Our new home needs decor

Of course we need a fireplace for the AR CEO; a few more rocking chairs, and we’ll all fit.

As we start the migration and settling routine, which includes figuring out how things work, it’s becoming clear that we can help each other find the front door and arrange the furniture. To that end, this is a meta (and experimental) post as a means of figuring out “what’s next”.

If you are still having issues with gaining access, please hang a comment to JanF under her latest Community posting. This will help her by having everything all in the same place, rather than searching through all the posts. If you see a stray comment from someone needing help, please provide their name to JanF as above.

If you are willing and able to become one of the daily writers, but have not asked JanF for authorship rights, please do so. The usual method is suggested: hang your request from her latest Community post.

Reese has already committed to a Thursday post for next week (and maybe if we ask nicely, all Thursdays?) The goal for the time being should be one new diary per day; if our commenting becomes as prolific as at the other place, we can always look at scheduling more. The immediate need, however, is to get commitments and a schedule in place for the next week. Philly76 did yesterday, I am doing this for today, and I can do a Tuesday post…can anyone else volunteer?

I have been sending out kosmail to Village group members to alert them to our new home. I am about halfway through the list and will continue notifications next week. However, if you still have a foot in both places and see someone who you want to see here, please kosmail them too. I don’t think anyone will object to duplicate requests, but I don’t want our Village to shrink just because we forgot someone.

Is there anything else? If so, please include it in the comments…and as always, this is an open thread.

  1. Thank you, DoReMi.

    Right now, we’re all kind of milling around (waves to familiar face across the room). Hordes of excellent diarists that have shown up. Thanks for stepping up to help get things organized.

    • Welcome home! Poor JanF, she must be wondering about us rubes who are celebrating just getting logged in (you are far from the only one who has viewed this as an accomplishment). I’m finding that the more time I spend toodling around with the features, the more comfortable I’m getting. By next week, I expect we’ll start having posts with actual content too, and then we’ll all start feeling more comfortable.

          • {{{MomentaryGrace}}} – if you can put this in here already, you are definitely capable of writing posts for the Village! You’re already more technically savvy than I am and I’ve been at the Moose Pond for years. moar {{{HUGS}}}

          • Once I tested and saw that the comment box accepts HTML (some disable it) I was good to go for $100. ;) I’m a web designer by trade, and I learnt my HTML skills before all these new fangled dreamweavers and wordpresses and whosiewhatsits showed up.

            Another Day, Another $5.68
          • I understand from other programmer folks that disabling HTML was the worst part of DK5. Being totally gormless myself, I just sit back in awe and appreciate you. {{{HUGS}}}

          • There’s an upside and a downside on platforms like this (public forum type deal), and when it’s disabled it usually for security concerns.

          • Yay, reese! I found ya again! I’m so happy about it, and looking forward to your posts. I might do something on the Dems Abroad scene, we’ll see… right now I reckon orange cheeto has everyone in a tailspin.
            And yeah, I’m still mourning what might have been…

          • Squeee! I just saw my Village avatar, and it’s 7 (the 2nd coolest number).

            Brilliant job! I am so going to use this.

            Thanks so much, MomentaryGrace. You’re good folks.

  2. I’ve been trying to work up my nerve to offer to do one of the dailies over on DK, but now that we have this amazing space, I’d rather try here. Maybe Wednesday? And are yall up for the oddness that I am likely to provide? No hurt feelings if anyone dissents, I promise. I’m not to everyone’s taste.

    Things you are likely to get: cats, tweets, musings about life, music, non-standard spiritual references, pop culture, fringe science, mixed in with your #Resistance and #TooManyHashTags.

    • I love me some “cats, tweets, musings about life, music, non-standard spiritual references, pop culture, fringe science, mixed in with your #Resistance and #TooManyHashTags.”

      Thanks, MonmentaryGrace.

    • It sounds good to me. I don’t think we’re as constrained by expectations here as at the other place, so our individuality should show. Next big question: this Wednesday only, or do you feel ready to commit to every Wednesday? (And so you know there’s no pressure, at the moment, I am only committing to this Tuesday. I’m not sure I can take on more without playing with the tools of the site a bit more.)

      • Yay for my tolerant Village fambly! <3

        I was thinking every Wednesday, with the usual caveats – arrange time off in advance with other writers and get someone to cover if I need a Wednesday off, and assuming yall can put up with me once a week, and/or better writers aren’t in search of a weekly slot and mine’s the best fit. :)

        I’m confident in my ability to ramble, since I have such a tolerant readership.

    • Hello, glad to see you all, I hope to publish occasional diary but not yet ready time-wise for a schedule.

