Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Apr. 5th through Apr. 11th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

Morning low of 28 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 54. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Sunday Meese 50 degrees here in Saugerties NY going up to 63

    Puerto Rico

  4. Another cold morning — trying to savor these, because soon enough I won’t remember how “cold” feels (it’s hot well into October here, so I really do forget cold). Palm Sunday. Wonder if this time next year, we’ll be extra thankful. Today: church on Facebook, get in a walk since the rain has stopped, and my congressional candidate has a Facebook thing also.

  5. Good Sunday morning, Meese, although it’s nearly noon. I’ve a cake in the oven, clean sheets on the bed, some laundry drying, more laundry waiting, and boring stuff like that. This morning I cut my own hair, at least the front part. I hate the idea that one day I’m going to look like Cousin Itt! My gray hair is very dry and fuzzy and generally looks quite awful. However—(cheering up)—who’s going to notice? No one!

This morning, as I was finishing breakfast, I gagged twice. I was convinced that I was going to throw up. “Oh, no,” I thought, “I’ve got the digestive symptoms of COVID-19!” Shortly after that I had a headache and a backache, so I took two aspirin. A little while later, the symptoms disappeared. I’m thinking it’s just stress. This morning I had a message from NextDoor that an employee at the store where I shopped last Thursday had tested positive for coronavirus. The employee was asymptomatic, so continued to work. Duhh! More than ever, I must overcome my natural disinclination to do any work and organize those financial papers!

The news continues to worsen. Can’t say anything intelligent, so I just won’t say anything.

Wishing a good, quiet, stress-free Sunday to all.

    • I purchased a set of hair cutting combs which will measure the length evenly so I can cut my hair. They should arrive on Wednesday and I just hope I can make it that long!! It is driving me crazy.

        • I will report back after I try them! I found them on the Amazon site while I was searching for “home haircut products” but from there they would not be delivered until May 9th – by then it would be too late to protect my mental health. :) So I located the actual company (in Canada) to order from and they should arrive by the end of the week. I have pretty short hair so they should be fine for my needs – I don’t think they will work for a longer haired person.

  6. Good morning, 43 and mostly cloudy in Bellingham. I found my way through a local garden shop’s hastily created website yesterday and successfully placed an order for viola’s and veggie starts. RonK picked up the plants at the given time so today I’ve got some flowers to plant in the pots by the back entrance. The soil is still cold and wet, but violas will grow and give some color to the ferns and other perennials growing in the pots year around.

My sleep every 3-4 hours pattern is still persisting, but the hours add up to lots of sleep. In between naps I seem to need quiet time so my life is very low key but that’s ok.

Best wishes to all on this quiet Sunday morning.

  7. It’s 51 heading for 65 and overcast. Again. Yesterday we got 3.98 KWHs and the m-t-d is 36. sigh. I guess I really did need the iron. I had enough energy this morning to do all my Sunday chores without having to stop for a rest. But having energy doesn’t make me any stronger or less clumsy so it still takes as long or longer to do it. There’re done now for another. So YAY! 😁😁😁

Good news about Amelia – with the “due date” pushed out until tomorrow her Social Security check and some help from her mom will cover the rest of April. She called last night so very happy about that. And relieved of course. She’s feeling so much better – the more she reads of COVID-19 symptoms from folks who’ve had & recovered from it the more she thinks that’s what she’s finally recovering from – and hopes to be a lot more productive this month. Get back to the doctor and get her meds. Re-connect with her Yale alumni FB friends so they know what’s going on (instead of just a panic-stricken plea for money at the last minute). Last year before the new owners of the complex she lived in decided they didn’t want to do Section 8 & evicted her she’d hoped to make the reunion this year. Best-laid plans and all that. The reunion’s been canceled anyway. Aji of course needs patrons and sales desperately. They used all their savings to get ready – and help some Elders and disabled neighbors get ready – for the shut down – and now have to deal with taxes, their own meds & doctor appts so they can get the meds, and utility bills. Others, well, they’re hanging on as best they can. Prayer, invocations, whatever your Tradition calls it – all are welcome. And needed.

