Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Mar. 4th through Mar. 10th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. 48 windchill 42 and heading for the mid 60s today. Forecast says partly cloudy but the skies are clear at the moment. Got 16.5 KWHs yesterday – 3rd day in a row for over 16! – and the m-t-d is 112 so still heading for 400 or above for the month. I like that. :)

    Was focusing more on the stagnant gofundme for Franki than on much of the news but did catch that Deplorable Asheville one. People on the “left” just really did not pay attention to what Hillary was saying, they were so busy trashing her for saying it. You don’t change hearts and minds – you change policy and allocation of resources. By putting a blatant white male supremacist in the WH, what piddly policies that were at least making things better than they were in the ’60s & 70s are now being ignored when not flat rolled back. Until we get another Dem at the very least it will do nothing but get worse. It’s not going to get better until we get a Dem who implements Hillary’s policies. Until we manage to break up or at least circumvent the RW media consortium that owns 90% of the MSM and influences the rest that ain’t gonna happen. sigh.

    Aji suggested I DM a couple of the “Home for Aji” team and see if they can do a fundraiser for Franki. I just did that. We shall see what we shall see. Meanwhile I need to check in or on the Village diaries and tour the internets before getting some offline stuff done. Including a walk when it warms up a bit. I stayed online all day yesterday monitoring Franki’s gofundme and my eyes are still paying for it. Not gonna do that today. Whether it moves or not, it won’t make any difference if I check on it every couple of hours rather than every couple of minutes – and the former is healthier for me. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  2. Good morning, 42 and mostly sunny in Bellingham. I’m trying to decide between going to the pool this morning or working in the garden this afternoon. I used to be able to do both but now I have to chose, and yes, I’m fortunate to have such choices!

    Take care everyone.

    • From the 30th Anniversary of the March on Washington:

      (Link)

      I hope her connection with TheirRevolution doesn’t submarine her campaign. She is a solid Democrat and their “we hate Democrats” rhetoric might be off-putting to her ground troops. Quite frankly, I am not sure how an alliance with Bernie Sanders helps her in a state he dissed.

      She has an impressive resume and – she was born in Madison Wisconsin! I wonder if her father went to school here because she did not stay long.

        • I remember that thread – it was epic! The bernie party will not win in the South without black people and by dissing the party of John Lewis and Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. A party built on one man’s ego might last a cycle or two but their roots are shallow and they will be washed away in the first strong storm. Good lord, one of their berned-out-brain-cell pundits in an op-ed in the Hill suggested that Sanders would be the leading candidate followed by Joe Biden followed by Joe Kennedy III. Kamala Harris was mentioned as a possible VP for Kennedy. On what planet do these people live on where you can take one of our strongest candidates and make her a VP choice of a 30 year old man who is a fine speaker and has solid Democratic Party DNA but who has not really done anything except run for Congress from a safe district?

          Any 2020 scenario that does not include Kamala Harris, Corey Booker, and Chris Murphy is fueled by unicorn poops. And the quickest way to lose the young kids who want to be Democrats is to say that two old white guys are the best our party has to offer.

  3. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 18 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 37. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Strange news week and most of it is empty calories. The steady drip drip drip of Trump administration scandals is tiring and I have no doubt that the salacious nature of the Stormy Daniels story is what is driving that to the top of every news page. It will not matter – there cannot possibly be anyone who will turn away from Trump in disgust because of this story if they were fine with the Access Hollywood tape.

    In news that does matter, Dale Ho from the ACLU had a good day in court in Kansas City Kansas where he is suing to stop the Kansas rule requiring that voters provide proof of citizenship. He got professional disenfranchiser Hans Von Spakovsky to admit that he lied and that he is a liar about voter fraud. The good guys appear to be winning.

    Rick Scott signed a law that is a modest first step and the NRA promptly sued. I have no doubt that they will find a judge to issue a stay but the test of the “Republican Party’s third rail” (defying the NRA) will be interesting to observe. We need to turn “killing our kids” into a Decent Person’s Third Rail.

    The Democratic Party Weekly Address is on the tax cut bill that is rapidly losing support now that it is exposed for the massive giveaway to corporations that it is. Democrats released a tax scam repeal bill that it sounds like they plan to run on. The money saved will be used for a $1 trillion infrastructure program that actually builds infrastructure!

    See all y’all later!

  4. Good Saturday Meese
    Got to get to work cleaning out our two spare bedrooms which we have used as storage space – my goddaughter is moving in with us.

    We have too much darned “stuff” which I’ve been meaning to sort through and get rid of for years.
    Now I have to do it. Though not moving like Diana it feels like it.

