Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 5th through May 11th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. It’s 58 heading for 85 in Fay., AR and sunny at the moment. Yesterday it cleared off enough that we got 19.7 KWHs and we’re starting today with a m-t-d of 90 which ain’t good but it’s still banking so it’s OK. I’ve got the washer running and as soon as it’s done I need to shut the cats up in one side of the house or the other so I can get out and hang it up without them escaping. Then all I have to do is hope there is enough line not eaten by honeysuckle to actually hang them up. It is so frustrating not to be able to deal with this stuff myself. I did my own yard work for years – and then developed allergies to just about everything out there. Now I have to depend on people who are not dependable – there are 3 separate groups who scouts’-honor promised to cut back all the stuff growing through my fence (especially the honeysuckle on the side by the clothes line) for a solid year now. They’ve done nothing but talk. Meanwhile the honeysuckle has grown from the fence over to the clothes line and now covers almost half of it. sigh. Not exactly a first world problem but not exactly not either.

    Evil Ones being evil. Folks keep looking at the media and saying “complicit” or the R party and saying “party over country” – the group that owns the media and tells it what memes to push also owns the R party and tells them what legislation & judges to put through. They’ve been working on it since 1964 when Goldwater got stomped. Nixon’s/Reagan’s/Daddy Bush’s/W’s/Twitler’s “Southern Strategy” didn’t come out of nowhere. And the appointments from Nixon forward have more and more overtly as time goes by been chosen to dismantle the government. As with climate change/global warming we’ve missed opportunity after opportunity to stop them – mostly as best I can tell because nobody seems to actually believe that we must break up that media monopoly, that RW propaganda machine, before we can make any lasting progress. Or save our country from going down the black hole into fascism. Especially because there are a whole lot of wypipo who like fascism – they just don’t want it to be called that. Can we do this? I don’t know. It may be too late. But it may not. So we keep fighting as best we can. & the biggest part of that fight right now is elections – if we still have a chance this election cycle is it.

    The washer just finished. I need to deal with the laundry but I’ll be back to read DoReMi’s post and then go to DK for Dee’s and the #Khive as soon as I’m done. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Laundry’s hung – managed to get it all out even though there was only one line of the 4 that was clear all the way down. And right on cue the clouds moved in. But the temps are going up into the 80s and that with some breeze should dry them before the newly-forecast afternoon rain moves in. Meanwhile coffee, various diaries & other online checkins – and maybe take a walk. Getting low on canned catfood anyway so a walk to the store (hour round trip) works. More {{{HUGS}}} to the Meeses.

  2. Good morning meese, 50 heading to 77 today. I’ve been scarce the last few days due to an endless parade of work crises as well as feeling overwhelmed by everything so DoReMI’s diary today is a much needed and welcome break.

    • {{{basket}}} – Healing Energy & holding you in my heart. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  3. Good morning, Moosekind, late to the party today. It’s a glorious day, with a current temp. of 58 F. in NoVa. Later the temp. will rise to 80 F., so I can break out the Bermuda shorts.

    Still very behind on all my work, but at least I’ve started the lifeguard article. I hope to go to exercise class at 11 as after today all in-house trainers will be working the Ashby Ponds Olympics.

    Today is my second day without the bp medication. Last night I enjoyed an entire night’s sleep without the aid of pills. Didn’t have leg cramps, either!

    The news continues so horrible that I don’t know what to say. Will catch up with Dee’s diary today—for now, it’s time to get dressed and write at least a couple of paragraphs on the lifeguard article.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond. The Thing in the White House does not appear to realize that aid to disaster-stricken states and territories is not a “gift,” it’s a right. May he be visited by the evil djinn during the night.

  4. Good morning, Meesefolk; 39 when I got up and going up to 54 with steady rain. I had to close my bedroom window this morning, after keeping it several inches open for the past two weeks. This is not forward progress, but I guess it’s typical Michigan spring progress.

    The disconnect I see between Twitter World and the world around me continues; while I’m working on developing an ulcer (just kidding…mostly), most people I know are tuned out and just complaining about the weather and making summer plans. They don’t believe that 45* has been vindicated, but most don’t think impeachment makes sense without access to the full Mueller report. So while I see much frothing at the mouth on Twitter, the step-by-step process being followed by the House leadership is not creating angst amongst my daily contacts.

    Good day to and for all!