  3. {{{DoReMI}}} – thank you. This is lovely. A fireplace, hardwood floors, big window for the light, and a ceiling fan, too. It’s feeling more and more comfortable all the time. {{{MomentaryGrace}}} – I think that’s a lovely mixture. We need to be part of the Resistance, but being able to be part of the Resistance includes taking care of ourselves and each other. Your mixture of stuff works for that! So at the moment our schedule is:

    Sunday –
    Monday –
    Tuesday – DoReMI
    Wednesday – MomentaryGrace
    Thurday – reesetheone
    Friday –
    Saturday –

    And one a day is the way HNV started. We didn’t branch out to a second and then a third a day until we started getting too many comments for the mobile devices to load. :)

    • {{{{fitz}}}} hi Arkansas CEO….missed you and everyone else lately..Been spending most of my time on twitter and at Chris’s…Been trying to figure out how to write and publish here and will help out if I ever figure it out but not having much luck….moar{{{{Hugs}}}}

      • {{{Batch}}} – Definitely missed you. So glad you are with us. Having his own, he may be too busy, but I hope Chris will join us. Missing him and the czarina, too.

        Did you see the update JanF put at the bottom the Evening Edition 2/1 post? It shows how to start writing/publishing. Hope you do have time to do it. Philly and (as you know since you’re in it) DoReMI have both posted. Once we get a rotation going and folks get more comfortable with the difference in platform, we’ll get the Resistance and Round up content to start our conversations with. I’m about to leave work – going to be late home as I need to pick up my car but I’ll be back online in a couple of hours. moar {{{HUGS}}}

        • {{{{Fitz}}}} Can you see it I am cleared for writing privileges please….Going by DoReMI instructions she gave me below when i go to the dashboard it doesn’t give me the option to post. Let me know and when we get it figured out I’ll take a day and or as a fill in for other days…moar{{{{Hugs}}}}

          • Thank you Jan…You are impressing me every time I come here…Hope I can live up to my end and give some good content at least one day a week.

          • You guys are keeping me on my toes!

            I appreciate your patience as we get everyone who needs to be a writer set up properly. It seems like a pain but I have been the admin on a half a dozen blogs over the years and the “free for all” format has never worked well. A tightly admin’ed registration process – and people of goodwill working for a common cause Progress Through Politics – will make this a great place to gather and rebuild. We won’t always agree but we will never be disagreeable; it is really not necessary to be surrounded by people who hate us and want to undermine and belittle our efforts – there are plenty of places on the Internet for fighting. I disagree that it “toughens us up” – I think it is demoralizing to be attacked by those who should be on the same side as us, people who trash us because we prefer to build coalitions rather than bonfires.

            I monitor all the comments for admin requests (right now I have two new users to add – basket and nakedirish). When I get caught up on some work projects, I hope to have more time to read your posts and comment. The influx of new writers and voices is energizing to this old blogger.

            Carry on!

            p.s. If you can think of a good way to communicate admin requests – from and to – I am open to suggestions. As it sits now, I have been hanging notes off the first comment in the intro post but because of the comment page split, that gets buried pretty quickly in a busy post. Would it disrupt the flow if I posted a comment in whatever the latest post is with updates and notes, at least until we get stabilized?

            p.p.s. One of the key features missing from WordPress commenting is a way to easily view replies to your comments. I have been looking for an already built add-on off and on for the past 4 years and have never found one. I know it is doable because I have seen the metacode that handles comments – if you look at comments via your dashboard, you can see who they are replying to. This may finally give me impetus to write my own. In my mind, comment tending is what builds community and you shouldn’t have to scan every post to see if someone is replying to an old comment of yours.

            p.p.p.s. NOW you can carry on. :)

          • I just wanted to take a minute and really say amen to this:

            it is really not necessary to be surrounded by people who hate us and want to undermine and belittle our efforts – there are plenty of places on the Internet for fighting. I disagree that it “toughens us up” – I think it is demoralizing to be attacked by those who should be on the same side as us, people who trash us because we prefer to build coalitions rather than bonfires.

            I understand the need to endure, but “toughening” leads to loss of empathy in my experience. How can we advocate for others if we lose our ability to feel and understand how others feel?
            Thank you JanF. Your empathy is evident.

          • JanF – I’m not a writer of posts, but I think putting an update at the bottom of posts is a very good idea. And MomentaryGrace is right about you. I’ve always thought so. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Sunday –
      Monday – Philly76
      Tuesday – DoReMI
      Wednesday – MomentaryGrace
      Thursday – reesetheone
      Friday –
      Saturday

      Also – what time’s the best for a morning post? Want to have the coffee shop open for the east-coasters but the rest of us need our sleep. LOL

      • Has anybody asked Michael if he’d like to join us and post his Sunday breakfast here? He could post in both places.

        • He posted over in SBG’s diary that he’s got the Breakfast ready so he may be around to ask. I’m pretty sure he’s tech savvy enough to be able to do it. Or for tomorrow, if he’s not a member here yet, somebody who is tech savvy (not me) could ask permission to copy his diary over here. That would give us a Sunday meeting place.

