Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 7th through June 13th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 55 degrees in Madison WI with an expected daytime high of 77. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

  2. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! It’s beautiful here, with sunlight, blue skies, the lot. Right now in Ashburn it’s a mild 62 F., on its way up to 81 F.

    Visited my plot in the community garden yesterday to find all three tomato plants, their guardian marigolds, and the lone zucchini looking very healthy. Must get down there and water them today.

    Quarantine fatigue is feeling oppressive. I really feel the need to just get out and go somewhere, but am afraid to do that. Perhaps we can simply go for a drive in the car.

    The extent and longevity of the protests have awakened hope that this time things really will change. What I’d like to see is a 20-year Democratic lock on all three branches of government so we could make some enduring changes in this country.

    Wishing a nice, peaceful day to all at the Pond.

  3. Sunday Meese. 59 going up to 76 here in the Catskills.

    Was elated to see this tweet from Kamala Harris

  4. Protests continue peaceful in Austin. They may fade out this week, because we’re expecting record highs because we’re on the wrong side of that tropical storm. Anyway, I’m watching the news, waiting for church to start. Today’s sermon: Repenting of America’s Original Sin. And all of June, we’re focusing on dismantling racism.

  5. It felt cool at dawn (when I checked just now “cool” was 67 degrees) so I got up and did all my housework. Including the vacuuming. Especially the vacuuming. Now I’m settling in, with breakfast, for some computer time. heh. It’s currently 78 and I’ll close the house up in another degree or so. Yesterday we generated 22 KWHs and the m-t-d is 125 – on track and so nice to be so. Maybe a sign of the times or something, generating more power/Power. My grandmother used to say, when anyone was trying to do something good, “More Power to you”. Well, definitely “more Power” to the protests and protesters to actually shift our trajectory – even if it’s to land us in the water instead of smashing on the rocks if we have gone over the edge. As long as we’re living there’s hope of getting on a better road to a better space.

    I’m OK – sometimes I feel guilty for that – but a whole lot of people aren’t. Giving driblets of money and Channeling a might river of Healing/Helping Energy are what I can do so that’s what I am doing. And boosting stuff on Twitter. It doesn’t feel like much but maybe, combined with everybody else’s efforts, it will be enough. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good morning, 54 and raining in Bellingham. Our son’s moving saga continues with a family push at the new house today. One of the movers got sick yesterday so a new crew was needed and that made for a long day. Between all the boxes of books and the antiques it was not a fast or easy move. RonK and I stayed out of the way but our sons were very tired when they arrived for supper at 8:30 pm last night.

    I’ve scanned the news but trying to read in depth makes my eyes glaze over so time for coffee and to find my smile. Best wishes to all.

    • Read & RT’d. Wish I could rec and comment. So here’s my “comment” – I don’t have your range of musical knowledge but most of those songs I am quite familiar with. Just about every song that wasn’t a “silly love song” was a movement song back then. Even the ones that supposedly weren’t. (That line from “I Dig Rock and Roll Music” – “but if they really say it, the radio won’t play it, unless they lay it between the lines.”) Deja vu all over again… {{{HUGS}}}

      • You should consider asking for reinstatement again. It would be good to have multiple online community to share election news with. My guess is that a sincere apology would be all you would need (even if you are not sure what you are apologizing for). It worked for me when when I was NRed!

        • They made up the excuse to ban me. For whatever reasons – and I suspect a combination of several – they wanted me gone, gone, gone. They not only never told me the reason, they started the rumor mill about it. Last I heard (several months back) the rumors had escalated from “conspiring at another site to attack DK with zombies” to “attempting a denial of service attack”. They also – and weren’t particularly subtle about it – threatened to ban folks who were part of the “bring back bfitz” group. So they’ve made and apparently are still making very sure I don’t come back. And apologizing for something I didn’t do, don’t even know how to do, had to have explained to me what the heck it is, is kind of…

          • And apologizing for something I didn’t do, don’t even know how to do, had to have explained to me what the heck it is, is kind of…

            And this is why I spend as little time as possible at that site, and why I will never give them any money.

            Mind you, I’m grateful to the dk of old: they gave me a voice years ago when I hadn’t one. Blogging there, attracting encouraging comments, and even finding out I had “followers” helped me break free of the writer’s block that plagued me for many years.

            That said, the way they’ve treated you (and others) convinces me not to invest money or emotional energy there.

