Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Sept. 8th through Sept. 14th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, 60 and cloudy in Bellingham. Seems like a lot of house keeping is needed this fall. Yesterday we took 3 large area rugs to be cleaned and pounded the grime out of the pads. I’m always surprised with what I find when a carpet is lifted. So much for keeping a clean house!

    I’ve got some desk work to do this morning and hope to be in my sewing room this afternoon. Best wishes to all.

  2. Friday Meese.

    52 going up to 73 in the Catskills.

    Puerto Rico

  3. It’s Friday, Meese, a soft gray morning with light drizzle and considerably cooler temperatures. Right now it’s 67 F. in Ashburn, inching up toward today’s high of 71 F. I must say it’s a relief to have cooler temperatures and grayer skies. We’re all tired of being scorched here.

    We watched two hours of the “debate” last night, couldn’t make it to the third. We had to go to bed. It was far less stupid than the previous debates, aside from the tiresome “gotcha” questions of Linsey and Georgy-Porgy (I have despised the latter for years). Castro did not show himself in a good light by making fun of Uncle Joe, IMHO. On the other hand, Uncle Joe showed himself to be an old dodderer, Saint Bernard of No Accomplishments was his usual raspy, finger-wagging self, and Kamala was as feisty as ever. (Aside: I’m going to have to get used to the idea that she probably will not be the nominee, as desperately as I’d like her to.)

    In conclusion, why Joe is “electable” because “white people” (meaning racist males) will likely vote for him, I’ll never know. The electorate consists of far more than white males.

    Anyway, the Shred Truck is coming this morning, yay! At noon we’re leaving for the beach, which is supposed to be rather nice this weekend. Even if it isn’t, I hope to get some work done. I’d really like to bring out a collection of short stories in time for Christmas. I have three more to write, so I’d love to at least begin work on them tonight and tomorrow night. Monty will stay at his usual hotel.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  4. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 68 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 68. Lingering showers this morning and sunny skies this afternoon. I hope the storms are done, last night was the third night in a row with disturbed sleep – the main line last night came through at about 10pm with a second line at 11pm. My dog was a mess!

    I did not watch the debate even though it was not on a cable news network (I am boycotting those). Erik Loomis at LGM has it right: “Debates are dumb political theater. You should do literally anything else other than watch them. If anything happens of interest, you can read about it later and without wasting the time of watching. The culture of politics as entertainment is incredibly toxic and these debates and the coverage of them are a major contributor to that toxicity. ” I will read a few articles about it – or tuck them away to read/ignore later – and go about my day.

    I am keeping an eye on the impeachment drama. You can tell a person’s political bent by how they frame the “go slow and do it right” process unfolding in the House Judiciary committee. The attacks on Nancy Pelosi are dumb and play right into the hands of Republicans who run against her in every election. The attacks on Jerry Nadler are ridiculous! He is not “slow walking” as much as he is “doing it right.” The Republicans will be teeing up 2020 election ads based on the impeachment process – tRump is already tweeting out fake quotes about it – and we need to dot every i and cross every t to make sure that they have no openings. They will lie, of course, but we don’t have to answer every lie, we just need to make sure that the courts accept the process. At some point, the Trump administration will block the access to documents and witnesses, Susan Collins’ Supreme Court will uphold their right to ratfk the process, and we will decide what to do at that time. There are so many impeachable actions and many of them don’t need additional documents – the Mueller report has the evidence we need. So even the Collins Court can’t stop the process completely.

    It is Friday and we are halfway done with September!! How can that be when I have not gotten a single project done? I have been fighting fires and dealing with beginning of school and here we are. It is Friday the 13th (lucky day!) with a full moon which has not occurred for a while. This full moon is being called a micromoon (as opposed to a macromoon?); I hope for clear skies to see it tonight.

    See all y’all later!