    My friend came over yesterday to get her dolly (one of 2 – she’ll have to come back for the other one as it didn’t show up on my carport until after she’d gone) the current owner of her old house returned via me. She brought me a latte from McDonalds – figured their machine rather than a real barista would be safe. She’s got (& was wearing) the no-sew mask from the link I sent her and we stayed 6′ apart to visit. I picked up the coffee container, poured the coffee into my own mug, trashed the container, and washed my hands. That’s maybe pushing it but I hope not. McDonald’s “McCafe” machine doesn’t do great espresso drinks but machine-to-cup with no barista is about as safe as it’s gonna get and makes a treat. Anyway, I’m gonna tour the internets and visit the Sunday Sermon. Healing/Helping Energy to everybody. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  9. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

It is 37 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 55. Cloudy this morning with showers this afternoon and into the evening. I am glad I got some time in the sun on my deck yesterday afternoon – we might not see if again for a few days.

I was encouraged to see that the national press is not falling for the bs that the Wisconsin legislature was putting out about the election here tomorrow. No, it is not Governor Tony Evers fault for waiting – he kept hoping that legislators would come to their senses and provide a mail-in alternative for April 7th. When it was obvious that they wouldn’t, he called a special session to delay the election – the Republicans showed up, flipped him (and us) off and went home. That they don’t understand how serious this is was evidenced by their letter to the governor asking him to “reopen churches for Easter and Passover.” JHC on a popsicle stick! The Republicans really are a death cult – anything to prop up their president*. And as another example that Wisconsin is a failed democracy, the letterhead for Republican legislators is “Wisconsin Legislature”, completely ignoring that there are elected Democrats, although very few because of the surgical partisan gerrymanders that they put in place that gives them a 60% majority even though votes for Democrats statewide were 53%. It is really unfixable – we are just logging time until we can cash in on the money we have invested in the university system and in-state tuition. Regarding college, I suspect that Fall 2020 will be online classes again in an abundance of caution. The moving-people-in then moving-people-out is pretty expensive and having them stay home might be best. If the virus is contained by the end of the year, Spring 2021 might be “normal”. I have no idea how incoming freshman will be able to deal with it.

I am experimenting with online grocery ordering and pickup options in advance of what they are saying will be the toughest two weeks since the pandemic hit the United States. I want to have the procedure down so I am not scrambling. My first pickup will be Thursday morning during senior hours. Fingers crossed that they are able to fill my order completely!

    See all y’all later!

  10. Going to warm up today, and it’s supposed to be 90 tomorrow. Got to get in 8-ish hours working from home. But I’ll get in a walk — did 2.1 miles yesterday. The singer from Snow Patrol has been doing a weekly song write, last week’s turned out really well.

  11. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! Right now in Ashburn we have 56 F., partly cloudy skies, and are expecting a high near 70 F. This is supposed to be the nicest day of the week.

This morning at 5:30 when I took Monty out to the courtyard the dark sky was speckled with puffy clouds: it reminded me of Floating Island Pudding—you know, the one with puffs of meringue on top of the custard base. Anyway, those clouds have mostly gone and now we have no clouds at all.

Didn’t get much done yesterday except laundry and changing the sheets on the bed. Today I really must do better. I’m still looking for bathroom tissue but so far have been unable to order any on line except from Amazon. That shipment is coming from China (a fact I failed to notice when I ordered it) and will be here in late May or June. Duh. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, my only option is calling the concierge to order toilet paper and a quart of milk. Our on-campus CVS is closed to customers but one can order through the concierges.

The big news yesterday was that two of the residents have tested positive for COVID-19. They are being cared for at our on-campus nursing facility and everyone they came in contact with has been notified.

I didn’t get a walk in yesterday so really need one today but I’ll wear a mask when I go out.

The maleficent Wisconsin Rethugs make me want to yank the hair right off my head! (Wouldn’t need a haircut, then.) Why doesn’t evil ever happen to the creeps who deserve it? Wish karma would make sure they get what’s coming to them.

And on that cheerful note, it’s time for coffee and breakfast. Wishing everyone as good a day as possible.

