Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 27th through June 2nd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Finally Friday …

It is 64 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 73. A few clouds this morning giving way to sunny skies this afternoon. Back to normal Wisconsin temperatures for the foreseeable future.

I monitor the news during the day via Twitter while I am doing other things and then when I open my news aggregator in the morning, I am reminded about what happened and get a glimpse into the soul of the media by what is featured prominently.

The use of the presidential pardon power to troll libruls is disgusting but will likely not kill anyone unless he releases an axe murderer. The harm has already been done to the presidency – and the Republican Party for presenting Trump as a suitable presidential candidate – so it is just piling up now. It is helpful to serve as a wake-up call to the New York legislature to get the double-jeopardy law fixed so that if (when) Trump starts issuing pardons for indicted friends and former employees, New York law can make sure that the criminals are prosecuted. Right now, they defer to the federal pardon and won’t try them on state charges.

Samantha Bee’s use of the c-word is sad because it made it impossible for anyone to see her brilliant take-down of the Trump Administration’s heartless immigration policy. It is a word I don’t like to see and would never use. There is really no “reclaiming” in play – it was never a word used for anything but expressing hatred of women. That it was used to express hatred of a specific woman who deserves hate doesn’t excuse it. That said, she apologized for using the word and TBS apologized for airing the word (and accepted blame). The right-wing screams of double-standard, trying to equate an insulting word with racism and anti-semitism is ridiculous. Rosanne is a terrible person who spews hatred of people of color and non-Christians, Samantha Bee used an insulting word. NOT the same.

The story that got the least attention and deserves the most (in my mind) is the trade war. The headline this morning in my paper was “Allies threaten retaliation”. Let that sink in – the government is attacking our allies, attacking our closest friend – Canada – in order to give Trump talking points for his re-election campaign. Businesses that can’t ride out the latest flatulence from the Trump administration’s seat-of-their-pants trade policy will close and jobs will be lost. People like Ben Sasse will harumph but will continue to support His President because it will not impact him personally – every Republican Senator and their donors got massive tax cuts to buy their silence. Seeing Justin Trudeau call out our awfulness made me want to cry.

    See all y’all later!

  2. Today’s supposed to be our 1st official 100 degree day. Sad. Eating breakfast, drinking tea. I had to take our label printer apart to get a stuck one out & now I can’t put it back together. Are you sure this isn’t Monday? Here’s Pride (In The Name Of Love) from the night I was there.

    • “Are you sure this isn’t Monday?” – NO! I am not sure what day it is!! All week it was Wednesday (for some reason) then it abruptly became Friday. I am just glad that it appears to be finally over with.

  3. 71 in Sedalia, heading for 94 – we’ll probably do indoor venue stuff as much as possible today. Yesterday was very nice – a bit warmish but not an issue, for me anyway, and basket seemed to be OK with it. Lots of fun music of the Ragtime Era and both sides as it were – where it came from and the many directions it evolved into. I checked my PV dashboard, not only got over 500, made it to 515.5 KWHs which is the best this system has ever done (by 7 KWHs). So. We start a new month and see what we see. 568 is the highest this system has reached in June or any single month actually.

    Almost completely offline during the day. Checking in here, visiting my email & twitter – then again before I go to bed. That’s about it. So basically I don’t know about most of the latest Deplorable stuff. But then I only take a glance at it anyway. Mostly means I’m not RTing much of anything. Which may or may not be making a difference anyway. Holding the Good Thought for Aji & Wings – there’s a wildfire east of them. As of 7 hours ago she tweeted to Nurse Kelley that the fire was far enough east for them to be safe. As long as the wind direction holds. From this fire. No candles to carry this prayer – wish I had flowing water somewhere nearby to carry it. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  4. Good morning, 54 and mostly cloudy in Bellingham. Today will be busy with house and garden tending, but I have help arriving soon. The young man who washed the outside windows last week will do the inside today, and my son will help me with a long list of garden tasks. It’s good to have help, but I hope I can keep up!

    Best wishes to all.

  5. I hope the New York legislature listens and acts quickly.

You can’t let criminals escape because they know – or can rat out – Donald Trump.

  6. Saturday Meese

68 going up to 83 and cloudy. Had thunderstorms last night and the dogs went crazy.

One of the side results if the outrage around the death toll count in PR is all of a sudden we are getting network stories about the conditions – like this one

    • It would be nice if the news media would take a break from the 24/7 outrage porn they are airing and do some real reporting about issues that matter. I am fed up to here with “celebrity x did [fill in the blank]” when people are literally dying and we have real issues that need people’s attention. I enjoy the snark as much as the next person but at some point a better balance between infotainment and information needs to be struck.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 52 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 72. Sunny this morning then clouding up with a chance of rain in the forecast.

