Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Aug. 25th through Aug. 31st

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 54 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 75. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese.

Spent much of yesterday morning thinking it was Sunday – so I get two in a row – lol
64 and cloudy here in the NY Catskills, going up to 76 which is cool for this time of year – I won’t complain.

    Puerto Rico

  3. Kamala campaign news

The viral hit job against Kamala – refuted

A viral video purports to show staffers for California Senator Kamala Harris ” walking out on” Bernie Sanders’ speech to the Democratic National Committee’s summer meeting in San Francisco, but full video of the event shows that this is not the case.

On Friday, Sanders supporter and Young Turks alum John Graziano posted video of the Harris contingent filing out of the DNC meeting with chants of “She’s smart! She’s strong! With Kamala, you can’t go wrong!”, along with his own aggrieved description: “Kamala staffers walking out on Bernie’s speech to the DNC. They’re now yelling outside the hall as Bernie begins to speak.”

    • Butthurt berners bothered by being associated with a LOSER!!!

If you want to understand how awful the BS campaign is, you simply need to look at the alliances he encourages – Young Turks and their Cenkian misogynism and anti-Democratic Party assholishness should NEVER be given a platform to spew their toxicity.

The No Fun Party? Not for Kamala’s Joyful Warriors.

      • It’s interesting that I’ve read a slew of pun-idjit commentary on how dull Kamala’s campaign is

  4. WTF

    • These people are essentially the Gestapo. We have a ton of cleaning up to do when we regain power.

  5. Up & watching the news. Tea is steeping, got next week’s lunch out of the freezer so it can thaw. Yesterday I did housework, didn’t get to the gym. This morning, I’m writing notes about next Friday’s matching money for the walk on the little slips of paper I hand out to friends at church. Maybe I’ll get to the gym this afternoon.

  6. Good beautiful Sunday morning, Meese! Today is a reprise of yesterday’s delightful weather, the blue skies, sunshine, low humidity, and so on. The current temp. in NoVa is 69 F., going up to 76 F. later. I must get out for a walk today: I’m so overweight now that I’m waddling.

Not much to say except that I didn’t get much done yesterday. I do need to go to the store again because I forgot two major ingredients for tonight’s dinner. Yesterday Dearly had a dinner he liked, but tonight he’ll suffer through tabouleh and raita, with fresh peaches for dessert. I do love cooking at home because I can make the vegan meals I prefer.

Really must write letters today, too. I have too much fun in the evenings on line.

Wishing all at the Pond a good day!

  7. It’s 71 but really humid at the moment in Fay., AR. Not supposed to get above 80 today – mostly because it’s forecast to rain this afternoon starting about the time the temps would be going above that. I hope we can get some decent generation before then but, well, afternoon is peak generating time. Yesterday we got 12 KWHs and the m-t-d is 326 – we’ve got 7 generating days left in the month counting today so 400 is very possible. But only if we get 11 per day and that is unfortunately not looking likely. sigh.

Lawn guy came yesterday. He took 3 “sessions” just to do the tractor part – the push mower/weedeating “detail” work almost never gets done with him. In fact the areas around my back door, the bird feeder, and the garden box where the rose, lavendar, rosemary, & sage bushes are haven’t been done at all this year. When my hands permit – not often – I’ve pulled the grass in those areas but that’s it. The boys – young men as they’re in their 20s now – next door are talking about starting their own lawn service and said they’d give “deals” to the neighbors if enough of us commit to hiring them for the entire lawn season so that’s what I’m hoping for next year. Meanwhile the tractor stirred up enough dust and pollen my chest still hurts and I’m having trouble doing anything that requires bending down (chest tightens, start coughing) so the litterboxes got done but the floors haven’t. Hopefully later in the day I’ll be able to manage that.

Global warming playing out in real time. Winter’s coming early this year and early enough where Aji is that things she’d scheduled and budgeted for end of September/early October have to be done – and paid for – now. I know she’s not going to do a fundraiser at DK but she tweeted out her blogpost saying they need about $3500 over the next few weeks to deal with that. She’d always rather do sales or her Patreon – hates like poison needing to take money as gifts/”charity” – but the latter seems to have stalled out and the former has been really hit-and-miss since the 2016 election. (People didn’t even wait for twitler to be sworn in before they started sitting on their money.) I so wish I knew somebody who would both appreciate and has the money for that butterfly concha belt Wings finished/released for sale a few weeks back. I can’t of anything in the wypipo tradition that would be significant enough for that belt but the Latina Quinceañera celebration is that kind of significant. Not that it would “go with” the garb traditions of that celebration (that I know of) – it’s a Pueblo Native (hand cut, hand stamped, hand shaped) silver concha belt – but surely somebody somewhere has a tradition (and the money) for something that special. Wings has also created pendants that I swear belong to priestesses although what Tradition I don’t know – but they would if they saw them. His work is so good it should be going like hotcakes. If it was, there’d be no need for fundraisers – even with the medical bills that are so evilly high. (& it is evilly high. Her chiro, which she needs weekly right now and ain’t gonna get it, is 3x what my chiro is & NM is poorer than AR ffs.) Anyway, good thoughts, gifts, Patreon subscription, and purchases are all welcome.

