Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Sept. 30th through Oct. 6th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Morning Meese. 68 with 100% humidity but mostly sunny at the moment – mostly – and heading for low 80s. We’ve got that kind of forecast for the next 3 days anyway. Got 11.5 KWHs for the 1st day of October. A relatively good start after all. Relatively. 😁

    Things seem to have resolved themselves sort of at “work” – the young man who’s been gaming the system left a letter of resignation effective 10/15/18 on the Chair’s desk yesterday. They’ll post the job for 30 days so I’ll probably be helping out a few days a week for the time between him leaving and the new hire. This is probably the best outcome for all concerned. He can get another job in the private sector without his university work history following him, the faculty & especially staff can get someone in who will do the job and reduce the stress on everybody. One small win in the scheme of things, but a win is a win. And maybe a good omen for the rest of the year.

    Meanwhile, I need some coffee. Healing Energy to everybody shaped to your need. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • That is good news; even better that they have you willing and able to help out until a new, competent hire is in place.

      • 😁😁😁 I’ve never been able to let go of a workplace until it’s at least in as good a shape to go forward as it was when I was there. I’ve checked back at places I’d left years earlier to see how they were doing, finally letting go of worrying about them when they got that “good as I was or better” person in. In this case it’s not for the person in my place – she’s very competent – but the person in hers. But it’s a 2-person office. It won’t “flow” until it’s got 2 good people who can work together in it. Which will be when I can let it go. 😂😂😂

  2. Good morning, Meesefolk; 59 when I got up [late] this morning, with another grey, foggy day and a high of 63. I want to get out in the yard for awhile today, but the rain didn’t stop until very early this morning, so I’m not sure how much I’ll accomplish before I decide being soaked is not worth it.

    The Kiddo informs me that the appraisal should be ready tomorrow; in the meantime, she’s continuing her deep dig on the history of the house. The elusive microfiche is still elusive. The Ohio Historical Society told her that while they have some of the records for the defunct newspaper, the earliest years had been held by the Columbus Dispatch…which told her that they no longer have it but think it may have been held by their previous owners, something-something newspaper group which no longer exists but was bought by a large media conglomerate based in NYC. So, she’s contacted the NYC company to see if they have archives from the various newspapers and news groups they’ve purchased over the years. She’s not particularly hopeful at this point, but the microfiche was known to have been viewed in 1992, so there’s a smidgen of hope to cling to. At this point, I’m mostly amused to watch The Kiddo at work. She’s like a terrier who won’t let go when she’s on a mission; it was highly annoying when we were raising her, but her persistence is admirable when it’s not directed at my parenting decisions.

    I still can’t figure out what the FBI is allowed/not allowed to investigate re Kavanope. According to a retired FBI agent who appeared on Rachel last night, without written authorization from the WH, their hands are tied. It doesn’t appear 45* knows that or maybe his staff is keeping him in the dark. So public confusion continues; let’s hope that it’s more clear on the inside.

    It’s an apple crisp sort of day, so I’m off to do some baking before I head outside.

  3. Partly cloud here in Costa Mesa with a temperature of 77. I’m at the edge of Hurricane Rosa. There a good chance of rain listed for tommorow. Southern California really could use it.

    • Hope you get the rain – & that the cell holds together long enough to bring some water to AZ and then NM as well. Gifts/riches only the Heavens can give. 🙏🙏🙏🌧🌧🌧

  4. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 57 degrees today with an expected daytime high of 79. Mostly cloudy skies during the day and then the storms will arrive late evening into the overnight. Tomorrow, the high will be 57. Someone said we will see an impact from Hurricane Rosa – we don’t need the rain so I hope it stays away.

    I was flicking through Twitter when the story about tRump’s woman-hate rally in Mississippi started breaking. He wants to gin up a war between men and women because his base is non-college-educated white men – 65% of whom are butthurt that Brett Kavanaugh being involved in gang rapes, bar fights, blackout drinking, gambling and dick-waving somehow disqualifies him from being on the highest court in the land – the court of last appeal and a co-equal branch of government. Dr. Ford did not deserve that treatment, we don’t deserve that treatment and the people who voted that orange vomitsack into office – and who cover for him now – should be shunned forever.

    I am going to take myself offline and find a project to immerse myself into. I received my Rebecca Traister book yesterday “Good and Mad: The Revolutionary Power of Women’s Anger” but this might not be the best time to read it. I will wait until Kavanaugh withdraws (and enjoy the power) or is confirmed (and plan the next fight) before I crack it open.

