Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 5th through May 11th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 46 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 70. Scattered showers are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese. 60 degrees here in Saugerties NY and we have rain all day.

    Puerto Rico

  3. Good Soggy Sunday morning, Meese! It’s raining heavily here, to the point where Monty Beagle conducted only half his business in the courtyard shortly after 6 a.m. The current temp. is 61 F., going up to 64 F. It was supposed to rain from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., but it began at 11 p.m. last night.

Dearly Beloved and Mr. Roblox just woke up, so we’re having early morning tea and yogurt drink before getting dressed to go through the rain to breakfast.

Took a break from politics last night to watch “The King and I” (the 1956 Rogers and Hammerstein version) last night. It was still impressive but seemed dated. Even Dearly had difficulty with the low sound level and there’s nothing wrong with his hearing. The hoopskirts seem utterly ridiculous now, although I remember wearing one to school in 1956.

A glance at the front page of the WaPo assured me that the pundits are still pontificating, Thing is thinking up some hideous new mistreatment of asylum seekers, and China is experiencing very low population growth. The one-child policy worked all too well: people are conditioned not to want more than one, and since they often terminate fetuses that aren’t male, they’re beginning to get into real trouble.

Dee, thank you for reminding us to call our senators about the money already approved for Puerto Rico that is still sitting in DC.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  4. Very Disturbing:

    • That is disturbing. I still think there is only a 50-50 chance that Trump is still the president on Election Day 2020. It is why people who are running against Trump – and not running against Republicanism – are making a big mistake (we see you, Joe!). We are running to recapture and redirect the future towards Democratic Party goals. People need to run however they need to run to win Congressional seats and Senate seats in their CD and state but our presidential nominee needs to run as a pragmatic Democrat appealing to Democrats and left leaning independents. I am not going to worry about Trump leaving, I am going to work towards getting the best Democratic nominee and head into the general election after next summer’s convention determined to win. There are more of us when we are allowed to vote and we can win if we work to protect the vote, get people registered and get to the polls and vote.

      • Pardon if I posted this before

          • I think Josh has a better chance at taking down Cotton than he did taking down Boozman. This corner of AR has been R territory since there’ve been Rs. AR-03 has only had 2 Dems in the last century, only one actually a decent person (J. William Fulbright early in WWII before he became a Senator) – and decent is in the eye of the beholder you might say. He did a lot of good stuff but he also signed the Southern Manifesto in the mid 1950s. sigh. But senator is a statewide race so not a great chance but definitely possible.

  5. Sunday piece up at Orange

    • I see you picked up a couple of trolls in the diary. sigh. The folks who don’t understand that speaking up for Puerto Rico now, even if they can’t do anything, keeps Puerto Rico from being forgotten and not gotten to when we can do something. And of course Puerto Rico is “canary in the coal mine” for so many things from the whole bag is stuff that is climate change to universal healthcare to keeping our commitments – be they made to our various territories or to Indigenous tribes/Natives via treaties. But then some of those trolls seem to be of the same sort of mindset that doesn’t keep promises anyway.

  6. Eating breakfast — almond butter sandwich. And watching the news. Went to a friend’s campaign kick off yesterday, there are 2 other women in the race: 1 who never voted until she ran for something; the other has voted in numerous Republican primaries and runoffs. So that’ll be important. And I watched……2 ½ Star Wars movies, couldn’t stay awake for the end of Rogue One. Sad that there’s no way I could stay up till 11. Music: To Noise Making (Sing).

Who could ask to be unbroken or be brave again?
Or honey hope even on this side of the grave again?
And who could ask it to be sound or to feel saved again?
Or stick around until you hear that music play again
So honey sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing
Sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, sing
So honey sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing
Sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, sing (For the love of it)
Sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing, and sing (For the love of it)
Remember when you’d sing, just for the love of it
    Any joy it would bring

    • In an obscure kid book a long, long, long time ago I ran across the phrase “Life is a song for singing” and it’s stuck with me every since. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. It’s around 50 depending on which widget you look at and the sun is out at the moment. We’re supposed to be partly-cloudy today but so far it’s being sunnier than it was yesterday when we only got 8 KWHs. Our m-t-d is 47.5 which is most certainly not on track for 500 and is barely on track for 300. sigh. The forecast isn’t hopeful for generating electricity over the next week. double sigh.

