Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 6th through May 12th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, meese! Friday …

    It is 41 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 43. It is raining now and is expected to rain all day. And tomorrow!

    Today the Trump “Administration” unveils its plan to hold down drug prices – by advancing policies that will raise them! In upside-down world, this is called Making America Gobsmacked Again. Why seniors don’t rise up enmasse and reject the Republican Party is a mystery to me. This goes right to their bottom line.

    I will ignore the rest of the news other than to say “Hey, fragile white people! Just because you got your white nationalist president does not give you the right to call the cops on black students napping, black families barbecuing, and black women golfing too slow. Real America, where racial and cultural diversity is embraced, wants its country back and you are going to be really ticked at what comes next.”

    Speaking of Real America (lol Sarah Palin – sad to be dissed!), I am no John McCain fan – he should have put country over party and caucused with the Democrats – but you would think someone in the Republican Party would be embarrassed about the full-throated attacks on a dying man who toed their line 999 times out of 1000. Orrin Hatch led the hit parade and gave permission to the rest of the deplorables to hope for his quick end. But they lack the shame gene as is evidenced by their choices.

    See all y’all later!

    • Here is what ticked me off yesterday. Brennan is not just a right-wing tool, he is Scott Walker’s right-wing tool. And he will now be deciding matters of the law that will impact me and my family. Curse you Patrick Leahy, curse you and your whiter-than-white state that elects people so comfortable in their privilege that they can’t see – or don’t care about – the damage done by their vanity.

  2. Auntie Maxine:

  3. Good morning, Moosekind, and happy Freya’s Day. It’s gorgeous outside in Ashburn, with a current temp. of 55 F., going up to 79 F. Good day for sitting on the screened porch if I can stay awake!

    Jan, today sounds like a good day to try to shut out the world—rain outside and evil in the statehouse. I wish this long, national nightmare would be over, with Dems in control again.

    Having lunch with a friend today whom I met on dailykos years ago. She lives not five minutes from here in an “over-55” community. She’ll want me to do something political, I’m sure. Yesterday I spoke to a woman from the county elections board, telling her I’d like to be an election officer but only here at the retirement community. (Loudoun is a BIG county, I don’t know it at all well, and no way am I driving all over it in the dark.) She said everyone else told her the same thing! Oh, well.

    Finally secured a place at the Progressives’ Luncheon on May 18, a week from today. We’ll see what that’s like.

    My new 4-port USB hub is supposed to hold four USB thingies. However, when I put the mouse USB in it, I couldn’t control the mouse at all well. I’m not sure why. This is a pain, because I need that USB hub for the external backup hard drive. Without that backup I’m reluctant to do any work on fiction, even if I could find the time.

    We didn’t get much done yesterday, but perhaps today will be different. Wishing all a peaceful, worry-free Friday!

  4. So, the doc yesterday was uneventful. There’s not really anything about the feet — they’re what some women get instead of hot flashes, and from what I’ve read about those, I’ll take this. She wants me to see a gastroenterologist, that will wait till after the trip. Since specialists are a $40 co-pay, it’ll wait till at least the June paycheck.

    I want to say I’m shocked at the WH spokesperson’s atrocious coldness about McCain, but that really isn’t shocking coming from them. They are the cruelest, sickest people, and something about TrunPence’s ascendancy has awakened that in soooo many people. Ok, I’m going to listen to this happy song about the Resistance from Snow Patrol. (They haven’t said that’s what it’s about but listen to, or read the words. It is so much about the Resistance.)

    • {{{ad}}} – glad the doc visit was uneventful and hope your “symptoms” resolve themselves so you are more comfortable soon. You are wise to stay with your music. It is healing on many levels. Healing Energy and moar {{{HUGS}}}

  5. 68 (humidity’s 70%) and heading for 85 – bright and sunny at the moment which I’m very happy with. Hope it stays that way the rest of the day. Only got 15.4 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 152 – still barely possible to get 500 for the month but not likely. sigh. But the sunny is very good for my moods whether or not we make my target for May.

    Ignoring as much as I can of what’s going on politically/governmentally. If there was anything I could do about it besides be sick I most certainly would. Since there’s not I’ll continue to do what I can in other areas – and I can do that better if I’m not sick at my stomach. So I’ll do my twitter RTing, get with the Dems here as soon as I can (they won’t get started until after the primaries), find other ways to help folks online and at home, and try to keep the weeds/invasives in my herb garden in check. (Need to deal with the hanging basket. What I thought was volunteering pansies turned out to be invasive honeysuckle. sigh. But at least there’s only the one.) And coffee. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning, Meesefolk. Hitting the road soon with my car loaded with fluffy costume bits and housewarming gifts for the Kiddo and SIL.

