Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 30th through July 6th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Friday that will feel like a Sunday …

It is 72 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 86. Sunny skies all day with the threat of thunderstorms overnight.

Lots of neighborhood fireworks, unhappy dog, unhappy me!

I was glad to see that the Occupant’s Fourth of July gala was a washout. The TV images will not be suitable for campaign video clips and all he really did was emphasis how dotardly he is. That 60 million people in America think that he is presidential is beyond me. He is gross and they are ignorant.

I am going to give the rest of the news a pass.

    See all y’all later!

  2. Good morning, Moosekind! We just finished breakfast here in our comfortable hotel room and are preparing to drink covfefe. It’s sunny this morning in Williamsburg, with a temperature of 75 F. It’s expected to rise to 90 F. with thunderstorms this afternoon. It’ll be like this tomorrow as well.

Have been sitting here laughing at some of the tweets about yesterday. Re Thing saying that “our military” took over the airports in the Revolutionary War: one tweet shows Paul Revere galloping on a horse screaming, “British Airways is coming! British Airways is coming!”

Have the laptop with me, of course, otherwise I would’t be able to check in. Younger Son and his family, across the hall from us, are evidently still asleep. Miss Pink Cheeks might want to visit Colonial Williamsburg with us today.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  3. Slept in, watching Savage Builds — new show from one of the Mythbusters guys. They’re talking about the bad things that would happen if the build goes wrong, standing next to the 400 lb steel wheel….. Today’s plan: housework & the gym. From what I saw on the news, there were more people at the DC event than I would have thought, given the weather. When I opened a tab for youtube for some music, I saw that there’s a new thing from the Liberal Redneck about yesterday’s event.

  4. Low 70s and muggy as all get out. I’ve closed up the house already hoping I don’t have to turn on the A/C – rain chance is only 25% but it’s certainly looking and acting like it’s gonna. We can use it. Ground’s so hard you can’t pull a weed or drive a shovel into it. Aji can use it more of course – they need rain for a 2nd cutting of hay to see the horses through next winter without them having to buy it (at top dollar) – but we humans are not given the power to manage the rain. Probably just as well. Yesterday we got 18.9 KWHs and our m-t-d is 70.8 – still on track for that 500. What we get today, as always, depends on how much sun we get today. This isn’t a promising start.

Deplorables turned out for Deplorable-In-Chief which is not surprising. Just shows both how fanatic they are and how small their numbers are relative to the whole. We outnumber the evil ones. We have to overwhelm them at the polls. Simple to say, not simple to do. As with impeachment, it takes planning and resources. I keep likening it to Overlord – folks who haven’t read history don’t realize (or don’t want to realize) the planning for the Normandy landing started in 1940 – and orders from Britain to US manufacturing for landing craft started by late 1941. So we plan and we work. And pray. Because the lives of folks in Puerto Rico, of the families at the border, of anybody anywhere there’s a natural disaster, of any woman anywhere, any BIPOC anywhere, are at stake on this. Americans have always been lousy at preventing disasters – but at least we’ve always been pretty good at responding to them. So I pray the response will be good enough.

Meanwhile it’s dark enough the street lights came back on – although my PV system is still on (barely) which surprises me as it usually shuts down when the street lights are on. I think I need some coffee. Bright the day, Meeses. (((HUGS)))

  5. Good morning, 59 and raining in Bellingham. Our 4th barbecue was relaxing and fun, but we couldn’t stay awake for fireworks. Fortunately I’ve got a quiet morning before we catch the ferry to Port Townsend. And fortunately we have a reservation because on holiday weekends the ferry lines are long. The reservation system involves planning, but imho it’s best to know we won’t be waiting in line for hours with no guarantee of being on the boat.

Best wishes to all on this rainy day.

  6. Good morning, Meesefolk; 75 when I got up this morning with a high of 90. Blergh. At least I’m at work with air conditioning; Hubby is home, and I suspect he’ll spend most of the day sitting in front of the fan with occasional ice cream breaks. (That’s certainly what I would be doing if I was at home.)

