Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 18th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, Meese! It’s a gray, rainy morning here in NoVa, with the wet street shining in the lamplight and the windowpanes covered with raindrops. Currently it’s 73 F., going up to 84 F. The good news: I don’t have to water the garden, which is coming right along. I picked one blueberry and one raspberry yesterday. :)

Haven’t looked at the news yet. What is all this about Nancy Pelosi and what the hail has she got to do with anything? Oh, wait, she’s the nearest powerful woman to pick on, that’s what! The Boyz wanna hate, hate, hate, so they pick the nearest female person. May Durga punish the Boyz as they deserve. I get so sick of constant misogyny and racism.

When it all goes down, imploding quietly like a giant sinkhole, I want Kamala Harris for president. If she were a gay Muslim, so much the better.

My novel is in chapter 11! It’s only going to have 15 or so chapters, so we’re coming down to the home stretch. I used to write 300+ page novels but since I became a grandmother I can’t seem to focus long enough to write that much. Mr. Preschooler asked me yesterday, “Is the pizza ready yet, Grandma?” about 45 times, so I’m still trying to get that out of my brain.

Wishing a good, completely uneventful Friday to all.

    • Yup, I am ready to flip a big middle finger at the Berniebros and the Bidenators and jump on the Kamala Harris for President bandwagon. The waves of misogyny that came off the 2016 election has radicalized all of us. You think we should be scared to nominate a smart strong black woman as our presidential candidate? Hold my beer, as they say.

  2. Good morning, meese! Friday …

It is 64 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 75. A few lingering showers will be in the area this morning but the afternoon promises sunny skies. Last night we had chaining storms from about 12:30 until about 1:30 than again from 2:30 to 3:00am. I sense a nap in my future.

I am still trying to suss out the strategy of the Senate’s healthcare repeal bill. I suspect that they are hoping that by the time the worst of the cuts kick in that the American people will forget who did it to them. It would not be the first time; after the 2013 government shutdown, opinion polls were strongly against Republicans – then they rewarded the destroyers with dozens of seats in the House and a Senate majority, paving the way for the Merrick Garland blockade. Will it be different when it impacts people directly? The government shutdown was bad for government workers and people who wanted to go to parks. But because we had a Democratic administration that cared about good government, essential services were kept running and the pain was not felt everywhere. When granny runs out of money and is kicked out of the nursing home and ends up living in her kid’s basement, I hope to hell that there is someone around ready to remind people why that happened.

    See all y’all later!

  3. It is so hot — 80 at 6am. Really depressing. Expected record high of 103 today — then a cold front for the weekend (that’s really what the weather folks said, “cold front”) and highs down to the low 90s. I left work early yesterday with a stomach issue, meant to go to the gym but never got to feeling up to it. Gym bag is in the car for after work today. I used resistbot to fax Cornyn & Cruz yesterday. I know they will vote with evil, but I want them to know I see them.

  4. 68 at dawn – a nice sunny one – supposedly only heading for 83 which I most certainly do not believe. Yesterday was supposed to max at 86 and it went to 92. Got hazy and cloudy in the afternoon and both temps and humidity went up – while electricity production went down – only 14.75 KWHs yesterday and my m-t-d is 321 at the moment. Hoping to make 500 by the end of month. Which is not good for June. However I am grateful that I am generating clean electricity at all.

Called both my senators’ local offices this morning. Will call their DC offices, too. Boozman is definitely and Cotton is probably going to vote for this evil DeathCare bill. But I’ll call them anyway. Meanwhile on the community side of Resistance, added ursulafaw to my needs list as of last night (needs 5 front teeth replaced and to get her car to CA emissions standards) but the really not good news is Aji had to let the crew go yesterday. For the foreseeable future. Which we are trying to change. There will be a diary up at DK by 6 eastern with a $500 match – anybody who can and is inclined to do so, please toss in a bit after 6 central and it will count towards the match. thanks.

    Gotta get back to work – will visit the Village first but end of fiscal year is rolling up on us and there are so many little picky things to do before it gets here. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good morning, 59 and sunny in Bellingham. Feels like a summer day, so after the pool I will be outside. I’ve got the plants for two more pots so that will be creative fun, and weeding and pruning is always an option as well.

    Have a good day everyone!

    • Not much doubt where he stands on the ACA and Medicaid repeal bill.