    Their moving plan has expanded a bit since its original conception. They now want to move their bed this weekend and start sleeping at the apartment with their cats. They think it’s likely to be easier on the cats to have them in the new place before the movers show up at the old. It makes sense; their kitties are previously-abused rescues who still have issues despite now being senior cats. It means I’ll be sleeping on a blow up mattress on the floor, or staying at the house…we’ll work it out. I’m sure by Saturday night, I’ll be able to fall asleep anywhere!

    Need to shower and then head out…have a great weekend!

  7. Saturday Meese
    51 and raining here in NY – going up to 52.

    Good news from Bobby:

    Puerto Rico

    • That migration map is pretty impressive. No wonder Rick Scott of Florida is pandering to Puerto Ricans – his state is going to have a lot of ticked off Puerto Rico voters this fall. I hope they don’t fall for his “epiphany”; he will vote with Republicans and continue the paper-towel policies of the Trump “Administration.”

      • The problem is – Republican Puerto Ricans will vote for him.
        Many Puerto Ricans who had money – fled the island and did not have to stay in shelters – they could buy or rent a home. The rich and well off – vote R. Poorer and working class PRs vote D.
        Party affiliation really depends on social class – take a look at the controlling party in their legislature – they are very very white ( race/ethnicity plays a role in class on the island – which does not get talked about much)

  8. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 43 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 55. Rain expected this afternoon.

    After yesterday’s news, I keep wondering if there will ever be a time when someone in the Republican Party says “you can’t do that” to the blatant criminality in the Trump White House. Now we find that Trump had his bag man chasing bribes from AT&T, Ford and Big Pharma!

    Another tRump promise broken – there will be no negotiating drug prices, there will be no help for people deciding between medication and food. Just like the response to the opioid crisis was all words and no action, like Infrastructure Week got kicked down the road so many times it is now in 2019 – the only promises he has kept are the ones to Republican donors and Senate warhawks. Republicans are working to discredit the news because their only chance to stay in power is if people believe te propaganda instead of the facts.

    The Democratic Party Weekly Address is on drug prices and was delivered by Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan. It will be included in the Fighting Back post which I will put together after I finish a few projects.

    See all y’alls later!

    • The lying liar lies about his lies.
      I wonder if any Rs will finally get cojones and stop him?

      • They’re making money off him. They’ll not only not stop him, they’ll support and encourage him as long as they do.

  9. Good morning, Meese. It’s cloudy here with a chance of thunderstorms later. Currently the temperature in Ashburn is 61 F., going up to 89 F. There’s a chance of rain for the whole of next week.

    We’re having trouble with Comcast TV, much to our dismay. I do wish the cable company weren’t a monopoly. I thought monopolies were against the law? My poor husband longs to watch Formula I Qualifying today. Tomorrow we both want to watch the race. It’s going to be a bloody shame if my husband is deprived of one of his few pleasures in life.

    Need to tidy this place today. Dearly has assembled all the furniture we need to assemble for the time being, the latest being the CD/DVD tower and a small clothes hamper for his bathroom.

    I’ve been following some diaries about Avenatti. Now I’d like to get on Twitter and follow him. Have a feeling that something BIG is coming down the pike, but then, we’ve all have those feelings and nothing much happens.

    Wishing a blissful Saturday to all at the Pond!

  10. Up & waiting for Joy Reid’s show. Today: clean out fridge, take out garbage & recycling, take some books to Half Price to sell, and decide what I’m packing for Chicago.

  11. 68 w/ 90% humidity and mostly cloudy. There’s a breeze so it’s still comfortable. I hope the humidity goes down as the temps go up. And the breeze stays with us. It’s more cloudy than not at the moment which I’m not happy about. Got 22.3 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 174.8 – 500 still possible but got to get the average up from where it is.

    potus45 is a liar – always has been, always will be. He’s not just deplorable, he’s despicable – always has been, always will be. But there are no “moderate” Rs to stop him – he’s the cover they need to do the evil stuff they’ve been trying to do for years. Everything the Rs are doing is something they’ve been working on, suggesting, writing and proposing bills for, pushing for since before Bill Clinton was president. Some of it since before Jimmy Carter was president. And they’ve gotten closer and closer to it over the decades. Now they just need the cover of a lying piece of trash in the White House to push it through. Thank goddess for Dems like Nancy Pelosi who’ve been blocking them all these decades – and are at least slowing them down even now.

    Strawberries at the Market today! There are still good things in the world to enjoy. And so I will enjoy them. There are good things to do in the world and I’ll do my best to do them. There are good people in the world doing good and I will do my best to help them.
    (Holding the Good Thought for Bobby – Don Feliberto’s roof is probably starting to go up as I type!) Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  12. Good morning, 53 and sunny in Bellingham today so I hope to be outside soon. We have a mess of our own making on the patios because we decided the teak furniture needed to be restored, and that means sanding, and now everything is covered with dust and pollen. Ronk thinks he has about two more hours of sanding and then we’ll clean it all up again. The umbrellas are really dusty so we have a messy day ahead.

    The newly oiled furniture looks like new again, but it may be time for it to just age gracefully :)

    Best Saturday wishes to all.
