Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 12th through May 18th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 12 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 23. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Mother’s Day Sunday Meese

50 degrees and raining here in Saugerties NY and it will stay the same temp all day.

I don’t do much on Mother’s Day – I light a candle for my mom – however she is with me in spirit every day.

Thanks to the Meese who gave to Bobby’s feed street cats campaign in PR. What he is doing lifts his spirits in the midst of depression

    • I am fortunate to still have my mother and am grateful for any time we still have together.

Republicans in safe seats still have to deal with the harsh karma heading their way for voting to prop up the lies of their racist leader. May an army of fire ants take up residence in their underwear.

  3. Had a very restless night, but surprisingly less pain. Got to concentrate on eating enough food this morning to cushion the 800 mg of ibuprofen. Not going to take a muscle relaxer till later in the day, not that they really make me sleepy, but I’ll wait till I’m home for the day. Today: church & cooking for next week. Meanwhile, watching the news. They are discussing the people who work in the White House who were supposedly reigning Trump in. Elie Mystal said they weren’t protecting the country, they were in it for themselves. broke out singing the old Meatloaf song: “I would to anything for [Trump], but I won’t do that”. It was great.

For me, there’s only one song today: California

    I’ve seen for myself
    There’s no end to grief
    That’s how I know
    That’s how I know
And why I need to know that there is no end to love
All I know and all I need to know is there is no end to love

  4. It’s 50 and might make it to upper 60s – especially since the sun is out, at the moment anyway. I’ve got a fire going but this may actually be the last of the season. I hope. I’ve already cleaned out the stove “for the season” once already. Only got 5.75 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 146 but if it stays sunny…Live in hope and all that. Next week’s forecast is mid 70s to mid 80s with overnights in the low 60s starting Wednesday. My kind of weather. heh.

Evil Ones being evil is of course deplorable – but expected. The supposed “libruls” who’ve been doing twitler’s work for him by making anti-Indigenous hashtags go viral – well, I’ve said for years LW=RW only differing in the old white male they want to rule us. What’s so effin’ hard about if a Native tells you a word or phrase or name or cartoon or hashtag is offensive then it is. Stop defending it and FFS stop using it! sigh. Ditto Black folks, Asian Americans, Latinx folks – whoever. double sigh. That’s one of the reasons I keep saying that to win elections, which we seriously need to do, we need to do precinct-level organizing and get the “my vote doesn’t count” folks to the polls. LW=RW in not voting Dem too. We need to make up for those votes with non-voters and noobs.

    I’m expecting a phone call from my son about possibly doing brunch at an Indian restaurant in town (if they’re open today) so I’d best check in everywhere and get back to my Sunday chores. When I’ve got fires I have to use the manual broom rather than the little electric broom. The latter can handle cat fluff if I clean the filter between the front & back of the house but it can’t handle wood chips and other heavy stuff. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good morning, 55 and partly sunny in Bellingham. Mom’s Day is a memory filled day, and a day to be in the moment as well. I’m listening to Chopin Etudes now, thinking of my mom and grandmother, but soon I’ll be talking to my daughters and preparing dinner with my sons. A full life and I’m very grateful.

Best Mom’s Day wishes to all.

  6. Minda Meese

51 and raining here in Saugerties NY

Please find some time to download and read the full Russian election interference report

    Puerto Rico

  7. Some of the memes used by Russia’s Internet Research Agency to manipulate Black voters

    • Sigh. How hard was/is it for them (the targets of that propaganda) to understand Black folks not voting is exactly what white supremacists have been working on since Reconstruction ended? double sigh.

  8. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 34 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 64. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

I was “news lite” for a few days and it looks like I did not miss much. Mayo Pete is still crying about “identity politics” because he can’t attract anyone but privileged white people to support him. That’s the problem, doofus!! We don’t have a “crisis of belonging” we have a crisis of the people in power not giving a rat’s ass about those who are not like you. The sooner he drops out, the better. We need to start winnowing the field so that we can see who the second tier of candidates really are.

