Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 14th through May 20th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 45 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 54. Rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast. Not much change expected for the next week.

I am moving in slow motion this morning. I really need to avoid the daily trainwreck that is playing in real time on Twitter but it is difficult to take my eyes off it. Yesterday’s revelations came in waves – good lord, tRump’s staff despises him as much as we do.: “He looks more and more like a complete moron“. Yikes!

Tony Schwartz, the shitgibbon’s biographer thinks that tRump will resign rather than let himself be impeached. I think that is a most likely scenario. That way he can set the narrative and take down whichever “enemies” he wants to in his “you won’t have Donald J. Trump to kick around any more – losers!” speech. I hope he takes out the knives for Paul Ryan and makes it impossible for him to pass his immoral legislation. Or Pence so that the line of succession is thrown into chaos and there is no tie-breaking vote in the Senate for months. Or makes a deal to have Pence pardon Kushner, making him unelectable in 2020.

In the meantime, the Republicans are plotting to destroy the individual insurance market by ending the Cost Sharing Reduction (CSR) payments which help insurance companies cover people with low incomes. On Monday, the administration has to decide whether to drop defending the lawsuit that Congressional Republicans filed and won in federal court that calls the payments illegal. If they do, the lower court ruling stands and the payments have to be halted. Some states filed a motion to intervene to take up the defense so there may be some hope there. It would not surprise me to have the Republican administration announce the end of the CSRs while the shitgibbon is out of the country so that they can shelter him from the fallout from that decision.

I have to catch up on projects today. The WannaCry ransomware threat made me have to do my network security checks early (and made them much more intense) and my schedule is a mess. I will have a Fighting Back post – one that includes the ACA repeal status – a little later this morning.

    See all y’all later!

  2. This morning, Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) will give the Howard University commencement address at 10am Eastern:

Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) delivers the commencement address at her alma mater of Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Airing Saturday, May 20 9:00am CDT on C-SPAN

      • I saw that! Shocking that a god school has enough decent students to summon the outrage to protest Pence. Those guys should not be allowed to normalize hatred and bigotry and to pretend that the Trump administration reflects America’s values.

        • Traditionally the RCs have put a lot of energy into “good works” – it’s only been in the last decade or so that the American bishops have been suckered into supporting the Fundies, Randians, and Social Darwinism crowd. The only thing they have in common is anti-abortion. The majority of American RCs still support the poor and marginalized (and are much happier with Pope Francis than with their own bishops).

  3. 66 and raining here in Saugerties NY on a Saturday.
Trying to get up the energy to grade papers.

    Will procrastinate instead :)

  4. Good Saturday morning, all! It’s a partly cloudy day, with 67 F. now in NoVa and a high later of 71 F.

The new cough medicine did its job and allowed me to sleep until 4:30 a.m. After I got up, I returned to bed but couldn’t climb back into my dream, so got up at 5. Have already been out this morning to get sweet rolls for breakfast and now am so achy I think I’ll have to rest for an hour or so.

Have been following the Twitterverse and everything else with morbid fascination. I can’t believe what a train wreck we’re living through, all because “Hillary was corrupt” and “emailghazzzziii”! Yeah, right.

Tonight is Vegetarian Night so we’ll have nachos, salad, and fresh mango with mango ice cream. We plan to watch the Preakness to see whether Always Dreaming will pull it off again.

    Wishing everyone a good Saturday!

  5. I shouldn’t watch the local news during the legislative session, they’re going to vote on an awful anti-choice bill today. Just saw footage of one of my favorite state reps, a former nurse, crying on the floor yesterday about the awfulness of this bill.

Stormy day, but looks like UT commencement will go on. Good for the grads, but it complicates my plan to visit my friend today, the hospital she’s in is right by campus. Going to bake oatmeal today, because tomorrow I have an ice cream social to go to. Playing Ultraviolet in my head — and even if you don’t like U2, if you never click on these links, click on this one & listen to the intro, because Bono dedicates it to the women who stood up for their rights, who insisted & persisted. It’ll make you feel good.

  6. Good morning, 56 and sunny in Bellingham. I’ve got indoor work I need to do today but the sun is already tempting me to be outside. It’s really nice to see some blue sky along with the white clouds.

Time for some coffee. Best wishes to all for a peaceful day!