    • Oh, no! “two of the residents have tested positive for COVID-19.” It was probably only a matter of time – I hope they were not people you came in contact with. Fingers crossed!!

  12. It’s 53 heading for 73 and mostly sunny at the moment but the clouds are already moving in again. Yesterday we got over 6 KWHs so more than I used (I hope – yesterday was chores day) and the m-t-d is not quite 42. Not on track for even 300. This is being an overcast year on many fronts.

The Queen must feel really strange doing this kind of broadcast again 80 years after her first one. I remember Momma telling me about broadcasts by “The Princesses” she listened to as a kid. The broadcasts were transmitted overseas by short-wave then picked up by the networks here. Given differences in age, country, and gender (& that Joe’s is also a campaign video) the tone of both hers and Joe’s were very similar. I suppose that’s not surprising. Amazing/amusing how encouraging and comforting that obvious propaganda is. But then, that’s what it’s for.

Everybody is doing their best and hanging in there. Witches of the New Forest time – and has been for some months. Except I don’t think we’ve been Channeling on the same wave length. The Energy has been scattered and not focused as it needs to be. Perhaps COVID-19 will bring that focus. For just about everything else Aji’s new slogan is pretty much it – #maskup#gloveup#staythefuckhome – Suzanne/ashirs nani sent me a link to a no-sew mask made from a handkerchief or bandana and 2 hair ties (I suppose rubber bands would work) and I’ve been passing that around on Twitter. I hope it’s helping. We will never stop the Deplorables from spreading the disease but if enough people follow the guidelines we’ll slow it down enough to deal with it. I can’t say with minimal loss of life because that ship already sailed. But with much less than maximum loss of life is still possible.

    And so much for the sunshine. It’s clouded up as I’ve been typing. sigh. But it’s still relatively warm so that part’s good. Healing/Helping Energy to everybody. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  13. Good morning, 40 and mostly sunny in Bellingham. RonK just left for a walk in the woods and I’m lingering with my coffee. I absolutely have to work at my desk today and feelings of avoidance are growing. Best to stay calm about such tasks but that’s my goal not my reality!

Our son continues to improve, but the guidelines re when it safe to resume normal activities are not clear. His fever is long gone, but he is still aching and coughing so he’s continuing to stay isolated. I’ve been so focused COVID quarantine I forget the state wide stay at home order is in effect too and that means he can’t go back to work even if he does feel like he could. What a worrisome mess.

Best wishes to all as we make it through another Monday.

  14. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

It is 50 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 72! Chance of thunderstorms as the warm front moves through the area but clear tonight.

Today is election day in Wisconsin. The U.S. Supreme Court, which cancelled their own in-person hearings because of the concern over coronavirus, ruled that Wisconsin voters must vote in-person in the middle of a pandemic because Republican rules for elections trump common sense and safety. Absentee ballots are still in the mail going to those who requested them but instead of letting those ballots reach the voters and giving them time for the mail service to get them back, the ballots have to be postmarked by today in order to be counted. Thousands of ballots have been lost in the mail (I never got the first one I requested and got a replacement). The worst thing is that the process of requesting a ballot requires a computer and getting a ballot to the post office today will require transportation, disenfranchising thousands. It will be interesting to see how may people mask up and brave the polls – both in the cities and in the hinterlands; a 10-year term for Scott Walker’s chosen Supreme Court justice is on the line. If he wins, the court will have a 5-2 Republican majority for at least another 6 years – if our candidate wins, the court will be 4-3 and we could regain the majority in 2022. One thing is certain, the path forward has been illuminated – Wisconsin Democrats need to get all of our voters registered on-line and absentee ballots requested for the next two elections. The courts won’t help us because the courts are Republican and low-turnout, people-with-computers only elections benefit their candidates.

I need to turn off the news cycle for a couple of days because it is infuriating. I am going to sort people into two groups – the group of people who advocate for “everyone should get sick and the disease should run its course” plus those who say that the economy is more important than saving human lives (as if it is a binary choice, which it isn’t) – and everyone else. May karma visit those in the first group as it found Boris Johnson and deal with them fairly. And may the goddess keep the rest of us safe from ignorant people.

    See all y’all later!
