Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Jan. 5th through Jan. 11th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Way to go, Tammy!!!

    From her CNN interview reacting to Republicans calling Democrats “terrorist lovers”:

  2. Upper 50s heading for mid 60s in Fay., AR and actually sunny at the moment. A blessed break in the clouds and rain that was not in last night’s forecast. Clouds and rain are both due back in a couple of hours and the temps will start dropping shortly after they get here. Yesterday we did manage to generate a bit over 2 KWhs and reach 50.8 cum for the month. We’ll see what today brings.

    As far as humans go, the world’s in a mess. I’m not sure we can survive the mess we made. As a nation or a species. On that too we shall see what we shall see. The honeysuckle has leafed out here. Also some of the hardiest grasses are greening up. The green mist that “normally” happens in March happened before Xmas. Maybe the hard freeze we’re supposed to have tomorrow night/Sunday morning will take it down again. Maybe it won’t. Bugs and pollen are out and more virulent than a few decades back. Nature’s making it damned uncomfortable even where it’s not down right deadly in response to all the harm we’ve/our colonizer culture’s caused. My personal friends are making it. Not comfortable but making it. Prayers and invocations and Channeling to Heal/make things better.

    I’ve a house of sleeping cats. When the one who is sleeping on my lap wakes up and gets off I do need to deal with some cat barf. sigh. And make coffee. But I’ll read my way through diaries and tweets until he does. And come back to finish if I haven’t already once I’ve got some coffee in my system. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  3. Good morning, 40, wind, rain, and snow in Bellingham. I feel the cold wind in my creaky joints so I’ll stay indoors and warm today and hope the snow stays at higher elevations.

    I slept late yesterday and was then late for everything, so the day got away from me and I didn’t get back to the moose. Diana and bfitz, thanks for your kind thoughts. RonK and I want to keep living here as long as we can, but the discussion re what to do next isn’t easy. Fortunately my knees improving and are allowing me to walk and climb the stairs with less pain now so we don’t need to make a hasty decision. But we do need to keep talking and planning so when/if life happens we can do what we need to do.
    Best wishes to all on this blustery winter day.

    • {{{princesspat}}} alternatives and back-up plans – options, choices – that’s true freedom. And riches – at least for me since my first instinct when “life happens” is to panic imagining the worst-case scenario. Already having a plan in place keeps that from happening. (Otherwise I have to call upon my mother’s voice in my mind to talk me down. Or rather back up.) Glad you are improving and can handle the stairs now. Healing Energy and more {{{HUGS}}}

      • Best wishes, princesspat! Take it easy.

        I’ve been putting off writing that blog (1) for fear of sounding like an overprivileged old white b*tch, and (2) because far more important news has been in the forefront. But in March it’ll be two years since we moved here so, if I ever write it, it should be soon.

  4. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 28 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 23. The forecast called for a winter storm dumping up to 9 inches of snow on the area but snow forecasts are tricky things. It appears that we got about 3 to 4 inches overnight but my weather widget now says “light snow” which make is unlikely that we will get 9. I am hoping that the line moves in a different direction because I need to go somewhere tomorrow morning and it can’t be put off.

    So tRump’s “Iran targeted our embassy” became “some embassies” then “four embassies” and will soon be “all embassies everywhere.” There is literally no reason to believe anything he says, he lies about everything and everyone knows it.

    Nancy Pelosi is setting up a floor vote on Wednesday to assign impeachment managers and transmit the current articles of impeachment to the Senate so that the trial can begin. She extracted the maximum amount of pressure she could and got Mitch McChinless to show his hand: he has indicated that he will immediately move to dismiss the articles without a trial. Good, get those guys on record and tick off the 70% who want a fair trial on these serious charges. tRump says he will block John Bolton from testifying so even if the Senate did call witnesses it would not be him because they would never cross their boss. The other witnesses that we wanted to hear from are also blocked by “executive privilege” which now encompasses “anything that could embarrass Trump.” I hope that the House committees continue to investigate and make sure that the public knows that there is a criminal in the White House using the power of our government for his own personal benefit.

