Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Apr. 29th through May 5th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 50 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 73. Sunny skies are in the forecast. After yesterday’s rain cleared, the afternoon turned delightful – sunny and mid-70s; looks like today will be more of the same.

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of the passage of the House bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act – an act of cruelty that would have thrown 24 million people off health care, ended Medicaid as we know it, and cut Medicare funding. It failed to pass in the Republican Senate, not because of the cruelty but because one Senator refused to vote for it because Senate amendments could be stripped in the final bill. So the petty vanity of the Senate with their vaunted view of themselves as the Saucer that Cools the Hot Tea of the House (instead of a bunch of clowns wearing underwear on their heads) – normally a reason to curse – saved us.

I will never EVER forget this photo of old white men laughing after they voted to take my family’s health care coverage away.

Health care is still a potent issue now that insurers are sharing their 2019 rate increases which will reflect the loss of people who, no longer subject to the mandate, will choose to ride out life without insurance. In Virginia, the increase was announced yesterday – 64%. THAT is why so many House Republicans are retiring. When the full extent of the damage to the health insurance market, caused by repeal of the mandate, is known, there will be no place to hide from angry voters. #WeWontForget

    See all y’all later!

  2. Good Saturday Meese

57 degrees here in NY going up to 76.
Have to head out early – to get new eyeglasses – since it looks like I wont have the cataract surgery till the end of August – need new glasses to see a bit better till then. Thankfully I get them free via my union – will lose those benefits at the end of the summer.

    • Naomi Klein has a new book about Puerto Rico and the “disaster capitalists.” I haven’t had a chance to read the article but I tweeted it out for this quote:

Time after humiliating time, Puerto Ricans have been sent that familiar message about their relative worth and ultimate disposability,” author Naomi Klein writes in her new book, The Battle for Paradise: Puerto Rico Takes on the Disaster Capitalists.

“Nothing has done more to confirm this status than the fact than no level of government has seen fit to count the dead in any kind of credible way, as if lost Puerto Rican lives are of so little consequence that there is no need to document their mass extinguishment,” Klein contends.

I am not sure what to think about Klein but to the extent that it gets people talking, it is a good thing.

The Republican who helped create PROMESA is now saying he would like statehood.

U.S. House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee Chairman Rob Bishop said on Friday he supports the government of Puerto Rico’s efforts to introduce bipartisan legislation in Congress to grant full statehood to the U.S. commonwealth territory.

“I am supportive of statehood. I think it is a solution that is long overdue,” Bishop, a Republican from Utah, said during a visit to the island that was broadcast over the internet.

Of course he wants them to first have a vibrant economy – while his party refuses to fix their debt crisis. Words are cheap.

  3. Good Saturday morning, Meese! It’s cloudy here in Ashburn, with a current temp. of 68 F., going up to 75 F. later. As far as I know, we didn’t have thunderstorms during the night, but we did have some rain. It’s supposed to rain again this afternoon.

Had a nightmare about Sarah Huckabee Sanders that woke me at 4 a.m. and got me out of bed at 5. In it, I was taking notes in a classroom full of other students when Sanders demanded to see my notes. I handed them over, even though I’d written a couple of sentences from a future short story in addition to notes on the class lecture subject. She immediately started making stupid criticisms of my writing, so I verbally lambasted her. Then I found myself locked in a room with neither bed nor bucket. Incidentally, does Sanders have a “wandering” eye? I get the impression that one eye looks in one direction and the other at the speaker. If she does, that condition is easily corrected by wearing contact lenses.

We have a busy morning of shopping planned because I need a desk chair and chair mat, as well as sundry other items. We have to rush through our shopping because today is the day of the Kentucky Derby and we want to watch it. (Please Goddess, if there’s rain at Churchill Downs, don’t let any of the horses slip and break their legs so they’ll have to be shot.)

Haven’t looked at the news yet. Keeping up with it is a full-time job nowadays. Every week is like a year. Sigh. No wonder we all feel tired all the time.

Wishing all a peaceful Saturday and here’s wishing for a Triple Crown winner this year!

  4. Good morning, 48 and sunny in Bellingham. The rain interfered with fence building last weekend, so we’ll try again today. RonK’s veggie starts are ready to be planted so I hope they will have a secure place to grow soon! I hope to putter around outside. get a few pots ready to plant, and keep Heide from tracking mud into the house. The guys know to take their shoes off, but Heidi’s paws need to be wiped.

I hope to putter around, clean up a few pots, and start making a planting plan.

    Best Saturday wishes to all.

  5. 1 big thunderstorm yesterday, all gone now. And next week it’ll be in the 90s. Watching Joy Reid’s show. Rudy Giuliani is an idiot. Got laundry going, next week’s food thawing, got to figure out a good workout for later today.

  6. 62 heading for 75 and sunny. Back from weekly shopping – always takes longer when the Farmers Market is open (spend more money too) – LOL – got some candles to replenish my stock. I only “purpose” burn them but there have been a lot of purposes this last winter. sigh. Got some lettuce and a milkweed bedding plant (for the butterflies) and talked to my “strawberry” market vendor. She said the early strawberries were frozen out but the later ones seem to be doing fine. Meanwhile I’ve just finished off my blueberries from last June and will be on grocery store (well, co-op) fruit until the strawberries come in. Market fruit is more expensive than commercial, but as long as I am able I will be buying it. Overcast yesterday lasted until late afternoon but I got just at 9 KWHs and with the 1.9 I’ve already generated today the m-t-d is 32.6 – looking to be a good production day. :)

    Trying to stay away from politics as far as twitter is concerned – RT’ing stuff from Black Kos and Moose but those are issues not the latest OMGHOF about what the Rs are doing. Did have a lovely conversation with my chosen candidate for AR house dist 86 this morning. Early voting starts Monday. I’ll be at the Courthouse bright and early on Tuesday. Be looking into some local volunteer activities as well. And starting to get serious about travel planning for this summer. Starting with the Scott Joplin Festival basket and I will be attending the end of this month! Need to do my pass around the internet. And coffee. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. I don’t thing I can post a picture here, even if I could log in on my phone, but here’s my wardrobe question from FB:
