Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 8th through July 14th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, 63 and sunny in Bellingham. The sun shining on my old maple trees is a restful sight to see this morning. Everyone is still sleeping so it’s a peaceful moment before another busy day. Our daughter and her family will be collecting belongings and packing up to return to their home later today and then the house will really be quiet.

    Time to find some coffee and check the news. Take care everyone.

  2. Glad to see some village people and thanks for all the links and information.

  3. for any night time visitors

  4. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 72 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 81. Unstable air will create a chance of thunderstorms over the next 3 days and then things will cool down into the 70s. Thank goodness!

    Russia is complaining that the timing of Mueller dropping his indictment of 12 Russian GRU agents was to “wreck” the Trump-Putin summit. I hope so! It would be nice to think that Mueller is paying attention to current events and realizes that Trump is on a dangerous path and needs to be reined in. Of course, if he is counting on Congressional Republicans to do anything, he will be disappointed. Trump knows that he can do whatever he wants as long as he has 80% approval among Republicans – destroying our election system by colluding with the Russians is just a continuation of the damage Republicans have been doing to the franchise for the past 20 years. There are no “wiser heads” to prevail, just Stern Words from John McCain and Jeff Flake about American sovereignty. :::yawn:::

    See all y’all later!

  5. Saturday Meese
    67 here in Saugerties NY going up to 91 with rain and thunderstorms.

    Though the FEMA failures in Puerto Rico report is getting a little play on twitter – it seems that no one is addressing the ongoing failures and the fact that we are now in hurricane season.

  6. Good morning, Moosekind! It’s a lovely morning here in Ashburn, with a current temp. of 65 F., going up to 91 F. Got to get dressed and join the others for the carpool to NRA headquarters in Fairfax. We’re going to hold up signs in front of their building.

    When I see Mueller’s stern, handsome face in the news I wonder if the Rethugs shake in their tiny Armani shoes. He’s coming for them. Wonder if they’re fortifying their cellars and buying gold Maple Leaf coins.

    This morning the WaPo op-ed page is showing a cartoon of two children in a cage. One of them says, “I wish we were in a cave.”

    Dear Goddess, look what this country has come to. We’re now just as much of a third-world country as our neighbor to the south. There’s a huge division between rich and poor. If I think about it much more I’m going to get depressed, so I’d better go.

    Wishing all a good day at the Pond.

  7. Slept in, fitfully but at least on Saturday I can keep rolling over & try again. Watching Le Tour. Tomorrow there’s 15 sections of cobblestones, I wonder if the boy from Houston with the broken shoulder blade will ride. Today: groceries & some cooking for next week.

  8. Depending on which widget, it’s either 73 or 78 and the humidity is either 85% or 90% – going up to 90, heat index likely to hit 3 digits. Got 19.5 KWHs yesterday (m-t-d is 213.4) so not as good as I’d like but not bad. From 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm I turned on the A/C yesterday – cool the house down just enough to allow Nature to take over by bedtime. Need to shift that back to 6-8 as the house hadn’t “equalized” by the time I usually go to bed. Got visited by 4 young raccoons last night – peeking through the door to see what was going on. Just curious (or thirsty) I guess as between the 4 of them they still didn’t finish off the cat food I put out for actual cats but did play in the big water dish.

    Twitter is in overdrive again so I’m spending less time on it. That’s an issue as RTing stuff is pretty much my “resistance” these days. I did talk to some of the local Dem candidates at the Market this morning. Looks like – maybe – we might get the County Judgeship back and that would be a very good thing! I’ve worked with the guy who’s running back when I was on the Court and I know he’ll do a good job for the county. My local statehouse candidates are both solid and both likely to win. Holding the good thought we can pick up some Dems in other parts of the state and break the R stranglehold on the Legislature. We’ve got a chance. Heck, there’s even a very slight chance we could pick up a federal slot – just not in NW AR. Holding the Good Thought on all of the above. I’ve never put much faith in “Blue Wave” but if we can get enough Dems in office to protect the franchise we’ll have turned the tide and be on our way out of this gawdawful mess.

    Blood bank didn’t let me donate yesterday. sigh. Face is still swollen and red. Not as itchy or weepy since I put some Domeboro compresses on last night. (Hard to do compresses on your face!) Still have some issues around my eyes but there’s just about nothing that can be done on that – getting any kind of treatment for skin stuff into one’s eyes is a very bad idea. Meanwhile, need to finish closing up the house and get some coffee. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • have you tried one of those “soothing, cooling” face masks – like the Yes To line of stuff, they are made from natural ingredients, like cucumbers & carrots, one of them might help? Sending comforting, cooling thoughts

      • {{{ad}}} – not recently. But most stuff, even with natural ingredients, gives me a rash – it’s the unnatural ingredients they mix in with them. 😁 I used to have a cloth-covered facial “ice pack” – sort of like a blue mask as it had eyeholes – that worked a treat but I haven’t a clue what happened to it. sigh. Thank you. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  9. Good morning, 62 and sunny in Bellingham. I’ve got no agenda for my day, which is welcome but oddly unsettling as well. I’ve been in entertaining mode since early June so now what do I do! Fortunately I’ve got lots of choices.

    Best wishes to all on this sunny Saturday.
