Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Jan. 12th through Jan. 18th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, 21 and mostly sunny in Bellingham. There’s a few inches of new snow on the ground, but the forecast is for temps in the 40’s and rain, yay! We did go to the bookstore cafe for lunch yesterday and while it was good to be out and about it was slippery and my legs did not like the cold.

    I have some errands to do today so my son will drive and we’ll visit a favorite taco spot for lunch. And then I’ll come home to nap and recover. Such is life!

    Best wishes to all on this cold but sunny day.

    • {{{princesspat}}} It’s always nice to have a son/kid drive and for company doing the errands. Yesterday my son drove us while I visited the bank, USPS, and 4 grocery stores. Very pleasant. Then he took the car (rain & cold really are not good motorcycle weather) and I spent the afternoon dealing with purchases and recovering. 😊👍 moar {{{HUGS}}}

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 28 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 32. Today’s forecast calls for freezing rain, then flurries on top of what looks to be about 3 to 4 inches of snow that fell yesterday and overnight. I don’t have to go anywhere today so that is a blessing.

    I can’t find the Democratic Party’s Weekly Address because it is the Senate’s turn and Democratic leadership in the Senate is essentially useless. So I will post a tweet of Kamala Harris calling for Republicans to care about the integrity of the Constitution and the Senate. She may as well be asking circus clowns to show some gravitas – the Republican-controlled Senate is not the “saucer that cools the hot tea of the House” but more the nuclear detonation that destroyed a once proud nation.

    I would caution people to not lionize Lev Parnas or to take everything he says as true. He is a con man trying to con his way out of responsibility for his crimes. Let the evidence speak for itself and don’t pass on embellishments that are not supported by the facts. That one of the characters in the drama appears to have serious mental health problems should be a red flag. I did laugh out loud to read that Ken Starr and Alan Dershowitz will be joining tRump’s legal team. Nothing says “I am a good and decent man” more clearly than hiring the guy who lost his job at Baylor because he covered up a rape culture in his athletic department and the guy who is not just the lawyer for but a friend of serial pedophile and human cesspool Jeffrey Epstein. Good lord, have they no mirror?

    I got most of my “must do” projects done this past week and today I will sort through the scraps of paper that landed on my desk and organize them into a reasonable to-do list for next week. It is difficult to believe that we are already past the midpoint of January!

    See all y’all later!

    • I feel kind of bad that when I saw Ken Starr’s name trending yesterday, I hoped it was because he died. Hearing his name, hearing him talking in the news is going to be difficult. I thought he was a sleaze & fanatic back in the ’90s, but the stuff that has come out about his investigation since…. He is a horrifying person, on par with the 16th century witch hunters, or the Inquisitors. And that’s even before Baylor. That he still walks the earth when so many good people have moved on…..

  3. Saturday Meese.

    Sitting here waiting for the snow to start falling. It is 27 degrees here in the Catskills.

  4. Good morning, Meese, woke up far too early. When I rose at 5 a.m. there were no snowflakes in the sky but they did fall later—to some extent. It was a namby-pamby “dusting,” not even a powdered-sugar snow like the one we had a couple of weeks ago.

    However, the sky is gray, the temperature at 10 a.m. is 27 F., and a wave of sleet and freezing rain is supposed to hit this afternoon. This is a good day not to go out!

    Luckily, I won’t have to. I can walk to the Progressives’ Luncheon and the Cherry Blossom living room inside the buildings. Right now I’m very sleepy and yawning my head off, but will somehow have to manage until 1:30.

    This was meant to be a productive day. Huh! I had intended to finish the article I’m working on, and to type up the notes on the delightful man I interviewed yesterday. This home for the aged abounds with ex-employees of The Agency—yes, that agency. Did I mention that the man I interviewed yesterday had a run-in with the KGB in Rumania years ago and has done things he can’t even talk about? I love to read about spooks and spies.

    Well, I do need to rest before I get ready, so will wish everyone a good day.

  5. It’s 46 in Fay., AR – which is the high for the day. Gonna slowly drift down until sundown then drop into the mid 20s overnight. Overcast again but seems to be trying to clear off. That would be nice. We got under a KWH yesterday. Not quite the lowest for the month but close. The m-t-d is 83.57 which is not good as we haven’t generated as much electricity as I’ve used so far this month. sigh.

    Everybody keeps on truckin’ and I guess that’s the best we can do. Sorta like that ice highway up in Canada. Slowly. With the door open. So we can jump out if the ice starts to break up and try not to go down with the truck. I guess in a sense my Channeling/prayers/invocations amount to “let this convoy get across then shut down the road before the next one starts” – although how that works out in the grand scheme of things I’m not sure. Pretty much “let us get through this dangerous situation and then change the circumstances” I guess. Not something we’ve had an opportunity to do – either in small like Aji’s or Amelia’s situations or in large like our national one. The hits keep coming non-stop. So I keep Channeling/praying/invoking.

    A pensive day sort of. 31 years ago this morning Momma “walked on” – my Xtian aunt would have said “took flight” and that’s a fancy I can sort of work with. Momma never liked flying, never did it until in her 40s. & most of the times she did, I took her to the airport and stayed with her (old, pre-9/11 days) until she boarded, stood in the window where she could see me from the plane, stayed until the plane took off “praying her up”. I was with her this time too. When she stopped breathing. I guess “praying her up” works as well as anything else. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Watching Joy Reid & eating breakfast. I’ve already done a load of laundry, got to fill the dishwasher & run it so I can make next week’s tea. And the Women’s March (actually a rally) is at the Capitol this afternoon. Busy day. Oh — and I not only did 12 repeats of walk/run last night, but I ran for a whole minute on the last one! Yay me! (and thank you to U2, because City of Blinding Lights is what made that possible)

  7. Good morning, 37 and cloudy in Bellingham. We are now in the “wait for rain” part of winter, because that is how side streets and hills are finally cleared of ice and snow. I enjoyed getting out of the house yesterday and my legs did better navigating the icy slush so that was encouraging as well.

    I’ve been ignoring my to do lists lately but now that I’m starting to feel better I had best start paying attention to my desk. And it’s time for the Christmas Spode to go back into the cupboard. So as soon as I get going I’ll have a relatively busy day. My best wishes to all.
