Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Jan. 21st through Jan. 27th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 30 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 45. Sunny this morning and showers this afternoon.

    I am trying to understand what the purpose of the White House immigration “offer” is. Democrats don’t like it, Republicans don’t like it … and Tom Cotton and Stephen Miller do like it. I suspect that they will try to suck Senate Democrats into passing it, letting House Republicans pass their even worse bill and then sending it to die in conference. If it is tied to the February 8th date, Democrats should stay away from it. We need a clean DREAMer fix before we fund the government, not the promise of more negotiations and a deadlock that leaves DACA kids in limbo on March 5th. I have to admit that I don’t have a lot of confidence in the guys on our side doing the negotiating. I know that they have a terrible hand to play but they don’t seem like our A team. I hope I am wrong.

    Am I petty for being pleased that world leaders and global elites are openly displaying their contempt for Donald Trump, reality TV host miscast as president of the most powerful country on the planet?

    See all y’all later!

  2. Friday morning Meese
    15 degrees here in Saugerties NY – going up to 36 – looked at the long range forecast and we have snow on the menu

    Talked to Chef Bobby (newpioneer) on the phone yesterday – the conditions he reports from PR are dire – imagine this …the traffic lights (and most of the streetlights) are not working in the San Juan metro area of over 2,350,000 thousand people

    He’s going to post a diary – I think later today – will let you know
    No updates on Ono yet

    • Here are the updates that I saw in the Ono diary:

      Thursday, Jan 25, 2018 · 3:09:01 PM CST · Yasuragi
      Ono will get a stent and a defibrillator tomorrow.

      Thursday, Jan 25, 2018 · 6:01:23 PM CST · Yasuragi
      Had a brief conversation with a very tired Onomastic, and she said to send you all her gratitude, and lots and lots of love. She’s very thankful.

      Thursday, Jan 25, 2018 · 8:20:22 PM CST · Yasuragi
      Ono has been transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital for tomorrow’s surgery. Resting in moderate comfort, and sending love and hugs and “deepest mind-blown gratitude” to all of you.

  3. Warm this morning — barely needed a jacket. Oatmeal, tea. Not super coherent this morning. All good thoughts to Ono.

  4. Good morning, Meese, and a beautiful sunrise we’re having despite the frost. Current temp. in NoVa is 20 F., going up to 48 F. We’re expecting a warmup for Saturday and rain on Sunday.

    After lunch I’ll be off to a Women’s Writing Getaway in a place rather oddly named Bumpass, Virginia. Quite a risible name to one with an insanitary mind! That’s okay. I just hope I can get there—I am the world’s worst driver. People say to use Maps on the iPhone, but I’ll be alone in the car, so there’s no one to hold the iPhone for me. Dearly Beloved is going to the AAA store this morning to find a device that attaches to the dashboard, if such a thing can be found.

    Enough of that. Feeling terrible about Ono and hope she will recover quickly. What kind of country charges for ambulances? When I saw the Michael Moore film “Sicko,” I was amazed to learn that British hospitals don’t even have a payment office—just a little kiosk from which they dispense money for the bus or Tube to help discharged patients go home.

    Will check in tomorrow and Sunday if possible, but the iPad kinda acts up when I ask it to find the Moose Pond. Apart from missing all of you, it’ll be nice to get away from Trumpism for a while!

    Wishing everyone a good day and better news for PR and Ono.

  5. 44 feels like 36 and cloudy – yesterday I got the (current) 2nd highest for the month at 9.1 KWHs and the m-t-d is 174 – unless this clears off by noon not gonna get to 180 today. But we still have 6 days to get to the 200 goal. Holding the Good Thought for Ono – will light a candle for her in a bit but I’m taking my friend to the clinic in about 20 minutes (this flu is kicking her butt – she’s on the 4th full day of it – really good thing she’s got paid sick leave and a sympathetic Dept Chair). As with Aji, one with such a loving heart as Ono has should get special attention from The Primal Will To Good.

    Evil Ones being evil – we’re doing our best to block them. We may have run out of sand for the sandbags though – we’ll have to see. I trust Schumer and Pelosi to get the best deal we can. I don’t trust that the best deal we can get will actually be good. We shall see what we shall see.

    Need to do a few things before my friend is ready to go. I’ll check back when I can. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning, 39 and cloudy in Bellingham. No wheezing and coughing last night, yay! And I feel well enough to go to the pool this morning so I must be getting better.

    Best wishes to all.

    • {{{princesspat}}} – so very glad you’re doing better! my friend is having the symptoms you were but was just told she tests negative for both flu and pneumonia – they can’t seem to tell her what she does have though. sigh. Whatever everybody’s getting I get time to cover the world with Healing Energy to be shaped to the need. Healing Energy and moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • I think I retweeted it three or four times, every time I saw it show up in my stream. :)

  7. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 36 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 43. Sunny skies are in the forecast. Shorts weather!! Well, not quite but definitely a January thaw.

