Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 10th through March 16th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, Moosekind! It’s warm this morning, 64 F., going up to 69 F. before the rain begins at noon. It’s annoying that I haven’t been able to go for walks during the mild weather we’ve been having, but seriously this is the worst cold I’ve had in years. I think I’m feeling a bit better today: hope so, because I have a child-tending job from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. tomorrow.

Haven’t heard from any of the beta readers yet (snort). Wonder whether I will! Oh, well, I can perform that task myself next week. It’s alway best to let a manuscript “cool” before one submits it to the publisher.

Woke up to the awful news from New Zealand. The most agonizing realization is that not only are white supremacists in this country feeling encouraged, the vile creature in the White House is influencing others around the world. Someone on another blog remarked that we were better off before the Internet: uh, there were still radio waves and transatlantic cable in those days. It was just slower, that’s all.

Hope I can get it together to do a few things today: didn’t get very far yesterday because I kept stopping to rest.

Wishing a good, quiet day to all at the Pond.

  2. Widget says 31 feels like 21 but it’s sunny and the cat water is still liquid. Not a day I particularly want to be out in but the sunshine is wonderful. Hopefully it will last the full day unlike yesterday. Still, we did get enough sun to generate 12 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 129.5 – so not on track but definitely headed in the right direction. I’m at work for a bit today – over 20 hours this week – since the hopefully last candidate for this position is being interviewed (like right now as I type). This afternoon the mobile vet is coming. The older boys and the twins are in the house of course. I’m hoping I can get and hold/scruff the outside one long enough for the vet tech to take over. And that the outside kitty will forgive me.

I’m appalled at the news from NZ. And disappointed. But that’s just my own fantasy view of a country I once tried to immigrate to (based on a whole lot more fantasy including the POV of a very sweet – as in sweet person who wrote sweet not-porn romances – romance writer from back in the 1950s-80s) kicking in. People are people and there are haters everywhere. Some places had just been doing a better job of keeping a lid on them before the fascists put twitler in the WH to unleash the Deplorables.

Still nothing from Aji’s surgeon or the cancer center. (I’m taking a chunk of hopefully my tax refund and commissioning something like that necklace she featured yesterday though. That was so gorgeous, so powerful, it just sort of reached out of the computer screen and grabbed me. & I’m so incredibly blessed that at this point in my life, while it will take a bit of shuffling and reorganizing and changing plans, I can actually do it.) Prayers/invocations of any and all Traditions are needed to even get her treated. Then we can work on successful treatment.

    I’m looking a some folks heading this way so I’d best get back to work. & coffee after I deal with them. heh. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  3. Good morning, 42 and cloudy in Bellingham. The news from New Zealand and knowing tRump is still spewing from our White House is over whelming me this morning. But fortunately I’ve got tablecloths to sew and a garden to tend. Today’s outdoor task will be mud containment, using river rocks instead of gravel between the pavers at the back entrance. The combo of moss and gravel was doing the job, but snow shoveling disturbed that system. I just need to find small rounded rocks so I won’t create a tripping hazard.

Best wishes to all as we go through our day.

  4. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 27 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 41. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

I am going news-lite for the next few days as I get caught up on projects and try to decide how much time I need to spend thinking about a primary election that is over a year away! I will be out of town for a few days and that will help; I will be too busy to be plugged into the 10 second news cycle.

The Fighting Back post may not get published until tomorrow morning as I am on a hard deadline and have to get back to project work. The Democratic Weekly Address is by the useless Senate Democrats so there won’t be a video or transcript until late afternoon (via CSPAN) in any event. Thank goodness the House is in the capable hands of Speaker Pelosi who understands the importance of news releases and inspirational speeches to her base.

    See all y’all later!

  5. Good morning, Moosekind! We never received the forecasted rain yesterday. Rather, there was wind, lots and lots of wind. If we weren’t already over normal for the year as far as moisture is concerned, i’d be upset. It’s fair today, though, with the current temperature 25 F. colder than yesterday’s at this hour: we have 43 F., going up to 56 F. Yesterday’s high was 75 F.!