    See all y’all later

    • I have Rage Becomes Her by Soraya Chemaly on my Nook and haven’t yet opened it for similar reasons. Also lack of time, which makes it difficult to find a direction for my rage. Voting just doesn’t seem like quite enough…

      • Voting does not seem like enough but it is really the only thing we can do right now. I have a rage right now that has no outlet and when our blue wave sweeps the Ryan House away, we still have to deal with the worry about the damage that the lame-duck Congress will attempt. Until Nancy Pelosi grabs that gavel on January 2nd, I will be holding my breath.

  5. Wednesday Meese.

    60 degrees here in NYS going up to 70. We had horrid thunderstorms last night – but missed the tornadoes – thankfully.

    Today is right-eye surgery day! Yay!

  6. I’m doing all the things the articles say to do for a chest cold. Except, of course, sleep — though thanks to the Nyquil, I am sleeping slightly better than usual, 6 hours straight last night. Liquids, that ginger/lemon/honey drink… I’m following all the advice. I guess it just takes time. Trump mocking Dr. Ford is par for the course for him but still turns my stomach. I hope all survivors of sexual violence know that the majority of people support them. Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way. Be safe, be brave.

    • {{{ad}}} – it does take time. sigh. Sending you more Healing Energy for you to shape to your need. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good Woden’s Day morning, Moosekind! It’s a fair morning here, which makes a nice change. The temperature in Ashburn is 63 F., going up to 79 F. today. As usual, there’s lots to do.

    When I notified our niece in Kent that we’re coming over to London on Sunday, she told me that her mother, our sister-in-law, fell when she was getting out of bed 10 days ago and is now in the hospital with broken ribs. This morning our nephew, the brother of Kent niece, told us their brother has had a knee operation. So it looks as if 30 percent of the UK branch is out of action.

    Meanwhile, back here in Virginia, my poor daughter is overwhelmed by the task of sorting out a very large house and staging it for sale. Although the house has been well kept, the furnishings are very dated, so she’s trying to give it a more modern appearance. The realtor is helping her. My daughter has bought and sold so many houses in the last 20 years that she’s quite an expert now. She bakes chocolate chip cookies just before showings so the aroma lingers. I never thought of doing that!

    If we weren’t busy getting ready to leave, I’d help her. We’ll be gone only a week, so I’ll help when we return. Tonight I have to go to Younger Son’s house so I can get the children off in the morning. He has to drive DIL to the outpatient facility 12 miles away and stay with her to drive her home.

    And then, of course, there are all the goings-on in politics. Don’t know what to say about Thing’s revolting behavior except that I hope to see him doing the perp walk in handcuffs some day, along with McTurtle, Graham, and Lyin’ Ryan. What a sad mess this country is!

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. Are we all here? Mueller? Mueller?

  8. Checking in from Fay., AR – 69 at 100% humidity, hazy but clearing off, and heading for the mid 80s. I may have to get my shorts back out if this keeps up. Got over 11 KWHs again yesterday (Yay!), m-t-d is 23 so we’re on track to reach 300. Early days yet. Everything is in “wait” mode. Or I guess preparation mode. Whether it’s friends’ preparation for surgeries (or recovering from them), waiting for people at Dem HQ, waiting to go back to work until the new hire comes in, waiting for the election – everything is waiting on something. And we’ve got so very much that needs untangling, cleaning up, Healing. Boosting signals and Channeling Healing Energy doesn’t feel like enough but it’s what I can do so…Waiting is always hard. I probably need more coffee. Healing Energy to everybody shaped to your need. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  9. Good morning meese from Folsom (not the prison!) where it’s 63 with a projected high of 78. Cloudy and overcast with rain in the forecast for Thursday but I’ll believe it when I see it.

    Have an appointment and then off to work for a hopefully more productive day than yesterday.

  10. Good morning, 40 and partly sunny in Bellingham. The squirrel nests in the roof are gone now and the holes are covered with metal flashing. The roof is steep so I’m very relieved it was safely accomplished. Our son made careful plans but I was still concerned.

    Fall housekeeping is underway now. With Sue’s ( my 2 times a month housekeeper) help the guest beds have flannel sheets, the laundry is done, and most of the silver is polished. It’s early but most or all of our family will be here for Thanksgiving and given the reality of my knees I need to do as much ahead of time as possible.

    I’m going to work in the basement today, cleaning up the mess from our cabinet redo. There is still some painting to finish, a set of shelves to make and install, and a counter top decision will need to happen. But all of that will be easier with more work space. The existing counter is rough old wood and can be painted, but it may be better to install a new wood surface over the old. I always try to leave as much of the original components of the house as I can so either solution will work.

