Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Dec. 3rd through Dec. 9th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 30 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 54. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. 30 degrees here in Saugerties NY on a Sunday morning – going up to 46

I’m never awake for SNL – so I depend on clips

    • Great clip! Welcome to hell, indeed. I am not sure where it is all going but if people look at males in power with a more jaundiced eye, we at least are on the right path.

I wonder if this would have come out if Hillary had won or if a lot of this is the reaction to the president* being “elected” even after being exposed as a sexual predator. Many women were shocked to realize that it was not a disqualification and, instead, that 62 million Americans thought it was just fine; quite a kick in the teeth. I know I was shocked – I really believed it would be a bridge too far for even Republicans. Of course, the big problem was that people who were disgusted could register their disgust by voting for a third party candidate – with the blessing of the left of the left. Florida and Wisconsin flipped red because of third party votes – the #NeverTrump’ers feeling righteous that they did not vote for the pig, willfully ignoring how our 2 party system works.

      • I’m sick and tired of those who dub themselves “left”. From my pov – you can’t be “left” if you are sexist and racist and enablers of same.

        Period.

The dogmatic, obdurate, knee jerk so-called leftists – who spend all their time attacking Democrats and chasing Trump voters are making me crazy.

They don’t get that we need to take back the House and make inroads in the Senate. The purity posse all wrapped up in their privilege can take their halos and shove em where the sun don’t shine.

        I need coffee.

        • Yesterday a few of the left-of-the-left’s tweets ended up in my timeline and apparently they are confused about “math” somehow thinking that we can block something with 48 votes when the Republicans have 52. And then when someone pointed that out, they said that our Senators were not adamant enough! JHC!! I saw a clip of Michael Bennet (D-CO), about as boring as Senator as you have ever seen, livid about what the Republicans were doing!

The left-of-the-left’s god, Bernie Sanders, poisoned the general election electorate by giving them permission to register a protest vote instead of voting for Hillary Clinton. He and his “revolution” will literally kill people.

  3. Watching last night’s SNL, my boys were on & of course I love it. Got tea steeping, will make sweet potato-black bean dish later. We’re having Lessons & Carols at church — it’s a century-old Christmas thing, really beautiful. Too warm for tights, I’ll wear sandals.

  4. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! Guess what, we had rain last night, even though the meteorologists gigglingly noted that “if we get light showers they’ll occur after midnight and only in the northeast of our area.” Duh. We’re in the northwest of our area and we evidently had considerable showers. Fine with me. It’s a bright, shiny, rain-washed day, and the little decorated Christmas trees we’ve perched in pots on the front porch appear to be enjoying life. Current temp. in NoVa is 38 F., going up to 55 F.

We had to go out to dinner last night and out to breakfast this morning. Our dining room is full of stuff from the garage and the dining table has been pushed into hubby’s office. The construction crew is putting in insulation and drywall; they’ll paint the walls white (making it a lot brighter in the dark garage) and they’ll do something to the garage floor—power-wash it or paint it or something. It’ll all be over tomorrow.

Meanwhile it is very pleasant to read about the trouble Flynn is in—and by implication, Hair Furor. May it continue.

    • Good morning Diana! How were the kids last night? Did they like your ideas for games?

Also, I posted a diary this morning that I think you might like. :)

      • Basket, we didn’t play any games. After I gave all four Advent calendars and explained what they were, they occupied themselves opening too many of the little doors and scarfing down the miniature chocolates. After that they chased each other through the house while I sat and read the latest Alex Rider thriller on my iPad.

LOVED the post this morning—thank you so much! Going to hire you, WYGal, and bfitz as book publicists if I can get a few more child-tending gigs. Child-tending is a tiring way to make money, though.

  5. Good morning meese. 43 with projected high of 56. It was supposed to have rained overnight somewhere but I don’t think it rained here. Oh well.

Breakfast and coffee and will be back after.

  6. Happy 1st Sunday of Advent if you are that minded. :) It was 55 at dawn and heading for 68 again. Can’t decide whether it wants to be sunny or not. If sunny I won’t need a fire this evening – which will be a good thing as it’ll be really too warm to light one at the time I’d need to light it for it to be throwing out heat when the temps start dropping. Got a hair under 7.3 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d with this morning’s production is 12.7. Just online for a minute to check the weather so I thought I’d check in here as well.

As to the national situation, I have no idea how bad it will get before we can change course even a little but we’ve been blocking damage as best we can for almost a year now. Yes we’re getting tired but we’re also learning how to do it more efficiently. So we persist.

I wish I knew how to attach a picture to a comment – the Village folks sent me a quilt (as in the Village folks paid for it and one of the Village folks created the design and made it) and I’d love to show it off. Aside from the Love it symbolizes just by existing the symbology is wonderful. Flocks of “flying geese” and stylized cats that upside down look like cauldrons.

    Gotta go. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • bfitz, there’s a picture posted by WYgal in this morning’s diary. If you want to try it yourself, I think something like this might work?

