Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 16th through June 22nd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 52 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 66. Showers are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Happy Father’s Day Sunday Meese
65 and raining here in Saugerties NY, going up to 72

  3. All I did yesterday was grocery shopping. Today is church & cooking. Currently watching the MSNBC morning show. I should try to get to the gym.

  4. It’s 66 heading for 78 and who knows if the sun will come out at all today. We did get 13.8 KWHs yesterday bringing the m-t-d to 265 – so still making more than I’m using (haven’t turned the A/C on yet) but not on track for the 500 goal. I’m trying to get the energy up to do my Sunday chores. Everybody (including me) has had breakfast & the dishes have been washed but just looking at the floors with their layers of cat fluff, cat toys, and whatever the Twins have knocked over lately makes me want to go back to bed. sigh. And I need to grill my breakfast sausages which is always a messy job. double sigh. But eating is a good thing and the floors will do nothing but get worse if I don’t at least remove a layer. Meanwhile I’ll check my internet stuff – try not to think about the evil stuff I can’t do anything about and just makes me sick/too depressed to move – and maybe find some music I can stand to listen to this early in the morning. Light the day, Meeses.

  5. Good morning, 60 and partly sunny in Bellingham. I’m listening to the new Bruce Springsteen cd, Western Stars and remembering my father and my grandfather on this Father’s Day morning. My dil’s parent’s are hosting an all family barbecue later this afternoon so a nostalgic day will end with family fun.

Best wishes to all on this sunny Sunday.

  6. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 55 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 72. The forecast calls for mostly sunny skies.

It is difficult to believe that Friday is already Summer Solstice! June moved too fast; before you know it, kids will be going back to school.

Lindsey Graham and Tom Cotton would like a “nice” little war for the United States to prove its manliness. Sigh. I am going to guess that the American people have no appetite for endless war and even the trumpers might balk at that. I hope Democrats don’t fall for this administration’s ginned up war; voting for George W. Bush’s Iraq War is a blemish on the souls of those who were scared to be seen as “soft” if they were unwilling to wave America’s dick at (select) Middle East tyrants. Barack Obama won on his anti-war stance and another generation of voters stands ready to punish those who send their sons and daughters to war.

People should not read the polls and they should definitely not read the polls that say that Generic Democrat will beat Donald Trump in 2020. Polls led people to believe that Hillary Clinton had the 2016 election in the bag and their staying home – or wasting their vote on purity positions – gave us Trump. I am 100% certain America will not survive a second Trump term.

I am going to run the WordPress upgrade to 5.2.1 later this afternoon after everyone checks in. The Moose’s UPDATE NOW screaming banner is bugging me and that release has been out long enough to be vetted (I hope). Maybe it will fix some of the security issues that require us to clear cache more frequently – or maybe I will remove the caching and let the site be slower but cleaner. Anyway, I can’t worry about it this morning as I have a project that I can’t delay any longer that has to get out the door.

    See all y’all later!

  7. Good Monday Meese.

65 going up to 77 here in NYS.

    Puerto Rico

Please take a few minutes to watch this:

  8. At work, hoping my voice will work today. Was ok yesterday at church, but there’s not that much talking involved, and only 3 songs. I have some Throat Coat tea, will try that if the voice tries to go again. Saw that John Oliver was trending — he made a strong case for impeachment hearings. Youtube made me a long mix of Snow Patrol songs, I’ll listen to them & sing along, warming up my voice for today.

    • I was reading that 60 House Democrats are on record as being in favor of starting impeachment hearings. That is not a majority, obviously, so there is a ways to go. No one wants to run in 2020 on impeachment – they would rather run on health care and voting rights, repairing the shredded safety net, the minimum wage, college loans, and honest government.

  9. Fascinating – one of my weather widgets says it’s -13. The one that’s working says it’s 66, humid, and overcast. Which it is. We’re heading for mid 70s with random/scattered thunderstorms. I do hope those finish up by noon as they did yesterday. We got 20.9 KWHs bringing the m-t-d to 286 – if it clears off this afternoon we could reach 300 today.

News and twitter are getting more and more toxic. They’re doing an unfortunately stellar job of dividing folks who should be united against twitler and the genocidal old party – and everybody’s being emotional about it and not thinking things through. The one that totally throws me the most is the insistence on the impossible – that we must impeach to remove twitler from office – because according to them the possible – that we beat him (again) in an election – isn’t going to happen. Sigh. So I hit my TL a couple of times a day and stay mostly in my mentions, check Aji’s page and sometimes a few others, and boost tweets I see elsewhere (like here). Someday, if we are ever to get out of this mess, we have to break up the media monopoly – go back to regulations on how much market share any given entity is allowed to have, get some real competition back into news as well as other programing.

