It Takes A Village: VNV Wednesday – Oh the Humanity

The Village News & Views August 16, 2017
Wednesday Get Over the Hump Free for All

Greetings, Village Meese. It’s Day 209 of the Resistance and time for another Get Over the Hump post and discussion thread.

The banner picture is a crowd shot from the original (my favorite) 1967 movie The Producers. This is the crowd’s reaction during the first few minutes of Springtime for Hitler, before they start laughing. My mental caption for it is, White Men in Horror! If you haven’t seen the movie, I don’t know you.

Oh alright, I know you. You dear sweet innocent young thing!

Mel Brooks said in an interview in 2001, “If you stand on a soapbox and trade rhetoric with a dictator you never win…That’s what they do so well: they seduce people. But if you ridicule them, bring them down with laughter, they can’t win. You show how crazy they are.”

When our waking hours become so inundated with shock, and entirely appropriate horror, what can we do?

We’re already #Resisting with all our might. Are we really supposed to be able to laugh?

For now, it may be too soon. So don’t worry about laughing, yet. But we can acknowledge just how pathetically cartoonish the man occupying the White House is become.

Dangerous? Oh yes. But nevertheless, a nasty, evil, pathetic cartoon.

That’s it for me, enjoy some beverage, chat with your friends and fellow Resistors and just take a moment to enjoy some part of your day.

Thank you for your patience. Love and peace, Village! Enjoy your Wednesday gathering.

  1. Good morning Meese…Thank you Gracie…Always love reading your threads…And love the kitty pictures…Miss Hillary doesn’t rub against my finger…She bites it the little hellion.

    Question…Does anyone know ….maddie1994…from dkos or from here…She’s wanting to join squirrel and know one knows anything about her…She was bojo’d from kos May of 16 and it seems she is a member here but I don’t recall ever seeing her post any comments…

    • Hey Batch. I don’t know her but did you check out their comments on the 🍊? Who did they say referred them?

      60 and sunny with a high of 90 today (80’s the last two days). Going to finish the cup and head out.

    • Hi Batch. Don’t know maddie1994 I’m afraid. No help here.

      Miss Hillary sounds like she’s related in spirit to Master Wufei, or Mister Bitey as we sometimes call him. ;)

      Master Wufei knows how to bite soft, and only bites to hurt when he gets over excited. But his motto is clearly “I bite, therefor I am”.

    • It looks like she joined and was banned within a month of each other. No comments since last year so can’t help you there.

    • {{{Batch}}} – she was banned early enough she doesn’t have a lot of history but this is probably the comment that got her banned:

      That’s because “community moderation” as Armando has said, is a disaster. Particularly when coupled with a tacit admission in the site rules that the proprietors don’t care about equal administration of site justice, it ends up creating a sort of “tyranny of the majority”.

      Who makes up the DKos majority? Well, as Kos himself said a few weeks ago when he told of how he gave the infant Sanders campaign the DK mailing list to use in creating their own list, there is not all that much daylight between many DK hardcore participants and the Sanders campaign, something that has been especially true since the folding of a number of other progressive islands in 2014 and Kos inviting the Reddit and Yahoo folks in for a spin. They predominate, they flag, they write the most tickets, simply because there are more of them and more deadenders among them.

      or possibly this one:

      You mean like Bernie, who voted to keep funding the Iraq and Afghanistan wars?

      And is Lockheed’s favorite “Democratic Socialist”?

      And backs Obama’s war policy?

      There are a slew of them that could have gotten her banned all on May 6, 2016. Up to you folks, of course, but if she’s been lurking at DK in the Village she’ll at least have read references to Squirrel. moar {{{HUGS}}}

      • {{{fitz}}}}Yeah…I went to kos and looked at her history…squirrels all gave her the thumb down as no one could vouch for her. moar {{{hugs}}}

        • I’d have given her a trial membership myself, but I’m not there enough to vote. Anybody who gets banned from DK for speaking Truth to Power (and pointing out that bernie and berners are hypocrites and full of crap) is worth a trial – but again, I’m not there enough to have a vote on it.

          • I agree with bfitz. Check her out. I didn’t read the comments but I bet she’s been lurking under the bus with us. Just my thoughts.

        • If Chris contacts her, send her over here. We’re less talkative, but she can build a history here first if that’s what it takes for Squirrel to reconsider. I don’t get to Squirrel enough myself, but it makes me sad that there’s a potential ally out there looking for a home.