          • I loved – still love – the old DK. I gave me so many new friends, a community that I didn’t – still don’t – have locally. And after I got involved in groups/communities, it gave me a way to give, to help. I miss that very much.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Monday …

    It is 63 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 86. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Mitt Romney joining Black Lives Matter protestors? Holey maloley! The NY Times said “maybe this time will be different”; it certainly seems different but only time will tell – we have sucked as a nation for a very long time when it comes to race relations. That the hateful Tom Cotton is seen as the new face of Republicanism does not bode well. Trumpism won’t die, it will just get another ugly face and empty soul to promote it.

    I can’t spend much time on the news – I had twin crises yesterday that blew up my day of rest and made today start very early. I am going to put a few of the articles I want to read in Pocket and hope to have a break later in the day. Joe Biden is going to meet with the Floyd family in Houston today at George Floyd’s final funeral service. I hope to watch part of it.

    See all y’all later!

  8. Monday Meese 53 going up to 81 in the NY Catskills.

    Racism on the island

  9. Good Monday morning, Moosekind! Today is a spectacular day, just as last Monday was: blue skies, sunlight, low humidity, and the wind—so far—not too obstreperous. Plan to enjoy it bigly because from Wednesday on it’s going to be horribly hot and humid. Right now the temperature in Ashburn is 66 F., going up to 82 F. If only it would stay like this!

    Managed not to get anything at all done yesterday, aside from preparing meals. We did go for a drive yesterday afternoon, even took the dog with us. It was great simply to get off campus. My nail salon is still open, so that’s reassuring. I’m still not comfortable with the idea of making an appointment there, however.

    We had to fill out menu forms for meal delivery through July 2nd. How depressing! I am so ready for meal delivery to end and carryout to begin. At least we only have to use 20 of their meals per month. The desserts are so horribly rich I have to discard most of them. Tons of butter, brown sugar, chocolate chips, and whatnot are not healthful for anyone, let alone old people.

    Not much to say except that I never did manage to see the Strawberry Moon, despite the fact we had two clear nights in succession. It’s so annoying.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • I decided to wait until my regular hair salon opens even though my backup hairdresser is cutting hair in the next county over. I feel like the safety measures required here in Dane County are better. I have willed my hair to stop growing and so far that is working. :)

  10. Had to cut my walk/run short, felt/feel something wrong in my leg. So today has become abs & stretching. Because we’re on the wrong side of that tropical storm, it is super hot & dry. EMTs at the protests took people in for heat stress. Today: 9 hours of work so I can have a short day Friday.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} – I hope your leg’s better soon. (I’m not sure I’ll be able to do my full 30-40 minutes on the treadmill in this heat, even inside. But I’ll give it a shot as soon as my belated breakfast settles.) Yuk on the weather there. It always is worse than here by at least 10 degrees. Very good idea on the work schedule. Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}

  11. It’s 78 heading for mid 80s and clear at the moment. The rain’s moving in late this afternoon and while tomorrow’s high is supposed to be 90, the rest of the week is in the 80s – and what’s even better, the overnight lows are upper 50s-low 60s. We generated 23.86 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 148.5 – very much on track.

    I realized last night that the pork wasn’t going to keep until Wednesday, so I cooked it this morning. The chicken will wait – it’s not even thawed yet – but I got it out of its wrapper and into the baking pan (covered with aluminum foil) anyway. That way tomorrow’s trash pickup will get all the meat wrappings and they won’t be sitting in my trash can vectoring diseases and nasty odors for the next week. I’ve already put the container out at the curb – the smell is gonna be bad enough by this afternoon and I’d rather not have it on the carport. Wednesday I’ll bake the chicken, Thursday I’ll bake muffins, and Friday I’ll make another small batch of stock (4 8-oz jars – that way I can make single-serving soups for dinners) and bake all the potatoes. That’ll take care of the cool spell and the cooking I need to do for the next 10 days. It’ll just be cooking veggies – when I decide I want to eat cooked veggies. LOL.

    Sad news & a rant I can’t seem to untangle from the sad news. Folks probably know already because it was on my Twitter yesterday and I think you all follow me, but we found out that jan4insight/Jan Burch died last February 27th of gastrointestinal hemorrhage . The day before the APD guy assured me – in a “now leave us alone” tone of voice – that they’d talked to her and she was OK. I knew he was lying but I couldn’t think of anything else I could do. I’d already checked hospitals and apparently my daily requests for wellness checks were irritating NMPD. So she died alone at home and in pain. We found out because MVgal’s on FB although she doesn’t visit it often. She did yesterday and saw a message flag. ABQ Medical Examiner’s office had posted a message on Jan Burch’s page (or whatever) asking for information about relatives. Dated 3/6. Between us, we folks who’d been trying to find her found a cousin once removed (active in the Libertarian Party in OH, for goddess sake) and the name of her first ex-husband for them. Which they could have had before 3/6 if… So I’m sad about Jan but I’m a whole lot pissed off at ABQ. Cops who have no effen problem with breaking into Black folks’ homes (and shooting them) because “oopsies” refused to “force entry” into a white woman’s home for a wellness check – even though her car was in the drive and they’d been getting daily requests for wellness checks because she’d been very sick and suddenly stopped communicating.