    A quick scan of the news suggests that Mueller is putting the finishing touches on the obstruction of justice indictments. The flurry of press “leaks” would not be happening if they were still in the investigation phase – they would keep what they were doing pretty close to the vest. The next phase is the “catch them in a lie” phase. The frenzy in the Republican Congress to discredit Mueller and the FBI shows just how nervous they are. I still don’t think that they will indict Trump – or that Republicans will ever remove him from office – but every minute they are spending on protecting his orange arse is a minute they can’t devote to destroying our country.

    I have been watching the Michigan State scandal closely to see if the press will allow the university and the U.S. Gymnastics organization to get off with a few resignations. The MSU athletic director stepped down after a tearful goodbye. He should be stepping down into an orange jumpsuit for his part in the coverup. He knew in 2010 that there were problems and he purposely ignored them. And Betsy DeVos and the now former president of MSU worked closely together to remove Title IX protections for women being raped on campus. I hope their asses are sued until they are left to live in cardboard boxes. I have a daughter about to leave home to live on a campus and knowing that the government has thrown its lot in with the MRAs makes me angry. I will never understand what drives women to protect male rapists. They must not have daughters.

    I got a couple of tweaks done to my FireFox UI and it looks a little less foreign to me. I still have a few more to make and then I think I can live with it. Right now I am irritated that it is transparent and I can see my messy virtual desktop behind the title bar. On what planet would that be a desirable feature??!!?

    Saturday morning means catching up from the week’s client crises and getting my notes organized so I need to get to it.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Saturday Meese
    25 here in Saugerties NY going up to a toasty 45.

  9. Slept in, next Saturday is the 1st training ride & I should go to it. Setting out berries to thaw so I can make oatmeal. Going to clean house today, got a funeral to go to tomorrow afternoon. A friend from church died in a traffic accident when we had the ice. Life’s arbitrariness…. I just looked around my apartment & thought if that had been me instead of her, someone would have to clean up after me & that’s not fair. Anyway, that’s my weekend: cooking, cleaning, church, funeral. Should send out some e-mails about the Ride.

  10. 45 and feels like 36 – heavy fog this morning but starting to clear off. Only got 3.8 KWHs yesterday, m-t-d is 178.2 – if we average at least 5 KWHs the rest of the month we’ll make that 200 total goal. Which is good. I got my latest SWEPCO statement yesterday and being home all the time has just about doubled my electricity usage for mid-December to mid-January. I hope my 4K system can handle me not being gone 9 or more hours a day 5 days a week. The difference is mostly in coffeemaker, toasted cheese sandwiches for lunch, and the computer being on most of the time.

    Last I heard Ono’s stent is in and she’s recovering nicely – the defib will go in sometime next week. Aji’s new meds are sort of rearranging when she has the episodes but haven’t stopped them yet (and they seriously need sales – she tweeted out their entire inventory one at a time yesterday afternoon and evening). My friend doesn’t test positive for flu or pneumonia puzzling the heck out of the doctor who gave her a nebulizer because her “chest is tight” and said to keep doing what she’s been doing. And I may or may not be coming down with something because my chest is also tight. Oh well.

    Evil Ones still being evil – very hard to stop people who want to destroy and kill by telling them that their actions will destroy and kill. Meanwhile with the help of some friends I’m starting to attach my old “helping links” via the comment in my last DK diary to the Puerto Rico tweets. They’re from 11/5/17 but hopefully are still good. I need to find a place to “stash” that link so I can get to it when I need it. And we shall see what we shall see. I’m off to do a tour of the internets and get some coffee. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • If you have a tweet that you want to periodically retweet, you can save it as a link and then just quote tweet it when you want to. I have a Word document on my desktop where I keep those. For example, Sdf Stu, who I used to blog with in the old Morning Feature, tweeted out an electoral college comment right after the election – or the inauguration – that I retweet periodically. I just open up Twitter, paste the tweet link and then put my words over it.

      The link to a tweet can be found from the address bar or via a right-click on the date/time stamp.

      • Not sure I understand about the link to the tweet – but I’m working on it. Thanks and {{{HUGS}}}

  11. Good morning, 48 and partly sunny in Bellingham. Another slow and sleepy morning, but my head is full of music. I stuffed my pockets with lozenges and tissues and we saw Rosanne Cash and John Leventhal perform at The Mt Baker Theatre last night. It was very fun but I wobbled back to the car.

    Take care everyone.

    • {{{princesspat}}} – glad you enjoyed the music. Music is Healing – more {{{HUGS}}}