    Moving into Day 172

    • Diana’s move is inspiring me to start planning for my empty nest move. We have only been here for about 14 years – and did a lot of pruning in the move before this one – but those years included most of my daughter’s childhood. We have a lot of accumulated kid stuff and there is really no reason to keep it. She recommended going after each room: one drawer, one closet at a time to spread it out and make the actual move easier. There is a neighborhood-wide rummage sale in late spring that would be a good starting point.

  5. Good morning, Moosekind! Clear, cold, and snowless on this 11th day of March. At the moment on this dim, bluish-gray Saturday morning in NoVa it’s 22 F., going up to 49 F. later today.

    Yesterday a man from the moving company came over to give us an estimate. He took one look at our feeble attempts to pack and suggested that two people from his company come over on Thursday to finish it all. That way, he said, on Friday his crew of three can just focus on loading the truck and trundling down the road to Ashby Ponds, 10 miles away. We can’t actually move in until 1 p.m., though.

    The HOA has said they’ll hand down a decision on Monday. (Sounds like the Supreme Court!) Bfitz, it’s not that they didn’t do anything for all these years—it’s the fact that we didn’t realize we had to get their permission to buy and erect a backyard shed, put up a fence, and install a screen door in the front. Hope they don’t make us take it all down.

    Today we’ll focus on getting things to Goodwill. What they don’t take we’ll haul to the dump. Luckily Goodwill is pretty good about taking unwanted objects. The pressure cooker, electric skillet, and cake stand will have to go, among other things.

    Lost of what my mother would have called “piddley” chores remain to be done, so I hope to get them done today. Don’t forget we’re all going to lose an hour’s sleep tonight, and Dee and Jan, good luck with the organizing. Don’t start with the photographs, otherwise you’ll get sidetracked to the max!

    • I think I will digitize all the photos and then donate the prints to either the Smithsonian or the Schomburg

    • I was going to worry more about the boxes and boxes of books – I have no idea what to do with them and thinking about tossing them in the recycle bin makes me sad.

      It is not surprising that your big kitchen appliances have to go. We keep a lot of things in our house-based kitchens that we use occasionally (or used to use) and they take up a lot of space. I have a Barista and a bread making machine, for example, that have been used once in the last 10 years. Someone with a bigger kitchen will, I hope, want them.

      Good luck with the HOA!

    • {{{Diana}}} – good luck – but what I’m talking about is that while you didn’t get permission as you should have, that happened years ago. The fact that they did not contact you over the additions at any time since you did them – and it’s been years – says they don’t value their “rights” enough to enforce them until right now when they could potential scuttle the sale. There could possibly be a “statute of limitations” on enforcing them – and they are definitely potentially harming the real estate agent. I wish you had a lawyer in the family. :) moar {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Slept in — I really like Saturdays, hitting snooze feels so luxurious. I have a noon visit with Min, though every time I check the page it says she’s asleep. Then, either I’m going to Wrinkle In Time (if I can use a raincheck ticket — which I doubt) or a Beto O’Rourke event at Scholz’s — which should be crowded enough that they won’t notice I’m not buying anything. Brain is playing Bad, which is a gorgeous song that Bono wrote about/for his best friend from childhood who was addicted to heroin.

  7. Good morning, 35 and sunny in Bellingham. I decided to work in the garden yesterday and with RonK’s help the deer munched ivy by the back stairs and entrance patio is looking much better. We even got some primroses planted in the pots.

    Time for coffee. Take care everyone.

  8. So, this day really, really sucks. Just as AM Joy was starting, I heard dripping water, and there’s a leak of some kind in my front bathroom, I’ve called the a/c repair people. (it hasn’t even been running — what the hell??) So there goes the May trip. And Minerva’s daughter texted me that she passed this morning. So I have to keep it together, because the repair person has been dispatched — and there is a lot of water dripping from my ceiling.

    • I was going to have to cancel the trip anyway, because I owe the HOA $400 because of a mess up on my side – and that’s before the special assessments start; also I owe Target a large amount for something I argue was their fault, but I haven’t had the gumption to call them & argue the point…. Long story short, I was going to have to sell that U2 ticket anyway, it just hurts that it goes this way

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} – Healing Energy, holding you in my heart. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  9. 60 heading for upper 60s and more cloudy than not at the moment. Got 15.8 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 130. Holding the Good Thought for 400+ still.

    If I weren’t trying to 1) keep in touch with folks & 2) do RTing as part of my helping and my resisting I would get off twitter. It’s a time suck and so much of what hits even my limited timeline is OMGHOF about stuff that is either “well, duh” or “what if’s” that haven’t happened yet and aren’t really likely to happen – especially if folks get off twitter and get to work on the coming campaigns. sigh.

    I need to do some more offline stuff. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}} and Healing Energy to everybody, shaped to your needs.
