Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Feb. 11th through Feb. 17th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Morning high was 57 just after midnight, 37 windchill 25 right now and dropping. “Spozed to stay above freezing but that’s about it. Overcast but at least the system is generating a trickle and not in night mode. Got 9.8 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 116.8 – maybe, if it clears off a bit, we’ll get over 120 today. At the moment that’s a big if.

    Something weird going on with the Moose. I make a reply – as in write it, preview it, and then hit post – and the screen goes to an error message about Moose not receiving data, but when I close the tab and then reopen my reply is there. Hope this one is once I’ve hit post. :)

    Not sure what I’m gonna do today. Yesterday was lovely weatherwise, I brought the rest of the firewood onto the porch so it could dry but the day was too warm for a fire. I went for a walk around the neighborhood – haven’t done that in months – and aired out the house. Today is dank, chilly, intermittent spates of “wintry mix” drizzle – I’d bake something just for the warmth and cheery smells if I could think of anything to bake. LOL. Oh well. I’ll think of something. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • OK – the comment above went through as normal. Let’s see what happens with a reply to a comment.

    • Welp, whatever was wrong seems to have gone away. moar {{{HUGS}}} to everybody. And lots of Healing Energy.

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 16 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 30. Snow flurries are in the forecast.

    I was offline most of yesterday and found a Friday news dump waiting for me! I am not sure how the Angry Apricot got “proof there was NO COLLUSION” (all caps from the White House!) from the Mueller indictment handed down but we do know that he does not read so he was probably told that by one of his staff. Fox News didn’t cover it so he may not find out until his son-in-law and son are hauled away in handcuffs! Anyway, the most important takeaway had better be that strong Russian sanctions must be followed through on and that election security – including figuring out how to block Russian trolls – needs to begin now.

    The Democratic Party’s Weekly Address was by three Democratic Senators talking about the Republican tax cut bill. JHC, clueless Democrats!! There was a mass shooting at a Florida school, young people are rising up and calling out the Republican puppets of the NRA and commonsense gun control is on the verge of becoming a big issue for Generation Z. They will NOT vote for the party that put the assault rifle in the hands of the man who murdered their classmates and who doesn’t give a damn about them or their future. Anyway, I am going to put Nancy Pelosi’s presser at the top of the Fighting Back post. The tax bill was bad but it is not the worst thing happening in America right now.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Good Saturday Morning Meese
    Been up since about 3AM – 27 here now and we have – ugh – snow!
    Am getting ready to post a diary at DKos on the situation with Puerto Rican evacuees – whose FEMA assistance has been or will be cut off – in the flood of other major news – it is going overlooked
    Help me get the word out please.
    My students yesterday were all focused on the Florida school shootings and they are all paying really close attention – they unanimously said they want to see gun control – many are kids from homes where most of their parents have guns, and some of them told me they hunt. They pointed out that nobody in their right mind uses an AR-15 to hunt deer.

    • Kids get that no one needs an AR-15, they get that Republicans are the ones blocking commonsense gun control, and they are getting ready to vote. They are already down on Republicans for their anti-diversity anti-environment anti-immigration anti-student pro-ugly-American positions – this will be another reason to never vote for Republicans. Florida has one of the loosest set of laws regarding gun ownership and use but our local paper was quick to point out that our gun laws are so lax that the same thing could have happened here. :(

      With the news filled to the brim with the Mueller indictments, it is going to be difficult to cut through with Puerto Rico news. You might be cheered to know that good people are aware of what is happening in Puerto Rico; at a college visit I attended yesterday, the welcomer mentioned to the gathering where the prospective students came from and when she said that there was a student from Puerto Rico, there was a big round of applause. Of course, this was on a lefty librul CAMPUS so we would hope that parents and students would be a bit more aware than the average person. But still.

      • Thanks for sharing about the student’s response!
        I know most people aren’t paying attention – I refuse to let that stop me from making the attempt to keep the story in the news – even if one or two people hook up with groups in their cities helping evacuees – it is worth it to keep posting

  4. Good morning, Meese! It’s a beautiful but frosty Saturday here, with a current temp. in NoVa of 31 F., going up to 40 F. later. Haven’t decided what to serve for dinner, this being Vegetarian Night, but it’ll have to be something quick. I have a child-tending job down the street tonight.

    We’re expecting some nasty weather later today, but unlike Denise’s and Jan’s situation, our snow will be imaginary. It practically always is. However, freezing rain and sleet will be quite nasty enough.

    Well, Friday was certainly interesting, with a little taste of “Mueller time”! I wonder whether this latest school massacre will finally be the turning point. A FB trope that keeps turning up is that it’s strange how “mental health” never causes mass deaths in Australia, Canada, and the U.K. Yes, isn’t it!

    Dearly wants me to watch the last of the ice skating, which we recorded. We did see Nathan Chen’s absolutely stellar free skate, which was a delight to watch. I’m sorry about Puerto Rico, which seems to be No. 1 on the Rethug “People and Places to Ignore” list, but will tip and rec Dee’s diary.

    Wishing a peaceful Saturday to all.

    • This is the first time in ages I haven’t watched the Olympics skating :(
      Have been too obsessed with PR – maybe I can go back and watch some of the video.
      Thanks Sis

  5. Skipping this morning’s training ride. It’s too much for me. I will ride some this afternoon. Watching local news, waiting for Joy Reid’s show. Going to visit Min this afternoon — I’ll ride after that.

  6. Good morning, 41 and raining in Bellingham. This awful flue virus just won’t go away! I’ve been sneezing and wheezing again and it’s made me very grouchy. Our son had the same recovery up and downs so I know what to expect, just don’t like it.

    We may have snow here later today so it’s fortunate my primroses are still not planted. Mobile primroses can easily move in and out of the garage :)

    Take care everyone.

  7. 39 windchill 33 and might make it up to 50. maybe. Got some actual rain overnight, not much, and it’s stopped now – not quite a mist, call it heavy air – but damp and chilly. It never exactly cleared off yesterday but it did “lighten up” enough that we got 7.8 KWHs yesterday which is at least more than I use in a normal day. The m-t-d is 125 – we shall see what we shall see for the rest of the month.

    Mueller dropped a shoe yesterday – vindication for us Hillary folks who knew what we were up against and kept being trashed for “blaming everyone except Hillary” but vindication really doesn’t feel all that good under the circumstances. But Mueller’s got more shoes – like enough to keep a cavalry regiment shod – so we shall see what we shall see there, too. We might actually manage to get at least a reinstatement of the assault weapons ban this time. The kids are old enough to help. They were there. They were sending out messages while under fire. They know “yes, it is about guns” and they aren’t backing down. Some of them will be old enough to vote in November. The rest will be old enough to vote in 2020. They aren’t going to forget – or forgive. They can’t do it alone but we really are very strong together and with their help we may actually make change. Other than helping “one heart at a time” as Chef Bobby put it, the best we can do for Puerto Rico right now is not let it fall through the cracks. Denise can’t do that alone, but if we RT and our followers RT, well, there will at least be a string to grab onto once we have Congress back.

    Done my shopping and did a quick run to the Post Office – closes at noon on Saturdays and will be closed Monday for Presidents’ Day – spent a bunch more money than usual but well worth it. At least if the recipients of what I bought think so. :) Need to do a tour of the internets then get some stuff in the crockpot/instant pot for dinner. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
