Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Oct. 20th through Oct. 26th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 43 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 61. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese
40 degrees here in Saugerties NY, going up to 55 with rain.

    Happy Kamala Birthday day :)
I’m trying to find something to be cheerful about.

  3. Puerto Rico

  4. Susan Rice really dragged Trump

  5. Yesterday was nice. Good meeting with one of the candidates running against my congressman. He seems like a good guy — he’s a doctor who is still seeing patients while campaigning. One cool thing — he had a trainer from the voter registration office come out, and several of his staff are deputy registrars, so they are registering people who come to the clinic. Anyway, today: there’s a lunch & meeting after church with Dr. Amy Laura Hall, she’s speaking on feminist theology. So I’m posting Ultraviolet, with the great speech beforehand

the women who stood up or sat down for their rights, who resisted & persisted

  6. Good un-“Sun”-day morning, Meese! Woke up to RAIN, blissful, lovely rain, which we need badly after our two-and-a-half month drought. It dried everything, the grass, the trees, and my brain. Now we can all be happy. The current temp. in Ashburn is 52 F., going up to 56 F. today.

On a gray day like this I’m thinking roast chicken, gravy, mashed potatoes (need hardly say the grocery store will have these already prepared), and green peas for dinner. Dearly will have warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream for dessert and I’ll have nothing at all. I had dessert yesterday.

We went for a drive in the country to look for apples and cider, found the apples all right. I was disappointed that there were no Mountaineer or Nittany apples to be had, so I bought Stayman and Cortland. The cider was the same kind of cloudy fresh stuff you can buy in the grocery store, but I wanted the clear golden kind we bought last year.

Moosekind, a thought occurred to me: Elizabeth Warren is said to be the front runner. Six women, two of whom have a serious shot at it, entered the race for POTUS. One of them is alleged to be the tool of Russian trolls, who are grooming her for a third-party run.

Am I the only one who is struck by the fact that the two previously mentioned are WOMEN? And that Thing’s nemeses are Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton, who are both WOMEN? And that two WOMEN testified for 10 hours each on the Hill in the impeachment inquiry?

Who made it seem normal for a woman to enter the presidential race and be taken seriously? HRC. She led the way, but the election was stolen from her.

And let me tell you something: I’m reading Ronan Farrow’s book, Catch and Kill. There IS a vast conspiracy, a conspiracy of rich, powerful MALES, who have no intention of giving up either their power or their sexual licentiousness. They look out for each other and protect each other. Any woman who dares to report sexual crimes is swiftly taken down. Any woman, like Hillary or Kamala and even Elizabeth, who dares to seek power, dares to step out of her accustomed “role” of unceasing and lifelong deference to men, is taken down. Reflect on that a moment.

And yet it’s women who’ve exhibited far more courage on the political scene than craven, turdish males.

Rant over. Busy day ahead with laundry and letter-writing, not to mention exercise after yesterday’s prolonged journey in a car.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • {{{Diane}}} – it’s race first & gender second although both are bad. That’s why more attacks as well as more erasure for women BIPOC. Both are part of the WASP male patriarchy – which is also what Aji calls the colonizer culture – that needs to be overcome and buried.

  7. It’s 55 heading for 75 in Fay., AR – sunny at the moment but clouds expected to move in late this afternoon. Which will hold the temps up – no nice bedtime fire for me this evening. Yesterday we only got 6.4 KWHs & m-t-d is 171.8 – maybe on track. But my friend took me out for lunch yesterday (& brought me bacon and a latte to augment my usual Sunday oatmeal) and my older son is taking me out for Indian food today. So a good birthday weekend even if no evening fire.

    I’m otherwise celebrating my birthday by doing my Sunday chores on Monday (tomorrow). 😁😁😁 And pretty much staying away from the news. Which I’d advise more folks to do actually. Knowing what is going on is one thing. Giving yourself adrenal exhaustion is another. But that’s my take on things. Sending out Healing/Helping Energy to everybody, shaped to their need. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning, 48 and raining in Bellingham. Heidi is snoozing and I’m trying to wake up, wishing coffee would magically appear :) The family is on the ferry now, headed home so my quiet house will soon be busy again. Heidi has been very careful walking with me but she’ll be glad to be back home and in her comfortable routine.

