Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Dec. 17th through Dec. 23rd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Drismal and grey Saturday here in the Catskills
    31 with sleet

I am elated to see so many young women running for office

    • I’m following her now. We have a lot of excellent candidates with impressive resumes. Quite a few candidates are coming from the ranks of ex-military. It is probably helpful to inoculate them from “hates America” but it is a bit sad that “community organizer” or “former ACLU attorney” are not met with the same amount of respect for their patriotism.

I hope you don’t have to go anywhere! The entire Northeast looks like they are getting frozen in.

      • I hear you – though former military is no shield in today’s America – even being Republican and former military is no shield against the Trump cabal.

I have to go to the store and the bank – a short drive and hubby will drive me in his car which is our heavier Subaru – so safer.

Am feeling really sad for a very special person – Chef Bobby Neary Sánchez who Kos folk know as Bobby or newpioneer
        He made this comment

Angrier and angrier right with you, hermanita. Today marks the 92nd day and here un Cupey (San Juan metro area) we’re still without power. 70% with power on the island? MY ASS

Don’t have much battery left so I have to go. Felíz Navidad, querida. Te quiero mucho.

Bobby was not on the island during the hurricanes – has since then returned – he has worked so long and hard doing animal rescue – and looking out for others when he has been through so much.

You can follow him on twitter – though he can’t get on much.

  2. WTF is wrong with MSNBC?

Why are they firing Joan Walsh?

    • I think that new management at NBC was alarmed to discover that MSNBC was considered the network of the resistance and this is just more chipping away at that so that they can be another Republican cheerleader cable channel. Didn’t they hire Hugh Hewitt and don’t they regularly have Ann Coulter on? I don’t watch cable TV news because I think that they all dropped the ball in the 2016 campaign, CNN especially but MSNBC also. I became disgusted by the pro-Sanders bent from Hayes and Maddow and how they made their viewers believe that Hillary was a “hold your nose and vote for her” choice.

I think Joan Walsh now writes for The Nation which is another bad fit for her. Those guys are going completely off the rails, writing “think” pieces about Nina Turner for president. I won’t click on Salon and I won’t click on The Nation any longer.

I hope they have an explanation for her firing and/or they keep her on. I think there was a Save Lawrence O’Donnell campaign that kept him on the air.

    • The Right hates her because she’s a librul and the Left hates her because she, after considering the facts, because a strong Hillary supporter. I’m surprised she lasted as long as she has in the current political/media climate. Which doesn’t mean we should just accept this – we should do our best to get her back. But she’ll always be a target from both sides.

  3. Good morning, meese! Saturday …

It is 19 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 21. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. The bad weather will be well south of us but we will be plunged into the deep freeze. Monday we will see our first below zero temperatures of the season and Tuesday the high will be only 9.

The Orange Orshole has left Washington which should make the news more palatable for the next week. It is easy to avoid the classless billionaire “think” pieces that will be filed from Palm Beach. It was more difficult to avoid the votes and signings. I was laughing at the headline about Trump not having an end of year news conference like it was breaking news that he has no interest in any of the traditions of the office that the worst of the worst voted him into. I wish the press would get a clue. I am also sick of the stories about sad autoworkers who believed Don the Con about their jobs. There was plenty of evidence during the campaign that he was a lying sack of crap and that he built his business empire on the bodies of the people he duped and defrauded. The sad Trump voters can rot.

Today we will have our Solstice feast. Yesterday I hunted and gathered – holy mackeral, holiday traffic was awful – and we spent the afternoon watching a movie. We opened gifts last night and today will be a meal and – who knows? Our traditions are not locked in, the only constant is acknowledging the beauty of our earth and her cycles.

    See all y’all later!

    • Jan, this sounds like a lovely, peaceful Solstice celebration. In the days when I worked, I often took off the week between Christmas and New Year just to think. It’s a reflective time of year, to me. We think over the past year and resolve to do some things differently in the coming year. It’s comforting.

      Enjoy your day and weekend!

  4. Good gray Saturday morning, Meese. It rained during the night, although it doesn’t seem to be doing it now. The online Patch newspaper is excitedly predicting “snowflakes” in our area on Christmas morning. I sweartagoddess, that newspaper is run by giddy ten-year-olds brought up in the Sahara desert. Anyway, it’s 44 F. here in NoVa now, going up to 62 F. This is Vegetarian Night, so must think what to prepare for dinner.

My darling daughter-from-Austin sent me a box of Caramel Tarts yesterday, so I’ll take those to the family Christmas Eve party tomorrow night. Now I won’t have to make the applesauce cake I was going to make. Still have to make mince pies, hard sauce for the plum pudding, and various other things, however.

Another day of work, work, work for the night is coming. Thank goodness we’re mostly staying at home today; all we really have to do is pick up a table from Younger Son’s house. I’m still staying away from the news, just can’t take it right now.

Wishing a peaceful day to all at the Pond and Beyond.

  5. Cold for Texas — 38, but yesterday’s rain is gone. Today I swear I’m going to tackle that shoe shelf situation. And go to the gym. Seriously. Seeing all the stories about the tax bill & how charities might suffer because people won’t be deducting donations….maybe I’ll write another AIDS Ride diary.

  6. 29 just before dawn and not much higher now, also still very overcast. We are supposed to get up to 40 today with some sun. Which will be good because there’s 1/2″ of snow on my solar panels and they won’t come out of night mode until it melts or sublimes off. I was right about yesterday, We got 2/3s of one KWH – the m-t-d is 126.5 – not possible to make the 200 for the month,, still possible to make 180 but not likely. Over 150 is very much in the ballpark. We shall see what we shall see with this as with everything else.

Evil Ones still being Evil. People still being hurt, still dying of it. Not sure what, if anything, else I can do – but if I find something, I’ll do it. I will not accept, I do not accept deliberately hurting people for fun and profit – and by people I include all living beings and the planet Herself. Life and death is the cycle of Life – I thank the Spirit of what I eat for the gift of Life and Health, and I promise that I will not waste it. But enjoying hurting things, not caring that someone or something is hurt or worse, doing it deliberately for profit – that is Evil. So I will do my best to resist, block, and push back what the Evil Ones are trying to do. And I will do my best to help those hurt by their Evil.

    It’s arfin’ cold here today. Yes, I know you folks up north have it a lot worse. But it’s still arfin’ cold here today. :) – I need to tend the fire and schlep in more firewood from the stack I schlepped onto the porch yesterday. Everybody stay warm if you can but stay safe no matter what. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, 29 and a winter sky in Bellingham. Our Seattle daughter and her family arrives today for an overnight visit. We’ll exchange gifts with them and have an easy dinner planned. Our grandson is enjoying school and his activities this year so I’m looking forward to being with him and having time to talk together. It’s fun when the whole family is here but it’s to busy for real conversation.

My endless December list is nearly all checked off, yay! I’m weary but very grateful. Best wishes to all.