The owners of the MSM use CNN when they want to stir up trouble most folks wouldn’t believe if it came from Faux Noise. I see they did a stellar job last night. Talk about “Squirrel!” – I’ve never expected Twitler to voluntarily step down no matter what the vote is. But the Founders had no problem whatsoever with believing a president would come along who didn’t want to give it up. That’s why the elections are run by the states, the votes/election is certified by Congress, and the Supreme Court swears in the winner. Admittedly it would be novel for the new president to have to send the sheriff to evict a squatter in the White House but that’s what the process would be. Not a revolution. Not one chunk of the US military standing off another chunk of the US military. Just the regular law enforcement issue of removing/evicting someone from a residence they aren’t legally entitled to be in any longer.

The joy of Aji’s good news is settling down to a steady glow – pleasant but allows the concerns of “what next” to seep through. Since the surgeon thinks the cardio-respiratory events/episodes are severe and exacerbated asthma attacks treating the asthma first seems logical and that’s what they’re doing. Aji’s been slower than she’d like on paying off the old medical debt (of which only the two actual hospital bills are left) because she’s been pay-as-you-go with the new stuff as it comes along. All of it still out of network so they’re covering 100% of the cost. (& yeah, if the Treaty Rights were fulfilled she wouldn’t be in this situation – so what else is new?) We shall see what we shall see. On this and my other folks dealing with health & lodging issues – as in how to pay for either or both. sigh. Prayers and invocations always welcome/needed.

    It’s trying to be a pleasant day, no rain and going up to mid 70s, but the barometric pressure is on a roller coaster and I’m moving slowly. Of course the cats were taken care of – they insist. Loudly. And I did get my breakfast – mostly because I don’t care for the results if I don’t. But of my Sunday chores list I’ve only managed 2 so far. So more coffee and checking in a few places then go do one more thing to check off the list. Rinse, repeat as the saying goes. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning, 49 and sunny in Bellingham. The new green leaves on my old maple trees are a brilliant contrast to the lichen covered branches. With the light blue sky behind gazing out my window is a lovely start to my day.

RonK decided to cook a Cinco De Mayo dinner for the family tonight so the dining room will be full again. He’s the main cook this time and I’m the baker, so I’ll either make a desert using fresh rhubarb or (my preference) chocolate. I scrounged cuttings from our garden and my son’s Andromeda to remake last weeks flowers, and will use my grandmother’s Mexicana dishes. I don’t have very many pieces so I mix with
the McCoy brown pottery dishes I’ve collected for years. It’s fun to use the old pieces occasionally, and to share my memories with my grand girls.

After dinner our sons will stay to watch Game of Thrones, so we’ll have plenty of real life distraction from our ongoing tRump angst. Sure wish his season was ending soon!

    Best wishes to all.

  9. Monday Meese

58 going up to 72 here in NYS

Kamala Harris was great last night in Detroit – at the NAACP Freedom fundraiser where about 10,000 people attended

    The crowd

    Puerto Rico

Red Sox manager Alex Cora’s decision to skip a trip to the WH was trending on twitter yesterday

    • I did not see the Alex Cora news until just a little while ago. Good for him for not pretending it is normal for an administration to withhold disaster relief fund because of the racism of its leader.

    • I am trying to find a video of Kamala’s speech in Detroit. There are not many candidates who can speak with her moral authority on issues of race and justice.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 52 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 55. Mainly cloudy skies with possible sunny breaks. Yesterday we got into the 70s – it is possible that we will see that again!

Dee, you will be pleased to see that Alex Cora, manager of the Boston Red Sox, won’t be going to the White House with his championship team because of Trump’s neglect of Puerto Rico: “It’s pretty tough to go celebrate when we’re where we’re at. I’d rather not go.” Good for him, don’t pretend it is normal for a president* to withhold disaster relief funds because he hates brown people.

