Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Sept. 29th through Oct. 5th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

It is 55 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 59. Showers and more showers to add to the training line of storms that battered the area last night. And NWS, thank you for text alerts that sound like an incoming nuclear strike is happening!! I do not need flash flood alerts at 7:30pm, 8:30pm and 9:30pm. :(

Gotta run – just checking in.

    See all y’all later!

  2. Good Woden’s Day morning, Moosekind, and welcome to a record-breaking scorcher of 95 F. today! Currently the temperature in Ashburn is 69 F.

Still battling with lack of sleep owing to too-early risings in the morning, which make me want to go to bed at 9:30 p.m., so that I never get anything done. Yesterday after supper I fell asleep in the green chair. Did my nanny-granny thing as well. It’s a 25-mile round trip three times a week, involving a three-hour chunk of my time every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, so it’s rather wearing. Just hope Younger Son gets the the position he’s waiting to hear about so he can work at home three days a week.

In other news, I’ve the usual schedule conflicts. One day I’ll learn to keep my schedule on my phone, but right now that seems to be beyond me. Writers’ Group is at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, but I’ve already promised to work a couple of hours at HQ, putting together walk packets.

The news is coming so thick and fast I feel overwhelmed. Just can’t keep up with this merde. Feel as if we’re living in Erdogan’s Turkey, or wossname’s Hungary, or some other place where the rule of law is ignored. Thingamajig told his State Department minions not to show up to testify on the Hill? The entire administration is composed of lawless, norm-ignoring, rule-breaking sleazebags.

Going to concentrate on my own projects most of the day, and go to the gym to exercise or die in the attempt. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • I have been plagued with unwanted early risings as well! I wonder if there is a disturbance in the force that is making us unsettled. Certainly there is a lot of negative energy swirling around us right now. I sometimes worry that we will never again have the comfort of knowing that sane competent people are in charge of our country and keeping an eye out for our well-being. :(

  3. Another 79 degree morning — as I asked on FB, will August ever end? Walked .82 mile, not bad. Weather guy is getting very excited about a cold front next week, we might have normal weather! (highs in the 80s, lows in the 60s — I’d have to wear long sleeves for my morning walks) I’m really hoping we’re in the “worse before it gets better” part. This thing in the news about moats & alligators….his sickness has to be apparent to anyone with any semblance of normalcy. Anyway, today’s walking song: Wild Horses (what are you holding back? I know you’ve wild horses enough inside of you)

  4. Wednesday Meese

72 going up to 78 and raining here in the Catskills

    Puerto Rico

  5. It’s 71 heading for mid-to-upper 80s today and sunny. Last day of this according to the forecast – a “cold” front is supposed to move in tonight and Autumn with it. Next week has lows predicted in the 50s & even a couple of 40s! I hope to heaven I get my wood by then. But day temps even in the upper 60s are good enough to keep the house warm – as long as it’s sunny. Yesterday we got 11.2 KWHs which isn’t bad considering the oak tree puts heavy shade on the panels all morning and some of the panels even into the afternoon. The full system isn’t in clear sun until 2 and with the days getting shorter, that means only a few hours of good production. Once I have my firewood I’ll love a good hard/heavy frost. That signals the oak to drop her leaves.

Turns out my washing machine pump went out yesterday – or rather an integral piece of it broke off – which is gonna cost about $400 to repair (parts and labor). So I guess at the moment it’s just as well the firewood hasn’t come in since that means the money is actually in my checking account and I don’t have to move it from anywhere. Social Security comes early this month. Things will be OK. At least in my life. Others…well, back to praying. A lot.

    I’m not sure if I’ll get my walk in today. Waiting for the repair guy again – he thinks he can get the water pump today. He’ll call before coming back but when that is…I don’t want to be away from the phone when he does. Maybe laps around the house or something. I tried baking my sausages instead of getting out the electric grill. Just to see what would happen I didn’t take them out and turn them halfway through. That and because I’m pretty sure trying to turn 32 sausage patties on a very hot pan is a very bad idea for someone as clumsy as I am. The higher rack pan load cooked well but didn’t brown at all. The lower rack pan load browned on the bottom like dim sum. Either way, they’re tasty though without the browning more like meatballs than sausage. I’m set for the next 4 weeks or so. Then I’ll decide whether I want to try it again. LOL. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning, Meesefolk; 59 when I got up this morning and climbing to 61. OK, so “climbing” is a bit of overstatement. The rain is here; it actually arrived yesterday, despite a weather forecast that said no rain. We may see the sun again on Friday. It sure would be nice to dry out a bit, so I can’ work outside on Saturday (and before the rain returns on Sunday).

I got the online stuff for unemployment completed yesterday. I still have to go to one of the offices for reasons that aren’t clear to me. I think they assume that a lot of people won’t be able to upload resumes to the talent bank; since I was able to, they probably need to verify that? It’s not 100% clear to me, but I’ll head there either tomorrow or Friday and find out. Today I have to get some resumes sent out. I pretty much took yesterday off and haven’t paid much attention to what’s out there for several days; it’s time to get back to “work.” I’m very, very nervous about what’s happening to the economy in MI, so I want to get something nailed down before the GM strike craters our economy. The UAW is playing it pretty cool so far, but their updates clearly include an element of preparing for the long haul.

