Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Oct. 1st through Oct. 7th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, 47 and mostly sunny in Bellingham. Another quiet day for me with the pool this morning and what ever happens this afternoon. A given is that my tRump angst means I’ll spend more time than I should checking Twitter.

Time for coffee. Hope it’s a good day for all.

    • I am still not sure if Twitter is a blessing or a curse but I do appreciate a way to find out pretty quickly what is going on in the world – without having to wade through dozens of news site. Now I just have to figure out how to respond to it in a way that keeps me sane! :)

  2. Good morning, meese! Saturday …

It is 66 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 68. Cloudy skies with rain expected this afternoon into the evening.

In case you missed it, the payoff to the religious right for voting for a serial sex abuser and completely immoral man came yesterday. Sessions released his Permission to Discriminate manifesto that allows people to use religion and “personal morality” to deny rights to people they don’t like. This includes LGBT and “women of childbearing age and their families”, initially, and probably people of color next. After all, their bible teaches this:

“White folks and colored folks, you listen to me. You cannot run over God’s plan and God’s established order without having trouble. God never meant to have one race. It was not His purpose at all. God has a purpose for each race.”
    —BOB JONES SR.

The good news is that the ACLU and two states, California and Massachusetts, have already filed suit on the part of this law that impacts birth control coverage under the ACA. But really, Hillary and Trump are the same!

For those who don’t know, Puerto Rico was used as an experiment with the block granting of federal money for food stamps, the “fix” that Republicans want for all federal money going to the states: “let the states distribute the money how they see fit!” Well, the problem with block grants is that the money is sent as x dollars for n people on the program. So if n people becomes n+10,000 people, for example, the x dollars has to then cover 10,000 more people. Excellent maths, doodieheaded Congress! Right now, Puerto Rico cannot afford to expand food assistance to handle the thousands more who need it. You will NOT be shocked to realize that the $29 billion in “budget busting” aid does not include increased funding for the island’s SNAP program, called NAP. And even though 65 percent of supermarkets have reopened many are sill not taking food stamps. People will go hungry.

The Democratic Party Weekly Address is from John Lewis and the subject is commonsense gun laws. I am waiting for a transcript and then I will put it in the Fighting Back post.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Good morning, all. Another hot, sunny day is on the way. The sunlight is falling on the pumpkins stacked up on the front porch of the people across the street. If those pumpkins are real, the homeowners will soon be sorry. I’ve learned never to put them out this early because the chipmunks, rabbits, and squirrels love to binge on them.

There is a rumor that Nate is going to give us some rain.

Believe it was Wordsworth who muttered, “The world is too much with us late and soon.” I’d like to forget the world today and take care of the numerous chores that await: polish the silver, phone in the Swiss Colony order, go on cleaning out the garage, bake a loaf of bread, run to the store, make the chicken pot pie for tonight, and so forth.

Someone said I should go to iTunes to download “Almost Like Praying.” What do I download it to? I don’t have an iPod. I have an iPhone, though. Would that suit? I’ve never listened to music on it because I don’t see how I can use ear buds, considering I’ve got a hearing aid in each year. Suggestions welcomed!

Wishing all a good day and NO BAD NEWS.

    • I listen in iTunes on y computer Diana. I can use ear buds but I usually just let the music play in the background. You can buy simple Bluetooth speakers for your iPhone so you can listen with no wired connection. My grand kids urged me to buy one so I did, but I rarely bother using it. They just think I do, heh!

  4. FEMA took the Puerto Rico recovery statistics off their website but, under pressure, they put them back. The Washington Post has a new interactive that will show not only the current statistics but the trends (which status.pr, now in English) does not show. Not much progress is being made with water. :(

  5. I really like Saturdays. Slept in, hit snooze several times. Watching the news, waiting for Joy Reid’s show. I just need to make lunch this weekend & thaw out some oatmeal, so minimal food prep. I will go to the gym. Yes I will.

  6. 65 and been 65 since about midnight. Saw the moon again early this morning before the clouds moved in – put out the birdseed then stood out there in the moonlight and thanked Her for pulling everything together yesterday. Aji and Wings slept in a real bed in their real house last night (at least that was the plan) – we went from dark despair in the morning to celebrating in the afternoon. The upstairs bedroom is the only room in the house that’s finished but the upstairs bathroom is close enough that they could sort of move in last night. She can breathe and we can breathe – and then get busy and get the job done. :) – meanwhile seriously overcast here and the PV system is just barely on at the moment but I got over 12 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 51.

I am glad that famous people like Lin-Manuel are stepping up for Puerto Rico as that keeps them on the radar. It doesn’t get them the aid they should be getting, would be getting if Hillary were in office, but it’s a whole lot better than nothing. Although I suppose the families of the dead don’t think so. Healing Energy – Health, Home, and Community Energy flowing through the Channel of Good.

Need to go check in with the DK Village – hope the “Fighting Back” clip will copy over as it doesn’t always –
    and work on my Sharing Saturday diary as it posts in a couple of hours. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, 55 and partly sunny in Bellingham. My up and down night finally ended with a few hours of restful sleep. It doesn’t really matter when my day officially starts, but old habits die hard regardless of my retired status!

My new resolve for my sewing room stash is to empty a tote when I think I need a new one, and Wwhen I can keep the rule it helps me edit. So hopefully today all the Christmas fabric will be in one place and some more bags of fabric will go to Ragfinery. I want to do some gift sewing using fabric I already have, but that means I have to find it!

I haven’t checked the news yet so in my small world all’s well. Hope it is for you all too!
