Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Aug. 20th through Aug. 26th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, 64 and mostly sunny in Bellingham. I called it a day at about 6:30 pm last night and read and slept for hours! I’ve finally got a day to myself so along with laundry and desk work I hope to start pruning the salal, clipping the ivy fences, and shaping the rhodie under the library window. I’ve been studying the plants while everyone was here so now, if I can remember my plan, I can start actually doing it.

    Hope it’s a good day for all.

  2. Good morning, meese! Wednesday …

    It is 55 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 72. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

    There were no breaking news emails in my Inbox so I will assume that there were no new wars started. Reports are that some in Congress are none too happy about the current wars being extended with no chance of “victory”. Until the Vietnam era warhawks retire, we will never be able to simply leave a war. To them, the very act of entering a war means that you have to commit to it forever.

    Republicans in Disarray! I read the NYTimes article about Mitch McChinless being on the outs with tRump. It will have little impact on legislation – McConnell will focus like a laser beam on getting his judges and his tax cuts – but I enjoy the notion of him being uncomfortable. If any one man could be assigned the responsibility for the decade long breakdown of our democratic institutions, it is Mitch McConnell. I hope karma deals with him “fairly”.

    I have to get some projects out the door this morning so I can’t read the news yet. I hope people stayed out of trouble in Phoenix.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Good Wednesday morning Meese
    We had torrential rain last night, 68 and muggy today hete in the Catskills – going up to 86.

    We have a friggin’ President that co-signs these people:

    I’m getting soooooo tired of people who still tell me this is all about economic inequality

    • I don’t know what is more horrifying – that we have a president who encourages those people or that we have about 30 million people who approve of his encouragement.

      I saw that video making the rounds and I can’t bring myself to watch it. :(

      • I think this was important because it may wake up some Latinos who think the KKK is only targeting black Americans.

        • They should talk to Catholics and Jews! The KKK is an equal opportunity hater – pretty much anyone who is Not Them.

          • I commented over at Orange

            Considering the fact that our current President and a slew of other Republicans have failed to denounce these people — I think it is important that Spanish language audiences see that it is not only black Americans and Jews who are under attack from this filth. Calderon is Colombian-American — this interview has been widely circulated in Spanish language media — in the US and in the Caribbean and Latin American.

            The largest group of Colombian Americans in the US live in Florida. A state we need to flip to Democrats.

        • How’d the Latinos miss it? Ask the “Mexicans” in TX – you know, the ones whose families have been in TX since before it was TX like my BIL.

  4. Rachel’s A-block last night was just, wow — obstruction of justice looks like a real possibility. Here’s a link, it’s 20minutes but worth it. I ignored the Orange Horror’s rally last night — turned off Lawrence at 9:30 because he kept going over to it. May today have no new attacks, car rammings, shootings, knifings…. please just one day. U2: MLK — a calm, dreamy, lullaby-like song

  5. Good Woden’s Day, Meese. Currently it’s 74 F. in NoVa, going up to 82 F. Blissfully cloudy this a.m., I do hope for some rain.

    Reeling from what I’ve been reading about the Phoenix “rally.” I dread the thought of another government shutdown.

    Yesterday my house was filled with family from 8:30 in the morning until 8:30 in the evening. I’m ready for a rest!

    Got to get on with things. Wishing everyone a good day.

    • The government shutdown would be nothing compared to defaulting on the national debt. I dread both!

      I think that the Republican Congress may have a moment of reckoning – do they override the veto of their out of control president or do they destroy the economy. I don’t have a lot of confidence that they will choose correctly.

    @PicardTips

    Picard civics tip: If there is one truth, one constant that history shows us over and over, it is that resistance is never futile.

  7. mid-60s just before dawn and still in the low 70s supposedly heading up to only the mid 80s. Sunny so far – all the generation I can get adds to the pot as it were, got 13 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 254. Not good for August and a 4K system, but I’m still managing to stay ahead of use. Mostly by not running the A/C except when it’s too sticky to sleep without it.