    I’m trying reconnect with the Dem Party folks. I thought we had everything lined up for me to do data input for them but I haven’t gotten any of the data to input. Also trying to connect with the handyman to get quotes for the various jobs. I need to set priorities – and also budget where the money needs to go v. where I’d like it to go. So. For now I’ll tour the internets and see about coffee. Light the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  10. Good morning, Meesefolk; 57 when I got up with an expected high of 72. I’m wearing a sweater to work again, because although there’s no rain in the forecast, there is also no sun. Tomorrow is supposed to be much warmer (and no rain again!), so I may finally be able to break out actual summer clothes. A friend made the observation that we’re all waiting for the weather to turn the corner, but this may be it. We can probably expect a bit warmer (like tomorrow’s 77), but expecting dryer at this point is probably waiting in vain. It’s a realistic assessment, so I need to start readjusting my thinking. I can’t spend every weekend lounging around doing nothing because of the non-stop rain (but I have no regrets about having my lazy weekend). Of course, readjusting my thinking may also include some more pragmatic steps, like buying scuba flippers for my new gardening shoes…

Have to get back to work; my hopes for a slow day were in vain. Good day to and for all!

  11. Site updated to WordPress 5.2.1 at 10:45am CDT. Cache plugin updated and cache cleared.

    Fingers crossed!

  12. Tuesday Meese

Raining and 71, going up to 73 here in Saugerties NY.

    Full bore socialism?

    • Good Tuesday morning, Meese! Can’t believe I haven’t been here for two days. Jan, thank you for updating the site. Got in this morning with no trouble at all. Currently we’re recovering from a night of thunderstorms and heavy rain. It’s not raining at the moment but will later, so They Say. At present we have a steamy 68 F. with partly cloudy skies, going up to 91 F. by noon.

Miss Pink Cheeks was delivered here, along with her violin, board game, and stuffed animals, at 1 p.m. on Saturday. There went the weekend! On Sunday I had to cook three breakfasts (everyone wants something different), shop at Trader Joe’s for three different lunches, and then prepare for a barbecue at Elder Son’s house.

We took Monty, as boarding him at the dog hotel is very expensive, and at first all went well. Miss Pink Cheeks entertained us with musical selections on her violin, all of them quite recognizable. Mr. Preschooler, however, clapped his hands over his ears and howled, “ENOUGH!” Even that wasn’t so bad but when the “hamberders” were placed on the dining room table, Monty and Hudsie got into a snarling fight that ended when Elder Son grabbed Monty and put him outside on the deck. This cast something of a pall on the proceedings.

Yesterday was the first day of Grandparent Chauffeur duty, so we left here at 9, again with Monty, to drive Miss Pink Cheeks to Art Camp. As we had a lot of errands to do in that neighborhood, I negotiated a bath, nail trim, and teeth-brushing for Monty. He stayed at the groomer’s most of the day as they couldn’t work on him right away, so I picked him up after retrieving Miss PC from Art Camp. Monty howled his displeasure at the sight of us, causing us to decamp hastily. The minute we left the groomer’s the heavens opened, raining all over his newly shampooed and conditioned fur coat. He spent the rest of the day curled up in pained silence on the sofa.

So that’s that. This morning there’s an appointment with the audiologist, a Kamala diary to write, shopping and cooking to do, Miss Pink Cheeks to pick up from Art Camp, and a farewell cocktail party to attend for the people next door. They’re going to their summer house in New York for the next four months.

The news is too depressing for words. His latest ploy is to talk about a “new health care plan to replace Obamacare,” which he’ll “reveal in the next few weeks.” Ha! He is so utterly vile. His main mission is to completely undo every single achievement of our previous well-loved, intellectual, highly accomplished president. I hope the racist slug gets exactly what he deserves—death by hamberder.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  13. I made it through a whole 8 hour work day yesterday! And I went to the gym. Yay, me. Brought my gym stuff today, and I really need to go, since I have my Democratic club meeting tomorrow. Oh, weather — this is Texas, it’s hot & getting hotter. Technically hasn’t hit 100 yet. Listening to Empress, for the happy energy.
So standing in the steady throng of restless hope
You don’t feel like an outcast anymore
And something deep inside of you has waken up
And you know that nothing’s gonna be the same again
    And on the streets
You can see for what seems miles
    Because in your heart
You know they feel like you do
    Sound and pulse and volume
Hands just reaching out for hands
    This is almost overload
    I said almost overload
    Friends and foes and princes
Are all just human in the end
This is so damn simple, yeah
    It’s so damn simple

  14. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 57 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 73. Cloudy this morning and then a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. I am glad the sky was clear to see the full moon last night and the fullish moon this morning, There is something very comforting about seeing her and being surrounded by her light.

