Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 21st through June 27th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 64 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 75. It was raining this morning and there will be a chance of storms all day. After the front passes through, we will be heading into the mid to upper 80s for the foreseeable future.

The #RepublicanDeathCult wants to drag us into their suicide pact with Donald J. Trump and I want nothing to do with it. I am going to go back to ground and let someone else “open the economy.” The kids have been told they are safe and that was a lie – Dane County’s new infections are 50% in the age of 20 to 29; in La Crosse County, that percentage is 90%!! I have no interest in running into people whose social habits will literally kill them.

Can’t stay – Friday of the last full week of June and I need to organize projects for the weekend. I will be setting up things to work through the holiday weekend when people should be home enjoying whatever.

    See all y’all later!

  2. Good morning, 63 and sunny. I want to plant some flowers today so I hope my knees will cooperate. If not I will be in my sewing room, trying to be grateful I have options :)

Regardless I’m going to have a news lite day. tRump is bumbling around, the covid numbers are horrifying, the R’s can’t/won/t govern……Nov can’t come fast enough!

    Best wishes to all.

  3. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 70 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 84. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

Everyone – EVERYONE – said that opening too soon would cause new spikes in coronavirus infections and force the economy to shut down again. But red state governors, whose anti-science party and ignorant, self-absorbed national leader encouraged them to open, decided that they were willing to take the risks. Now Florida and Texas have to pause and back off. When the deaths spike in about 2 weeks, people will shut down for good until there is a vaccination because for the majority of people, self-preservation trumps ideology. This did not have to happen but the stubbornness of those who insist that their Freedumb overrides public health is just as deadly as a virus. It is not just COVID-19, these same people demand to own and carry assault rifles and other automatic weapons – another public health hazard. We are a stupid people.

I have to avoid getting drawn into reading the news this morning and will delay the Fighting Back post until I get two hot projects done.

    See all y’all later!

  4. Saturday Meese.
60 degrees going up to 76 with thunderstorms here in the Hudson Valley of NYS – which my dogs hate.

I saw “Chris Hayes ” trending – almost didn’t look

      • I despise him and blame him and his ilk for the berning purity that helped install Donald Trump in the Oval Office. He can never be forgiven.

  5. Puerto Rico

  6. The dust cloud is still here, my allergies tell me. I moved my walk/run to tomorrow morning because it was raining during the time I would have been out. Not walking in dusty rain. Anyway, today: got to go buy some groceries, but otherwise I’m staying in. For now, I’m watching the news. Ali Velshi has a good show on MSNBC.

    • Sorry about the dust cloud, another! Staying in is the best idea. The Godzilla Dust Cloud is coming to Virginia tomorrow, or so they say. Dearly has COPD, so I may have to take over walking the dog outside.

  7. It’s 74 heading for 90 and overcast. I doubt we’ll get any water out of it but at the moment there’s a lovely cool breeze coming from the north and a bit to the east (judging by the windows it’s coming in through). Yesterday was “partly” cloudy but we got enough sun to at least get 15 KWHs. The m-t-d is 516 so still on track for the month if not for the day. To make goal we need 53 more KWHs and have 4 days to make them in. We shall see what we shall see.

It’s extremely unlikely that twitler would allow DC to become a state even if the R Senate passed it which it won’t. But IF they did, it’s quite likely they’d bring in Puerto Rico as well, just as will-he/nill-he as all their actions regarding Puerto Rico have been – chortling all the while because Dems just will not listen to Puerto Ricans & friends who know the political situation there. Dems keep thinking that Puerto Rico would give us Dem Senators & Rep, all evidence to the contrary ignored/denied. So it would be like the Rs to balance DC Dem Senators and Rep with Puerto Rican R Senators and Rep and be shocked, shocked I tell you, when it works out that way.

    No good news that I’ve heard for anybody. Which of course means the expensive and/or concerning events are getting closer and the hopes of meeting them at all much less comfortably are dying. So. Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody everywhere, to your shaping. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • From what I was reading Hawaii / Alaska statehood was a compromise to give us one new Democratic state and one new Republican state. Interestingly enough, Hawaii was expected to be R and Alaska expected to be D! It certainly did not turn out that way but that was in the 50s when R and D did not mean what they mean now. In the 60s, Northeastern Republicans helped pass the Civil Rights Act and Southern Democrats voted against it.