    RantNews ask for input from us Hillary supporters so I gave them mine. About the only thing I said that’s short enough to fit on a tweet is “living in Trump’s America is like living in Vichy France in 1942” – at least I think that’s short enough to fit on a tweet. And they and anybody else can use that phrase in good health. (Unless of course someone who lived in Vichy France in 1942 disagrees. Then i’ll find another analogy.) The R party, at least the elected members there of, are at this point traitors with no other goal than to destroy our government and country. You can’t even say they’re greedy any longer – destroying the economy and the value of U.S. currency is very bad for business and will tank everybody’s stock AND bonds. As to their evil actions regarding anyone who isn’t them, well, nothing new there either. sigh. But we’ve overcome that evil before and managed to make progress. We’ll do it again. It will be harder of course if we have to rebuild our entire government first.

    Gotta get to work. I’ll check in with the Villages as i can. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning, 64 breezy and partly cloudy in Bellingham. All I was able to do yesterday was think about what needed to be done, so today I hope I have some energy to actually do something. I’m going to pass on the pool this morning and focus on laundry and getting the house clean again. Fortunately Sue, my energetic young housekeeper, will be here to the heavy work.

    Public opinion re tRump seems to be finally changing but last night’s performance was chilling. He’s a very dangerous man.

    OPINION | Trump is losing his war against the free press

    Trump’s false statements, not the media that fact-checks those statements, have led to his sweeping disapproval from American voters. In Arizona on Tuesday, Trump again attacked the free press, and in doing so, he reminded the majority of voters who disapprove of him why they yearn for the post-Trump era in American politics.

    • “yearn for the post-Trump era” – :::raises hand:::

      I will heave a sigh of relief. We will still have to deal with Republicans (next up: “post-Republican era”?) but having him in charge of anything of value is very distressing.

      Regardless of how the next 3.5 years play out, it will be a permanent blemish on our country to have his name in the list of presidents for children to memorize and his portrait hanging in the White House. It is simply gross.

  9. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 54 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 68. Cloudy this morning then mostly sunny in the afternoon and into the evening.

    Some good news yesterday: the federal judge in the Texas voter id case rejected the second law as racially discriminatory and ordered that the use of voter ids be suspended for the next election. It will surely be appealed but the 5th Circuit had already sent it back to the district judge once so in theory they should be willing to accept her conclusions. It will end up at the Supreme Court and the big question is if the court will issue a stay to the district court order thereby allowing the ids or block their use while it is being considered. This would be a good chance for Chief Justice John Roberts to repair the damage he has done to democracy. I keep thinking that we are not that far away from taking Texas and – if we do – it will mean that the haters and losers can keep the electoral votes from the White Butthurt States of America.

    Speaking of white butthurt, these numbers that were making the rounds yesterday infuriated me even more than I was before:

    @gelliottmorris

    Sanders -> Trump voters…
    WI: 51k
    MI: 47k
    PA: 116k

    Trump win margin…
    WI: 22k
    MI: 10k
    PA: 44k

    I knew this was true in Wisconsin – I saw the berners ignoring downticket Democrats and judicial races. And they were unhinged about their anti-Hillary hatred. Well, now we can call them what they are – ignorant people not just willing to hurt America but actively hurting America. [badword] them with a rusty anvil.

    See all y’all later!

  10. Well, we’re in for interesting weather this weekend. Tropical storm or hurricane. Path is still uncertain, so the prediction is for anywhere from 4 inches to more than a foot of rain. (here, listen to some Beatles) Rachel did her opening 20 minutes on The Dossier last night. I hope all that stuff comes out, soon. Though it’s about a year too late.

  11. Happy Thursday Meese
    I’m late – had to get up early to start work on a course outline for the one class I will be teaching in the Fall – and it is a course I’ve never taught – which will be done in tandem with another professor – and I hate the current syllabus – can’t argue against it unless I have stuff to suggest.
    Sigh.

    • You got hired back for a class? I must have missed that somehow – that is good news. Except for the syllabus problem.