    Since I can’t finish my Sunday chores just yet, I guess I’ll boost some tweets and visit DK for Dee’s Sunday Sermon. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Hi, bfitz! Wonder whether Wings has ever considered doing brooches as well as earrings. I have pathetically small, weak earlobes and a life that doesn’t lend itself to wearing “danglies,” but I do have two beautiful scarves. I need a brooch with a very fine pin so it won’t damage the silk. Then I could wear the scarf with a pale dress or top.

Perhaps you could ask her. I could send you color pictures of the scarves so Wings would have some idea as to which materials to use.

      • {{{Diana}}} Wings definitely does pins. I’m wearing at the moment. I don’t know whether he’s got a fine enough one for silk scarves. Aji would know of course. Actually the best thing would be to DM Aji with your questions and your pictures – she matches colors for him – rather than going through me. My color eye is off, to say the least, and going from you to me to Aji to Wings and back has one too many people in that chain to be sure nothing gets garbled in translation. LOL.

  8. Good morning, 60 and cloudy in Bellingham. Seems early, but the air smells like fall, the leaves on my old maple trees are starting to change color, and end of season gardening tasks are needing to be done. I’ll start by removing spent flowers from my container plantings. The begonias are looking bedraggled and the million bells are basically done.

I’ve scanned the morning news but tRump angst/discouragement is overwhelming my thoughts so I’m going to try to change the conversation inside my head today. Best wishes to all.

  9. Monday, Monday… (have that song in my head)

Feels like fall here in the Catskills – which is weird – 56 degrees atm, going up to 77. I won’t complain – it’s lovely.

    This weather is not:

    • We are having that weather also! I will not complain either – I just got my electric bill for cooling the house last month and it was not pretty. We don’t usually get the extreme heat and it has really changed how people enjoy summer – much less outdoors activity which is not a good thing for a people who are already pretty sedentary.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 63 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 72. It is raining now and expected to rain off and on all day. The rest of the week will be perfect fall weather – low to mid 70s, partly cloudy, 50s overnight. If we are done with summer, I am fine with that.

Count me as NOT gleeful about Joe Walsh primarying Trump. He says he won’t go third party but he also is a racist asshole and certainly not trustworthy. Yes, he will be a burr in tRump’s saddle but if he catches on enough – and pulls in enough money – he might “change his mind” and go third party which could easily ratfk a close election. In Wisconsin, the people who despised Trump but couldn’t vote for Hillary voted for Gary Johnson. No one really knows whose votes would go to a third party.

I am glad that the G7 is over – it is painful to watch how diminished the United States is in the world community with a literal pile of excrement as our “leader.” To remember President Barack Obama on the world stage and contrast it to the current occupant, is a source of great sadness. It didn’t have to be this way.

I may not be able to check in tomorrow as I have an early morning project that will limit my online time. So PLEASE stay out of trouble! :)

    See all y’all later!

  11. Was awake at 4:30 so I got up & came downtown early, got in a 20-something minute walk. Didn’t push hard, because I haven’t done outside stuff in a while & it’s 80 freaking degrees at 6am. The hope for rain & cooler temps over Labor Day has diminished.

I gave out little slips of paper with my Walk page info & a handwritten note about the doubling of donations on Friday, to about 6 people. Will also send out some e-mails — maybe on a day I’m less sleepy — and got to think of a good thing for a diary.

  12. Good Moon Day morning, Meese, and another lovely day it is. Right now in Ashburn it’s 62 F, going up to 77 F. with no rain in sight.

Posted my short story, “Waking the Old Gods,” on the GLBT literature forum at dk. Thanks for reading it, Dee!

Wish I could get over what I call “reactive laziness.” I expended so much energy looking after The Littles last week that since Thursday evening I’ve done hardly anything. Now that I’ve turned in my articles, it’s time for the Great Closet Cleanup. I’ll do my best, but it’s going to be a thankless job. Glad to hear that people are pushing back against Marie Kondo and her “only keep 30 books” advice. I’d rather have NO furniture at all than get rid of my books, and even here in this tiny, crammed flat I have more than 30 in my bookcases.

Have a party planning meeting at 10, so I’d better hurry up with breakfast. If my mother were still alive she’d keel over at the thought of my being a party planner for my floor of the Home. I’m an introvert who’d rather curl up in a chair and read than go to a party, but living in community as I do, one must do something.

Happy Women’s Equality Day, everyone, and do please mentally thank all the women who marched, suffered, and died before equality was achieved.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  13. It’s 72 heading for 90 in Fay., AR – clear and sunny too for a change. Rain’s supposed to move in again around midnight and the temps , especially the overnights, will drop into the low 60s starting Wed around dawn. If things go as forecast. With the off and on rain yesterday we got just 10 KWHs and the m-t-d is 336. Hope we get some solid generation today. 400 for the month is still possible but we need 11/day to get it.