  5. Good morning, 52 and sunny in Bellingham. Yesterday turned into a rest and legs up day. While days like that remain very frustrating for me I’m so fortunate that my blood clot leg still responds to such care. It’s measurably less swollen today so that’s my reward!

    My mind has taken a tRump vacation…..I open the articles and just scan and sigh. So after doing some essential desk work this morning I’m going to visit a garden shop, buy some flowers, and just generally putter around outside.

    Best wishes to all.

    • Thank Goddess for the healing power of flowers, princesspat! There are many blooming around here. It gives one such pleasure to look at them.

  6. Wednesday Meese.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 41 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 48. It is expected to rain all day as a storm system passes through. No snow, thank goodness, but very heavy rain.

    Just checking in to say: HAHAHAHAHA Trump is an epic loser! And curse the mainstream media for not vetting Trump with information that was already available to them; they have destroyed our country.

    Busy day – see all y’all later!

  8. Good Woden’s Day, Meese! It’s gray and rather blowy this morning, with showers expected off and on. In fact, it’s going to be rainy for the rest of the week, drat it: Mother’s Day will be windy and rainy, so it’s a good thing we’re not going anywhere. It would be a rotten a few days for drying laundry outdoors or collecting solar energy. The current temperature in Ashburn is 61 F., going up to 67 F.

    Lots is going to be happening on the Hill today with the contempt citations. Really glad to hear Soledad O’Brien calling out the media for their role in inflicting Thing on us: it’s about time someone did. Jeff Zucker deserves to have the evil djinn fly away with him, and as for the media, ten thousand curses on those sons of pariah dogs.

    All the plans I declare for the day never come to fruition. Just as I sat down to work last night, Dearly called me in to look at a Hurricane (the World War II British fighter, not the natural event) on TV, so I ended up watching most of the “Battle of Britain” with him. “Never has so much been owed by so many to so few” was right. Those men were real heroes.

    John Singleton (of “Boyz ‘n’ the Hood” fame), who died recently at the too-early age of 51, is the subject of today’s column by Courtland Milloy in the WaPo. Milloy went on a vegan diet January 2 under the tutelage of the owners of a vegan restaurant in Virginia. (I’ve eaten a couple of meals there.) His blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight have all dropped dramatically; he’s also experienced an increase in energy. He brings up the deaths of black celebrities like Michael Jackson and Prince, who died too soon because of unhealthful lifestyles. These deaths, like the murders of black people by trigger-happy white police officers who consider themselves to be judge, jury, and executioner, are needless.

    Plant-based diets are better for the environment as well as human health but try persuading one’s husband to switch! (He’d rather fight.) Oh, well, end of rant.

    All the best to everyone at the Pond today, and for those suffering from a surfeit of political news, let’s all try just dipping a toe into the swirling cesspool from time to time rather than focusing on it.

  9. We had severe storms last night, and more severe weather today — weather guy said there are reports of golf ball sized hail out southwest of us. And the news reports 2 floodgates are already open at the largest dam in the area. Hope it clears out this afternoon & I can get in a workout, yesterday’s was great. So, we got official word that Trump is a con man, a huuuuge loser. Well, duh — we knew he lost money on casinos.

    Anyway, music. Snow Patron have a song titled The Lightning Strike. Appropriate for a stormy day.

  10. The day started at 70 and only lightly overcast. It is now raining and the PV system has gone back into night mode. Yesterday never totally cleared off but it did enough to dry my clothes and generate 17.8 KWHs (the m-t-d is 108 and it may or may not get much higher today). The rain pushed into this morning. Late enough for a crew of I assume Mexicans (Spanish-only speakers & most of ours are from Mexico) to unload roofing materials onto the roof across the street and remove their truck from blocking my drive so my friend could get the car out and go to work. Looks like I’m gonna have a couple more fires this season after all. The temps today are supposed to stay in the upper 60s but tomorrow’s high is 60 as is Saturday’s and the lows will be in the 40s. I hauled 5 armloads of firewood onto the porch before the rain started.

    Evil Ones being evil – and either boosting of it or lying about it or both. Keeping the issues on the radar is important – but it’s also all we can do right now. That and do the groundwork to win elections. Only by winning elections – enough of them – can we actually address the evils. Puerto Rico should be (should but won’t) be an object lesson to the bern-it-down folks. Buildings in Puerto Rico that could have been repaired fairly inexpensively 18 months ago are gonna have to be razed and start over. Which is the point – the Evil Ones plan to put their resort hotels and mansions where ordinary folks houses used to be. sigh. I wish we could consolidate the plastic in the oceans to an artificial island/landmass to move them all to. Let them live out their fantasies until it kills them not us. But even though we can’t do that, it’s still up to us to stop them.

