Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: March 31st through April 6th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, Meesefolk; 34 this morning with a cloudy, drizzly high of 55. We’ll see…I have my doubts that we’ll get that warm.

    I’m probably going to cocoon a lot this weekend; either outside with garden cleanup or inside doing any number of long-delayed tasks. If I don’t keep my head down, I may explode at the ongoing hubris of white males in the political sphere, and in the long run, that’s not particularly helpful. It would feel great in the short-term, but I keep reminding myself that I need to keep my eye on the long game.

    And way to busy at work again to keep chatting. :( Good day to and for all!

  2. Depending on which widget I look at it’s either mid 40s or mid 50s – both say we’re heading up to low 70s. Have I mentioned I hate daylight savings time? The temps don’t drop until after sundown which unless I want a house full of smoke means I can’t light a fire until almost my bedtime. sigh. Oh well. I was right about yesterday’s production, didn’t make 10 – we came in at 8.8 KWHs and the m-t-d is 63.7 – not bad of course but nowhere near on track to reach 400 by the end of the month. But the sun is shining right now so that’s good.

    Everything is still in wait mode. Everything. Which sux of course. I think the Dept Chair is gonna bite the bullet and choose one of the two women they interviewed this week. She’s not really happy about it but this has been going on for months now and at least both of these women have decent references and seem to be willing to actually take the job for the $23K it pays. She was still waffling – thinking about bringing in one more candidate – yesterday afternoon but it’ll have been 6 months as of next Monday. Poor woman. “Upstairs” wants this resolved like months ago, some of the faculty don’t care as long as it’s somebody who will do the work without having to be told, and some of the faculty keep trying to find excuses for not hiring anybody so they can keep me. Meanwhile Aji’s had no word, my various friends with lodging issues have had no word, other friends with medical issues have had no word…But the cycle of the seasons keeps turning. It’s warmer and beautiful outside. (No comment about the pollen.) Which allows me to ignore what’s on my TL.

    I’ve gotten the oil changed in the car, done a Tractor Supply run for more kibble & litter – I’m not sure which the 5 kittehs are going through fastest, kibble or litter – and have mixed the various meats and spices for my breakfast sausages and put it in the fridge to meld until Sunday. I will probably wait until tomorrow to get gas and groceries. Keepin’ on keepin’ on. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Bfitz, it’s hard to imagine a job paying that little! But then, the work women do in the office isn’t valued—until it isn’t done. It’s just like housework, people only notice when it’s done badly or not at all.

      Hope your office can find someone competent! Have they ever thought about the concept of “You get what you pay for”?

  3. Good morning, 53 and cloudy in Bellingham. I was nice to be away for a few days, but waking up in my own bed is nice too. Ryan and I planned on working on a project today but we may just decide to stay in vacation mode.

    Regardless, I’m going to try to stay twitter lite today. Things happen, and then we wait. And in the meanwhile life goes on. Best wishes to all.

  4. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 45 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 64. Showers this morning giving way to partly cloudy skies this afternoon. The “warm” is here but it is accompanied by precipitation. I was looking ahead to next week when I have to travel for work and there is snow and sleet expected Wednesday and Thursday. :(

    The National Action Network, Al Sharpton’s group, invited the 2020s to their convention and I have both Elizabeth Warren’s and Kamala Harris’ videos up in tabs to watch later. I heard that both were excellent (I will also post them in comments in Fighting Back). I am going to stop complaining about the B boys and especially VP B because it seems to bother people. My grabby Joe complaint is not about #MeToo – I don’t for a minute think that Biden is trying to sexually assault anyone – it is about the lack of respect that many men have for women’s personal space (it really isn’t funny, btw). I will read and watch but not weigh in any longer. One thing I found out – the problem with South Bend cluelessness is not something in the water because Muffet McGraw, head coach of Notre Dame women’s basketball, certainly “gets it”:

    McGraw’s speech has been applauded by her colleagues, such as Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve and University of South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley; it’s caused Today to question its own lack of coverage of women’s basketball; it’s sparked conversations in local newspapers across the country and on ESPN debate shows. And, it’s even been shared by President Barack Obama, who called McGraw, “A voice everybody should hear.” She could have just focused on basketball this weekend. But, of course, that notion implies that it’s possible for McGraw to separate basketball and women’s empowerment. To her, they are one in the same.