One foot in front of the other – for me this morning that was go to the bank for September cash and hit WalMart (boo! hiss! but they’re open by 8 and PetSmart isn’t) for kibble. And it’s gonna be visit various internets & then start boosting stuff for Aji. At this point she’s in so much pain she’s just getting out the basics – having to regroup financially every other week is just adding to her stress. So I’m wandering through both her daily blog post and Wings’ gallery and just putting together links to RT. I have no idea whether or not it’s doing any good at all. But I’ve got 521 followers who don’t follow her – and at least half of them are real people – so I figure it’s worth trying/doing.

    Also one foot in front of the other, I need to get out and take a walk. That will help my low back and hips and I haven’t had one in several days because it never cleared off long enough to chance it. Probably do some reading and boosting first. Finish the 1st cup of coffee, take the walk before my 2nd/last cup. LOL. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  14. Good morning, Meesefolk; 61 this morning and a high of 75 today…our perfect weather continues. I wish I could take this with me when I’m in NC this weekend for my nephew’s wedding. The high there is expected to be 89 which is entirely too hot. I asked the bride-to-be to talk with her wedding planner about ordering cooler weather; if she actually had a wedding planner, I’m sure she would.

I spent the weekend thinking about doing an awful lot of stuff and then accomplishing nothing. It was beautiful weather for working outside, but I just couldn’t get moving. I’d like to blame this on my mood since finding out I’m being let go, but mostly I think it was just laziness. Hopefully I’ll do better the balance of this week, because there are things I really, really need to get done before driving to NC.

Good day to and for all!

    • {{{DoReMI}}} – a lot of thinking while not doing anything is called stress relief. Highly recommended (in moderate doses of course) in these stressful times. {{{HUGS}}}

      • Diana, that question made me laugh; let’s just say that my work history is…eclectic. When The Hubby was active duty, I had to reinvent myself with each move; some of my jobs over the years:
        purchasing agent
producer and editor (photo, film, and copy) for an educational audio-visual company
        retail store manager
defense analyst (sonar signal analyst; test and evaluation of submarine software; war gaming)
        technical editor
        sales support staff
        MI certified nurseryman
        sales coordinator
        bookkeeper

There really is an underlying theme; if it’s detail-oriented and administrative, it’s probably something I’ve done or can do.

        • (Gulp!) Wow! What a list. You probably need resumes in several different flavors, based on the availability of jobs in your area.

I did a resume for an Army wife once. She wanted to apply for a position as Executive Director for a nonprofit. Like you, she’d followed her husband around from post to post so she had quite a variety of experience. (Of course, she was always called a secretary so they could underpay her.) Anyway, I did a modified functional resume for her. She interviewed and was hired! She ran around telling everyone I’d got her the job, which made me laugh.

All I did was present her background in the most favorable light possible, focusing on those parts of her experience (newsletter production, public relations, and so on) and studiously avoiding the word “secretary.” A resume doesn’t get you the job—it gets you the interview. It’s the interview that gets you the job! Anyway, she was one of my big successes.

Sigh. My favorite client was the Norwegian pilot hunk who came to see me twice, wearing fewer clothes each time. I used to pray that the urge to update his resume would strike him while he was swimming. I wouldn’t have cared if he’d dripped all over the carpet. Alas, I only got to see him in Bermuda shorts.

  15. Good morning, 53 and overcast in Bellingham. A blown transformer caused a wide spread power outage yesterday afternoon. Amazing how quiet the house is when everything turns off. When the power came back on the digital thermometer kept turning the furnace on but we eventually figured out how to reset it. Everything just hums along until it doesn’t!

Ava will be here soon so my day will be busy and fun. She starts school on Wednesday. Time for coffee, and as always, my best wishes to all.

  16. Tuesday – Watching the approaching storm

Pray for Puerto Rico, the USVI and the rest of the Caribbean

    • Yesterday, a woman was telling me about how Puerto Ricans aren’t citizens & we should just cut those “ungrateful” people loose….It was all I could do to just find the books she wanted & get her off my phone. I really wanted to reach through the receiver & shake her.

      • Dear Goddess, people are ignorant! This is what comes of lumping civics, history, and geography together as “social studies” instead of teaching each subject separately.

And now we have a nation of people who pronounce “Iraq” as “Eye-rack,” and who attack turban-wearing Sikhs as being Muslim.

        Duh.

  17. Really, really was gonna walk before work again. I even wore workout clothes & had my work clothes in a bag to change into once I got here. But it somehow didn’t happen. It was 5:25, I was getting my things together to walk out the door, then it was 10 minutes later. (and now at work, I don’t know how it got to be after 7 so fast either, I changed into my work clothes, had a couple bites of breakfast and whoosh 45 minutes went by) I’ll try to go to the gym after work. Here, listen to sweet Disappear from INXS.