A busy day lies ahead for me, as the Progressives’ Luncheon is at noon and at 4 I have a child-tending job. I’ll take along Arthur Bowie Chrisman’s Treasures Long Hidden if the girls want a bedtime story. (The Chinese excel in fairy tales.) I’m also going to make each of them a lavender sachet to put under their pillows.

The cold is going, thank Goddess! Speaking of Goddess, I’m glad that looking after Ruth Bader Ginsburg is high on Her priority list. RBG has survived illnesses that would have felled most people. She is one of my heras.

March winds always remind me of these lines by Swinburne:

When the hounds of Spring are on winter’s traces
The mother of months in meadow and plain
Fills the shadows and windy places
With lisp of leaves and ripple of rain…

Wishing a peaceful Saturday to all and prayers for the dead and wounded in New Zealand.

  6. Saturday Meese

Sorry to be later than usual – overslept. 45 here in NYS going up to 47

    Puerto Rico

  7. Slept in, watching the news, got laundry on — and the heater. Can’t believe it’s cold enough in mid-March to be running the heater, but it’s actually coming on repeatedly to keep it at 66. The A-block on Up, about the New Zealand shooting, was powerful, I highly recommend watching it online if you can. (both the 1st hour & the 2nd one) Great discussion of white supremacy, how it spreads — a comparison with ISIS, and how words matter…. it’s just really worthwhile. Today’s song can’t be anything other than Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way.

  8. It’s 31 & feels like 26 – there was a film of ice on the cats’ water dish but just an easily-breakable film – and sunny. Sunny is good. We got 20 KWHs yesterday! W00T!!! – and with the m-t-d at 150 we are now finally and officially on track to get over 300 for the month. How much over 300 we get will depend on how many 20-KWH days we get – but it’s great to actually be on track.

Aji called the cancer center yesterday (again) but this time reached an Admin who actually cares. Said Admin found Aji’s file (yes of course it had been dropped/forgotten), flagged it to the appropriate people – and called back 5 minutes later to update Aji, then transfer her to the Appointments desk. Aji’s got a preliminary appointment Wednesday at which they’re suppose to schedule the surgery as well as discuss all her options. Best case scenario – the cancer’s contained, surgery will get it all, and radiation will take care of the masses on her liver as well as keep the thyroid cancer from coming back. Since that’s the best case, that’s the one I’m focusing on. Prayers/invocations/Good Vibes/whatever your Tradition calls for – and on – are good.

The mobile vet used to work at the City Shelter before he started his practice – his initials are on Cloud’s original adoption paperwork. He and the Vet Tech are good people and I’m glad I’m changing over to them. They don’t have Sunday hours like the clinic I’ve been using – but I don’t have to worry about them killing my cats either. (There’s only one “cat” vet at the clinic – the rest are dog people who apparently extrapolate to cats what’s good for dogs. Not always with good results. And the cat vet doesn’t usually work Sundays anyway.) Charlie and Cloud definitely preferred to have the vet come to them. LOL. The Twins, now at least temporarily named Friendly Cat and Scaredy Cat, weren’t happy about it – but then their only experience with vets was when the TNR people got them and “fixed” them. It being a pretty day I’ve let them out this morning. We shall see if they come back in. I’m pretty sure FC will but not sure about SC. But at least they have their shots now. The outside only cat wasn’t around so didn’t get seen/vaccinated. I’ll have to think of something else for him.

Not even going to go into world affairs right now. The hate is always there. The dangerous, cornered-rat, inferiority claiming superiority and privilege is always there. And if we aren’t fighting the fight ourselves, then it is always for our children and grandchildren to re-fight the wars our parents and grandparents fought. Humans don’t learn.

    Meanwhile my washer just stopped so I need to hang the laundry on the racks. Yes, it’s a beautiful sunny day. No, I’m not hanging clothes outside in freezing weather. Once the laundry’s up I need to get to the grocery store. And get some coffee in there somewhere before this headache decides to become a migraine. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  9. Good morning, 40 and partly sunny in Bellingham. My river rock/paver plan changed to salal pruning yesterday so I’m weary today, but wanting to do more so I’ll go slow. The salal around the upper patio has grow too tall but I haven’t wanted to prune it back because it was so healthy and attractive. But now it’s winter burned so clipping the damaged branches means I can cut it back to a better height.

    Best wishes to all.