      • Yes – though it prevented me from collecting unemployment over the summer. :(
        Teaching one class only is expensive – gas and tolls – and I lose my health insurance (thankfully hubby has)
        Still don’t know if I get rehired for 2 classes in the spring.

  12. Another one of those days where I was logged out while in the process of writing my check-in comment. Let’s just say it was long and I was stupid to hit post without first copying it just in case. growl. and sigh.

    Short recap – cool and clear today; PV system might get over 400 this month if we average over 19/day for the rest of the month; berners not voting for Hillary are only one of about 6 things – and it took all 6 – that gave the EC win to ppvl45 so while they are maddening, they aren’t any more maddening to me than the other 5; fundraising is making some if slow progress; and I gotta get to work. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  13. Good morning, Meese. Late to check-in for various reasons. Right now it’s partly cloudy at 10:15 with a current temp. of 71 F. It will go up to 78 F. today. We’re in for at least five days of daytime highs in the upper 70s!

    I wonder whether we are going to have an early winter in the DC area. Our backyard and those of the neighbors are seeing groundhogs, rabbits, and deer. I Googled groundhogs and found that they do hibernate, and certainly the two we’ve seen are very fat.

    Too slammed by family stuff to pay much attention to the news. Today I have to take Miss Pink Cheeks to “back to school night” in the middle of the day! What were the teachers thinking? Her parents are not pleased about this.

    Anotherdemocrat, I’m praying that my relatives in Corpus Christi and Bay City aren’t going to experience flooded houses. They don’t have basements in that part of the country. Both my cousin and my aunt assure me that their houses are perched up high, although my aunt says she might pack a “go” bag. Also, I think your sleepless nights are catching! Had the night from hell last night, up at 3, unable to go back to sleep. Bummer.

    Wishing all a good day.

  14. Good morning, 59 and mostly cloudy in Bellingham. I enjoy the fresh air but it will soon be time to start closing some windows. The grand girl’s schools started yesterday so summer is officially over for them.

    I managed to do most of the laundry yesterday and thanks to Sue my house is clean again. So today I might be able to start the fall pruning. It’s the best antidote I have for tRump worries!

    Take care everyone.

  15. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 45 degrees – 45 degrees! – in Madison with an expected daytime high of 68. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

    Good news for the Affordable Care Act – there are no more “bare” counties meaning that every place in America has a marketplace health insurance company willing to provide coverage. So much for the death spiral; the free market decided to offer coverage. End of discussion. Now work in a bipartisan way to fix the ACA.

    Like most people, I am watching Harvey and hoping that the new FEMA head can hit the ground running. After the mess that George W. Bush created, putting hacks in charge of important parts of government including disaster management, the Obama Administration made sure the disaster preparedness and relief was done by professionals. I don’t think the head of the department is as important as it might have been now that we have career professionals staffing the agency. At least I hope so! The good news is that the yam will likely stay out of it as boring until there is a photo opportunity.

    I guess we are going to find out what really happens when the United States government defaults on the debt. We have heard all the warnings and the adults in government always intervened to raise the limit but there are really no adults in charge of our government right now. I just hope my tiny nest egg, a cushion for my retirement, is not destroyed.

    See all y’all later!

  16. Good Friday Meese

    For any tennis fans here – today is Althea Gibson’s Birthday

    Double August celebration for her

    Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters was founded today in Harlem in 1925

  17. It hasn’t started raining yet, but we might get up to 10 inches. I live near a creek, but at the top of the hill, so my place should be fine. I bought groceries yesterday, because Saturday looks like a crappy day to be outside. The store was busy but not “zomg the apocalypse” busy. There was food still on all the shelves. I even brought my gym stuff today, because I think this evening will probably be a better exercise time than tomorrow. 35 mph winds expected tomorrow morning even this far inland. For some reason, U2’s Spanish Eyes is playing in my head.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} – that’s pretty much what my son emailed me. Wet but not dangerous although probably some flooding in low-lying areas. Holding the Good Thought for everybody. Stay safe and dry. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  18. Good morning, Moosekind. It’s a beautiful morning here in NoVa, worthy of Freya Herself. Current temp. is 62 F., going up to 77 F. The window is open and I’m enjoying the cool breeze.