  5. I wrote a diary about today’s donation match, please rec/share:

    I watched some of the debate, kept flipping away though. Glad I have till February to make up my mind. Meanwhile, the next week is all about the AIDS Walk. Oh, and this:

    The Gospel According to Bono
    Part of the Religion in Public Event Series, Dr. Chad Seales
    Wed, September 18, 2019 | George Washington Carver Museum
    6:30 PM

               Sponsored by: Department of Religious Studies

    I’ve got to line up a substitute note taker for my monthly Democratic club meeting. And crap, it just hit me that that’s my last chance to hit up people for Walk donations….. I really should go to my CAD meeting, shouldn’t I? Why is this on a Wednesday???

  6. It’s (barely) under 70 this morning – so I baked cheese-corn muffin-bread for coffee breaks and breakfasts over the next week or so. 😁 It’s not even supposed to get up to 80 today which I’ll believe if it hasn’t done it by sundown. We didn’t get the rain we were supposed to but we’ve got the clouds. sigh. Not heavy clouds though. The PV system isn’t doing much but it is on at least. Yesterday we got 13 KWHs and the m-t-d is 175. So far so good. I hope it clears off in a bit and we get at least 10 for the day.

    I didn’t watch the debates last night. Actually I stopped watching debates years back. There are much less irritating ways to find out what a candidate stands for and plans to do should they end up in the WH. I did go to my local state rep’s re-election campaign kickoff party. I didn’t stay long. I can’t handle the crowds or the noise these days. Don’t know if that’s age, depression, or something else. I went early though and so I could talk to her for a few minutes – blessings of local rather than national elections that I could do that – and volunteered my computer and my time for data entry and stuff like that for her campaign. She’s the one who started our Moms’ Demand chapter – and she is one of the few bright spots, reasons for hope, in our state legislature.

    My sister emailed me yesterday. They’re putting together a family reunion the last weekend in October. I’ve got a lot of “no” on going – we shall see if I can find enough “yes” to go anyway. It’s an 11-hour drive from here at the time of year when there aren’t 11 hours of daylight in the day. That means a 2-day drive. Each way. Minimum of 5 days for a cat-sitter even if I only stay one day. To visit with people who don’t even send me birthday or christmas cards on a regular basis. Like I said, a lot of “no” – so we’ll see what I come up with for “yes”. Meanwhile I need coffee. & to figure out some exercise since I don’t think I want to get very far from the house – just in case these clouds decide to dump the water they’re holding. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good morning, Meesefolk; 61 this morning and headed to 81…or 77…or 79; my widget currently has three different highs listed, depending on which part of the screen I’m looking at. They all agree that the chance of rain later today is 80%+, and given how cloudy it is, that, at least seems accurate.

    I didn’t watch the debate, but my twitter feed was sometimes enlightening and sometimes confusing. The Debate-According-to-My-Twitter-Feed went something like this:

    Castro: very rude and ageist to VP Biden OR another instance where Castro is getting called out merely for being a brown man not showing the proper deference to a white man;

    Booker: running for Preacher-in-Chief, but despite/because of that, made a very impressive showing;

    Mayor Pete: he’s sooooo smart, but he’s sooooo white;

    Bernie: Why the fk is he YELLING?!!!

    Biden: He just told African-American families that they need to listen to more music? And they don’t know how to raise their children? Go home, Joe, while you still have an untattered reputation;

    Warren: She’s not getting enough time!!! She’s getting too much time!!! She’ perfect!!! OMG, what is with all the Warren stans who think she’s perfect when she’s clearly not?!!!;

    Harris: Prosecutor-in-Chief FTW! Making the case against 45* the whole time; are there other people on the stage?;

    Klobuchar: 2012 called and said your debate prep is perfect. 2019 called and reminded you it’s not 2012;

    Yang: Who? What was his pre-debate-hyped message? (Seriously, what was it?); and

    Beto: New, improved version worth a second look OR new, improved version worth a second look…for a Cabinet post.

    Back to work…good day to and for all!

    • Your summary makes me smile, and given my grouchy state of mind that’s most welcome. Thanks!

    • His hyped message was that he’s trying out his UBI idea by giving 10 (I think it was 10) people $1,000 a month for the next year

      • Thank you. Clearly the people I follow on Twitter are so deep into the “Yang, who?” mindset that no one found it worth mentioning!

    • Excellent recap, I can close all my open debate review tabs!!

