Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Jan. 13th through Jan. 19th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 25 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 30. Partly cloudy skies, and a slight possibility of snow flurries, is the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

    p.s. The WordPress 5.0.3 upgrade was NOT done on Saturday – I ran out of time. Maybe next weekend.

  2. Good Sunday morning, Meese, although the sun is nowhere in evidence. It’s still dark and still snowing. When I took Monty out for a business meeting in the courtyard just before six, it was still snowing. There must be four inches on the ground, which is a lot for snow-averse Washington, DC. The current temp. in Ashburn is 28 F., going up to 30 F. The snow is expected to last until noon.

    Another rotten night because of gastric reflux. The thrills of being old! ‘Nuff said.

    Hoping for another day of laundry, letter-writing, and working on the book. Wishing all at the Pond a nice, quiet Sunday.

  4. I had a really bad night’s sleep last night — woke up about every hour or so. Skipping workout. Watching the news & slowly eating breakfast, I don’t know what was/is wrong but I keep asking my body “is this ok?” So today’s music is Heal Me by Snow Patrol.

    • It’s 37 this morning – I had all my warm stuff set out – longjohns & warm wool socks…… So I wasn’t super excited about an early morning workout in the cold, but that’s not why I didn’t go.

    • {{{ad}}} – sending you Healing Energy. Which includes Restful Sleep Energy as your body does the maintenance called healing while you sleep. moar {{{HUGS}}}

      • Thank you! I’m going to take a walk this afternoon – I’ve got one that is “Austin flat” so it won’t be too challenging. No idea where this came from.

        • ambient stress would be my guess. It’s cumulative and periodically it accumulates to the extent it messes with our sleep. Whatever stress reducers you can think of to do will probably help – although you may need to do a combination of them. I doubt any single kind can handle this kind of stress. moar Healing Energy, moar {{{HUGS}}}

  5. 28 and feels like 20 in Fay., AR. Still cloudy. Wind’s shifted to the north which has dropped the temps below freezing but will over the course of the day push the clouds out. I hope before the afternoon but am not going to bet on it. Only got .8 KWHs yesterday – the last 2 days together only totaled 1.5 – and the m-t-d is 56. Definitely not on track. But unfortunate truth to tell, only the year I upgraded (2015) did we get over 180 for January. Which we also aren’t on track for. sigh. But the gray days of winter, like the gray days of our political situation, shall pass. Not as quickly as we’d like, but they will pass.

    I wrapped a couple of cardboard boxes in plastic sheeting & turned them on their sides to make mostly weather proof “caves” for the black kittehs. All 3 have gone into at least one of the boxes at one time or other – the 2 that I think are littermates actually shared a box for a half hour or so yesterday. Of course the youngsters decided it was fun to hop on top of the box the older more feral cat was in. Kids! It’s the best I can do right now so it will have to do. For kittehs as well as my friends in need and the political situation.

    Looks like I’ll be working even longer than I thought. (Well, I’ve already worked almost 8 weeks longer than I originally thought.) The latest round of trying to hire didn’t work out. After the initial interviews the chosen ones seem to have decided “never mind” – sigh. We’ve got to get my schedule more standard though. I don’t mind being more or less “on call” but it makes it very hard to keep my hours to the 20 max. We shall see what we shall see. In this as in everything else, sending Healing Energy to everybody everywhere shaped to the need. Meanwhile, need more coffee. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning meese, 37 with high of 61. I want to sleep in but I’m meeting a friend for brunch so I can’t really do that ;)

    My roommate got her bed set up yesterday and I helped her unpack several boxes as well. Still a few more boxes to go and some furniture assembling to do, later today.

    • {{{basket}}} – enjoy your brunch. Good that everything is almost unpacked and set up. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 25 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 34. Sunny this morning then clouding up this afternoon – chance of flurries in the evening. We missed the winter storm that passed through and is wreaking havoc on the east coast now. Stay warm, peeps!

    The pain from the shutdown continues. The reality of having no paycheck is hitting those who can least afford it, including a federal worker who has to ration her insulin. Unnecessary deaths will be on the heads of Trump and McConnell – and every Republican who is enabling their party’s leader to have a temper tantrum over his wall. And what the hell kind of country is this where a drug needed for survival costs more than a person can afford to pay? Insulin should be free to diabetics. Period.

    I find myself unable to get worked up about the “revelation” that the Russians own Trump – either because of information they have on him or because of the millions of their dollars he needed from them to survive. Journalists reported on it in 2016 and our nominee kept telling us. But Clinton-hate in the national media buried the story and Republicans chose party over country – a few years of tax cuts and temporary power at the Supreme Court in exchange for destroying our moral authority, huge chunks of our economy, and our planet. We are going to have a huge mess to clean up if we survive.

    It is already halfway through January and I still have not got a handle on my project list! I have been working on end of year and beginning of year accounting and my work projects have gone by the wayside. This week I need to focus on project work or I will get to the end of January and find I have no billable time!

    See all y’all later!

  8. Good Monday Meese

    Sheesh – it’s 10 degrees here in Saugerties NY. Checking my pipes.

    It’s going up to 31.

    Puerto Rico

    Sarah Sanders attacks Democrats

    • It is stories like this that should remind Democrats that old white guys are NOT the future of our party; people who keep pushing Biden as our only hope to beat Trump are ignoring the results of the 2017 and 2018 elections.