I was offline most of yesterday and trying to catch up is difficult because FireFox is no longer supporting the ad blocker I was using, uBlock Origin. It makes reading newsites nearly impossible. If it was just flat ads, that would be one thing but blocking the video ads was the main reason I chose to block. They slow everything down and when I open my browser I have a half dozen tabs screaming at me. I need to find a new adblocker or start culling news sites that are particularly disrespectful of me and my ability to use my computer.

I have a stack of projects that needs to be sorted down and I best get to it.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Good Moonday, Moosekind! This morning got off to a cloudy start but now we have tentative sunlight and wisps of white cloud against a background of pale blue. Currently the temperature is 55 F., going up to 74 F. today.

One of my friends on another blog informed me last night that the side effects of losartan (brand name Cozaar), the bp medication I take, include insomnia and leg cramps. Guess what I didn’t take this morning along with my usual assortment of pills! My quality of life has been devastated by insomnia: when I’m awake most of the night, I can’t work, work out, or even do housework the next day. Surely there is some other way to lower the blood pressure. If it takes a vegan diet and an hour of exercise a day, I might consider such a radical change of lifestyle.

Enough about that. I’m not looking forward to the political news this week as it’s never, ever good. The WaPo Style section is madly in love with Mayor Pete and his husband. Dear Goddess. To me, the women candidates are vastly more interesting than any of the men, with the possible exception of Cory Booker (a Rhodes scholar) and Julian Castro (significant achievements already).

Okay, got to get to work. The sun is coming out more strongly, which is good. Yesterday the rain was day-long and so intense it made me long for whisky, which I’m not allowed. Constant heavy rain is so Somerset Maugham-ish!

Wishing a nice quiet day to all at the Pond.

    • I am so sorry to hear about your insomnia and how it is impacting you! Medical “science” seems to spend little time bothering to understand that the medications they provide can have a debilitating effect on people’s quality of life. The only medication my mother takes is for blood pressure, a requirement after having a kidney removed. I seem to remember that it took a lot of trial and error to get the dosage correct but she has been on the same medication for years. I can find out what drug she uses – I know she does not have insomnia.

  12. Slept in, planning to get in a workout & some house cleaning today. And maybe one of the Marvel movies I need to see before Endgame. Will be lazy this morning, but hope I don’t waste the whole day.

      • Reluctantly I confess that I’m fascinated by Diana’s sons, as I’m a Diana with two sons of my own. I especially dig Harry. Ooh, what wouldn’t his distant ancestor, Henry VIII, have given to be able to announce similar news when Anne Boleyn gave birth!

But there, Anne had a a daughter, a girl who would turn out to be one of the most outstanding monarchs ever to grace the British throne, a queen who liked plays and wanted to see plays, and to hell with the Puritans that wanted to close the theaters! Because of her we have William Shakespeare, and all present know how I feel about Shakespeare.

        • I’ve always had a soft spot for Harry; growing up in the spotlight can’t have been easy. That he seems to have grown up to be a good man is extraordinary. And his joy announcing the birth, it was so good to see joy, and babies are the best!

  13. It’s in the upper 50s heading for mid 70s and so dark the PV system is still in night mode. Rain moved in last night. I heard it but wasn’t awake enough to check the clock. LOL. Yesterday was lovely – we got 23.4 KWHs generated bringing the m-t-d to 70. We only need 20 more days like that – which we apparently are not going to get – to meet our target for the month. But as long as we generate more than I use, I may not be happy but I’m satisfied. All the adult cats are napping and the youngsters are playing – all those old toys Charlie looked at and went “meh” are getting a real workout now there are kids in the house. Cloud’s preferred toy is/was milk jug rings but the twins like balls, paperwads, and catnip mice. And boxes of course. And doing “thunder kitties” running through the house.

Evil ones doing evil. We can protest but we can’t stop them until we vote them out. Which we’re working on. It’s depressing at times but we have to recruit our strength and join our energy and just get it done. And save as many lives along the way as we can. So much of that comes down to money – especially if, for whatever reason, physical help isn’t something you can do – and of course so many of us don’t have much in the way of money. sigh. But that old saying of “many a mickle makes a muckle” – adding our bits together makes enough. Just so many folks need a muckle. sigh. We do what we can.