    Take care everyone.

  11. Good morning, Meesefolk; 54 when I got up with a grey, but not rainy, high of 72 today. I hope we get some sun in the next few days to dry things out a bit; yesterday’s weeding was a breeze, but even in my Wellies, I was soaked within 45 minutes.

    All systems are go on The Kiddo’s house; the appraisal came in yesterday $20K higher than the selling price and with confirmation that they are NOT in a flood zone. The title is clear and ready to go, so all that’s left is the formal approval of their loan, which given the strength of their preapproval and the appraisal, should be a no-brainer. I celebrated by ordering the vintage fabric for the DR curtains; Kiddo is celebrating by researching woodland gardening. I’m astonished, frankly; growing up she showed very little interest in gardening and even with their previous house, she was ambivalent. I think the lure here might be the prospect of aiding in the creation/preservation of a true woodland ecosystem. When she was little, I’d drag her on woodland walks in the spring so she could see trillium and jack-in-the-pulpit, etc “in the wild” , and she does have fond memories of those walks. So we’ll see what happens; I don’t think she yet realizes what a task she’s setting for herself, but I’m certainly not going to discourage her in any way.

    I’ve decided not to watch the Jackhole-in-Chief mocking Dr. Blasey Ford; my rage-meter is already in the red zone, and I’m sure watching him or his deluded followers would peg me out. What I will be watching is how the so-called “concerned” Republican (and Democratic) senators vote. I have no particular reason to believe that they’re doing anything beyond posturing, but there’s a part of me that still hopes.

  12. Important piece:
    The Cruelty is the Point

    [The NMAAH] has a photo of the lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in Indiana in 1930, where a white man can be seen grinning at the camera as he tenderly holds the hand of his wife or girlfriend.

    It is not just that they enjoy this cruelty, it is that they enjoy it with each other. Their shared laughter at the suffering of others is an adhesive that binds them to each other, and to Trump.

    This isn’t incoherent. It reflects a clear principle: Only the president and his allies, his supporters, and their anointed are entitled to the rights and protections of the law, and if necessary, immunity from it. The rest of us are entitled only to cruelty, by their whim. This is how the powerful have ever kept the powerless divided and in their place, and enriched themselves in the process.

    Once malice is embraced as a virtue, it is impossible to contain.

  13. We’re cloudy here in Costa Mesa and at home in Mission Viejo ; it may rain tonite (I hope). Temperature is 70. I just joined a new state wide committee for the new library software all of the 114 community college libraries will be using. I’m trying to catch up on reading the background material.

  14. Good morning, meese! Thursday …

    It is 54 degrees in Madison with and expected daytime high of :::drumroll::: 54! Sunny skies are in the forecast. The storms stayed north, as expected, and I got an uninterrupted night’s sleep.

    The FBI “investigation” has concluded and now the FBI has both political parties questioning its integrity by their pretending that they were not directed in what they can interview. Perjury is off the table, lying about drinking and parties is off the table. The Senate set up the cloture vote and will vote on that on Friday, starting the 30 hours of debate and a confirmation vote on Saturday. Jeff Flake got his fig leaf and can walk away from Trump’s disgusting performance at the Mississippi rally by saying that it has nothing to do with Kavanaugh, it is just a terrible man saying terrible things and Brett Kavanaugh’s judicial demeanor and honesty have no bearing on his right to a seat on the Supreme Court. So Republicans will destroy the court – and in the process destroy their party – but get the reliable anti-Roe, anti-union, anti-regulation, anti-civil rights, pro-executive power vote they want. A pox on their houses.

    I have one more missed project deadline to clean up after and then I can pivot to October work which I am already four days behind on! I am not sure yet if I will check the morning news – it worked pretty well giving it a pass and catching up by flipping through Twitter later in the day. Turns out that the news does not come at you as fast if you don’t have it aimed straight at your face from a firehose. Whodathunk! :)

    See all y’all later!

  15. Thursday Meese

    55 and foggy here in Saugerties NY going up to 73 and rain.
    Headed to post-op appointment at 8AM.

    Surgery went fine – though my nerves were wracked since the man in front of me – whose op should have taken 10 minutes was in for over an hour. I was scheduled for around noon – didn’t have op till after 2PM.

    Still blurry in right eye – it will take a few days to adjust and about a month for healing.
    Thanks for all your healing thoughts!