    Meanwhile I’m gonna go visit all my online site stuff early – just in case we lose power. The wind is calm right now but the forecast indicates it won’t be. Holding everybody in my heart. Hoping the rains this year are an omen of blessings and bounty that have been withheld over the last year (or two). Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  11. Good morning, 59 and partly sunny in Bellingham. I have another tending to home and garden day ahead, changing all the beds from the last family weekend, doing the resulting laundry, and some garden time as a reward for focusing on the chores! The tRump news of the day is exhausting and alarming so I’m going to try to stay partially aware.

    Best wishes to all.

  12. Good afternoon, Meesefolk; 39 when I got up (really glad I shut the bedroom window a bit yesterday) with an expected high of 61. The sun is out…sort of. It looks and feels more like glare than sunshine, but it’s not raining, so I’ll take it.

    I see 45 is going for full-blown constitutional crisis as I type; I haven’t had a chance to read more than headlines, so I’m a bit befuddled how a report that has already been made partially public can now be subject to a privilege claim. There must be more to the story, so I’ll probably use up one of my free articles to get the full story. Or maybe there isn’t? It is 45* after all.

    Good day to and for all!

  13. The Patterson column shows that some things haven’t changed – racists use hate to get votes.

  14. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 59 degrees in Madison with temperatures dropping to 54 by the afternoon. Rain this morning but at least the storms have passed through. Peeking ahead, they took the 60s off our forecast and replaced them with 50s – but NO SNOW!!

    My new plan of taking in the news in sips rather than gulps seems to be working. I find that there are several general categories of news stories but they boil down to this: we have a dysfunctional government, the press is complicit in creating the present state and spends a lot of time crying about how bad it is for them, and the only solution for us is to delay the worst of it in the courts and then take back control of our government by voting the right people in. That said, some news needs to highlighted. For example, I can’t believe that Georgia will be allowed to charge women who leave the state for legal abortions when they return but the Kavanaugh-Collins Court has not been tested on abortion rights yet. Goddess help us if that law is not stricken down. That the law was signed by a “governor” who stole the election is even more infuriating.

    Busy day (again!) here. The month of May started too soon and I am still catching up on April projects.

    See all y’all later!

  15. Thursday Meese
    45 going up to 63 here in NYS

    Woke up to read about Trump continuing to repeat his lie about 91 billion being given to Puerto Rico

    Saying this in Florida – I sure hope Democrats make a video debunking this and get it aired on a loop in FL.

    Just saw Pelosi tweeted

  16. Good Thor’s Day morning, Moosekind! It was cloudy yesterday and it’s cloudy this morning, so much so that we can only hear the planes passing over. They’re not visible at all. The current temperature in Ashburn is 59 F., going up to 75 F. There may be showers this morning. Then again, there may not. We’re up a couple of inches over normal this year for rainfall so we’re okay, but I’m sure that everyone who works is sick of constantly rainy weekends.

    The insomnia and leg cramps are no longer happening now that I’ve stopped taking that miserable Losartan. I found out how to email my doctor yesterday to tell her I’ve stopped taking it. A pharmacist I talked to the other day recommended Telmisartan, which she said wouldn’t cause insomnia but would carry a slight risk of leg cramps. I’ve got something to deal with that, though, took a tablet last night.

    Haven’t been exercising lately but I need to get back to it; also need to organize my work projects. I want to get them set up so I can have free time to write a couple of blogs and a short story.

    The news from Georgia outraged me so much yesterday I was afraid I’d have an apoplexy. I just can’t take any more bad news. Jan, your idea of “sipping” it rather than drinking it all in is a good one. Dee, NO ONE in the media is calling out his lies about Puerto Rico! Elder Son is flying to PR tomorrow morning, as it happens, to spend a few days with one of his best friends who lives there.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and Beyond—I’m thinking of the unfortunate souls in the Houston area, with all the floods. Hope everyone there is safe.