    Aji’s given up on the dogs – as in she’s still hoping but she really thinks they’ve been killed (like Blue and Crow were last year) and their spirits are trying to find their way home. They had to be lured off the place – & it’s fenced so the gate would have had to be opened for them as Aji & Wings haven’t found a break in the fence. So somebody was planning something of evil intent. Sometimes I hate people, the effers who think because they can take life it makes them powerful. The effers who hurt/kill animals and children to cause their people pain. I know what I hope. The Energy I send is for their shaping.

    Everybody else is hanging in or hanging on. It’s what they can do. And I will do what I can. Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody, for your shaping. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • Hugs bfitz……you are carrying a heavy load of worry and concern so take care of yourself.

      “Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody….” applies to you too.

      • {{{princesspat}}} – thank you. I’m in a (relatively) safe space so I can worry about others. I’m not scrabbling to make it any longer for myself. That’s a relief on the one hand but carries a duty with it on the other. I most gratefully accept Energy Channeled, by whatever name, to me. Thank you again. Healing Energy and moar {{{HUGS}}}

  12. Good morning, 55 and partly sunny in Bellingham. We were a good crew of family movers yesterday, but my knees are telling me they are done with moving so today will be a rest day. We got the main rooms functioning and the beds made so he and and Heidi can settle in and the rest can happen over time. He needs to focus on getting his work going again and closing out the old house this week. The combo of covid and moving has disrupted his life, but he’ll cope.

    The bonus of helping our son move is that I haven’t had time for following the news of the day. I think I may continue to disengage, ease my tRump angst as best I can, and do what matters at the local level where we might make a difference. Best wishes to all as we make it through another day.

  13. Kamala was on Chris Hayes’ show tonight:

  14. Good morning, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 70 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 84. Sunny this morning and then a line of thunderstorms will move through the area, cooling us off. Thank goodness! Yesterday it was 91 which is too darn hot for the likes of me.

    Gosh, it turns out that you can’t “wish away” a deadly disease and “reopening because the stock market was sad” was stupid and short-sighted. COVID-19 cases are now surging in states that had stayed pretty quiet, probably because they had people who were not ignoramuses and locked themselves down. Now that everyone is free to move around the country, they are going places that had been holding steady and spreading their selfish covids. Grrr. I hope that we flattened the curve long enough to have stockpiled ventilators, planned for overflow ICUs, and more effective treatment plans for the sickest. And body bags, lots of body bags. :(

    tRump is sad because the national polls are showing Biden with a double digit lead and :::checks headlines::: is thinking of replacing his son-in-law? I will resist the nasty comment that notion evoked. Anyway, this time around the “let’s shake things up” and “what have we got to lose?” voters may not be willing to go there again. They know what an Obama-Biden administration looked like from a competency standpoint and now they have a Trump-Pence administration to compare it to. You can’t screw up as many things as tRump has screwed up and hang onto the three states he won by 70,000 votes. Florida and Georgia will steal another election for him but if Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania go blue, we will be talking about President-Elect Joe Biden the morning of November 4th.

    I have some pent-up accounting work that I need to get to as I have some appointments – delayed since January and then locked down – later today. So I better get to it!

    See all y’all later!

    • … is thinking of replacing his son-in-law? I will resist the nasty comment that notion evoked

      Well, I’ll say it. Thing has broken or violated so many societal norms that urging his daughter to divorce Jared so he can marry her himself would surprise no one. He’s just that low of a scumbag.

  15. Tuesday Meese – 59 going up to 91 here in the Catskills!
    Another odd weather blip for June.

    I’m so tired of so-called “woke” folk I could spit
    They are attacking the Congressional Black Caucus for wearing kente cloth – while presenting their bill.

    “““

  16. Hottest day of the year so far. And I need to go in to the office for more applications, darn it. Leg feels ok, but I skipped the walking today. Will do ab stuff on my standing breaks today.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} glad your leg feels better. Also glad you’re being careful. Rats! about having to go to the office – but just for more applications isn’t bad. Healing Energy and moar {{{HUGS}}}

      • I’m gonna go tomorrow. It is just too hot. And we are still working on e-mails & voice mails from the weekend, so it’s not like there’s nothing to do.

        • Good idea. Stay safe – and in the kind of weather you’re having that means stay inside. moar {{{HUGS}}}