    I am glad her team won last night and look forward to them beating Baylor for the championship on Sunday.

    The Democratic Party Weekly Address is by Rep. Colin Alldred of Texas and it is on health care. The Republicans want to make 2020 about health care? Bring it on.

    See all y’all later!

    • Jan – I was watching that – here’s more coverage of her remarks

      My husband is a huge women’s basketball fan – we watched the games last night – and I complain about all the men that have top jobs in women’s bb.

      • I know your husband is a UConn fan but I hope you were able to quietly cheer on Coach McGraw’s team. :) Arike Ogunbowale is from Milwaukee and I have been rooting for her and her team even though I am not a fan of Notre Dame; her performance in last year’s National Championship game was thrilling and I admit to replaying her winning shot more than once!

        It is pretty bold for a coach working for a paternalistic organization like the Catholic Church to be so forceful about the role of women:

        “Enough. I think women across the country in the last few years have just said enough,” McGraw said. “Time’s up. Time’s up. It is our turn.”

        McGraw had a lot to say about the importance of hiring women and noted numerous ways in which others have fallen short. Among other things, McGraw made note of the fact that the Equal Rights Amendment, which was introduced in 1967, still hasn’t passed. She also pointed to startling statistics which reveal that women only make up 23% of the U.S. House of Representatives, 25% of the Senate, and less than 5% of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. […]

        “I’m getting tired of the novelty of the first female governor of this state, the first female African American mayor of this city. When is it going to become the norm instead of the exception? How are these young women looking up and seeing someone that looks like them, preparing them for the future? We don’t have enough female role models. We don’t have enough visible women leaders. We don’t have enough women in power,” McGraw added.

        “When these girls are coming out, who are they looking up to to tell them that’s not the way it has to be. Where better to do that than in sports? All these millions of girls that play sports across the country, we’re teaching them great things about life skills, but wouldn’t it be great if we could teach them to watch how women lead?”“When you look at men’s basketball, 99% of the jobs go to men, why shouldn’t 100 or 99% of the jobs in women’s basketball go to women? Maybe it’s because we only have 10% women athletic directors in Division I. People hire people who look like them. That’s the problem,

        Exactly.

  5. Saturday Meese. It snowed here last night in the Hudson Valley of NY- is melting this morning. 41 degrees now going up to 64.

    Puerto Rico

  6. What a fantastic day yesterday! Blew way past my fundraising goal. I have a lot of thank you e-mails to send. Also today: groceries, exercise, put beans on to soak, and at 5:30 I’m going to an interfaith dinner at a local mosque. Love this song, that I put in the diary yesterday: It Won’t Always Be Like This.

    • Wonderful! I’d hoped you would but got tied up with a few other fundraiser issues and didn’t get back to check. Have fun at your interfaith dinner. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Getting in late this morning – I had over 75 “notifications” on twitter to sort through among other things (mostly in the thread about jan4insight getting banned at DK for her follow-up fundraiser diary – Goddess only knows how she’s gonna manage…but gtghawaii made her rent so that’s good) like grocery shopping and other Saturday stuff. We got 20.9 KWHs yesterday bringing the m-t-d to 84 with this morning’s production. Not exactly a cloudy day today but not brilliant sunshine either – holding the Good Thought for another 20 but since we’ve got rain in this afternoon’s forecast…We shall see what we shall see.

    Haven’t checked my TL yet. Haven’t checked a bunch of stuff yet. Need to get some more coffee and read the Dems Fighting Back post. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning, 51 and cloudy in Bellingham. Spring break with our grand kids has been fun and a much needed rest from relentless tRump angst. Thoughts re finishing school, making prom plans, new reading programs, silly fun at the sock store, etc all make life feel relatively normal!

    Ryan goes back home today so all the chips and cookies will soon be Ron’s again :)

    Best wishes to all.
