Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 5th through May 11th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Early good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 39 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 55. Mainly sunny skies.

    Woke up, couldn’t get back to sleep – decided to make some notes from my travel day Thursday. I figured I better check in before I fell back to sleep, there is definitely a nap in my future!

    See all y’all later!

  2. TGIF Meese

    53 going up to 73 with rain here in NYS

    Things that make you go hmmmmm

    Puerto Rico

  3. Good morning, Moosekind! As usual our Friday is full of clouds. Sometimes it gets very dark indeed, sometimes the clouds pass and the sky lightens again. (Could this be a metaphor for our political scene?) Anyway, we may have showers today. Then again, we may not. Currently the temperature in Ashburn is 66 F., possibly going up to 79 F. if it feels like it.

    So excited to learn on another blog that we may be witnessing the end of Cocaine Mitch soon! Cocaine, the illegal shipment of, has been found on one of his father-in-law’s ships. Said father-in-law is the father of Elaine Chao, the current Secretary of Labor. Rethugs are crooked and evil.

    I don’t know why the women of Georgia and Alabama don’t pack up and move to blue states. Probably for the same reason I don’t try to emigrate to a country that bans guns in the hands of inept civilians—I’m too old and my family are here.

    Even my horoscope this morning is advising me to “clear my desk” in preparation for next week. Guess I’d better get busy.

    Best wishes to all at the Pond this morning. As for those Beyond, specifically, the Fools on the Hill—jail awaits you!

  4. A little more rain yesterday — but what the front really brought was a cool down. It’s in the 50s this morning, been weeks since it was that cool. I seem to have done something to my lower back, it is quite unhappy. I took a muscle relaxer, hope it helps — I put some muscle rub on it last night, and if this is what it feels like with that helping….. Anyway, going to use a rain check movie ticket today & see Captain Marvel. Maybe over the weekend I’ll watch Thor: Ranganok. Or, if I can use another of the rainchecks I have, actually see Endgame.

    I wrote a short rant on FB about how some of us don’t need to see ads for that holiday on Sunday. Quite a few people have liked it. Ok, I’m going to post a happy, feisty song:Empress .

  5. It’s in the 40s right now – supposedly heading to mid 60s but it never got there yesterday – and still overcast. It seems a bit lighter than yesterday so I will hope for the best. We barely got 4 KWHs and the m-t-d is 116. We gonna have to do better than that just to keep banking for the A/C I know my grandson will be running while I’m in Sedalia with basket. There are 4 sleeping cats in here – 2 by the woodstove and 2 by the window where they apparently fell asleep watching birds and squirrels. The 5th cat is wide awake still watching birds and squirrels.

    Focusing on personal stuff – which of course includes the more public stuff my personal friends are working on – doing my little bit to help folks with groceries or paying down medical bills, doing a lot of prayers & invocations on resolving the debts and the health issues that caused/is causing the debt. For myself, complaints so minor compared to everybody else’s I try not to think about them. Once it warms up I need to go to the bank and then do a Tractor Supply run – 5 cats use a lot of litter as well as eat a lot of kibble. But first coffee. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Hey – I found a group that buys medical debt. Bad news is they buy in pools & can’t target any particular people. But they do have a place to register, in case they ever can: https://www.ripmedicaldebt.org/get-help/#. I didn’t want to suggest to Aji directly, since you know her better, what do you think?

      • I think I’ll give her the link – unless you want to – in a DM. I’d say it’s worth a shot but she might not want her personal info out there. Thank you for this. {{{HUGS}}}

      • I DM’d the link to her. Odds are good she already knows about it but just in case… {{{HUGS}}} and bless you.

  6. Good morning, 53 and sunny in Bellingham. I need a fresh start so I’m tossing all my lists and will try to be more reality based. What I want to do each day isn’t getting done so whatever happens today will be fine with me! Sometimes long lists help me stay focused, other times they set unrealistic expectations and make me grumpy.

    Best wishes to all on this Friday morning full of possibilities :)

  7. Jan, FYI I just got a message (that I uploaded in the image file) that the Moose is infected with vbs malware gen. I’m obviously connected, AVG now says I’m clean, and Malwarebytes is not detecting anything. I have no idea if I brought this over, if it was here, or if I had a false positive. But I thought I should let you know.

    • Thanks! I will look at it. WordPress is pestering me for another upgrade and it might be related to fixing a security issue. The site doesn’t use vbs scripts but one of the (very few) 3rd party links we use might. They may need to be updated as well.

  8. Good morning meese, a quick check in. 66 with high of 86. Do you want our weather DoReMI? 😂

  9. Evening update: Home from seeing Captain Marvel. Loved it. Would happily go back 4 or 5 times. Getting out of the theater seat was…challenging. Back hurts more than it did this morning. Called doc again, prescription not called in, I have to see the NP tomorrow. Grrrrr. I have 2 muscle relaxers left, will take one at bedtime & the other when I wake up in the night.

  10. Good morning, meese! Saturday …

    It is 43 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 55. Mostly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

    Sounds like Don McGahn will do anything for tRump except lie for him. Ratfk the Supreme Court, shred the Constitution, trash every established norm for the presidency – fine. Lie for him? Nope. He obviously knows the law and while he had no problems enabling a complete unfit president to damage every American institution, he doesn’t want to go to jail.

