Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 10th through June 16th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

    Friday Meese

61 going up to 75 here in Saugerties NY.

Am despairing about Puerto Rico – again – this morning. It isn’t just Trump and Republicans – too many people just don’t give a damn. I just took my morning shower – and didn’t have to worry about breaking out in a rash. :(

Horrible, horrible, and no end in sight. No help from the evil criminals in office.

    Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 66 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 88. Storms are moving through the area as we “speak” and will be ushering in a hot spell – temperatures will be in the 90s over the weekend and into Monday.

The big battle in Congress right now is over immigration. Democrats would like to get a clean DACA bill and House Republicans see their chance to get them to vote for their right-wing immigrant bashing by including the family separation issue in with it. Craven coward and, in a fair world, excommunicated-Catholic Paul Ryan says that “separating families is wrong” but claims his hands are tied – he must continue carrying water for the vulgar talking yam and his white nationalist base. January 2019 cannot come too soon for me.

Not to lose track of or be surprised by: Sessions cites Bible passage used to defend slavery in defense of separating immigrant families:

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday used a Bible verse to defend his department’s policy of prosecuting everyone who crosses the border from Mexico, suggesting that God supports the government in separating immigrant parents from their children.

“I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained the government for his purposes,” Sessions said. […]

John Fea, a professor of American history at Messiah College in Pennsylvania said, “in the 1840s and 1850s, Romans 13 is invoked by defenders of the South or defenders of slavery to ward off abolitionists who believed that slavery is wrong. I mean, this is the same argument that Southern slaveholders and the advocates of a Southern way of life made.”

There is the central theme in the Republican Party right now – a return to the good old days when the bible gave them permission to discriminate against people of color and women. Deplorable.

By the way, the FBI IG report is a shiny bauble dangled in front of the media who would like nothing better to go 24/7 on Hillary’s email server again while the country descends deeper into dystopia. I hope people can pivot back to immigration. The Trump “Justice” Department is trying to get a federal judge in Texas to declare DACA illegal so that deportations can begin immediately. That will set up a court battle that could go to the Supreme Court and we know how that will end up.

I have a stack of deferred projects on my desk that – literally – threatens to tip over on me and I have to get to them. Or I can find an excuse to push everything to the weekend which would mess up my weekend. Decisions!!

    See all y’all later!

Another morning where it barely got below 80. It’s not supposed to be this blechy till August. Maybe today will be a good day for justice, with Manafort’s bail maybe getting revoked.

Good Freya’s Day morning, Moosekind. It’s a lovely day, with a current temp. of 62 F. in Ashburn, going up to 82 F.

Had the night from hell last night. Couldn’t sleep for thinking of the nursing infant ripped from her mother and when the mother screamed in anguish, the Gestapo handcuffed her. Also tried not to think about the murder of newborns in the delivery room in the name of population control in China. Having a very hard time getting that out of my mind. Going to be dragging all day from the lack of sleep.

We have to leave our flat at 1 p.m. today so the professional cleaner can clean the carpet. We’ll probably put the dog in day care and do errands in our old neighborhood.

Hope something breaks in our favor today re the Mueller investigation. I’ll probably lurch through the day and fall into an exhausted sleep at some point. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

I hope you catch up on your sleep! Good luck with the carpet cleaning – I know it has been a MAJOR source of annoyance.

And yes – Mueller Time, please? I would like to see Manafort have his bail revoked. Did you see that Bernie Sanders revealed that he did not know that millions of people – some of whom are very likely innocent of any crime – are in jail simply because they can’t make bail? JHC, how can someone be alive that long – and in a public service job – and be so clueless about civil rights and injustice? I suspect that it is because he is not in public service but just in service to himself.

      {{{Diana}}} – Healing Energy – and, well, we do what we can. We have to know & acknowledge the evil to deal with it – but we can’t dwell on it or we will become so upset we won’t be able to do the few things we can do to help. moar {{{HUGS}}}

Hi Meeses, I’m back. After “smugly and smugly” assured this old woman that “chargers are supposed to heat up” they tested mine – and ordered a replacement. Covered their little (very polite) sexist butts by saying it was “just a precaution” – no acknowledgements that the old woman was correct – but they did it. 74 with 89% humidity heading for 90 or so. Got 21 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 263 – 600 is still possible but as unlikely as it was on the 1st. 😁

    I think I’m glad I was offline for most of 3 days. The news gets more and more toxic. I will continue to do what I can – which right now is mostly RT stuff and send a sawbuck here or there. I don’t need the total abject despair that paying close attention to what the Evil Ones are doing would bring me. That would keep me from doing what I can – and hunting for more things to do. Gonna log off in a minute and take a walk before it gets any warmer. I’ll get back online and see about more RTing when I get back. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

Good morning, 56 and partly sunny in Bellingham. I’m going to the pool soon and I hope the exercise will clear my foggy brain. My family time was all good, but so many real life issues with my kids and grand kids were discussed it was exhausting. I’m grateful they trust me to listen and want my advice, but this was intense!

    Best wishes to all.

Thanks, Dee! Why is FEMA so politicized? It was lousy under Dubya too. Thank Goddess some people with clout are finally investigating! I have my eye on Kamala Harris. Would like to vote for her in 2020 for POTUS.

Hope your poor hubby will feel better soon! These summer illnesses are awful.

{{{Diana}}} FEMA is under the Executive office. It’s unfortunately always politicized. It’s done superb work under Bill Clinton and Barack Obama – it’s done deplorable work under Bush I & II and Deplorable work under twitler.

    Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 70 degrees in Madison (at 5am) with an expected daytime high of 90 – heat index 108! Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. We had thunderstorms and about 2 inches of rain between 11:00pm and 12:30am and a flash flood alert was issued. There was a lot of hail with it also and it made me grateful that I park my car in a garage.

Manafort was sent to jail and Giuliani announced that tRump will be pardoning anyone caught up in the Mueller probe. That sounds like a promise to people that if they shut up, the “president” will take care of them. Perhaps Mueller needs to investigate Giuliani for witness tampering. I would take great pleasure in seeing him indicted – he has been the (very gross!) face of corrupt officialdom over the past two decades.

I spent a lot of time in my car yesterday and my NPR station did some long segments on the family separation issue. Excellent coverage – it almost seemed like NPR was finally getting some courage because they actually called out the lies and misinformation about the administration’s description of the program! It sounds like the white evangelicals who make up tRump’s base might be having a difficult time with this one. The Catholics have been on board for a while, based on the tweets of the Jesuits and activist nuns I follow on Twitter, but those who benefit from having a “protector” of christianity in the White House are being forced to confront their outright dereliction of duty.

Matt Yglesias has been on fire on Twitter about the soulless Republican Party hacks.

Responding to a tweet by ahole Paul Ryan about “dad jokes”.

    #lol indeed :(

This week’s Democratic Party Weekly Address is about the Republican’s plan to repeal protections for pre-existing conditions. Yes, that was in this news cycle, believe it or not! It is important to note that the pre-existing conditions rules protect people with employer-based insurance as well. Any employer voting for Republicans is an idiot – their premiums to cover their employees are going to skyrocket.

    See all y’all later!

Catholics have been speaking out against the tearing up of families – even some of the more conservative clerics. I hate to sound cynical – however one look at the congregational demographics will point to the Church need to defend Latinos

I had to mute Beto O’Rourke on All In last night, he had been talking to parents at one of the centers…. it just tore my heart to pieces. He’s leading a march tomorrow to one near El Paso.

They’re going to put kids in tents!? In Texas!!? It barely gets below 80 at night, it’s near 100 most days, and with the heat index…. That’s completely inhumane. This is insult to the already traumatized.

Nancy Pelosi in her weekly presser had a lot to say about family separation. And this!

I just don’t even know why there aren’t uprisings all over the country, and maybe there will be, when people realize that this is a policy that [the Trump Administration] defends.

I hope we can see some uprisings.

Good morning, Moosekind! We are enjoying a spell of delightful June weather. It’s another John Greenleaf Whittier day (“Oh, what’s so rare as a day in June? Then, if ever, come perfect days“). The temperature in Ashburn is 55 F., going up to 86 F.

This morning is the Father’s Day FIshing Tournament. The family are coming over to catch fish in Fisherman’s Pond. I noticed when I walked by on Thursday with Monty that workers were cleaning the pond, and yesterday we saw marquees going up. Hot dogs and snacks will be served. I’ve laid in a supply of organic apple juice and berry-flavored organic yogurt drink for the grandchildren. (Elder son reads the labels on food packages for 5 minutes before he ever buys anything, so Mr. Toddler is living an organic childhood.)

After dinner we’re going to a showing of “The Post” in the Great Oak theater a few yards away across the parking lot. One really nice thing about living here is the Saturday night movies: they show the ones we’ve missed.

I’m looking forward to seeing the family. Yesterday was a good day because we carried five boxes to the storage unit—they’d been sitting in the hallway, most unsightly—Dearly Beloved put together a small hallway entrance table, and the delightful man who works for General Services here cleaned the carpet. So far…crossing fingers and imploring Hestia…I don’t smell anything.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and beyond!

We’ll have spotty showers all weekend — hey, it’ll keep the highs below 100. I had fallen back asleep when the alarm went off, incorporated the music into a dream. Even when I was up & walking around, it took a few minutes to be sure where I really was. Today: groceries. Pretty much it. I’ll listen for rain & move some of my plants out to get free water.

82 with 64% humidity heading for 90 or so. Heaven knows what the heat index will be. Sun’s shining brightly which is good for electricity generation. (Aji’s got rain! W00T!) Yesterday got 20.9 KWHs and the m-t-d is 285.5 at the moment, with this morning’s driblet. I’m still managing to not have the A/C on. The only time it bothers me is when I’ve been inside an air conditioned building for longer than 5 minutes and then again in the evening just before sundown when the day’s at its hottest and stickiest. As long as the temps keep dropping once the sun goes down, I’m good. Sleeping better than I have in years.

News is deplorable. Worse than deplorable. About the only “good” I can sort of make myself see is just how public America’s exceptional Deplorability is right now. All the white journalists and congresscritters bleating “this is not who we are” getting the “YES, IT IS” in their faces from Natives and POV who’ve been suffering this evil for half a millennia or more – maybe it will sink in. Because yes, it is who we are and have been. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. It’s not who we have the potential to become. Once we’ve accepted the reality of where we’re starting from. But that “good” – if it is good – is good for the future. Right now kids are being torn from their parents. And while there are stories about what’s happening to the boys, very little is being reported about what’s happening to the girls. And the babies. My fear is child-sex rings and secret mass graves. I hope I’m wrong. But that is who we’ve been and apparently still are. So I pray. Get sick. Pray some more. RT stuff & hope to Goddess it helps. Pray some more.

    I need to do some more errands before it gets any hotter. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

Good morning, 64 and sunny in Bellingham. RonK, our sons, and Ava are tending to their Whatcom Land Trust commitments today and I’m headed to the garden. I was awake in the night with tRump angst, so I hope the healing power of nature will help me find my balance, yet again.

    Best wishes to all.