I only have time for a quick scan of the news this morning as I am working on client computer updates. As I was looking at dozens of Windows 10 computers over the past week or so, it struck me that the Windows 10 startup screens are images of nature. What if someone hates nature and mountains and oceans and trees? I cannot imagine such a thing but I wonder if they have a Rush Limbaugh option, the ability to see only chopped down trees, maybe ducks covered in oil, mountaintops cut off, creeks befouled?

War with Iran? I am curious to find out how popular it is with people not named Lindsey Graham and Tom Cotton.

Today is the big tRump re-election kickoff. It seems a bit early in the election cycle but not unexpected since the thing that drives him more than anything is attention and the attention lately has been on the 2020 Democrats. I will make sure I know when the rally starts so I can avoid Twitter and not let it soil by beautiful mind! :)

    See all y’all later!

  15. Good morning, Meesefolk; 61 when I finally rolled out of bed this morning (grudgingly) with a cloudy high of 77 today. It’s not supposed to rain, but as of right now, the skies are so completely overcast, it’s hard to believe there’s no rain coming today. The rest of the week…more rain. I need to work harder at adjusting my thinking so that I don’t find the daily recitation about rain in the forecast quite so depressing.

I had Rachel on in the background last night, but I switched off the tv when Tweety came on with his decisionmakers townhall in Dayton. Apparently this was #2 in a series he’ll be doing over time, featuring voters in districts that are split nearly 50-50. The Dayton-area district was twice an Obama district–barely–and went to Individual One in 2016–also barely. I’m glad I turned it off, because apparently it was just another opportunity for tRumpsters to proclaim their devotion, despite knowing that he’s a pathological liar. So that’s ok, as well as having concentration camps. And wagging the dog by threatening a war with Iran. And tanking the economy. And encouraging Nazis. Just another day; today’s hate rally should bring us more.

Good day to and for all!

  16. It seems to be high 60s but it’s clammy with the humidity. Picked up my blueberries for winter this morning. There are now 6 gallons in the freezer – that I won’t even start tapping until the Market closes after Thanksgiving. Another 5 gallons went elsewhere – basically to my friend/neighbor across the street and to the office as several faculty members (all women, hmmm) tag in on the annual “farm price” order. And bless the man, there was half a gallon left in the flat he built my order from and he just gave them to me. So that’s my fresh fruit for the next week or so. (A gallon of blueberries is right at 6.5 lbs.) Meanwhile we’ve got sunshine today which is very nice. Maybe I’ll manage to get a walk in today. Didn’t yesterday as every time I thought about it the skies clouded over. We managed to get 11 KWHs yesterday which is not really good for this time of year – less than half what a sunny day produces. The m-t-d with this morning’s driblet is 298 – should reach 300 by noon. If the day stays as sunny as it’s started we might even reach 320 by the end of the day.

Evil Ones being evil. Pushing every button they can find to push. I’m seriously thinking the Rs want us to impeach twitler right now – and hand him over to the senate for a very public acquittal. I know the arguments from our team for doing it. I disagree strongly. No, we won’t be holding him or anybody else accountable or telling any of the evil ones that evil had consequences they wouldn’t like. We’d be setting ourselves up for that same scenario where the teenage white $hit$ were harassing the Native Elder who was de-escalating what could have turned into a rather nasty fight/riot. We’d get harassed, they’d giggle about it and have no serious consequences whatsoever – and be defended by all the normally quiet about it WASP supremacists. Unless/until we have the power to not only impeach along party lines but to remove from office (along with many of the administration including pence) they are the winners if we impeach. This has nothing to do with “strategy” or “electability” – it has to do with not handing a crime boss over to his cousins whose mortgage he holds for trial. Not only that – twitler is a figurehead. Get rid of him and nothing changes except for the nasty not-quite-sane tweets – and the publicity. Concentration camps will still be built and filled. Kids will still be caged until they die or can become the merchandise in the white Xtian savior adoption ring. Puerto Rico – or any other disaster area – will get no help. Roe will be overturned. Public lands will be mined to greater enrich wealthy corporations. We’ll double down on global warming. And quite probably we’ll start a war with Iran. And we won’t hear about any of it as the never-trumpers calm down to “business as normal. We have to take down the whole party. Nothing less will do it.

    Meanwhile I’ve got some errands to run today so I need to do my internetting, get some coffee, and get to it. Holding everybody in my heart. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  17. The last chance to see this in theatres is the 19th; it’s easy to search for a location using the ZIP code search at the website. I’m not sure why it only has/had two days in theatres; I’m hoping I can get out of work in time tomorrow to make it to the theatre to see it.