    Gak! Iowa is berning down. Not surprising in that he ended in a virtual tie there in 2016 in the undemocratic caucuses that exclude old people, working people and people with disabilities. Undemocratic process for the non-Democrat – easily ignored. The primary season won’t really start until South Carolina and Nevada. Sorry, 95% white states, you don’t speak for most Democrats!

    The Democratic Party Weekly Address is by Congresswoman Debbie Dingell talking about the war powers resolution and the other bills the House has passed last week. I will put up our Fighting Back later this morning – I have a couple of things to do first.

    See all y’all later!

    • Puerto Rico seems CURSED. Goddess knows why, they’re not at fault. I wish the Resident could share in some of their misfortune but he keeps on flourishing like the legendary green bay tree.

      If poor old PR can just hang on somehow until next January, its fortunes may look very different.

      How are you, Dee? Can you eat yet?

  5. Good gray Saturn’s Day, Meese! Naturally, I missed the full moon last night because as usual it was foggy here. Tonight there’s supposed to be rain. Current temp. in Ashburn is 53 F., going up to 67 F. later. This is January?

    Feeling somewhat depressed this morning because the thought of Unca Joe as the eventual nominee is so uninspiring that I can’t be bothered to become enthusiastic. Another old white guy! I really despise Tom Perez, and wish someone would rout him out as head of the DNC. I hate his “debate” rules too. I’d like to see a much more diverse slate of candidates. I also wish there national runoff voting.

    At least with the Dems in control in Virginia we’re likely to get “no excuse” absentee voting, something other states have had for years.

    Hoping to go back to the gym today. We’re having dinner tonight at one of the restaurants here with our friend from down the hall. I really need to watch a YouTube video about working out with free weights so I won’t go on feeling like a Tyrannosaurus Rex—a large, ungainly derrière and tiny, useless arms.

    Wishing a good day to all Pond dwellers!

  6. I got more than $200 in donations yesterday, not bad. We had thunderstorms & some hail last night, but that’s gone. Now it’s cold & windy, will be a sunny day. I’m going to do a workout at some point today — may do 30 minutes in the gym then see how many repeats I can do on the track. In the afternoon, though, because it is much colder than it was yesterday.

    • {{{another}}} Happy Birthday! 👍✨🎉🎁🎶💖 Glad you got a decent donation day. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  7. We’re safe in Fay., AR. More than can be said for elsewhere – for many reasons. We’re right at freezing – which is the high for the day – and so overcast the PV system is still in night mode. Probably won’t come out either. sigh. We got 1.4 KWHs yesterday and at 52 for the m-t-d. It’s not raining at the moment although we got over 2″ last night on this side of town and flooding elsewhere. Apparently a tornado came through on the southeast side of town. The widget says more rain in a bit turning to snow through tomorrow morning. Diddly accumulation so that’s OK. Or more or less OK. We don’t depend on snow for our summer water here. Or rather we don’t depend on local snow for our summer water.

    Aji was pretty much in despair last night so I checked early this morning. They’ve made a sale, enough get them through the month even with Wings’s new, $600/month, totally out-of-pocket insulin so that’s good. But Wings’s needs $33K in dental work and…prayers and invocations. That’s more than double my entire annual Social Security benefit. And of course Amelia still needs a place to live. She’s also OK through the end of the month (well, until the 30th) but…more prayers and invocations. Everybody else is living indoors and as far as I know not in danger of eviction. Need money for one thing or another, mostly health stuff, but not as much or as urgent. Still…prayers and invocations. And as for what’s going on in the larger world…definitely prayers and invocations.

    So. Time for coffee. Maybe some Ibuprofen too as I’m fighting a headache. Then read stuff around the internet and boost what I can to help. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • My brother says it’s snowing in Plano – and now “it’s snowing” is trending on twitter. Hail & thunderstorms up there last night, snow this morning. Crazy.

  8. Good morning, 41 and raining in Bellingham. Weather forecasters warnings of snow have RonK in winter worry mode, but so far I just see rain outside my window. And I’ll believe it’s snowing when I see it happen :)

    I’m feeling restless and home bound this morning, but rest and elevation for most of the day is making my knees feel better so I’d best stay with the program for a few more days before I try to resume more normal activity. I’ll be a solitaire pro by the time I hobble forth into the world again!

    Best wishes to all on this rainy/will it snow day.