I’m going to try to focus on my sewing projects today. tRump angst is overwhelming me again so I need to avoid the news as best I can.

    Best wishes to all.

  9. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 50 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 59. Rain throughout the day.

A headline reminded me what I dislike about Robert Reich, Labor Secretary under Bill Clinton and left-of-the-left bad pundit and noted Obama hater: “Robert Reich / The Guardian: It’s Warren, Sanders or Biden vs Trump – all the other Democrats are irrelevant”. No, I won’t click it and give him the chance to make a case that his words are worthy of being published. It is several months away from the white people’s caucus that is supposed to declare the front-runner as the nominee for our not-that-white political party. PLUS it will not be Sanders and there is still a possibility that it won’t be Trump! Speaking of which, people calling the next Democratic president “46” might want to think of another way to do that shorthand – 46 might very well be Mike Pence. I am starting to wonder if the increasingly unhinged malignant narcissist in the Oval Office could become a political liability. Cotton-swab-head Pence – and a reopened primary for 2020 – might become an exit ramp for Republicans who are finding it more and more difficult to defend the crazy.

I find it interesting that the target of “asset of the Russians” (as opposed to “Russian asset” which has so many people melting down) Gabbard and the Twitter swarms is Kamala Harris. I suspect that she is the last person the Trump campaign wants to face. I am thinking about the possible lines of attack they will have if she is the nominee and many of them are dangerous. Do they really want to run against her being a “cop”, do they want to run against her race, do they want to run against her being a woman? I think we are finding out that the answer is no. Much easier to run against the left-of-the-left and the old pol gaffe machine Biden.

I now have a 6-inch tall to-do stack (pieces of paper with notes and screen shots describing issues, projects, and things to research) and it is threatening to tip over and bury my keyboard. I am afraid to see what is on the bottom of it and it is time to do a massive pruning where I take the stack and sort it out on the floor of my office. Very often it contains things that have already been done – and duplicates because I couldn’t remember if something was already in the stack! – and I am hoping that at least 3 inches of it is in that category. Another inch may be projects that have been cancelled or are for clients I no longer do work for. Probably a lot of it is lists which have been superseded a hundred times over and may only have one unfinished item on it. We shall soon find out!

    See all y’all later!

  10. Monday Meese.

Foggy and 52 here in the Catskills going up to 63. A friend is coming by this morning to drive me to see my husband in the hospital where he was moved to, 2 hours away- so I’m very happy, since I can’t do the drive myself.

Saw nothing in mainland media about this:

  11. Ugh, Firefox updated & decided not to remember any of my passwords. For me, that was the whole point of FF. I’m at work, eating overnight oats & drinking tea, and trying to only scratch minimally. Waiting for co-workers to start calling in sick, because “Monday”.

  12. Good Moon Day morning, Moosekind! Very cloudy here in Ashburn, but blue can be discerned beneath the cloud layer. It’ll clear up eventually. Right now it’s 53 F., going up to 67 F. later.

Never got the letters written yesterday, but did do the laundry, thank Goddess. It was starting to crawl out of our flat and down the hallway. Someone would have arrested it—or me—which would have been a blow.

Younger Son and family came to tea yesterday. They had just been visiting a bookstore, at Miss Pink Cheeks’ request. She also asks her mother to drive her to the Chantilly Public Library every Tuesday. (Crowing) A chip off the old block! In the days before ebooks, I used to visit bookstores too. I would wander the stacks in a trance, coveting this book, that book, and the other. When I worked (briefly) in a bookstore I simply handed my paycheck back when I received it: I bought so many books with the employee discount!

