Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: July 19th through July 25th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  1. Puerto Rico

    An excellent read

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 72 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of – HOLEY MOLEY! – 91. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

So fascism wins in America. I am going to hunker down, wait for my absentee ballot to show up for the November election, return it, and hope to hell we have a blue wave that makes it impossible for tRump to claim that the election was stolen from him. I fear blood in the streets as Barr deploys his troops to install his dictator – I will join those protests. Apparently, that is the future Republicans wanted: “win by any means” will give way to “hold power by any means” even after losing.

I am going to immerse myself in work today. Baseball is back but unfortunately my team has not seen live pitching other than their own guys since last fall. Turns out our pitchers suck so they are ill-prepared for the new “season.” I have to say the ballparks with no crowds and fake crowd noise pumped in is very creepy. I like the stadiums where they put up cardboard cutouts of photos from actual fans and put them in the first few rows of seats. Some of them are very funny, like a bare-chested guy “sitting” next to someone in a winter coat and gloves. That happens in real life too!!!

    See all y’all later!

    • About your weather – is that “holy moley” about it being hot? Because that’s our expected high & we’re saying “holy moley” that’s cool.

  3. It’s supposed to finally not be at or near 100 today, because of rain bands from the hurricane. Wish it wasn’t hitting south Texas, they don’t need another disaster. Today: buy groceries, watch movies.

  4. The widget says 75 heading for 90 with a heat index maxing at 95. Which I don’t believe. It’s said that every day for over a week and every day for over a week the temps got to upper 90s and the heat index into the 100s. Of course it’s also saying afternoon clouds and rain which I don’t believe either – and for the same reason. But so far I’ve managed to not have to turn on the A/C again. Although it does get a bit (OK, more than a bit) stuffy in here along about 6:30 until I start opening up the east side of the house around 8 pm. We generated 20 KWHs yesterday and 420 is the m-t-d starting this morning. We’ve 7 production days left in the month. We shall see what we shall see.

We shall see…is true just about everywhere I look. Aji’s got to have another big chunk of revenue – and she really wants sales rather than gifts – to get through July. If it weren’t for everybody being afraid the economy’s gonna tank at any minute she’d already have them and it wouldn’t be an issue. But sales went from a slow but steady flow to a bare trickle last October. At this point people aren’t even going to the website to look – she says the “hits” on the site are down 50%! Amelia needs at least several more days of rest to recover from the bank visit. I hope she manages a fundraiser among her FB friends in there somewhere. (I wish the blasted Section 8 voucher would apply towards the motel – that wouldn’t solve all the problem but it sure would make it easier to cover the rest. But of course it doesn’t because motel…Our supposed safety net for folks with Disabilities is more holes than not.) I haven’t heard from anyone else. Or about my car. sigh.

    It’s another keep on keepin’ on day. So we will. Channeling Healing/Helping Energy to everybody everywhere, to your shaping. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good Saturday morning, Moosekind! At a little after 9:30 a.m., it’s rather sunny after a rill ugly gray start to the day. Right now it’s 78 F. on the way up to 90 F., no rain.

Miss Pink Cheeks is with us for the weekend. This child is a delight! She slept on our new air mattress last night and said it was fine, but rather hard. I’ll have to look for a mattress topper on Amazon. She is reading the second of the Anne of Green Gables series, and has discovered to her pleasure that her best friend is reading the series as well! She forgot her Mandarin textbook, so I don’t know how she’ll fare in her 2 p.m. online class, or whether she’ll attend at all. Tiger Mom will be displeased if she does not.

Yesterday we went to the garden patch to pick tomatoes. The biggies are beginning to turn. We found lots of tiny ones, enough that I could give some to my funny Irish neighbor. We also had a totally disgusting experience. For some time the giant leaves on the zucchini plant have been turning yellow, then shriveling and turning black. The zuke factory looked so dismal yesterday that I decided just to pull it up. That’s when we discovered the HORRIBLE sight of wriggling white maggots with black mouths coming out of the roots. Ugh! I wonder how one can prevent that? I’m hoping to get a garden tub (long ovoid-shaped galvanized steel container), rather than a plot if I’m still here next spring.

I’m very sad, even though before this happened I didn’t know how I’d keep up with the zuke factory. My neighbors were happy to receive the excess, however.

On the agenda today: roll up change (it amounts to only $58), and send a birthday card to Mr. Rising Kindergartener, who is now at the beach with his parents. The money will be distributed among the savings accounts I’m keeping for the three local grandchildren.

Yesterday I received a very nice email from someone in the Virginia Department of Elections, who assured me to my complete satisfaction that (1) I could check the portal of the website to see that my mail-in ballot had been received; (2) that the mailed ballots are kept in two envelopes in a locked room to which only the registrar has access; and (3) because of this, the balloteers would instantly be able to see whether anyone had tampered with the votes. I may go ahead and ask for an “absentee” ballot after all. I wish they wouldn’t call it that. I’m right here! And I’ll miss seeing the other residents at the polls. But…hey, it’s a Plague Year.

Lawks, it’s already nearly 10! Got to get going! Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  6. Good morning, 57 and sunny in Bellingham. I finished sewing Emma’s Disney inspired t shirts (with matching masks) yesterday, and RonK bought two bunches of dahlias at a farm stand so between the dahlias and hydrangeas from our garden she will have a colorful birthday bouquet. Seems impossible she is 18 yrs old now.

Best wishes to all on this sunny July day.