    My cousins in Corpus Christi and aunt in Bay City are fleeing the storm to Austin and Brenham, respectively. M’daughter in Austin refuses to believe anything she’s hearing on TV about the storm, thinks it’s all hype. (Daughter always knows better than anyone else, according to her.) I just hope Austin comes off all right.

    Bought one of those weird wedge-type pillows used by people with acid reflux, which I seem to have, and enjoyed the best night’s sleep I’ve had in ages. What woke me up was a dream that I had a live rattlesnake in a brown paper bag in my fridge. Meant to make soup of it—such a horrifying thought that I jolted into wakefulness instantly.

    Hope everyone will have a peaceful Friday and that nothing much happens.

    • {{{Diana}}} – my Bay City kin were preparing to evacuate yesterday afternoon. I haven’t heard from the Houston lot. The rest of my kin run the line from San Antonio to Fort Worth (I-35 corridor) and should have enough elevation to be safe, if wet.

      Remember, everything in a dream is you – just like everything in the stories you write is you – including that rattlesnake. So something within you potentially dangerous but chilled so too torpid to actually be dangerous that you are planning to transform into an unusual-for-you form of sustenance. (Yes, I’ve eaten rattlesnake. No, it doesn’t taste like chicken.) moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • I read yesterday that when people would refuse to evacuate in Florida, law enforcement would tell them that they were going to write their Social Security number on their arm in indelible ink so that they could get the bodies sorted out easier later. That, apparently, got a lot of people’s attention! I don’t know if it is a true story or not but it made me chuckle.

      I hope everyone stays high and dry. I have once-removed relatives who live in Houston and I hope they are on the move.

    • {{{Denise}}} – not surprised. The bros haven’t taken responsibility for anything – at all – yet. Why would they start now? That said – the sanders-trump supporters weren’t Dems in the first place so we probably didn’t have those votes to lose AND that metric was just one of about 6 combined that took Hillary down (for instance, WI voter list purge 200K, lpv45’s margin 22K – if the voter suppression hadn’t happened the berners could vote for Pogo Possum and it wouldn’t have caused the loss). If we could have changed any single one of the six, Hillary’d be in the White House and we’d be assisting progress instead of resisting the destruction of past progress. moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • The latest now is that they are claiming that the same number of Republicans voted for Hillary so it was a wash. Maybe … but the difference is that the Democrats are not including those folks in their grassroots outreach like they are doing with the Sanders voters.

      What irritates me is that it is obvious those people are not Democrats yet the DNC seems willing to switch everything to undemocratic caucuses and disenfranchising super-delegates to appease them. Fk appeasement! We can win with our base, we don’t have to debase ourselves to suck up to people who are too stupid to understand the two party system.

  19. 59 when I got up, 62 now and heading for 82 – bright and sunny. Yesterday I got the first over 20 KWH day this month (20.8) and the m-t-d is 294.6. Over the life of the system I’ve generated just over 13 MEGAwatthours and prevented 10 tons of CO2 being generated. Not bad for a single person’s 4K roof PV system. If there’s anything that shows “stronger together” applies to just about everything, PV electricity generation has got to be it.

    Any faith in the Rs ability to see beyond “make librul heads explode” I lost a few years back. They’d pull the pin on a hand grenade in an elevator they were riding in just to see the libruls freak out before they all blew up together. So our only hope on debt ceiling/default is that enough of the Rs are corporatists whose masters will pull their chains. My grandmother remembered her grandparents using the phrase ‘not worth a Continental’ – a dollar printed by the Continental Congress – to indicate total worthlessness. While the Rs are stupid enough to go there, most corporations are not.

    Haven’t heard back from any of my fundraiser folks except Mufftootuff – she’s gotten some grocery gift cards that are counted against the fundraiser total because groceries are a large part of what she’s fundraising for. Hope I hear from the rest soon. I will persist.

    Got work to do so will check in on the Villages, then get to it. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