    On health issues everybody I know, including Aji, is in the wait-and-see mode as they try new/different meds and see what if any kind of improvement before checking out the next thing. On financial issues everybody I know with health issues is in a hole. So the mickles go out – as do the prayers and invocations. Meanwhile I need coffee and to check in various places before I do some offline stuff (with cats that’s never ending). Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  14. Good morning, Meesefolk; 46 this morning with a rainy high of 72. The sun this morning was so incredibly bright and welcome that I even got up an hour early to greet the day; the rain moving in means I’m sticking with wearing a light sweater today. I’ll probably regret my early rise by this afternoon, but sitting outside wearing a fleece and wrapped in a blanket this morning, basking in the sun and listening to the birdcall was worth it.

I’m so disappointed I didn’t go to the NAACP dinner this year. When the date was announced for this year, I had other plans on the calendar; they got cancelled later, but by then it was too late to get a ticket for the dinner. This dinner is one of my favorite events of the year. Even though I go by myself, once I get there, I never feel alone. The sense of community is just amazing…it’s like a mixture of church, sorority/fraternity, name-your-favorite-team fans, and concert crowd all in one. Everyone is just so damn nice and so excited to be there; some of the older folk (older than me that is) tell amazing stories about attending the first dinners with their parents and grandparents when they were in elementary school. The video of Sen. Harris remarks is available through ABC News on Facebook, but I have no idea how/if it can be posted here.

Good day to and for all!

    • The video does not appear to be anywhere but on Facebook. I wish media outlets would realize that Facebook is a dangerous platform and provide the videos elsewhere. CSPAN should have covered it – they cover the orange orshole’s hate rallies.

I watched the video off my phone where I can manage Facebook settings. It was great. I hope that someday soon Kamala’s media people start posting videos and transcripts on her campaign web site. I need to see the words and promote the videos!!

  15. Good morning, 56 and sunny in Bellingham. Yesterday was fun and today will be busy as soon as my knees decide to cooperate. I need a quiet morning, but the sunshine is tempting me to visit a garden shop this afternoon.

    Best wishes to all.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 45 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 55. Mostly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

Thanks to basket, I got my adblocker problem resolved. Firefox fixed the problem with UBlock Origin but it required an update. So I moved from 60.0.1 to 66.0.4. Unfortunately (as always happens which is why I never take the automatic updates) several things are broken. My Moose RSS comment feed does not work and my bookmarks are not on the correct line. I used a theme called “Classic Theme Restorer” to emulate the features before the Quantum update and it appears to be disabled. I will have to hope that I can find an option because I am in danger of hitting a bookmark instead of a tab and losing my comment/post. But still better than the ads!!

I guess tRump will find out if “his boys” on the Supreme Court will override long-standing statutes and allow the IRS to withhold his tax returns from Congress. It is difficult at this point to know if they are just trying to run out the clock with obstruction and lawsuits until the election in the hope that he wins re-election and can go full dictator mode. Goddess help us if that happens.

The House will vote on Wednesday to hold Bill Barr in contempt for not providing the unredacted Mueller report to them. The DOJ blinked and tried to set up a meeting with Nadler for Wednesday to negotiate a compromise – he called their bs and is making them meet today so that the vote is not delayed. Assuming the contempt vote goes forward, the Supreme Court – which the berners destroyed for a generation – will decide if their Republican Party comes before the Constitution. All signs suggest that they will choose their party. The Roberts Court will go down as one of the worst in history – a court determined to destroy fair elections and undermine the delicate checks and balances that have allowed our democracy to survive. :(

    See all y’all later!

  17. Tuesday Meese.
52 here in NYS going up to 74 with rain/

Got up this morning pissed at Trump’s latest attacks on Puerto Rico – am pounding out a diary.

    bbl

  18. I didn’t get much done yesterday, will try again today. The news is, of course, horrible. If it doesn’t rain this afternoon, spending 30 minutes or so walking & listening to music would do me some good.