Good day to and for all!

  7. Good morning, 44 and partly sunny in Bellingham. While Ron was at the gym yesterday I just started doing everything outside so when he came home he had no choice re helping me finish :) So the outdoor furnishings are all clean and put away for winter, including the umbrellas. My knees are not happy, but it feels good to have the big task done regardless.

I’m going to sort my sewing room today. I’ve started too many projects and the piles have grown so I need to make some priority choices and try to finish something.

Best wishes to all on this looking like fall day.

  8. Thursday Meese.

49 going up to only 51 with rain here in the Catskills

    Puerto Rico

  9. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 55 degrees in Madison with and expected daytime high of 59. Mostly cloudy skies are in the forecast. Note to self: when you will be traveling in the Fall, toss a jacket in the car because 55 degrees is COLD!!

It looks like I missed a lot of news yesterday while I was offline! It will take a while to catch up which I will do after I get a few early morning projects done – the ones that need to be done before clients start work. I hope Pompeo’s State Department Inspector General’s attempt to discredit Congressional investigations is a warning to Democrats – and Twitter – that a slow, deliberate process means not setting your hair on fire with every “report” of malfeasance. And that anyone in the Trump Administration is not to be trusted to bear honest witness.

Big reminder yesterday that electing a nearly 80 year old person to the presidency is not a great idea. Yes, heart conditions can affect a 40 year old or a 50 year old or a 60 year old also but the odds of it seriously limiting your activities begin increasing the older you get. Let’s elect someone in their 50s(!!) who can handle the grueling job of president.

    See all y’all later!!

    • Ha! It’s 78 this morning in Austin, highs in the upper 90s; through the weekend. Supposed to be a cold front on Monday that will finally get us down to normal. 60s is going to feel downright cold Monday morning. 80s for highs will feel miraculous.

  10. I was absolutely convinced when I woke up that it was Friday. I was so convinced that instead of putting on my walking clothes, I got dressed in my work clothes. Guess today will be my rest day instead of tomorrow. Got a measles booster yesterday at the doc, didn’t know it’s a 2-parter & I have to go back in a couple of weeks. Also got a referral to the dermatologist for a thing on my scalp, doc said it looks like the non-dangerous kind (I can’t keep the names straight) but it does need to go. And we have a flu clinic here next week. Lots of medical stuff going on. So here’s Heal Me from Snow Patrol.

  11. It’s 71 in Fay., AR and isn’t supposed to get out of the 70s at all today. Sunny at the moment. Clouds supposed to move in during the afternoon. No rain, just clouds. sigh. Yesterday we generated another 11 KWHs and the m-t-d is 22 so starting the month on track. Early days yet.

Early days and yet so very too late on so many things. Political, environmental, and in the lives of my friends. My own issues are minor, relatively speaking. It was the washing machine water pump – parts and labor $351 or $15 less than what that pallet of wood bricks is gonna cost should they ever actually show up at Tractor Supply. My sinusitis mucks with my breathing just enough to be an irritant in the day time and muck with my sleep at night. (But still not as much mucking with my sleep as other folks are having.) My creakiness and issues with my hands make it difficult to do housework but not impossible so while my house is never thoroughly clean it’s also not a pigsty. Issues of living alone & not expected anywhere at any given time means I have periodic fears I’ll drop dead in my sleep and nobody will know about it for days while the cats starve but mostly I worry about my friends. And wish I could do more than the occasional bag of groceries or dogfood to help. sigh. But minor. The world – politics, environment, and my friends – have issues so major…well, music helps.

    Once the cat is off my lap a walk seems to be a good idea. Then coffee and a Black Forest muffin/bread square. I’ll tour the internets until Murf moves. heh. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

Bfitz, can you get one of those Life Lock things to wear around your neck? I think it gives off an alarm if you’re physically in trouble.

If that doesn’t suit, can you get a relative or a friend to call you every night at 9 p.m. to see whether you’re okay? My cousin in Abilene did that with her mum, my aunt. Finally my aunt moved to Abilene so she’d be nearer my cousin.

There must be some social service in your area that could help with that particular problem. Good luck!

      • {{{Diana}}} – I’m not worried about anything I could feel coming and I’m a light sleeper so I’d feel it coming. I’m worried about those totally out of the blue things like an embolism where you’re just all of the sudden gone with no warning at all. As to social services, well, this is AR. Not as bad as NM or NC, but not good. Right now my best friend lives across the street and while we don’t necessarily see each other daily it’s close enough to daily that she’d notice within 48 hours at most. But she’s trying to sell her house and move closer to her parents so she can take a fairer share of caring for them. Once she’s no longer across the street…I’ll think of something. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  12. Good morning, 54 and mostly cloudy in Bellingham. The leaves on our old maple trees are turning color overnight now so it’s officially fall. I have a few plants to dig into the ground but the soil is full of roots and rocks so Ron uses the shovel and I use the trowel. We’ll just dig in so deep and then mound top soil to secure the plants until their roots grow into the rocky soil.

