Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 11th through June 17th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good Friday morning Meese.
62 here going up to 69 – which is a bit cooler than normal here in NYS.

Just saw this tweet – am off to find this PBS Newshour program

  2. I am going to place this here so I can find it later:

    Published on Jun 15, 2017
Kamala Harris delivers remarks at the National Partnership for Women and Families annual gala.

    • Love that KH quoted Shirley Chisholm “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.”

      • That was great! I love it when our current political leaders draw on our past to make their points. We did not arrive fully formed in 2017 – a lot of people blazed the trail that got us here.

  3. It was an amazing and totally unexpected 64 at dawn – i finally turned on teh A/C at 8:30 last night (at the time it was still mid 80s with humidity to match) – turned it off again at 10:30 – but forecast was for upper 70s as the overnight low – a storm moved through around 2 am and dropped the temps about 20 degrees. I can live with that. :) Got some sunshine at the moment which I hope will stay strong. This time of year the PV system is capable of generating over 24 KWHs a day – yesterday I got 16. Rain at night and sunshine in the daytime are always the best combination in my opinion (at least for those who can be indoors at night and have some heat protection in the day – yes, I’m a Libra, why do you ask? LOL).

War news. Take note. Make calls or send faxes – whatever your part of the war effort – then do your best for family and community under war circumstances. That’s always how it works. Keep on keepin’ on until we get there. – but oh, how I wish i could get my hands on $70K – my community needs list would have nobody on it for at least a week. If wishes were horses – there’d be absolutely no need for commercial fertilizer. :)

    Need to check the Village then get back to work. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  4. Good morning, 60, cloudy and soggy in Bellingham. We have had record level rain again so my plans for a Dad’s Day lunch on the patio on Sat may have to change. I’ll do a few outdoor prep things today regardless.

Hope everyone is enjoying the day.

  5. Good morning, meese! Saturday …

It is 64 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 81. Sunny skies but a chance of thunderstorms. Last night a line of storms went through about 11:30pm and lasted over an hour. It will be cooler tomorrow!

The acquittal of Philando Castile’s murderer should have everyone up in arms. His mother’s righteous anger:

Until unprovoked police shootings are treated as the crimes they are, we will never have justice. They are given guns and badges and apparently little else in the way of training or testing for suitability to their job. State sanctioned murder, period. Police departments who won’t take responsibility for their own employees need to face more lawsuits like the one filed in Oklahoma:

Acquitted of manslaughter and back on desk duty, Tulsa, Oklahoma Police Officer Betty Jo Shelby now faces a civil suit from the family of the unarmed man she killed last fall.

Terence Crutcher was empty-handed next to his vehicle when Shelby fired a single shot that killed him. Police cameras captured the final moments of the 40-year-old’s life from multiple angles, showing he had been walking slowly with his hands high above his head during the moments before the killing.

A jury decided last month that it could not convict Shelby of manslaughter in the case despite the video evidence. Defense attorneys persuaded jurors that Crutcher had made a move toward the open driver’s-side window of his stationary vehicle, and that Shelby’s decision in that moment to kill him was justified by what she perceived to be a reach for a gun that did not exist.

    See all y’all later!

    • I’m beyond anger. I also don’t want to hear anyone touting that income equity will solve this.

Got disgusted by comments elsewhere that were cop-splaining

      • {{{Denise}}} – I have no idea whether Hillary’s plans to address this would have made a difference, but at least she recognized it for the serious and systemic issue that it is and had a plan.

I follow IGTNT and put in a virtual candle and “prayer” in every diary. It’s a good thing that a caring bunch of people do so our military is not forgotten. But I don’t think it would even be possible to do an IGTNT community for those who die from racial violence of whatever nature. There are too many victims in the first place – and the series would be attacked by the Extreme Left white-splaining, gun-splaining, cop-splaining, and totally insulting the dead and their families. Goddess bless you for keeping on keeping on. The Extreme Left is no more reachable than the Extreme Right – but there are a bunch of caring white folks out there who just don’t understand. Their contact with other races was limited growing up and they accepted what they grew up with as normal. Education can reach them and you are one of the best. {{{HUGS}}} and Healing Energy.

  6. It’s Saturday Meese

65 here in the Catskills going up to 79.

Today is the second anniversary of the Mother Emanuel massacre.
    RIP.

  7. Good morning, Meese! Overcast here in NoVa, with a current temp. of 71 F., climbing up to 81 F. later. It rained during the night and we’re expecting thunderstorms later today. We’ll see.

I’m so sickened by the Castile “verdict” I don’t know what to do. Racism is this country’s No. 1 problem, ahead of climate change and all the rest. Until white people admit this and work to overcome its racism’s horrific consequences, we will never make any progress. I had thought better of Minnesotans. So heart-breaking about that jury.

Planning to visit my friend on Capitol Hill today. I wish the weather would be dry enough for us to walk around so I can see for myself where she takes her fabulous photographs.

Tomorrow we’ll be going to our elder son’s house for a Father’s Day barbecue. His company just named him “Salesman of the Year”! We’re so proud. He received a cash award and some accolades.

Wishing a good Saturday to all!

  8. I slept in, and hit snooze a few times…… Got up to watch the news & wait for Joy Reid’s show. I hope she has a segment on the travesty of the Castile verdict. It makes me ill, I really just can’t wrap my mind around it. Today: groceries, housework & the gym. And a visit to the house repair diary — the handle came off my oven door. I need to figure out how to fix that.

  9. It was supposed to be sunny today. Wrong. I slipped out to the Market while there was still some light – really shouldn’t have because there wasn’t that much light but it was early enough that there was little traffic – got my fruit and veggies for next week. (Need to get some meat somewhere – neither peaches nor green beans have much protein.) It’s now dark enough my PV system is back in night mode and the street lights are on. Radar shows a cell about halfway between here and Tulsa moving this way. If it moves due east, we’ll get the water – but northeast or southeast we’ll just get the clouds and I’ll have to do some watering. Got the A/C back on. Temps inside and out are about the same at the moment, but the humidity outside is uncomfortably high.

Sometimes it is very hard for me to hang onto my Faith in the inherent Goodness of the Universe – even moreso in the inherent Goodness of human beings. I have to keep reminding myself that Evil and Violence are news because they are relatively rare. They are not normal. If they were normal they wouldn’t be news. It’s kind of like the “over-taxed” arguments – if you only count how much you are taxed then it looks like you do nothing but pay taxes. If you recognize that you paid your rent/mortgage, paid your utilities, bought groceries, made the car and insurance payments, bought gasoline… then you realize your taxes are not the majority of your expenditures. That is not to dismiss or diminish the impact on individuals and families (and friends and communities) of these violent and evil acts. They are horrible and painful and so effen wrong – they must be stopped somehow. But Good still outnumbers Evil and Good can overcome Evil. So I will do whatever I can think of – in combination with the community of Loving and Caring people – to overcome Evil.

    Need to check some stuff for today’s Street Prophets Community Fundraisers diary – I don’t want to bother folks in pain, especially grieving people, but I can’t update the fundraisers without information. So I try to find out stuff other ways before trying to contact them directly. Time it takes. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