Anyway, Miss PC is seldom seen without a book in her hand. It’s usually about dragons, as she’s moved on from dog stories. Mr. Kindergartener can’t quite read yet, but he enjoys graphic novels, which we called “comic books” in my day. :)

Full day today—have an interview at 10 with the woman who started the genealogical society here, followed by exercise. This afternoon I want to drop by the postcard-writing party for an hour or so before I have to drive to Fairfax to meet the children at the school bus stop. DIL has announced her intention of going home to Beijing for the Christmas holidays. As she can’t afford to take the children with her, we’ll have to step into the breach. Younger Son will ask his office if he can work at home. Life is so difficult for working parents! (Unless they happen to be school teachers themselves.)

Just read about Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Afghanistan, that Goddess-forsaken piece of desert. Still, the Afghans seem to like it. Remember, she couldn’t go in January when she wanted to because Thing wouldn’t let her fly on a military jet, and it’s too dangerous for the Speaker to fly by commercial jet.

Daydream: She is preparing to be president because she knows Thing and Tuppence are going down and she is third in line. Daydream with a cherry on top: She chooses Hillary as her veep, which she is entitled to do if I remember correctly.

And with that, I’ll say à la prochaine! Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  13. It’s 50 heading for 65 outside but still holding at 68 inside from yesterday. Clouds moved in just before sunset and held the temps up – it was still over 70 outside when I went to bed. We got 9.5 KWHs yesterday. The m-t-d is 181. If we average 7/day for the rest of the month we’ll make the 250 goal.

I had a very nice birthday yesterday (weekend including my friend taking me to lunch & a present arriving in the mail Saturday). My friend “augmented” my usual Sunday breakfast, my younger son called, my older son took me to late lunch/early dinner (& we sat in the parking lot and talked for almost 3 hours), then one of my sisters called after I got home. And while it’s not a present for me, it was definitely good news about Bobby. (Yesterday he moved out of San Juan into a homeless men’s assistance program just up mountain from Caguas where he and Juan had their first restaurant. It’s an up-to-18 month program with counseling, abuse treatment if needed, training, and other stuff to help men get back on their feet. Bobby said it’s clean – which considering what he’s been living in is already a bonus – & has beautiful grounds, the view is beautiful, the people seem nice, it’s calm, and everybody loves MissyLu. I don’t know if he’s hoping for this, but I’m hoping that since the place has a cafeteria and feeds everybody cafeteria style he’ll actually get a job there doing the cooking. He said the director seemed excited when he told her he used to have a restaurant in Caguas. So. Good news at last for him. & I’ll quit worrying about him – at least for a while.)

As to out in the world, well, Evil Ones being Evil. Very noisily evil right now when they can let twitler take all the blame. It’s been my opinion for some time that they really want Pence in power (& he’s actually the power behind the scenes – somebody filled out those blank E.O.s twitler signed – already) but they need to be able to blame us Dems for taking twitler down. Which is why I’m glad Pelosi is absolutely going by the Book on this. If she can whip in enough R votes so it goes to the Senate as bi-partisan, twitler might get removed – but that will take enough R votes there will be no way to blame it on the Dems.

    Anyway, new week, the sun is shining even if it’s a bit chilly out there. My hands aren’t happy but I’ll manage. Definitely will be having a fire this evening and that will make a bunch of difference. Healing Energy to everybody shaped to their need. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  14. Good morning, 55 and raining in Bellingham. I want to work in the garden today, but tomorrow is supposed to be sunny so I should wait. The garden is full of wet leaves, wilted hostas, and heavy branches to close to the walk ways. My mental health needs a gardening boost but I’ll need one tomorrow too!

Best wishes to all on the rainy Monday.

  15. Tuesday Meese.

55 going up to 57 with rain here in the Catskills.

    About those Emails

    Puerto Rico

    • Dee, if the Dems succeed in taking the House, the Senate, and the presidency, I hope they’ll go after those fiends in charge of PR funds with a vengeance. Hope they sue the pants of the miscreants and award the funds to PR for infrastructure and everything else.

  17. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 46 degrees (feels like 39) in Madison with an expected daytime high of 46. It is raining and blustery and that will be todays weather as well. It was difficult sleeping with the wind – there were really no breaks. I am very glad I took time last week to admire the brilliant fall foliage in our immediate area – this is the kind of weather that takes down a lot of leaves.