      Nancy Pelosi yesterday:

“Martin Luther King said that of all the inequalities, ‘the most cruel and stunning is that of health care because people will die.’ So I am so proud of our House Democrats sticking together, working with the Senate Democrats to stop [this cruel bill].

    • {{{Denise}}} – thank heavens for Rev. Barber. I of course may be wrong but I truly think that most people want to do the right thing – but most people don’t trust themselves to know what the right thing is and have to be told. By a “leader” – someone they admire and respect. Rev. Barber is such a person.

  6. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 57 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 66. Mainly sunny today with a chance of thunderstorms overnight.

No alarm clocks on Summer Saturday mornings and my body let me sleep until 6am! Now I will see if being rested makes me more productive or makes me lazy. :) I have a bunch of work I deferred to the weekend that I really can’t defer until Monday.

I have had time now to go over the healthcare repeal bill – and take in the reactions and reviews – and I don’t see at this point how it won’t get passed. The Senate majority is not in danger. Heller will lose his seat either way and – assuming we hold all ours (not even close to a guarantee) – I don’t see two more pickups. The House will have a more difficult road because many of them voted for the AHCA under the guise of “the Senate will fix the problems” – ha!

Senator Mazie Hirono gave the Democratic Party Address this week and I look forward to hearing what she has to say. I saw her at NN12 and her story is a remarkable one.

    See all y’all later!

  7. We hit a record high yesterday of 104. So today’s high of 92 is going to feel downright chilly. I’m going to an Indivisible workshop this afternoon, so my schedule is pretty tight today. Right after Joy Reid’s show, I’m dashing to the gym to squeeze in 45 minutes on the elliptical. Then clean up & go. Will let y’all know what I learn.

  8. By the way, on the story that President Obama “dropped the ball” by not stopping the Russians sooner, hindsight is always 20-20. He has always believed the best of the American people – from his call for bipartisanship in 2004 to his belief that our institutions are strong. That he focused on the infrastructure and not the fake news dumping aligns completely with who he is. The infrastructure was safeguarded and people did not have to believe obviously false news stories. This Tweet:

THAT is why we lost. Some people wanted to believe the worst because they are the worst.

    • That tweet is sooooo right. But if the corporate-owned media hadn’t played OMGHOF Russian lies & Comey insinuations 24/7 they’d have had to hunt a lot harder for that excuse.

  9. Good morning, 60 and sunny in Bellingham. Looks like a warm weekend, but my old maple trees have a thick leaf canopy this year so the house is shaded from the late afternoon sun. And thanks to the new screen door and some open windows the cooler air from the bay is nice in the evening.

Time to find some coffee and see if I can wake up. Best wishes to all for an easy summer Saturday.

  10. 62 at an overcast-ish dawn and 70 now – I’m glad we’re getting this cooler weather and I don’t have to have the A/C on because my solar electricity production is way down. I was totally offline the two most productive days of the month and year – and I’m down again. I’ve got a call in for the tech – they thought they had this fixed Tuesday. So much for thinking. So pissed about that!

I’m afraid AHCA DeathCare is going to pass. Is it an abuse of power? Of course. Standard R M.O. for the last several decades that I personally know of. They impeached Bill because they could. Even admitted it. Didn’t matter. Depending on any call to conscience won’t work – they don’t have one. Bunches of calls from their constituents won’t work – they pretend we’re “paid agitators”. At this point even calls from the Industry – from the hospitals that are going to shut down if they do this – aren’t working. It’s not even the tax cuts for the billionaires at this point. It’s destroying anything the black man in the white house did and seriously upsetting libruls. They’d set their own mothers on fire if it would upset us libruls. Which is why no matter how many of the Rs don’t like the bill, they’ll vote for it. We’ve got to do our best to take care of each other and protect each other right now – and take back Congress in the 2018 elections.

Of all the bad news out there – the new folks added to my list, being unable to reach the two whose mothers have died or are dying, another month’s rent/mortgage coming up for people we’re trying to get off the list – there is some good news. A minor in the world at large but major for Aji miracle in the form of two matches – one for $800 and a few hours later when that was about met another for $1,000 – were met for Aji last night. By the time I went to bed she’d been able to call the crew to come back next week. Miles to go before she and Wings can sleep soundly in their safe and healthful home, but we aren’t coming to a dead stop just yet as she so feared on Thursday afternoon. So. W00t! and YAY! and Thank you to everybody.

    Need to update my Sharing Saturday diary – and maybe sneak off and get an overdue hair cut – but will check back later for the Dem Party address. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