I had an interesting “discussion” with my Republican family over the weekend and it sounds like the right-wing media is pushing the idea that the Bernie Sanders agenda is the Democratic Party agenda. I am not sure that we will ever get their votes (they are hardcore) but if that is the theme they are running on, they will be in trouble once they realize that he is only polling 12%. I think that is why Joe Biden scares the crap out of the Republicans – his past policy priorities that bother a lot of Democrats are actually ones that appeal to right-leaning independents who are scared of too much change. And as I have said in the past, calling single-payer “Medicare for All” was the most ignorant thing Democrats could have done. All it has done is scare low-information or Fox-information people into thinking that everyone will get Medicare and it will drain the system – that same scare tactic about the ACA wiped out our House majority in 2010 and our failure to learn from that is leading us into another buzzsaw. “Hands off my health care” won us the House in 2018 – let’s not screw that up by scaring people with big plans to redo health care coverage.

    See all y’all later!

  9. Ugh, it is early. Last week was really nice, so quiet & lazy. Back to normal now. Breakfast, tea. Making sure I eat & drink enough for the 800 mg of ibuprofen. Going to use City of Blinding Lights to give me energy today.

  10. Good Moon Day morning, Meese. Yesterday it rained incessantly, so it was nice not to have to go out. Today is yet another gloomy gray day. It’s 46 F. in Ashburn, so we have the little fake fire in the fake woodstove going. It’s raining now and probably will rain all day. It’s not supposed to be 46 F., going up to 58 F., in May! Perhaps the climate is weeping over the intransigence of the Rethugs on the Hill.

Yesterday we watched most of the Barcelona Grand Prix before going to the Mother’s Day Buffet down the hall at the restaurant. It was quite nice—there were vases of fresh flowers placed on the glossily starched tablecloths, with pink linen table napkins folded into pyramids—and the food was decent. After that we staggered back to our flat and basically slept the afternoon away until Younger Son and 3/4 of the family stopped by. (Miss Pink Cheeks was attending a birthday party.)

Today Dearly Beloved plans to continue looking for a new (used) car and I shall stay home and nurse this dratted cold. My organ of outrage at the rank deeds of the Rethugs is limp and exhausted.

Wishing a good day to all at Pond and Beyond!

    • This morning’s headlines were filled with stories screaming that “other Democratic candidates are popular in California!” and suggesting that the fund raising success that Kamala’s primary rivals are having there is a bad news for her. Sheesh! There is plenty of money to go around and there are more donors sitting out the early primary than leaping in. Controversy=Clickbait when there is no real news.

  11. Depending on the widget checked, it’s either 47 or 52 and going up to either 72 or 75 – but it’s sunny and while a fire would feel nice right now it’s not necessary and it will be downright uncomfortable (even for me) by midafternoon – especially if I do any baking which I’m planning to do. (Out of cookies.) Yesterday we got 18.5 KWHs and the m-t-d is 164 so still banking if not on track for the over-500 target.

I noticed a water spot, more like a small blotch, on the ceiling over the weekend. sigh. Means there’s a leak, hopefully small, in the roof – but heaven knows how much water my attic insulation soaked up before that small amount made its way through to the ceiling. double sigh. Anyway I’ve got a report in to my insurance company and the adjuster is supposed to contact me today or tomorrow. I’m in so much better a situation than Bobby I feel 1st-world elitist even mentioning it. But it has to be fixed before it does more damage. This house and it being paid off is why I can not only live comfortably on my Social Security but can also help others. I can’t help as many or as much as I can when I’m working but that I help at all – or could even afford to retire – is almost completely due to owning this house. So I need to take care of it.

    I’m in the midst of grilling (electric grill) breakfast sausages – about 5 weeks’ worth – which makes the house smell good. But cookies will make it smell better. LOL. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  12. Good morning, Meesefolk; a rainy 43 when I got up this morning, with an expected rainy high of 50. The bad news is this is May, dammit, and the high should be higher; the good news is that it’s a light rain? I’m glad I haven’t retired my winterwear for the season yet, although when I go see the Kiddo this weekend, I may go into shock since their projected high is in the 80s.

It must have been the weekend for water in the house; my washer experienced what can only be described as catastrophic failure and flooded my laundry room. Fortunately it happened after the most necessary laundry was done, because it looks like we’re going to be taking up the floor, putting in a new subfloor and floor, and only then getting a new washer. I use the term “we” loosely, since with my travel plans, I suspect my only contribution will be going to the laundromat until a new washer arrives. That seems like a noble enough sacrifice, because I don’t know of anyone who enjoys going to a laundromat. At any rate, if anything political happened this weekend, I probably missed it because sorting out the mess was our priority.

Good day to and for all!

