Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 28th through Aug. 3rd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 68 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 86. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. It was 66 at dawn, 69 now, and heading for upper 80s with who knows on the heat index. Sunny at the moment. We got 20.5 KWHs yesterday bringing the m-t-d to 497.5 – we should reach 500 by noon if the sun stays out. W00T!!! We’ve already generated more this year than in ’16 and ’18 – so now let’s see if we can beat ’17 (542) and/or ’15 (561). ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ‘ Meanwhile Murf is eating more or less enough – still only Kitten Chow – but only a couple of bites at a time and only as long as his bowl is next to my chair while I’m sitting at the computer. I think the boyo would really like to be in a one-kitty household but there’s not much I can do about that. sigh. The Twins are running through the house and the adults are napping. Oh, it would be nice to be a cat in my household. heh.

Twitler being Twitler. Of course he’s attacking BIPOC – and mostly not attacking white folks. He only attacks white folks in response to something the white person in question said about him. He attacks BIPOC for existing. And the fascists who put him in power, the ones who own 90% of MSM and 100% of the R party, are delighted he’s being such a good squirrel. Everybody reacts to him – and forgets to watch the rest. Forgets to watch for more concentration camps – especially those in remote areas that could easily become death camps. Forgets to watch the Senate rapidly packing the fed Courts at all levels so they can complete the fascist takeover they’ve been working on since Goldwater got stomped and LBJ signed CRA and VRA. And of course forgets to watch Moscow Mitch block all the bills the Dem House has sent to the Senate. That’s a win-win for the fascists. Nothing actually gets passed, no Rs except Moscow Mitch get blamed for that, and the LW as well as the RW can continue trashing Dems in general and Nancy Pelosi in particular for being a “do nothing” House. But heavens, Twitler is better than the Red Dot for keeping all the attention on him/it while they fulfill their evil and treasonous agenda.

Goddess, I hope Kamala addresses the Native issues. She was invited to do so by one of the Native groups – and said she’d had to do some research. I hope that’s not just a fob-off. Castro’s been working with Native leaders and has a set of plans. Maybe that will encourage her to do the same – although I wish she’d been first. I love everything she’s doing – at least as best I know – for everybody in the whole wide world except Natives – but “sins of omission” can be worse than “sins of commission” and she’s already got some of the latter in regards to Natives that’s she’s making worse with the former at the moment.

    I don’t know why I’m tired. It’s early and still relatively cool. Definitely cool for July. (Taking care of 5 cats…) I found a sheetcake pan – heaven knows where that came from – and am seeing if I get a better texture on the pumpkin muffin-bread I’m baking than with the regular cake pans. Doing soured milk instead of yogurt this time. Didn’t have enough molasses and had to augment with brown sugar. I do hope these are edible. Baking is the only of my Sunday chores I’ve done. So I need coffee. Maybe do a quick once over of the internet. Then back to work. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  3. Watching the news โ€” Le Tour isn’t on till afternoon today. Got tea steeping, this afternoon I need to see how much I have in the freezer for lunch next week. I went to the gym yesterday, maybe will again today. Church will be interesting โ€” the sermon series on musicals continues, and our wooden floors are being refinished, so they told us to wear clothes that can get dusty.

Since the news just did a segment on the Puerto Rico protests โ€” also mentioning Moscow & Hong Kong โ€” Iโ€™ll post Nina Cried Power.

    itโ€™s not the wakinโ€™, itโ€™s the risinโ€™

  4. Good morning, 63 and partly sunny in Bellingham. My sister went to the quilt show with me yesterday and it was fun to textile works of art with her. I especially enjoyed seeing the technical aspects of piecing and sewing, and as an artist she noted composition and use of color. So we had fun sharing our viewing experience. Afterwards we went to a great used bookstore. It’s a labyrinth of tall shelves full of books and a few antiques. I found a perfect vase for arranging hydrangeas, but lost her when she found the art section.

