asked about nuclear weapons 3 times in a 1-hour foreign policy briefing months ago, @JoeNBC says @Morning_Joe https://t.co/7h3TikCb6f— Bradd Jaffy (@BraddJaffy) August 3, 2016

I cannot imagine how we’re going to last until November at this rate.

OK, everyone have a great day!

    • What is even more shocking, Geordie, is that he keeps wanting to re-litigate the PR hits he took during the primary season. Yesterday, he brought up the disabled reporter he mocked and the Megyn Kelly “blood” comment. Both of those were things he said during the primary season that made his polling go down (calling Mexicans “rapists”, promising to deport 11 million people, and banning an entire religion were actually quite popular). Why oh why would he do that??? He really is driven by this need to win every battle.

I am laughing about the “intervention” the Republican Party muckamucks are yammering about. You can’t change a 70 year old man with untreated NPD.

  13. Good morning, 59 and cloudy in Bellingham. We enjoyed lunch and time at my favorite used bookstore yesterday. Sophie is reading the Warriors books. It’s an involved series featuring several clans of wild cats and to Sophie’s delight we found five of the six books in the Dawn of The Clans set……

Major themes in the series deal with adventure, forbidden love, the concept of nature vs. nurture, the reactions of different faiths meeting each other, and characters being a mix of good and bad. The authors draw inspiration from several natural locations and other authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien, J. K. Rowling, and William Shakespeare.

I’ll go to the pool this morning, and this afternoon the Ava, Sophia and I will shop for school clothes. They each have their own “style” so it will be a shopping adventure. I don’t spend much time at the mall, but I do know where the resting benches are and I plan to use them!

  14. Good morning, meese! Thursday …

It is 75 degrees in Madison on its way up to 88. Mostly sunny skies with a chance for thunderstorms later tonight.

The news is full of the two things that I don’t want to focus on: Trump and polls. In a way, they are related – as the Republican Party’s nominee shows how unsuited he is for the office of president, Hillary rises in the polls and is starting to look unbeatable. But we can’t be distracted by the shiney objects, polls don’t vote, people do. If the press convinces people that we have this election in the bag and folks stay home on Nov. 8th, we will lose. There are over 3 months to go and if the past 72 hours is any indication, anything can happen. So don’t let up – don’t boo, vote – don’t gloat, vote.

Today is President Obama’s birthday – he turns 55. What a remarkable man and a remarkable presidency! He will be sorely missed. Yesterday, he commuted another 214 sentences. With these commutations, the total number is now 562 which is more than the past 9 president’s combined. While he was not able to get meaningful criminal justice reform passed in the hyperpartisan Congress created by the Teapartying of America, his stewardship of the Justice Department and his use of the presidential pardon power will leave a lasting legacy.

    See all y’all later!

  15. Good morning, Meese! It’s fair in NoVa today, 67 F. now, going up to 82 F. later. For the past few days the sky has been hidden by cloud and even this morning we have a mackerel sky covering the blue. Ten degrees cooler and it would feel like September.

Watching the implosion of the Trump campaign with glee and fascination, in about equal parts. It’s just astounding, how he keeps making gaffe after gaffe! And Paulie and Mitchy-Poo won’t disavow him. Shows you what kind of people they are.

Getting my fifth acupuncture this afternoon before we go over to Elder Son’s house. They’re searching for another nanny to share, since the family sharing their present nanny is sending the youngest child to preschool and won’t need her any more. I should go into the nanny business myself, it’s apparently so lucrative. But it would drive me crazy.

Wishing everyone at the Pond and Beyond a good Thor’s Day!

  16. I skipped the gym yesterday, I just couldn’t do it. But I have weights this evening & I paid for that so I’m going. I worry about the Olympics — the swim part of the triathlon should not be in that water, it has literal crap in it as well as figurative. And last night, Rachel had a report about how Daesh (I’m not calling them by the name of a Goddess) has been doing stuff in Portuguese. And with that, I’m turning up the volume on the song my brain is playing at me, Brave.

  17. Good Thursday morning Meese
Have browser issues today – and finally got my Sunday piece in after multiple crashes

Happy Birthday to the O-Man :)

I see Phyllis Schlafly is going after Paul Ryan – hah! They deserve each other (won’t link to Breitbart)
Now I can get some breakfast

  18. No idea what it was this morning – still cooler outside than in so I opened up for a bit – but already over 80 when I got to work. Walked in, first time in weeks, that hill is getting to me. I used to be able to do it in 40 minutes and it took me 50 this morning. I probably should get checked out, but I’m probably not gonna.

I will never think this nation is too smart or even too patriotic to elect somebody like Trump but I don’t think this nation is going to elect Trump. Hillary probably won’t get the landslide (or the Congress) she deserves, but I think she will win and she will at least get the Senate. With just the Senate, there are a whole lot of under the radar things she can get done to lay the foundation for getting back the Congress and getting a whole lot more done. She has been pounding down-ballot races from the get-go and now she’s got the full Dem Party team doing the same. Because she is the most qualified and experienced person to run for president – she has to be, that’s the only way for the first woman to make it – I trust her to figure out not only how to get a bunch of good stuff done, I trust her to figure out how to do an end-run around the media so people know about that good stuff and how it effects them – something President Obama didn’t manage to do in 2010 and is largely why people don’t know, much less give him credit, for what he did to pull us out of the financial ditch.

    I’ve got a bunch of stuff to do – every single day I get stymied on what I needed to do that day adds to the pile for the next day and my pile is getting bit. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  19. Morning all – not a lot to report today, other than my poor lawn finally got some water last night as my lawn guy came by and figured out what was up with my spinkler system (no power to the outlet, there was another breaker to be flipped, not in my regular box, but we found it and voila). Hoping we’ll get back into a regular rain pattern in a few weeks, as I hate to use the sprinklers, but I don’t want everything to shrivel up either.

I see Clint Eastwood, who I have always cordially despised, has put his foot in it again, pronouncing us all too sensitive for calling racist stuff racist – people now are saying he’s gone too far. Folks, he’s always been there, he didn’t just turn into a jerk at age 80, he’s always been one, he just didn’t reveal it openly.

I can’t add anything to Trump mania this morning – it’s all too nuts. I will say, Happy Birthday Mr. President! though – best president of my lifetime, and while I’m excited for Hillary, Obama will be sorely missed. For one thing, Bill has an impossible act to follow in Michelle! lol

OK, everyone have a great day!

  20. Good morning, 60 and sunny in Bellingham. The family is sleeping in this morning so my house is quiet. They will go on a hike at Artist Point on Mt Baker later today and we’ll have a family dinner on the patio tonight.

My plans for the day include resting my creaky knees, reading my book, and baking brownies for dessert tonight. I do need to find the burgundy paint for the new screen door and I should pay some bills but having an easy day is my priority.

    • That link led to a video on accessible trails! Looks like a nice place:

Hope you had a nice, restful day.