      This:

      Klobuchar: 2012 called and said your debate prep is perfect. 2019 called and reminded you it’s not 2012;

      Ha!!

  8. Good morning, 60 and cloudy in Bellingham. Seems like the dark and wet weather has arrived early this year. It’s time to put the patio furnishings away, but I’ll wait until we have a few sunny days so the umbrellas are dry.

    Another slow and sleepy morning. Election worries are merging with tRump angst, making for unsettled nights. I briefly considered gardening in the rain with a headlamp last night but decided it was wiser to deep breathe and go back to sleep :)

    Best wishes to all.

  9. Interesting…this is the town where my daughter works and sort of lives (she’s in their school district, but her house is technically, by about 500 yards, in Columbus). Anyway, Otterbein University is Kiddo’s alma mater, but more famous for its alum, Bill in Portland ME. I’ll have to see if tickets are being made available to university folks; if Kiddo can get any and I’m still unemployed at that point, I may make the drive down.

    • CNN will want to spread it out over 2 nights so that their right-wing hosts can take whacks at Democrats for 6 full hours – that is what fuels their viewers! Easy call to skip that one.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 54 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 75. Sunny skies are in the forecast. A perfect day following a quiet night without storms and worried doggies.

    I can’t stay, I have to get a few projects done and then I need to leave. Senator Cortez Masto of Nevada gave the Democratic Party Weekly Address and it is on the bipartisan gun background check bill that #MoscowMitch is blocking. I will try to get the Fighting Back post published before I leave – if not, I will take care of it when I return later in the day.

    See all y’all later!

  11. Saturday Meese.

    I have the heat turned on. It was cold last night. Will go up to 73 with rain today here in the Catskills.

    My favorite tweet this morning.
    Re sexism.

  12. Puerto Rico

  13. Up & watching the news. They had a nice segment about turning Texas blue, so that was a hopeful start. And Peter Segal is on the show this hour, he was very well-received last time. Today: groceries, and try to get to the gym. I’m going to charge up my iPod & headphones. Thank you to everyone who donated & shared yesterday. I got several donations — probably not gonna make it to $5K, but over $3K is pretty great.

  14. Overnight low in Fay., AR was 61 – and for the first time this season the current “feels like” temp of 67 is lower than the current actual of 70. Winter is a comin’ in. Or at least Autumn is solidly here no matter what the calendar printers say. Yesterday we didn’t get above 75 because the rain that didn’t come at midnight came at noon. And stayed. We got 4.8 KWHs generated and the m-t-d is 180 – still on track but yesterday didn’t help any. We needed the rain though. Got about half an inch and it dampened the dust anyway. Doesn’t seem to have done much about the pollen. sigh.

    If it weren’t for people I can’t keep in touch with any other way, I think I’d blow off social media as I’ve already blown off TV & radio. It’s getting more toxic by the minute and nothing I’ve done or apparently can do seems to even slow it down. sigh. But I can and do keep in touch with people I care for via Twitter so that’s that. I’ll keep on keeping on – knowing that if we do not break up the RW propaganda machine the next time we have power to 1) we won’t have that power long & 2) we aren’t gonna get another chance. Knowing that our team hasn’t paid any attention to that or the fascist cabal that owns it no matter who tells them about it – if Molly Ivins and Hillary Clinton weren’t/aren’t listened to…

    I’ve got my shopping done for the week. If it stays cool today I may bake cookies. I haven’t done that in almost 5 months now. It’d be nice to have my own oatmeal-walnut cookies with my apple for dessert tonight. Meanwhile it’s time to tour the internets. And get coffee as soon as the cat gets off my lap. LOL. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  15. Good morning, 58 and cloudy in Bellingham. The furnace is turning on now so ready or not I’ve been closing windows and this year washing the screens before putting them away. Seems like I’m closing up the house early this year, but the leaves are changing color on my maple trees so it’s time.

    I didn’t do anything I planned to do yesterday so no need to write a new list for today. We want to go the the new movie about Linda Ronstadt this afternoon so like it or not the desk needs my attention this morning.

    Best wishes to all on this quiet fall morning.