I picked up my new-to-me car after work on Wednesday, and I’m a bit embarrassed at how excited I am. I thought I was pretty chill about the whole thing, but the minute I was handed the keys I was transformed into a kid with a new toy. In my entire life, I’ve never owned a car that was all about what I wanted. I’ve always had the “hand me down” car, or the car purchased as the family car, or in the case of the last car, the car that we thought we were helping Kiddo to purchase until we discovered it was a manual, a detail the dealer forgot to mention (then it became mine, and we sold Kiddo the hand me down car I had expected to drive). When Kia came out with the Soul in 2009, I announced to my family that it was my dream car: reasonably priced, tons of cargo space, and fun (because who can look at a car driven by hip hop hamsters and not think “fun”?). It took 10 years (or 40 years of car buying), but here I am. I did discover this morning that I’m going to have to keep a close eye on things for awhile. It’s so peppy that I found myself going 10 miles over the speed limit without realizing it. I’m also going to have to keep an eye on Hubby; even though he has a Soul of the same year, his is the base model while mine is one step up. He likes my seats better and my engine more. The level of coveting he’s displaying has me thinking I may have to hide the extra key!

I should be finished bubbling about my car and getting back to politics soon. But until that time, good day to and for all!

    • This! “It’s so peppy that I found myself going 10 miles over the speed limit without realizing it. ” I had repairs done to my 15 year old car last month (a tune up and fixing an exhaust problem that made it LOUD) and it ended up running so smoothly and so quietly, I couldn’t sense how fast I was going and caught myself speeding! Be careful – especially since you got the red cop-magnet car. :)

  7. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 73 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 77. Rain expected this morning then clearing later in the afternoon. There will be a slight break in the heat for a few days.

The census question lawsuits got a big boost as the blatherer-in-chief once again said the quiet parts out loud suggesting that the citizenship question is important for “redistricting.” Districts have always counted everyone (except Native people and less than a unit of one for slaves) regardless of citizenship because the allocation of resources and representation is by people, period. But no one would expect #DonaldDotard to know that – he has no interest in learning anything that does not pertain to his own feelies. The judge in Maryland expanded the case to include equal protection issues related to discrimination based on the emails of the question’s author while the DOJ filed a brief saying, in essence, that they needed more time to come up with a new lie for why the question is needed. They wanted discovery to be suspended and Judge Hazel would have none of it. Another example of how terrible it is what the Republican Party has done to the court system and a reminder of how our democracy will not survive another four years of packing the federal courts with lifetime appointments for the unqualified mouth-breathers selected by the Federalist Society. :(

I have two more days of this long weekend and I am trying to put together a plan for using it productively. I know I will wake up on Monday morning wishing I had done more to get ahead of projects – because I know me! – but I will at least build the list.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Saturday Meese. 79 going up to 86 here in Saugerties NY.

Speaking of my town – the ugly is everywhere

  9. Slept in, watching the news & Le Tour. Last year’s champion (actually, Froome’s won several times in recent years) was in a terrible accident while training & isn’t riding this year. The rider from Austin (Haga) wasn’t picked to ride this year, but the other Texan (Craddock) is riding. Favorite thing about July, even with only 4 Americans in. Also really great that when the news plays a Trump clip, I have something to change channels to.

  10. It was 65 at dawn and only 70 now – after yesterday’s dark morning it cleared off enough to give us 16.3 KWHs (m-t-d 87.3) then out of nowhere a rain squall blew in – dropped the temps 15 degrees along with .11″ of actual water. I’m hoping it softened the ground a bit. I need to get some fresh grass in for the kitties which I dig up out of the yard when the yard is diggable and put in a large plant saucer on the porch. Need to do it soon though. We’re heading for 90 with who knows what heat index today.

Evil Ones being evil. They enjoy it, get their jollies from it. We cannot deal with this evil until we get rid of enough Rs in power to do so. We can – and I hope are – slow it down a bit. Save a few lives here and there. But to stop the genocide, because that’s what it is, and close the concentration camps will take having at least both houses of Congress – and it will be easier if we have the WH too. Twitler is the “fall guy” and McConnell is giving cover to all the Rs in the Senate by not bringing anything up for a vote where their records would sink them but no mistake – it’s all of them. January 2021 is a long way off and people are being tortured and dying right now – it’s so very frustrating/enraging that there is no magic instant answer. It’s so very depressing to know that if we don’t win those elections a lot more people will be tortured and die. As well as our republic drop totally into the “not free” category, the “noble experiment” fail. So we work to win those elections. And do what we can, send what we can, for those who are trapped in Deplorable Hell right now.

    I just got back from the Farmers Market. Peaches and cherry tomatoes. Now I need coffee. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