      • I just noticed in her comment that she said DK gave Sanders their mailing list?! Does anyone know if that is a) true; and b) standard practice?

        • She says she was quoting Kos himself but finding the diary in question – from sometime in March or April 2016 – would be an interesting proposition. Especially if it was a comment rather than in a diary. But nobody questioned or called her on that comment and I think they would have if it hadn’t been true. As for standard practice, not that I know of but then I don’t know what is standard practice. Except that bernie is not a Dem and never has been a Dem and DK was set up to elect more Dems. Unfortunately Kos hates Hillary. Yes, he voted for her because she’s a Dem but if he could have managed to help bernie win the nomination, he’d have done it. sigh.

  2. Good morning, meese and a big thank you to MG for the lovely spread. Wednesday is becoming my favorite day of the week (it used to be Friday but all my days are weekends now). Love the gifs although I think the tail wagging dog probably didn’t even know kitteh was there.

    I laugh at the Orange Shitgibbon much like I used to laugh at my racist, alcoholic father. Not much. If it’d get him to shut up or allow me to leave the room, I’d laugh hysterically. I have no place in my heart for racist blobs of gas. My SIL tutors a Syrian refugee in Denver. They were leaving the library last night when another patron stopped them and gave her a brief history lesson on Thomas Jefferson and the constitution and then welcomed her to the US. Gives me hope. More of my family members are speaking out on Facebook against this and I admit I’ve enjoyed watching my nephews smack down their friends. There is hope.

    Now, about that coffee? Off I go.

    • Thanks for the anecdotes, WYgal. There is always hope. Sometimes its light seems faint but it shines brighter when the world gets dark.

      Hugs & love {{{{{{{{{{{{WYgalinCali}}}}}}}}}}}}

  3. {{{MomentaryGrace}}} – Thanks for the double duty. Molly Ivins used to say we had to laugh, cry, or throw up and laughing is easier on the system. That doesn’t mean the situation isn’t dangerous. It’s damned dangerous – the more so for anyone of color (and/or wearing “funny” clothes) – but the best response, even if you had to wait until they were out of sight and earshot, has been laughter. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  4. Hey, guys! I’m just here for Maisie today (and yes, I keep going back and smiling at her photo…what a cutie!!!) I’m just sitting back for now, listening and observing as white supremacists reveal themselves. I can’t say I’m surprised. Or angry. Or sad. I’m just numb and tired, so I’m focusing on self care for a few days while I figure out a meaningful next step.

    In the meantime, The Hubby heard me, and today I received my Ancestry DNA test kit in the mail. So tonight, I’ll be filling a tube with my spit, mailing it out, and then the waiting will begin. The big question marks will be how much, if any, Scandinavian traces show up (i.e. is that where my Scots ancestors originated?) and if there is any indication that we have Jewish roots (there are some wonky baptismal records which may indicate either conversion or…wonky recordkeeping). At this point, I would dearly love to have proof of Jewish roots, just so I can rub it in to those of my nephews that are showing themselves as unapologetic white supremacists…”Sorry, sweetie, but you have impure blood!”

    In other family drama, my future son-in-law received an email from his aunt and uncle that they won’t be attending the wedding; after reviewing the wedding website, they’re “uncomfortable.” It may be because two of the bridesmaids are married (to each other), or it may be because two of the groomsmen are married (to each other). It may be because they’re having a hand-fasting as part of their ceremony, or it may be because they’re having a secular ceremony. Who knows? My daughter and her fiancé are actually unbothered and a bit relieved, but the rest of his family is up in arms. The 94-year old grandmother and avowed matriarch of the family is seriously pissed at her daughter (the aunt in question), and this very proper, but beyond caring, woman sent out a family e-mail with the subject line reading “WTF?!!!” My daughter keeps sending me updates because it’s alternately sad and hilarious. Today, one of the uncles chimed in; his comment: What are you uncomfortable about? Are you afraid they’re going to require everyone to do the hokey-pokey? They’re almost managing to make my sister and her kids look sane…

  5. Thanks babe! Love the palate cleansers too! So weird to be living through these times again. Only this time, with experience.😉💖💖

    • {{{VonsterTX}}} – experience says we’ll get through it better and faster than last time. That’s what experience is for (that and recognizing the situation in the first place). moar {{{HUGS}}}