        • I sent him a kosmail about our home here, but I don’t know if he’ll join us here or not. I guess i should head over to the orange and check my mail.

    • Thank you so much. I need to play around with the tools a bit more before I’m willing to commit; there are a few things that aren’t intuitive to me so I’m kind of doing post-by-keyboard-smash at the moment. Oh, and I’m really glad you didn’t play hard to get and make us beg. ;D

      • That’s not my style…… when you’re a team, you try to play your part. It’s my pleasure to contribute to the community.

    • Bless you, Melissa McEwan. And thank you Hillary for trying so hard. Reading Melissa’s letter made my heart hurt again at what we almost had, but lost.

      • Yeah – not us, because we worked our butts off for her and appreciate the heck out of her – America in general doesn’t deserve her. But she’d have worked her butt off for America anyway.

  4. Hi all you ex-pats…Missing everyone…Will be willing to take a day if I ever figure out how to do anything here but not having much luck so far…Some guidance would be appreciated…If I can get the rudimentary parts of it down I’ll take a day though.

    • When you signed up here, did you request writing privileges? If not, that’s step one (see paragraph three in my post). If you are already cleared for writing, go to the top of this page; hover over where it says Motley Moose, and you’ll see a hotlink for Dashboard. Click on that, look on the left for where it says posts, and then click on “add new.” That’s the writing section. JanF has given some instructions for getting started here too, which are very helpful. We’re all in the same boat, I think, of muddling around a bit, so I’m just going to play around with the new toy this weekend until I get more comfortable. Good luck…and glad to see you here!

      • Hi DoRiMI…Good seeing you….don’t know about the writing privileges…i would think I have them if fitz is asking me to take a day…if not when I attempt one I’ll get it fixed then. I will try a few things this weekend also and we’ll see how it goes…Looking at our CEO’s list above I suppose I will take Friday and maybe one more…Depends on what happens…
        Thanks for the info…I’ll give it a look see.

      • Hi {{{{Avilyn}}}….Great seeing you here…It looks like the putrid patrol is getting their wish and is getting rid of us to which I say…fuck em if they can’t take a joke.

    • We’ve all missed your diaries, Batch. Just like Reese’s. It’s what helped to make our village what it was.

    • One of the good people – I think. And a loss for our country’s brinksmanship going forward.

    • That was powerful. That was inspiring. I may look at that again and again, when even my small efforts seem too little or too late. Thank you.

  5. And in other news, four of my friends, all women 55 or older, went to the local office of MI-10 Congressman Paul Mitchell (R) today. First, the staffers had the door locked and were peering out through the blinds. At some point, they must have been allowed in, but somehow one of the women, a vet, was blocked from entering and manhandled out of the office. They’re putting it out on Twitter (I may be helping!), but this is a 1st term rep who is so emboldened that this is part of his MO. (On #ResistTrumpTuesday he had four cops on hand to greet the five constituents who came to his office.) This is Trumpistan…

    • What, no sand bags and ramparts? Amateurs. When your friends get it on Twitter, please let us know. I want to see it.

      The visual of his staffers peeking out through the blinds would make one heck of an resistance ad.

      • @KossackDoReMI @kathielucas @barjakfamily. It’s all a bit disjointed, but you’ll be able to pick up the gist from the three of us.

      • Flood the internet with videos of calm, peaceful, non-threatening – especially older, white, female – citizens and frightened congresscritters. “We’re supposed to depend on him to guard the country?” works rather well with that sort of graphic. :)

  6. Well folks, I should have headed for the rocking chair over half an hour ago but at least I’ve got the shell of the Street Prophets diary at DK ready for tomorrow afternoon. Depending on when the cats get me up, I may be online before 8 – as in before I go off to do my grocery shopping for the week. Otherwise definitely when I get back. {{{HUGS}}} and our new home is sooooo comfortable. :)

    • Too bad buyer’s remorse doesn’t work in presidential elections. It never has given me much satisfaction to say “told ya so” – if I tell somebody a course of action is disastrous and they do it anyway, well, I’m not happy about the disaster. But we did tell them. And they spit on us and called us liars. If the disaster was just going to fall on them, I’d have a hard time not hoping they’d learn a lesson from it. But it’s not.

        • Srsly! Meanwhile, I’m heading for the rocking chair to warm my feet then to bed. Hope DoReMI was able to contact Michael. If would be nice if we had permission to copy the British Breakfast over here. (He can’t cross-post unless/until be comes a member and editor.) It would give us a Sunday diary and spread his work around.

          I’m not usually online on Sundays until 10 central anyway. Jan’s already got next week’s Welcome diary ready so I’ll see you in there even if we don’t have a Village diary set up yet. g’night and {{{inkaudlay}}}