Speaker Pelosi took issue with a reporter who kept pushing that it wasn’t fair that DC – with its 90% D constituency – would be allowed in with no offsetting Republicans. Her reply:

Butthead Reporter. But D.C. would have a Democratic seat.

Speaker Pelosi. Forgive me for not valuing your question to the extent that you are valuing it. I don’t think about what the state is – that can change over time. But the fact is, people in the District of Columbia pay taxes, fight our wars, risk their lives for our democracy and, yet, in this state, they have no – in this place, they have no vote in the House or the Senate about whether we go to war and how those taxes are exacted and how it is all played.

  8. Good Saturday forenoon, Meese! It’s 77 F. on its way up to 92 F. in Ashburn this morning. The light is dim, even dreamlike, more akin to the light on a September day than a day in June. We may or may not have thunderstorms, as usual. At the moment there are specks of pale blue peeping through a veil of white cloud.

Feeling mildly cheered because the WaPo contained two instances of correct grammar this morning: two different writers used “different from” instead of “different than.” My day is made and it’s not even 9 a.m. yet! (It takes so little to make me happy.)

On a different note, a pipe dream is lazily drifting into the air. Second Son and DIL, eternally young and forever restless, are already looking for a bigger house, this time a house with a grandparent flat. They’ve already looked at a couple on line and one of them was a really nice house, with a circular driveway and a fully equipped kitchen for the grandparents. DIL is Chinese, so to her it’s perfectly normal that the grandparents live in the same house as the younger generation.

I’ve been thinking of moving in with them for some time now. I’ve never felt Gatsby Woods is “home.” It’s been more like an extended stay at a residence hotel. I’ve never got used to elephants living overhead and clomping around in combat boots at 11:30 at night. I miss having a huge backyard for The Dawg, and a big space in which to grow more than zukes and tomatoes. My husband misses barbecuing steak and corn on the cob.

With the lockdown, it is no fun to live here. I realize, of course, that this is hardly the community’s fault: they’ve done their best to keep us safe, even though we’ve had another death here in the medical building. (The total number of deaths from COVID-19 is now 12.) Although I don’t do water aerobics or play cards or engage in “pickleball” (whateverinell that is), it used to be more fun to live here. I did go out with the Raging Grannies, engage in “get-out-the-vote-related activities with other Democrats, join in the “Guess whose biography this is” book club every three months, etc., etc.

Basically, my husband who will be 90 in August, does not want to be bothered interacting on a more than superficial basis with anyone outside his own family. It seems to me the coronavirus is not going away and that it won’t be really safe to live a normal life until there is a vaccine. The schoolteachers are protesting mightily at the idea of teaching in-person classes starting in late August. At any rate, given the absolute torture of not seeing my grandchildren for nearly four months, if we’re going to be locked down, we’d prefer to be locked down with our family.

Of course, the pipe dream may remain a pipe dream. Younger Son is on furlough from his job, so he’d have to show two months’ worth of consecutive paychecks before he and DIL would be eligible to buy another house. His job is airline-related, so we don’t know when he might be called back. He may simply have to get another job, although that would be a pity because he was just about to receive a promotion when All This descended.

Forgive my ramblings, Meese. It’s just that this has been very much on my mind lately.

Looking forward to a day of laundry (ugh), grocery shopping, and perhaps getting a walk in before the “may or may not” rain.

Wishing a good, newsless day to all at the Pond.

    • That Madison Public Schools are floating a hybrid plan where they split the kids into two groups, Cohort A and Cohort B. Cohort A does in-person classes on Monday and Tuesday and Cohort B does their in-person on Thursday and Friday. On the other days, it is online with Wednesday being the day they deep-clean the school building. That is a clever way to do it but I hope they have a computer program to sort out who goes when for busses and neighborhoods and families and the like. It also does not address the elephant in the room: are parents going to have to quit their jobs to be home to educate their kids? What a trumpian disaster!!

  9. Good morning, 57 and mostly cloudy. Our daughter and grandson are coming for lunch today, yay! It will be safer visit on the patio so I hope the clouds won’t turn to rain. And, if I have chocolate chip cookies baking I hope that will distract from my untidy house and empty flower pots. tRump angst seems to have distracted and exhausted me the last few months and my surroundings are reflecting my feelings. I’ll still plant some flowers, but it didn’t happen yesterday and won’t today either.

Best wishes to all on this now rainy day.