Our Emma is 17 yrs old today, how can that be! We’ll celebrate with a family barbecue at her house later today, and I’ll make a birthday bouquet using the new to me vase I found yesterday.

Best wishes to all on this sunny summer day.

  5. Monday Meese. 70 going up to 91 here in NYS

    Puerto Rico

    Racism and ignorance on display:

    • Holey moley! Congratulations! I hope it brings you a lot of new follows especially from people who can help promote your causes – it looks like it supercharged your Sunday Morning Sermon tweet. I also retweeted the @threadreaderapp link with the entire thread.

    • W00T! for your first viral hashtag! That particular troll above got a bit more pushback than she probably expected. I don’t know how much of course as I blocked her as soon as I responded to her. LOL

  6. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 72 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 79. It is raining now and will clear up later this morning giving way to sunny skies. My weather widget says that tomorrow and Wednesday will be nice.

It looks like the Mueller hearings opened up the floodgates for House Democrats to support opening an impeachment inquiry. I was hoping that is how it would play out, that dotting that i would be the “permission” to proceed. I was pleased to see that moderate House members in districts that are not slam dunks are signing on – there was a core of members who have been advocating for impeachment since January 20, 2017 and, because of that, they lack credibility. The crimes that he will be impeached for are obstructions of justice, the use of federal resources to block investigations into him and his family. That is what took down Nixon and that is the easiest to prove and the easiest for people to understand. And I agree with those who are saying that if we don’t impeach Trump – regardless of whether or not he is acquitted – impeachment as a tool to rein in a rogue president is meaningless. Last night, Tom Perriello, former Virginia Congressman and former (and future?) gubernatorial candidate made the point that assuming that all Republicans will be anxious to have a vote recorded showing their disdain for the Constitution is a bad reading.

Dem Ldrs DRAMATICALLY underestimate how much GOP Senators under 50 (& Romney) do NOT want their political lives defined by a vote to โ€œexonerateโ€ Trump.
They may do it (and patriotism & principle should be enough for House leaders), but this misread is political malfeasance.

There may not be 67 votes to convict but there may be some Republicans unwilling to lash their political careers to a man who is likely to be found to have committed crimes against the United States that border on treason. I want those Senators to make those votes.

I don’t have a lot of confidence that any Republican will be shamed by the racism their party leader displays but I am glad people have not completely normalized his behaviour. If we just say “oh that is just Trump and Republicans being racist” and go about our business, we accept what he is doing as normal. It isn’t and should never be.

We should all be worried about Dan Coats leaving as DNI. Apparently, his team was responsible for keeping foreign cyberattacks in 2018 from disrupting the mid-term election. With him leaving, there is no one to care about and protect our election security. If they put a Hannity Republican in charge of intelligence, the doors will be open for the 2020 election to be ratfked. Goddess help us if that happens.

Busy day, busy week trying to wrap up July. Thursday is August 1st – and Lammas! – and I am not ready.

    See all y’all later!

  7. I went to the gym for the 2nd day in a row yesterday! And I worked out a schedule to get to the gym today & tomorrow. It does involve leaving work at 3 today. I bought mushrooms on Saturday & forgot to cook them over the weekend, so I need to do that today while theyโ€™re still good. Our weather is back to hot & sticky โ€” heat indexes of 105-108 all week. Sigh. Todayโ€™s music: Dark Switch from Snow Patrol. Bouncy, energetic music, deeply weird video.

Some things fall when theyโ€™re meant to fall
    And you can see everything

Gary has put the lyrics for this album up at their website, promises the back catalog to follow. I love reading his lyrics, they really are poetry.

  8. omg. Iโ€™l actually crying from laughter โ€” had to share, read the comments after you watch the horrifying video (and it is totally true, mayonnaise does weird things to peopleโ€™s minds)

    • Good Moon Day morning, Moosekind! At 11 a.m. it’s 89 F., on its way up to 93 F. with no rain in sight. After today the temps will gradually drop to the high and mid-80s by the end of the week, and the weather will become progressively more thundery.