Yesterday was a news overload and I didn’t screen as much as I should have. Seeing tRump’s unhinged performance was deeply disturbing. Best wishes to all for a light news day.

  13. Good Thor’s Day morning, Meese! Late getting here today, but here’s the weather report: the sky is covered with a soft blanket of gray cloud. At the moment our temp. is 78 F, on its way up to 82 F. Having just returned from my walk, I can report that it’s quite humid.

We’re about to go to Costco to see why my hearing aids aren’t performing as they should. It really is causing a problem.

Dearly has agreed to do after-school bus stop duty so I can attend the Communications Committee meeting this afternoon at 3. I wouldn’t mind occasionally skipping a meeting but unfortunately I won’t be able to attend the one two weeks from today either, as an excursion is planned.

Still reeling from the news. CNN, which Dearly enjoys watching, just announced that Thing now wants China to investigate corruption! Dear Goddess!

Bigly wishing a stable, rational day to all at the Pond. Dunno about Beyond.

  14. Good morning, Meesefolk; 50 when I got up [very reluctantly] this morning and going up to 64. My widget says there is only a 20% chance of rain today, but my widget and Mother Nature have clearly not talked, because it’s been raining non-stop since I got up. It’s steady but not heavy, but it is keeping things grey and chilly.

I had an interesting talk with the Kiddo yesterday. She attended/works at the college where the debate will be held next week. Her work schedule has gone from very busy to full-tilt insanity as a result; the college obviously views this as a chance to shine and get its name out, but it also is faced with accommodating the folks from CNN and the NYT. The CNN advance people are arriving this weekend, and because the theatre department is in the midst of a show at the auditorium where the debates will be held, they’ll be camping out in the library temporarily. Kiddo has also been informed that the Secret Service has recommended the library be closed the two days before/of the debate. Apparently securing libraries is a PITA (my only “knowledge” comes from National Treasure: Book of Secrets and the scene in the Library of Congress!). So Kiddo has to either use vacation days or work remotely those two days. It’s a very good thing she has almost of month of vacation time on the books. She’s also decided to not try to get tickets to the debate for reasons that are all too sad, but very much on the mind of people of her generation…she’s staying home, in part, because she feels like the debate is an active shooter magnet. I know her hyper-awareness is enhanced because of the planning sessions she’s had to be involved in, but it still breaks my heart that I can’t really argue with her logic.

Back to work; I got two resumes out yesterday, and I know there is at least one more I want to do today. I’ve covered my unemployment requirement, so it’s nice to have that minor pressure relieved. Now I just wait to see if I get any nibbles. Good day to and for all!

  15. Good afternoon Meeses. Long time no see. On Monday evening we got our data extraction done for going to the new cloud based library system. Spent Tuesday catching up on things I stopped doing so as to getting the big job done. I’m still on the Cataloging Work Group so we’re meeting soon (video conference) to start writing up procedures. It’s pretty quiet here in Costa Mesa. It’s nice and sunny outside with a slight breeze. Temp is 75.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 45 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 55. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

Another “too much news” day yesterday but the shape of the impeachment messaging is coming into focus. The right-wing has framed this as “U.S. president is asking other countries for help with corruption investigation” conveniently ignoring the “do me a favor” part of the Ukrainian phone call and the extortion involved in withholding military aid to force them to “help.” The thing that was nagging at me about the complete acceptance of this frame by Republican electeds was wouldn’t they fear that the same acceptance of interference would have to apply if a Democratic president did it? Then it struck me – they know that a Democratic president, at least the kind we have had over the past 80 years – would never do that! So they can safely solicit aid from foreign countries for political ends because they know it would only be used by them to get or keep power – something they can no longer achieve via honest elections. They really don’t care what institutions or norms – or allies – they destroy, the power to cut taxes and repeal regulations and create have-it-alls and have-nothings overrides everything.

The New York Times in an editorial entitled “Trump, the Self-Impeaching President” said that tRump has mastered The Art of Lying, called “defining deviancy down“: “one baldfaced presidential lie, once exposed, is an outrage; a thousand such lies is a statistic.” They opined that it would not end well for them, but, really I see no one able to stop them – especially when the Republican Party’s leaders are saying “this is fine”:

Mr. Trump seems to be operating on the assumption that the more shameless his assault on democratic norms and laws, the more he can get away with. This is not how the system works, no matter how fervently Mr. Trump’s Republican defenders may wish it so.

I hope we can stop them before “vote them out” becomes a quaint phrase from the past and our elections are just kabuki.

Busy morning as I am still not caught up from two days of projects that required me to set everything else aside. The “everything else set aside” is complaining about my neglect!

    See all y’all later!

  17. Friday Meese