  9. Fierces aren’t sticking well this morning for me. I am not sure if it is my browser session or if the database needs a little maintenance. In the meantime, consider yourself fierced – unless you said something rude or mean!! :)

  10. One last morning to sleep in, moved my wake-up time a little earlier so tomorrow isn’t quite such a shock. Now watching Stargate & eating breakfast. Been working on an art project, I have these cool graphic postcards , they’re on the screens in the pre-show of the U2 concerts. I bought a mirror & some mats, put the cards in them & put the plastic around them. I found my 2 sided tape so I can stick the cards to the mirror & finish the project today — now I have to figure out how to make sure I put it on the wall straight. Also got to get the car inspected & pay for my tag, make tea for the week & get my lunch together. Chilly day — won’t get higher than the 50s, but by Friday it’ll be in the upper 70s — and then a hard freeze over the weekend.

  11. Good freezing Moon Day, Moosekind! We here in the DC area received 8 to 12 inches of the white stuff yesterday. Taking Monty out is most unpleasant. The Raging Grannies’ demonstration at NRA HQ has been canceled, thank Goddess. We’ll go next month unless there’s more snow. Meanwhile, here in Ashburn, it’s 28 F. at 9:30, going up to 37 F. Younger Son is working at home today; Elder Son always works at home unless he’s traveling, and Mr. Preschooler is out playing in the snow while DIL shovels.

    Have only three more letters to write, but I do have two stories to work on for the quarterly. Have had trouble starting Chapter 18 (as in, “Characters, what happens now?”) but think I have solved it. My research on Kashmir is not going well, might have to move the location in Chapter 19 to India, in which country, I am sure, there are always plenty of goings-on.

    As I remarked on another blog, paraphrasing Sir Winston, will this week see the end of the beginning, or the beginning of the end? Time will tell.

    Wishing a nice, productive day to all at the Pond.

  12. 29 degrees and a thin layer of snow in Fay., AR means my PV system may not come on all day today. Need sun, above-freezing temps, or both to get rid of that layer of snow. We got 1.4 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 57. We seriously need some sunshine! For my sanity as well as my electricity generation.

    We’ve more or less set my schedule – 8-1 M-Tu-We-Fr and not in the office on Thursdays. If there’s a lunch meeting, add an extra hour. In this weather I’m not crazy about it. I either ride the bus in lousy weather (with the Raynaud’s issue) or take the car home then come back to pick up my friend. But it’s what’s best for the office and that’s what counts. We shall see how long I keep doing this. Maybe if they can get the position upgraded (as it should have been 3 years ago when my friend was in it) they can actually get somebody hired. We shall see what we shall see.

    Meanwhile, I have work to do (& need more coffee). And folks to “pray” for. So. Healing Energy to everybody (including critters like Aji’s Raven) everywhere shaped to the need. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  13. Good morning, Meesefolk; 12 when I got up this morning, with an expected SUNNY!!!! high of 34. I just stood outside and gaped when I saw the blue skies this morning; it’s been too long.

    I spent most of the weekend nursing the Sinus Headache from Hell, so I didn’t catch most of the bombshell news until this morning. This thread connects some dots I hadn’t even considered before; Individual 1 may be claiming that he doesn’t “work for the Russians,” but in the words of somebody famous for being right, he has clearly been their puppet:

      • Thank you! He’s not my guy for 2020, but there is so much I admire about him. What he’s accomplished in South Bend is impressive, and he was the guy I wanted for DNC Chair. He’s definitely someone to watch.

        • 2020 is obviously too early for him, even as a VP candidate, but it is energizing to see our bench filled with young, dynamic and intelligent people. Pete would make a great governor and we need more people running for governor in red states to start moving that Overton Window. Stacey Abrams would have won in Georgia if the voters had not been purged and Andrew Gillum would have won in Florida if a few things had broken his way. That is our future – win the states and we win the country.

  14. Good morning meese. 44 with high of 55. Overslept and literally just woke up, so need to scramble to get ready for work. I hope I’m not getting sick…

    • {{{basket}}} – Extra Healing Energy, just in case. Don’t forget the 500 mg vitamin C every couple of hours and the garlic soup (or hot and sour soup if you don’t have access to garlic soup). moar {{{HUGS}}}

  15. Martin Luther King’s Birthday Tuesday
    16 degrees here in Saugerties NY going up to 30.

    Kamala Harris

    Puerto Rico

    • MLK Jr. birthday! Thanks, I wonder if today is when Kamala will announce or if she is waiting for the federal holiday. We could use something to cheer us up with the dysfunction in Washington DC.

      For Kamala – from her Mood Mix (which I have bookmarked):

      (p.s. I love her laugh!)

  16. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 27 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 32. Mostly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

    THIS!! 175 million people live in states with Democratic governors. And another 100 million wish they did!! :)

    Now if we could pass a constitutional amendment to eliminate the electoral college and change the presidential election to direct election, we might have a chance. That the electoral college was put in place to give slave states more power should be disqualifying unto itself; that its stated purpose of adding an additional check to make sure that unfit people did not end up being president failed two times in the last 20 years, the most recent failure has us teetering on the brink of being a failed democracy.

    The faux outrage of Congressional Republicans over Steve King’s blatant racism is fun to watch. Its roots are not in any sort of change of heart, it is simply because King almost lost his election. When out racism loses elections, it is a liability. Someone pointed out that the Republicans are not unwilling to be the party of racists – they just want to go back to when it was not shouted. Too late! We see you and we are going to burn your party to the ground.

    I am in the middle of a big project that I have to finish and only stopped in to say hi.

    See all y’all later!

  17. Back to work, ugh. Thought about walking before work but decided that would be too much, will aim for after work instead. Tea & overnight oats. Chilly but warmer than yesterday when I needed hat & gloves while waiting for my car to be inspected — today I was fine with just a sweatshirt. Even warmer by Friday, then hard freezes Saturday & Sunday nights. The rollercoaster that is Austin’s winter. Today’s song: Armor by Sara Barielles.