    • I am glad to hear that the surgery went well! I am sure you are relieved to have that behind you.

    • {{{Denise}}} so glad the surgery went well. Channeling more Healing Energy. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  16. Good morning, Meesefolk; 70 this morning with an expected “high” of 59 by noon. Up-is-down world is even impacting the weather! Heading out early to get my car to the shop before work, a prospect I dread. My descriptions of what’s wrong are always creatively-accurate (“it’s a crunchy-grindy noise, but not metallic; more bubbly than that”) but not at all technical. At least I’ve finally found a place that doesn’t patronize or take advantage of me for my choice to leave the mechanical knowledge to experts.

    I dread today’s news and the likely embrace of the FBI Farce Report. It may be time to download a cozy mystery and immerse myself in that, because my stomach is already in rebellion at the thought of smarmy, old, white men crying, “Vindicated!”

    • Ha! Great description of your car’s noise! I am always relieved when there is external validation of the problem I am reporting such as fluid leaks because trying to describe what is happening in a way that the technician “gets it” is always a challenge. Good luck!

  17. Last night I watched Dr Who instead of the news. If you’re familiar with the series, it’s the one there he & Amy go visit Vincent Van Gogh. It’s lovely & wacky (because Dr Who is just inherently wacky). It has this gorgeous scene, with one of my favorite quotes in the whole series:

    Van Gogh: Hold my hand, Doctor. Try to see what I see. We’re so lucky we’re still alive to see this beautiful world. Look at the sky. It’s not dark and black and without character. The black is in fact deep blue. And over there! Lights are blue. And blue in through the blueness, and the blackness, the winds swirling through the air… and then shining. Burning, bursting through! The stars, can you see how they roll their light? Everywhere we look, complex magic of nature blazes before our eyes.

    I’ve seen this episode many times, and it always leaves me sobbing. Despite having the days with the Doctor & Amy, finding out that his art will be appreciated… things turn out the same for Vincent. I want it to have turned out differently. So today’s song is the happy, optimistic Heal Me from Snow Patrol. Lyrics.

    • I’ve never seen the Dr. Who episode, but Van Gogh is my favorite painter. He’s always helped me see the world as exploding with wonder…a good reminder for today. Thank you.

    • Thanks for the quote anotherdem. I’ll remember it when I finally sew the Dr Who pillow shams I started last year. The Exploding Tardis fabric, and the episode you like, is my grand daughter’s favorite.

  18. Good morning, Moosekind! Here in Ashburn it’s gloriously sunny and warm with a clear blue sky—62 F. at 10 a.m., going up to 85 F. later. We may get thunderstorms, who knows?

    This morning I woke up in Younger Son’s house, after a fitful sleep in Miss Pink Cheeks’ rock-hard bed (she was sleeping in a junior bed on the other side of the room). When we left the house to put her on the school bus and take Mr. Preschooler to his day care, it was like Brigadoon! The fog was so thick I had to turn my headlights on and this situation prevailed until I crossed from Fairfax County to Loudoun County, where we live now. Haven’t seen such fog in ages.

    It was nice spending some time with Younger Son, DIL, and the kids. After her outpatient procedure is done, they’ll be home the rest of the day, so my son plans to make an apple tart. Nice way to spend a fall day!

    Feeling aghast at the news, particularly since there’s not a single thing I can do about it. I read that the crowds outside the Supreme Court last night were huge. Today I have some chores to do, plus afternoon meetings today and tomorrow.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. Perhaps we’ll get a nice surprise, but let’s not count on it.

  19. Stopped by early to see if Denise has checked in, which of course she had, then took my friend to work so I could have the car. I’m having coffee with a friend this afternoon which is always nice. 73 with 99% humidity at the moment heading for 82. Yesterday got 12.5 KWHs for the day and 35.9 m-t-d but today is so overcast the system just came out of night mode. We shall see what we shall see.

    I have no idea whether or not we will manage to keep our country from falling into full-fledged fascism – especially considering how close we are – and what combination of other countries it would take to force us back out of it if we did/do. I do what I can, from voting to Channeling Healing Energy, and know that no matter how far down we go, eventually we will come up again. That’s a rope to cling to and cling I do because I also know the further down we go and the longer we stay there the more people who will be hurt and killed. So holding everyone in The Light, Channeling Healing Energy, and sending Love. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  20. Good morning meese. 61 with high of 70. It drizzled as I was leaving work yesterday and then rained somewhat more intensely in the night. There should be a bit of rain in the forecast still for today.

    Trying to catch up on a bit more sleep before getting started today.
