Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 28th through July 4th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 70 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 86. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    We did not have a lot of fireworks last night so I am assuming that tonight will be the night we need to sit with the doggie in the basement where the booms are more muted. I am not sure why people need to do this. I am also not sure that the Fourth of July feels much like a celebration – the Founding Fathers really mucked things up by creating a Constitution that allowed for a defacto king with no way to topple him as long as his political party, holding power only by virtue of the terribly unrepresentative Senate, circled the wagons around him. We should probably have had Founding Mothers – women are smarter about identifying the flaws in a plan.

    I am nearly done with an early morning project I needed to get out the door – once it is done, I can break fast.

    See all y’all later!

  2. My extra Saturday was nice. Loved Hamilton, and even got laundry done without pausing the show since it was on my tablet. Today: news and groceries, and maybe a Marvel movie. I checked the grocery store website & it doesn’t say they’re closed.

  3. It’s 69 and humid. Started raining around 4 am – I got up long enough to close the west windows then went back to sleep. Overcast and occasion rain slated for today which means diddle electricity generation but we did get almost 21 KWHs which at 55 at least temporarily puts the m-t-d on track for July. In my neighborhood the fireworks are a 3-week (or so) deal/ordeal. The first week builds up to tonight for the longest and loudest then tapering off again until everybody’s used up all their fireworks they got on half-off sale today and tomorrow. Freaked all the dogs in the neighborhood with some of them out-howling the noise of the fireworks themselves. My cats mostly hid. A neighbor (asked permission from the street if he could check the trees in my yard) lost his cat. Fingers crossed on the cat coming home and getting safely inside before the next round of fireworks starts this afternoon.

    Natives blocked the road to the Grandfathers (known to white people as Mt. Rushmore) for 4 or more hours last night before the National Guard pepper-sprayed, rubber-bulleted, and otherwise attacked them to clear the way. Arrested a bunch too. Aji’s got a link up for legal fees ( bhlegalfund.org) and took a bit of their totally insufficient for what they need funds to send some to help. This is as good a time – better than most – to see if my credit card company now rules “charitable donations” as cash advances. Legally of course the land is Native and they have the right to block access. But white people quit paying attention to that in less than a decade from signing the treaty. (This isn’t even “Doctrine of Discovery” b.s., it’s “I want it so it’s mine” b.s.)

    Amelia’s “rent” is paid. She did call the doctor’s office & all the Rx that can be renewed over the phone have been. They won’t make an appointment for her to actually see the doctor for the others until she’s had a COVID test and it comes back “clean” – as in no active virus so no contagion. She managed to get to the pharmacy/grocery store for meds & to stock up and was hoping to talk to her dad about the phone before her energy ran out. Don’t know if she managed or how it went – I went offline & she didn’t leave me a DM. Everybody else hanging on – trying to stay stocked up with food, in some cases water, meds, PPE, and dogfood – while waiting of events (including results of various tests for themselves or members of their families).

    I used to celebrate this “holiday” – just as I used to believe the white/WASP supremacist mythology I was taught in lieu of history. The more I discovered the true history of this country, the less I celebrate the holiday. But I do celebrate the good people living in this space and still hold to the thought, which also may be untrue, that there are more good people than bad. That we will indeed overcome the evil ones. And hope that we will manage to at least push them back a bit this year. Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody everywhere, to your shaping. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  4. Good morning, 57 and partly sunny. Yesterday’s rain just didn’t stop so it’s still very wet outside but the sun shining on the garden means I can be outdoors today. I stayed busy indoors yesterday so the area around my desk is cleaned up, one of the ironing baskets is empty, and the recycle plastic and paper areas are no longer a mess. Working in the garden is more fun!

    My best wishes to all on this sunny 4th of July.