Yesterday I did nothing but watch the FI race and laze about reading novels. My lack of energy is beginning to worry me. I have a doctor’s appointment a week from today, so perhaps I can ask her about it. The dog-sitter is coming over at noon to get the key and meet Mr. Monty formally. We’re hiring her for tomorrow night when we go to Elder Son’s house.

Had the night from hell last night, which caused me to sleep later this morning. I’ve learned to expect at least one of those per week.

Time’s getting on so I need to at least pretend to be doing something productive! Wishing all a good day.

  9. Low was 70 and it’s 75 now heading for mid 80s – raining at the moment and the PV system is in night mode so no generation at all until things lighten up a bit. Yesterday we got a hair under 19 KWHs and the m-t-d is 516 so we’ve made the primary goal of 500 ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒž and are – or will be when the system comes back up – working towards the secondary goal of highest for the system which would be at least 562. Cats are quiet. Even Rennie settles down to watch the rain with Freddie and Murf while Charlie sleeps and Cloud hides.

Since it seems likely to happen I wish I could agree with people about impeachment. As to the process, of course we can do it on a party-line vote with or without any further investigation or evidence. And of course the Senate will have to try the case – that’s written into the Constitution and I don’t think even Moscow Mitch would simply block that. And why should he? The Rs may hate having to come out in public with a vote on this but they’ll do it anyway and twitler will be “vindicated” with an acquittal. All according to process and procedure for a free and rule-of-law government. But. We aren’t dealing with politicians here. We’ve got a vindictive and rabid squirrel the fascist crime bosses threw under the dogs’ noses. They’ll protect the squirrel as long as they want the distractions – and replace him when they want a different kind of distraction. Even if we could convict (60 votes) and remove from office (67 votes) it wouldn’t close one concentration camp or get one kid out of a cage. These aren’t the product of twitler’s orders – they’re the product of all those blank EOs he signed a year ago that Dems laughed about so contemptuously. Meanwhile, since we won’t convict and can’t remove him from office it will be just like acquitting a Klansman for a lynching. They’ll celebrate by going out and lynching somebody else. Impeach, convict, remove from office and the Rs go back underground and are careful – maybe actually close the worst of the camps and do some very-carefully choreographed family reunitings. Impeach, acquit – there’ll be death camps. And I really hope I’m wrong since we’re gonna do it anyway.

    The pumpkin muffin/bread/squares came out more like muffins and less like pie this time. Not enough leavening though so very dense. I’ve got to remember that pumpkin is heavy and the recipe needs a bit of assist to raise it. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ Taste good though. Not as good as if I’d had more molasses, but still good. My hands were/are hurting and I never did manage the floors yesterday. I’m hoping once the rain passes through they’ll be better enough so I can remove a layer of cat hair, tracked litter, and shredded cardboard before it gets any deeper. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  10. Good morning, Meesefolk; 70 when I got up this morning and heading up to a muggy 86. There are storms in the forecast for tonight, which will bring welcome rain and even more welcome cooler temperatures. I don’t know whether it was the heat this weekend, general laziness, or just a mood, but I got absolutely nothing done over the weekend. I decided not to fight it and tried to read instead, but that led to dozing off mid-chapter. Even turning on the tv led to full snooze before the first commercial. So I guess a correction to my statement is in order: I got absolutely nothing done, except for lots and lots of sleep, this weekend.

I’m still dealing with the aftermath of last week’s audit, so I need to get back to it. Good day to and for all!

  11. Good morning, 68 and sunny in Bellingham. Another slow and sleepy morning for me. We enjoyed celebrating Emma’s 17th birthday yesterday…..family, good food, dogs, and a pretty summer day. She is a lovely young woman.

Best wishes to all as I try to get my Monday underway.

    • yay, I did it! Had to delete the old Flickr app on my phone, change my Flickr password on the computer, install a new app on the phone, log in with the new password, and then remember how to embed a photo so the size doesn’t overwhelm the page.

Thanks for the nudge Diana. It’s good to be able to share photos again.