  17. We had heavy thunderstorms yesterday, but no hail or tornadoes here in town. It cleared out in the afternoon & I got in a good workout. Today, I’m going to see if the public library has Avengers Age of Ultron, so I don’t have to spend $4 to rent it from Amazon. For now, I’m eating breakfast & watching the news.

    • I’m such a huge fan of the MCU; I want to see Captain Marvel before I go to Endgame, and I can only hope I’m able to avoid the spoilers until I’ve made it to the theatre. I’d offer to mail you my copy of Ultron, but I lent it to…somebody. I should probably try to get it back, as soon as I remember who has it!

      • The library has it on dvd but they’re all out. I’m going to spring for the $4 to rent it from Amazon, and then Infinity War. Apparently Captain Marvel is still in theaters (?!) so maybe tomorrow will be a 2 movie in theater day.

  18. It’s 56 – which may or may not be the high for the day – and overcast. Not exactly raining, more a heavy mist. Very damp and chilly. I’ve got a fire going (glad I decided to build one last night – I keep forgetting that once the stove is completely cold it’s going to leak smoke at all the joins until it heats up again and yesterday evening was much better weather for having the windows open until the smoke cleared out) and it’s warming my back. Also Charlie who’s sleeping on the hearth rug spread out like he does when he’s warm instead of curled up like he does when he’s cold. Only got 4.5 KWHs yesterday and actually lucky to get that. I’m hoping we do better today though. The m-t-d of 112 isn’t on track for 500 or even 400 if we don’t start getting some sunshine.

    Evil Ones being evil and the only way to stop it is win elections. That’s it. Not easy considering that the people in power are cheating to stay in power but that simple. Whether we can pull it off or not, I don’t know, but it’s worth working our butt’s off for. Pretty much the same for global warming/climate change – and that too comes back to we have to win elections to do anything about it. Whether or not we can even once we have the power, I don’t know, but it’s even more worth working our butt’s off for.

    Slow start to the morning – cleaning up after 5 cats… – so need to check in a couple of places including finding my way to Bobby’s #Khive #Kamala2020 diary over at DK. I love seeing the folks, most of whom are my HRC-supporter family, but it also hurts because I’m a ghost – can’t interact, they can’t see or hear me. It also hurts because Hillary proposed so much of this – of course Maya was on her policy team – and just things like how good Kamala is with kids…Hillary’s so very good with kids…well, it hurts. But what is, is and we must go forward from where we are, not where we should be. sigh. Anyway. Coffee. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  19. Good morning, 55 and sunny in Bellingham. Yesterday was busy, but it’s nice to wake up to a clean house and a relatively tidy garden. My 2x’s a month housekeeper has a temporary opening in her schedule so we’ve been scheduling some special project days to do things there is normally no time for. Yesterday we started on the easily accessed windows and it’s a lift to my spirits to have the winter grime washed away.

    I have to tend to my desk this morning, and hopefully I’ll be in the garden this afternoon. Best wishes to all as we find our way through another day.

  20. Good morning, Meesefolk; 54 when I got up this morning with a high of 73 expected. I have my doubts and am wearing a sweater and a scarf to keep warm. Maybe I’m feeling the chill because it’s so cloudy, but whatever the reason, I’m definitely feeling it in my bones today. I think that makes me an Official Old Person.

    A friend who recently moved to TN is back in town, so I met her at her favorite watering hole last night and hung out for awhile. It was very noisy, with karaoke night thrown in, so I grabbed a bite, downed a Dr. Pepper, and headed home shortly thereafter. We got more conversation in when she walked with me out to my car than we did in the pub. Between sticking to pop and heading for home by 9:30, I’m pretty sure I’ve lost any hope of denying my status as Official Old Person!

    I did miss most of the news last night as a result of going out which wasn’t the worst thing in the world. I had intended to watch Rachel before I found out my friend was in the area, and I can’t say I regret missing her show. I considered putting on Lawrence while I puttered in the kitchen, but I put on the hockey game instead. I haven’t been paying attention to the playoffs at all, because when Original Six teams aren’t playing, it doesn’t interest me as much. I may start following the finals though, because it’s a welcome distraction from the Firehose.

    Good day to and for all!

    • I am an aficionado of College Softball which is in tournament play currently as well as Major League Baseball and I find watching a sporting event a great escape. The news right now is kind of in a loop – no progress is being made on so many issues. And 2020 is really too far out to get anxious about. I am cutting down on news sites I scan and will be turning my attention to a big project once the school year ends (next Friday).