An article from Buzzfeed suggests that Trump beats his opponents into submission, using fatigue as his weapon. I haven’t had time to read it but the subhead gave me an aha moment:

Nobody is scared of getting their ass kicked by Donald Trump. But that doesn’t mean he can’t exhaust them into submission.

The speech patterns he uses where he says the same thing over and over again in the space of minutes then contradicts himself then asks rhetorical questions then babbles about something unrelated is difficult to follow but it is like a steady drip drip drip of water torture. The on again off again summits and trade wars and threats and congressional deals and Twitterbleats mean that no one can rest, no one can catch their breath and no one really knows where they stand. I don’t know how we can ignore everything but I am going to start trying to ignore more of it. I am hoping the article has some tips!

I may not be able to get the Fighting Back post done today. I have a busy morning then I will be running errands away from home most of the day. The Democratic Party Weekly Address is about the Republican culture of corruption and the need for accountability – things we will run on this fall. If I can’t post it today, it will be posted tomorrow.

    See all y’all later!

  8. For Diana, iPad notes:
    – I tested the Moose on my iPad using Safari and did not have any problems logging in. However, since I had never logged in from there before, I did not have left over bits of saved passwords or cookies.
    – Make sure you enter the web site as simply “motleymoose.net” (without the quotes), don’t enter the http or www or https. That will guarantee that you get what the Internet chooses for the Moose which should be http.
    – I logged you out of all devices from the administrator console so you will be forced to enter a login.
    – If your login does not work, it may be fighting with a saved password. You can clear the password you have stored for the moose using the Safari settings. I found them in the Settings app, Safari, Passwords. According to my research, you can delete a single password for a web site however I did not test it.

If these do not work, keep track of what happened at each step and I will try to recreate it. If you are challenged that the web site is not secure, that is just a warning. There is no financial or user personal information kept at the Moose so you do not have to worry about your identity being compromised unless you use the same password on all your online logins in which case – DON’T DO THAT!

    Good luck!

    • Thanks Jan! Your directions work for me too! I want to use my iPad more often and now I can.

  9. Here in Sedalia, 76 and raining but only heading for 80 so the “heatwave” broke for the moment. According to the weather widget it broke at home, too, although the rain isn’t expected until late this afternoon. Got 21.7 KWHs yesterday so m-t-d is 21.7 – a good start towards the 568 we got in 2015. LOL

Twitter-rage adrenal exhaustion is why I don’t pay any attention to twittler’s tweets and really pretty much stay off my own TL on Twitter so I’m not dealing with the OMGHOF reactions. He wants the attention. I’m not gonna give it to him. He can’t change policy, issue orders or even executive orders by tweet. It’s all sound designed to generate fury. I don’t expect the Deplorables in any branch or at any level to do anything to stop him – until their bosses (the same small group that owns the media) tell them to. They can’t be shamed and the ones in danger of losing their seats are resigning rather than go against their party (and whatever the bosses are allowing, if not ordered, to happen). So. I worry about Aji – for a host of reasons with the current wildfire as a “cherry on top” right now. Some other folks who need help, whether or not I can help them. Puerto Rico, although about the only thing I can do is boost signals – Denise’s and sometimes Bobby’s. RTing Denise’s twitter roundup on DK when I can. Hold a hand or give a hug when I can. It’s what I can do. Ignore the rest.

    The music festival has been fun. The music is driving – heartbeat pattern speeded up to the extent somebody’d call 911 if it were a real heartbeat ❤ – and sets fingers and toes tapping. I’m running short on sleep (and I hope basket is still asleep) because we talked til after midnight but I still woke up at my usual times. Ah routine. Anyway, we’ll be having breakfast and checking out shortly. There are 2 events this morning and the afternoon concert, then we’ll head for Fayetteville. It would be nice to see the final concert but basket’s plane home leaves tomorrow evening and he doesn’t need to be driving from here to Fayetteville then immediately drive to KCI so it’s my home tonight and hopefully get a good night’s sleep. Then he can leave right after lunch for KCI. Not sure when/if I’ll be back online today. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  10. Up eating breakfast & watching local news. Definitely an indoors day today, with 100 degrees expected. There’s a drawing for tickets to U2 at the Apollo, I’m going to enter — but it’s a random drawing so there’s no way to know. Today’s song is CoBL from the Omaha show, I picked it because there’s a great shot of Adam.

Glad Joy Reid is going to be on her show this weekend. She must be really scaring the deplorables for them to be going through her 20 year old stuff. I bet my writing from 20 years ago probably has some less than gracious stuff in it. Growth is a good thing, I hope I’m a better person now than I was.

  11. Good morning, 57 and cloudy in Bellingham. As I was sleepily gazing out the pantry window this morning, waiting for my coffee to brew, a young doe with a tiny spotted fawn walked through the garden. They were very cautious, and I just quietly watched. I’m making progress with finding a peaceful interaction!

    Best wishes to all.