    • RonK was set by default as an Author and needed to be set as Author-Plus (a new role I invented when anotherdemocrat reported she couldn’t post images everywhere) in order to put images in the comments. I made the change this morning. Try again! The link you provided doesn’t give me any images – it appears to be a link to your internal account.

      • Thanks Jan. He’s at the gym now so we’ll try again when he gets home.

  12. Tuesday Meese. 72 here in Saugerties, NY going up to 95

We had a severe thunderstorm alert here yesterday – which missed us and hit to our east.

    Good news for Harris campaign

    • The polls over the past few days are trying to harsh the Harris buzz but these kind of endorsements are more important at this point.

I was a little disappointed that Michigan’s governor was suggesting we could not both call out tRump’s racism and work to help working families. She called his tweets “a distraction” and said it doesn’t put food on the table for Michigan’s families. I think we can multi-task and I am not sure why so many white people don’t get that “addressing economic anxiety” is not enough – we need civil rights and human rights, fairness for those who have the president* of the United States telling them to “go back” and denying them the American dream. A good paying job is useless if you were just shot to death by a cop at a traffic stop because you “looked scary.”

  13. Left work early yesterday, ran home & cooked the mushrooms I bought Saturday & made a big pot of tea โ€” and I went to the gym! Thatโ€™s 3 days in a row, plus shorter (10 minutes) walks last Thursday & Friday. Today, I want to run by a thrift store near me, because itโ€™s 30% off & I could use some new capris. Then Iโ€™l go on to the gym. iPod & earphones are all charged up. Itโ€™ll be weird not watching MSNBC tonight. Maybe Iโ€™ll flip over during commercials & when BS is talking.

  14. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 61 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 73. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

I was laughing at Moscow’s Mitch harumphing about the bad treatment he is getting for his blocking of election security bills in his role as Grim Reaper and Putin’s Puppet. He even enlisted his propagandists at the Wall Street Journal to pen an editorial calling his treatment “the worst thing evah!” What a bunch of babies! From the party that called Barack Obama a Kenyan Socialist and spent 8 years trashing him, delicate flower Mitch McConnell tries to get us to weep for him when we call him what he is – the man who allowed Russia to ratfk his own country’s presidential election in 2016 and is intent on repeating that for 2020. Bastid!

A headline this morning said it was the “last chance” for some 2020 Democratic Party primary candidates to make their case. Goddess, I certainly hope so! The field needs to be small enough to fit on a single stage – these two night debates are ridiculous. I am looking forward to reading about (I will not watch or click on CNN content) the Warren v Sanders interactions. Will they treat each other with kid gloves? It would make no sense because they are in the same lane and only one will survive for the stretch run. They may decide it is too early to nuke their opponent. I was pleased to see Kamala Harris release her version of Medicare for All to allow her to see where the blows will be coming from. Very smart.

Two more days in July – I need to get to it.

    See all y’all later!

  15. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! It’s another beautiful day, with the temp. in Ashburn 81 F., going up to 95 F. later. I’m beginning to feel more like myself again, thank Goddess! I’ve work to do.

Today is the fourth birthday of my Lammas Eve-born grandson, Mr. Preschooler. We, including Mr. Kindergartener who is staying with us until Thursday night, are going to the birthday dinner at Elder Son’s house this evening. Question: what do you give a four-year-old who has his own car? True, it’s a used model, but it’s a bright red convertible and goes pretty well. I’m giving him Kamala’s book, Superheroes Are Everywhere, and a set of 20 thin little books called Shakespeare’s Plays for Children. Miss Pink Cheeks loved reading those before she got started on the Dragon series. I also bought a little donkey-shaped pinata for him to bash.

We’ve even hired a dog-sitter for the Mont-ster, so everything should go reasonably well.

Really pleased that Moscow Mitch is upsettikins with his new nickname. I’ll push it every chance I get.

Do you agree with me that certain elements are very, very afraid of Kamala? I can’t wait for her to make mincemeat of Thing next year during the “debates.”

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!