Justin Trudeau won a second term which is good news for the world. There should be at least one North American leader who represents the values of the majority of our continent. And I need Canada to stay a refuge in the event that the United States is no longer a safe place to live.

I am going to ignore the 2020 primary for a while. It is not just “silly season” it is “silliest season”. I do hope that voters in Iowa and New Hampshire care that Mayo Pete is using Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg as a campaign advisor. Sure, make an alliance with a guy willing to ratfk 2020 in order to save money on taxes. Deplorable.

Busy day of a busy week – I will open a few stories in tabs to get back to if there is time but I suspect there won’t be. I think I have to travel twice this week – I am hoping just once but I have to first convince a client that Friday will be a better day to do their work than Wednesday. Fingers crossed!

    See all y’all later!

      • I was so busy fighting the alligators yesterday, I did not get to “draining the swamp”, in my case, sorting my to-do stack. I think it will have to wait until Saturday when the only distractions are of my own making. It is probably better to do it in one sitting so that there are no big messes if I get pulled away on a crisis.

    • Bernie’s CA Grassroot director tweeted her take on Canada election – is getting pushback

  18. Good Tiu’s Day morning, Meese! I like the new weather widget I downloaded in Ashburn because it tells me right away what the temperature is, 57 F. It’s cloudy this morning with rain expected later. Ordinarily I love rain, but the thought of driving through the traffic in it does not thrill me at all. The high will be 64 F. today.

Yesterday was interesting. Interviewed the woman who started the genealogical society here and she turned out to be fascinating. She has Russian forebears, so she told me a Russian proverb: “After the wolf comes the bear,” which means, “No matter how bad things are at the moment, they’re going to get worse.” OMG! I was out of reach yesterday, no opp to keep up with the news, so this morning I heard Thing is threatening to make war on Turkey!

The idiot, he’s supposed to be pardoning turkeys, not making war on them.

Yesterday Fed Ex told me the sample booklet was ready so I went to look at it. It looks fabulous! It’s larger than I visualized it, but no matter. The color pictures came out very well. I’ll have to charge $10 for each of them but it’s for a good cause. I had a thought: I’ll get Miss Pink Cheeks to help me sell them. She’s so cute people just gravitate to her, so I might be able to sell a few because of her appeal. We’ll see.

The nice man who did the desktop publishing refused to accept payment so I told him I’d look after his three daughters free of charge next time he and his wife want a date night. The girls love the Dictionary Game to which I introduced them.

Never made it to the postcard-writing party yesterday so will go today from 10 to 12. Y’know, one interesting point about living here is that a lot of us destroy the myth that old people are frail and dithery, bedridden all day, and simply waiting to pop their clogs. Not so. The woman I interviewed yesterday is 83 and still raring to go! It’s true that she has limited mobility but there’s nothing wrong with her mind. She’s written two books about the history of the little Russian village her forebears came from.

Also on the agenda today is making the chicken pot pie that I’ll pop into the oven when I straggle through the door this evening. Man, I really want a writing weekend! Hope to get one this coming Saturday and Sunday.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and beyond.

    P. S. One of my Canadian friends wrote yesterday, saying how afraid she was that Trudeau wouldn’t get in again. It seems his opponent was a real piece of work, along Thingian lines. Luckily Pierre the Adorable will be part of a minority coalition.

      • I had on the CBC a bit last night but had to change the channel to something mindless on HGTV. I found I was so stressed by the early results from the Atlantic ridings that it was painful. I’m seeing already that I’m going to have issues in 2020; if I can’t watch Canadian election results, I have no idea how I’m going to survive our primaries or general.

        • We will not survive in real time. I am going to have some sporting events on my DVR to watch and shut off my phone. I am still not over the trauma of election night 2016 and have PTSD surrounding it! Heck, I still have PTSD from the 2000 election!!

          • Yeah. I remember 2000 way too well and as for 2016…I’m not even going to be online. A nice mystery or some other planet science fantasy by the fire on election night. The morning will be soon enough to know.