      1) Upload the photo to Imgur or another photo sharing site
      2) Get an embed code from them

      • {{{basket}}} – it’s a very nice picture and very nice comments. (It’s a very nice diary BTW.) I’m not sure about going to/joining a photo sharing site. With my luck it will be virus-laden or the directions will be incomprehensible (to me) or both. Oh well. Something somewhere… :) and moar {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, 40 and cloudy in Bellingham. It was to wet and rainy to be comfortable outdoors yesterday so I was in my sewing room instead. Between sewing rings on the curtains for Ron’s study and fiddling with my quilt project I got the lights and kids old stuffed animals on my sentimental tree. I always wonder if it’s worth the effort, but it’s fun to see the kids old handmade ornaments again.

It’s not raining now so I’ll try to do the porches this morning and we’ll get the cut tree for the living room this afternoon.

    Best Sunday wishes to all!

  8. Good morning, meese! Monday …

It is 48 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 57. Cloudy with showers most of the day. An ill wind (or at least a noisy one!) at 3pm blew in the front that will bring us winter weather – a dip into daytime highs in the 30s. Right now there is a lashing rain and occasional thunder.

Republicans in the Trump era have dropped all pretense of caring about people not like them. Chuck Grassley said that working class people shouldn’t get a tax cut because they will just spend it on “booze, women and movies”. And he is not just one unfiltered dotard – he is the out-loud voice of the Republican Party’s contempt for the rest of us. For the record, if I got a tax cut I would use it to help my daughter pay for college. That is really what they fear, middle income people getting educated and challenging their trickle down no-money-for-the-poors bullcrap. And I have no words for Orrin Hatch and his belief that there is money for tax cuts for Betsy DeVos’ college in Michigan but no money for the 9 million kids who will lose health care with CHIP defunded. I am constantly amazed that these men find a way to reconcile their politics with their christianity without their heads exploding.

Lindsey Graham is recommending that Americans leave South Korea because of the imminent war he is jonesing for. What is it with Republicans that bombs being unleashed and innocent people dying gets them orgasmic? They are a cruel and awful political party.

The rest of the news will have to wait – I need to get ahead of my December projects because December 31, 2017 is a hard deadline for a lot of the work.

    See all y’all later!

    • Yes, it’s monstrous how old men are all too eager to send young men to war—they know their ugly asses won’t be on the front line. But what kind of war would this be? Thing and his minions all think a nuclear war would be survivable—and so it might be, for them. There’s a mountain in Virginia with an entire nuke-proof complex, containing a command center and accommodations. WE won’t be inside it. The kleptocrats will.

  9. Didn’t walk this morning, will do it after work. We’re having the warm up before the cold front — it’s 70 this morning, heading to 80 this afternoon. Berners went after Joy Reid over the weekend, and she (and Charlie Crist) responded with pure class. She apologized for stupid stuff she wrote 10 years ago — which was stuff you could probably have read here at the time. Said she will do better. My brain is still playing Love Is Bigger Than Anything In It’s Way . This still gets me, every time:

Write a world where we can belong
to each other and sing it like no other
    Oh
If I could hear myself when I say
    Oh
Love is bigger than anything in its way

  10. Good morning, Moosekind, and happy Moon Day! Did you all see the Super Moon last night? Big, beautiful, and dazzling. It’s currently 29 F. degrees in NoVa, going up to 55 F. later. Frost is thick everywhere this morning.

Lots of errands to do today. Never thought I’d miss cooking but the thing is, when I cook I am in control of the fat, salt, and sugar content of the food. Now that we have to eat out while the construction proceeds, I’m not in control at all. Bummer. Lunch today is leftover Chinese from the restaurant last night. Dinner remains a mystery.

Wishing all a good day with no bad news!

    • I saw the Super-ish Moon last night but the peak viewing time here would have been 2:45am when we were cloud covered and rainy. Last night she was covered in a haze, bidding a full moon farewell to the terrible 2017 year. Our next full moon will be in calendar year 2018, a year that I expect will be much better.

  11. Monday Meese

Got up very early to do some writing and time slipped away – 30 degrees here.
Didn’t bother to look at the news until a few minutes ago.

Reminding myself that all the hate – isn’t new.

    • Murdering black people, that’s all the Fibbies and the police know how to do.

It’s as if the national credo is: “Do not be alive while black.”

Shameful, outrageous, and every other horrible adjective! WHEN will the haters get over their racism?

Decent pay for all workers would be a start.

    • {{{Denise}}} – I wish i thought this was a “last ditch attempt” – but I know better. Haters gonna hate. And when they can get away with it – like now – haters gonna kill. I have Faith that good people, that Loving Kindness, will overcome the Hate and the Haters – but I know that progress toward that goal is cyclic and we will mourn many good people killed by the Haters before we get there. Healing Energy to us all.