    Just a quick check-in. I am not going to have large enough chunks of uninterrupted online time over the weekend to do the Fighting Back post so I will wait and do it Monday morning.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Saturday Meese. 51 going up to 66 here in Saugerties

    I want to say thank you to Nydia Velasquez – who never stops fighting for Puerto Rico – and gets very little credit, or media attention.

    Caturday – Bobby feeding cats in Puerto Rico

    Added just because Iove this photo:

    • Dee – I know there’s a link somewhere but my search skills suck – Puerto Ricans and taxes. I try to correct that “don’t pay taxes” lie wherever I see it but it would be nice to link how much in taxes Puerto Ricans pay. If you know it, I’d appreciate it. Thanks. {{{HUGS}}}

  12. Good Saturn’s Day morning, Moosekind! It rained during the night but for the present it’s stopped. It’s supposed to rain this afternoon and all day tomorrow too. It’s 60 F. right now in Ashburn, going up to a coolish 64 F. later.

    Yesterday I started feeling a bit ill-ish (headache, sore throat) and today I have my annual May Something. Ugh, it’s going to be such a busy day, too, with a mani-pedi this morning and haircut this afternoon. In between I have to launch my book to the extent I can.

    Turnabout is out, Meese! It’s on Amazon Kindle, iBooks, Nook, Kobo, and other platforms. If you haven’t a device, you can still load the free Kindle app to your laptop and read it there. Here’s a link (hope it works):

    https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RML7X56?pf_rd_p=019ad97c-f176-43be-96b9-991a6dc65763&pf_rd_r=4ZCV0S85XKBS6KZDC4SR

    This is a rollicking romance, the writing of which has afforded me a great deal of amusement. Hope reading it will do the same for you! Turnabout won’t strain your brain, your wallet, or your patience as it’s only 40,000 words.

    There’s not much I can do about politics this weekend, so I’m going to concentrate on real life. Wishing a nice, quiet weekend to all, filled with personal joys and satisfactions and no bad news.

  13. Another cool morning — 50s, brrrr. Going to need long sleeves when I head out to the doctor’s office this morning. My back hurts rather a lot. Will take some tylenol with breakfast, hope that tides me over. Meanwhile, watching the news & eating breakfast. Today’s music: U2, Mercy.

    Love is justice, a charity
    Love brings with it a clarity
    Love has come again
    I’m alive again
    Alive…

    • {{{ad}}} – if it’s somewhere you can actually do this (low back is easy, neck is easy, mid-back not so much) try alternating ice and warm compresses – 15 minutes each. That helps me. Healing Energy and moar {{{HUGS}}}

      • Leaving for the doctor’s office soon. It’s my lower back, so I’ll try what you said when I get home. Thank you!

  14. Well, after a lovely sunny if chilly 20-KWH day yesterday (m-t-d- at 139) this morning I woke to 40 and rain. It’s now 50 and rain and might even get up to 60 and rain – maybe. I do hope the rain passes through by mid morning, at least by noon, so we can get some good production again. Rain makes me drowsy – wish I could sleep in the daytime. Oh, to be a cat. One of mine (or basket’s or kishik’s or Bobby’s or…) – all the oldsters are sleeping and the twins are watching squirrels.

    Direct link to Bobby’s GMF is https://www.gofundme.com/santa-rita-abandoned-kitties-fund – bless him. Aji’s various fundraiser streams aren’t producing. sigh. She shouldn’t even owe this ($30K to the 2 hospitals back in 2017 – the $15K for the rest of the various bills from then is paid), much less have to be fundraising to pay it. And she’s pay-go so she can’t do the next set of testing, diagnosis, and treatment until it’s paid. Our society sux. Other folks I know/try to help a little have medical debt as the foundation of their financial woes – but they don’t have not-kept treaty agreements that are supposed to cover medical (& housing). Our society sux for them too but just ordinary suckatude, not the magnitudes greater suckatude Natives deal with daily. One more thing we have to win elections – lots of them – to change.

    I’ve got chicken carcasses on to make stock. I’ll make soup tomorrow. Grocery store has a “4-hour only” meat & poultry sale today so I’m delaying my shopping until it starts. So I will boost stuff and read stuff & get coffee first. Bright the day, Meeses.

  15. Good morning, 56 and sunny in Bellingham. I finally have some flowers to plant, so I’ll be in the garden today. My garden is slowly recovering from the seasonally late snow and cold temps we experienced, but I have more pruning to do, especially in the salal beds. New growth is finally showing so I know where to clip and that helps. The garden shops are still recovering too, as are the growers. Some of my favorite plants won’t be available this year so I’ll be creative with what ever I find.

    Best wishes to all.

  16. Home from the doc, well nurse practitioner really. I got a prescription for a muscle relaxer & instructions to take 800 mg of ibuprofen 2x daily, and stretches & gentle exercise like walking. She said to use heat, not cold. She actually felt the muscles in my back, said she could definitely tell where the tightness was.

    I splurged on breakfast tacos, really was an early lunch. And it is cold! 59 degrees, which for May in Texas & the middle of the day, I don’t know if it’s totally unheard of, but it is definitely weird. And omg, the flooding in Houston is terrible. It’s just plain old rain here. Waiting for my stomach to settle after my large, early lunch. Will buy groceries & go for a walk if it dries out later.

    • Very gentle on the stretches and walking while the muscles are tight. Heat relaxes tight muscles. Ice reduces inflammation. That’s why I usually say to alternate them. But if there’s no inflammation then, yeah, heat alone. {{{HUGS}}} and Healing Energy.

      • thank you for the hugs & healing energy – I really feel it