  13. Good morning, 54 and partly sunny in Bellingham. My weekend was busy and fun with family, cooking, gardening, and GOT. But today will be quiet because my legs are demanding a day off. I’ll get to my desk soon but now I’m listening to the new Over The Rhine cd and playing solitaire.

Best wishes to all on this Monday morning.

  14. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 46 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 70. Sunny skies are in the forecast. We are almost to perfect weather – cool mornings, warm days but NOT over 75. It won’t last long, we will start to heat up fairly soon but I am requesting a couple of weeks. :)

It is starting to look as though another Republican president will saddle us with another unwinnable war. The fever dream of John Bolton, Lindsey Graham, and Tom Cotton to attack Iran sounds like it is well into the planning stages. I hope that this time around, Democrats don’t sign onto it like they did with Afghanistan and Iraq – we can’t run against the endless wars when we vote to allow them. Will the young people in 2020 be as energized as the young people in 2008 to vote against the war party? We shall see!

The Susan Collins Court is tipping their hand as to what they will do with Roe v Wade when one of the onerous fetal heartbeat bills reaches them. Yesterday they disposed of 40 years of precedent, they can dispose of 46 years of precedent without even breaking into a sweat. To Democrats, this should be a wakeup call – not to try to save the courts, they are gone – to take back the states and pass strong protections at the state level for women’s reproductive rights and civil rights. The deification of the Supreme Court and the stupidity of believing that “settled law” is more than just a code word to get Democrats to ignore the record and demeanor of the justices they are confirming is a self-inflicted wound. I wish some of the people running for president would run for Senator. I understand that the white male governor of another Trump state is going to throw his Stetson hat into the ring. He plan is to show us how to appeal to racists to get them to vote for Democrats. No thank you, we don’t want them. If you appeal to racists you are a racist because condoning it is an act of racism. If we get to the point where we need Montana to win the presidency, we have already lost.

    See all y’all later!

  15. Tuesday Meese. 49 and raining all day here in Saugerties NY.

    Puerto Rico

  16. Warmer morning than yesterday — I didn’t need a sweater. At least there’s no rain expected till the weekend. Farmers are having a hard time. I hope it didn’t hurt the peaches. Anyway, another way-too-early morning. Breakfast, tea. 800 mg of ibuprofen. Back feels ok, but I’m not taking any chances. Gonna use another upbeat, energetic song today: Empress.

    Sound and pulse and volume
Hands just reaching out for hands
    This is almost overload
    I said almost overload
    Friends and foes and princes
Are all just human in the end
This is so damn simple, yeah
    It's so damn simple

  18. Good Tuesday morning, Moosekind! It was a lovely, sunny morning when I woke up a little before 7 (the cold pills knocked me out last night), but now the sky is pregnant with heavy, dark rain clouds. Enough already! Rain is good, yes, but I wish we could have a chance to dry out. The current temp. in Ashburn is 46 F., going up to 58 F. Uh…is this spring? Lemme check rill quick. It’s more like mid-March than mid-May.

Same old, same old here. Same old cold. Well, not quite the same old with regard to politics—he’s starting a war to deflect attention from his high crimes and misdemeanors? Oh, thanks so much. Having ruined Puerto Rico, the farmers, the ill, and our IRAs, he’s onward and downward to deeper depths.

I can’t believe that PayPal thinks Puerto Rico is a “foreign country” and is returning our donations to Bobby Neary’s fund to save homeless animals! How STUPID can people get? First, they didn’t want their children taught “Arabic numerals,” and now this? (Note to self: How did these cretins get out of high school? Did Hollywood stars contribute millions for them to get their diplomas?)

Darling Niece is supposed to come for lunch today. We’ll have it at the Deli here. Our flat looks like a wreck because we cleaned out the trunk and glove compartment of our car and now the contents are sitting around in bags until we figure out what to do with it all. Dearly Beloved is still bound and determined to find another new (used) car.

Other than that, nothing new here. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and beyond!

    • Just a small point of clarification: GoFundMe and WePay are the geographically-illiterate offenders; PayPal is the solution.

    • {{{Diana} – Not PayPal – they’re golden (at least for this) – it’s the GoFundMe and their payer WePay. WePay is the payer for most if not all of the crowd-sourced fundraising platforms. They are also the people who shut down Aji’s fundraiser on the YouCaring platform for the last phase of building their home. She/we had to raise the last $30K via PayPal and snail-mail paper checks. PayPal has it’s problems but they’re the good guy in Bobby’s case.