      It was so good to talk to you yesterday. Hope I didn’t take up too much of your nap. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  12. Good morning meese. 41-ish with projected high of 58 and a freeze warning for nights/early mornings. I’m tired but I shall get through the day somehow.

  13. 60 pretty much from just after a very cloudy sundown (so no Supermoon – although Saturday evening’s almost full moon was pretty super) to now. Still very overcast, heading for 64 and probably diddly squat for electricity generation today. Rain projected for about the time I get home from work. Got 7.4 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is sitting at 19. If we don’t get a break in the clouds I don’t expect to get more than 2 – if we’re lucky – over the course of the day. But it’s early in the month yet. There’s still time to catch up.

I never have and hope I never will understand overt, blatant, run-wild evil such as we are seeing right now. It obviously exists but it is so incredibly short-sighted. Covert evil is what allowed them to get into Power. Good people have an unfortunate habit of minding their own business and not noticing covert evil unless it happens to them or their family – and even then they don’t recognize it as systemic – so the evil ones can gain wealth and power hand over fist. As long as they keep it covert. As long as they steal the gold egg as soon as the goose lays it and say “egg? what egg? there wasn’t any egg today.” they get away with it. But when they’re “loud and proud” of their evil, when they hurt little kids and blame the kids for it, when they try to kill the goose so they can get all the eggs at once (which has never worked but they are too faith-based to know) – well, good people notice and rise up to stop them. And we outnumber them. We will succeed.

I don’t know how to post a picture here at Moose (and the picture I want to post isn’t on this computer anyway) but I know how to copy a link – here’s the link to a comment in last night’s Evening Edition that shows the lovely quilt the Village folks gave me – they all chipped in on the cost and one of the Village folks actually created the design and made it. Love made manifest gives Strength and Energy in it’s purest form to be Channeled out into the world. https://www.dailykos.com/comments/1720713/68550299#comment_68550299

    Gotta get back to work. Some travel claims coming in still, November leave to get and process, stuff like that. Bright the Day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • {{{bfitz}}} Good to see you, lady.

I saw the Moon last night and took a picture, thinking to send it to you and Diana, but it didn’t come out properly. Oh well.

      • {{{basket}}} – worked just fine. It is so beautiful. And Powerful. It’s funny how the stylized cats upside down look like cauldrons. I’ve never done the sort of “spell casting” that requires a cauldron – but it’s excellent symbology for cooking up community-supported “stone soup” for nourishing everyone including the stranger within our gates. Thank you. moar {{{HUGS}}} and Healing Energy (and skritches to Belle)

  14. The orange shitgibbon continues to try to erase President Barack Obama’s legacies. But all he does is serve to remind us of how awful he is and the terrible things that he and his party stand for. Payback will be fierce.

  15. Good morning, meese! Tuesday …

It is 34 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 30. Yesterday we set a high of 61! Anyway, the front hit at about 11pm with sustained winds of 25 mph and gusts to 40. Sleep was nearly impossible so I will be dragging through my day which will unfortunately have no breaks for a nap.

Days like yesterday are discouraging as there are no short term fixes to any of the awful things the Republicans are doing to our country. I don’t have any illusions that the Supreme Court, with Western rights “Justice” Gorsuch on it, will protect the Antiquities Act or the right of presidents to save our country’s natural resources for future generations. I am amazed at how quickly and thoroughly good government can be eradicated. It is like these guys know that their time is limited and they are planning to destroy it all – and spike the wells – before they leave. Damn them!

    See all y’all later!

    • {{{Jan}}} – Healing Energy to get you through the day (week, month…) – and that’s exactly what’s going on. They know what they are doing is Evil. They know their time is limited. So they are doing as much damage as possible and yes, poisoning the wells as they retreat. This is a war. They are a raiding party. But they can only dismantle “good government” so quickly because they’ve had 5th columnists weakening the supports since about 1993. moar {{{HUGS}}} and Healing Energy

  16. Good morning, Moosekind! It’s dark as pitch at 6:28, and the sky must be cloudy because the moonlight keeps trying to break through. It’s 46 F. now in NoVa, going up to 62 F. later today because of the rain forecast for the afternoon.

Yesterday I managed to accomplish several errands, which made me happy. The construction crew is nearly finished with the work—just one more coat of paint for the family room and some touch-up painting here and there. Today is a gym day, so I won’t get quite as much done.

Tomorrow I have to accompany my husband to outpatient surgery at a medical center a dozen miles away. We have to leave at an appallingly early hour, sit like rocks for two and a half hours before he’s seen at 10:30, and then I have to drive him home hours later. He’s having anesthesia, so he’s going to feel rotten. He also has to fast. What a bummer.

Anyway, that’s how things are at Barky Manor. Hope nothing too awful happens in the world so we can all have a peaceful day.

  17. It was in the 70s when I woke up around 5, it’s 55 & raining at 6:30. Texas weather. Didn’t do my mile yesterday, because my hip felt…..off. Not painful, just, not right. Walking carefully this morning, asking it how it feels about things. And yes, my head is still playing U2.
