Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Aug. 23rd through Aug. 29th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will now split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page and use the link.

  2. A hot, sticky morning — 82 degrees already at 6am. I went out for my walk/run anyway, managed 4 segments of 1 minute & 2 at 45 seconds. I watched Hidden Figures last night instead of the convention. Much more uplifting. And I tended my AIDS Walk diary at the orange place — lots of West Wing clips, and music.

  3. It’s 73 heading into the 90s and the heat index will probably hit 100 with this humidity. I’ll need to close up the house in about half an hour. Up in this corner of AR we haven’t gotten more than light sprinkles so far although tomorrow evening around dark it’s supposed to give us an inch, maybe 2 by Sunday night. We’ve got the clouds though. Yesterday generated 9.5 KWHs and the m-t-d is 466 – not gonna make 1st place but still possible to get over 500 which would be nice.

    Nothing new but a whole lot of old Deplorable crap going on. Nothing new with my offline and online family either. Everybody’s still alive. Everybody’s got some degree of health issues. Everybody’s got some degree of financial issues. Some are doing better than others at hanging on but that’s about it.

    There’s a new, sort of, for me – Tractor Supply is already getting the wood bricks in. So I’ll be chancing going out several days in a row starting Monday because that’s what it will take to ferry a pallet of those home. Tractor Supply doesn’t deliver. The cost of delivery on a literal ton of wood bricks would probably mean I couldn’t afford them anyway. At least they’ll load them – hopefully will manage to get 500 lbs in my Camry between back seat and trunk and it will only be 4 trips. How many days it will take me totally depends on how well I hold up unloading them. The number of trips won’t change but the number of days could.

    Meanwhile I’ve got a diary to read and some tweets to boost. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  4. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s 78 F. already in Ashburn on a loathsomely humid morning, on its way up to 91 F. I was thinking of going for a walk, but thought better of it. We’re going over to Elder Son Eric’s house at noon, so if I exercise at all, I’ll use the elliptical in their basement.

    Was too tired from my awful night to watch Kamala’s speech yesterday. I understand it was great! Keeping up with the rest of the news is exhausting. I wonder how many of the unmasked in the murdered Rose Garden last night will come down with COVID. It serves them right for crowding and not wearing masks. I saw the photo.

    Although today is sunny, tomorrow we’re supposed to get the remnants of Laura. The damage in Louisiana looks horrendous. I grieve for the 14-year-old girl who was killed when a tree fell on her house.

    Wishing all at the Pond a nice, quiet day.

  5. Good morning, 59 and sunny in Bellingham. The small dogs have taken over, Maggie has all the pillows and Milo is firmly on my lap. I can just reach the keyboard!

    Last night’s fiasco at The White House was like a bad movie……poorly written script, lousy acting, gaudy visuals, and complete disrespect for the Covid crisis we’re attempting to live through. Glad the small dogs are here to distract me.

    Best wishes to all.

  6. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 68 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 77. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    I am glad the conventions are over and the general election has started in earnest. I take solace in the fact that the free TV that tRump was getting to spread his lies and flaunt his illegal use of the White House for his campaign was a huge – literal! – turn off for viewers. There is no one left for him to “get” with his law and order pitch, his “promises” are the same as his promises in 2016 which he had 4 years to deliver on and failed. His rabid fans won’t care but the people who voted for “shaking things up” might pause. It will be difficult to vote this year and we can hope that marginal trump voters decide to stay home. Our job is to pump up our voters.

    I am watching closely what is happening in Kenosha, embarrassed again to be living in a state whose dysfunctional governments – filled with white supremacists and racist assholes – are on full display. We can’t fix the gerrymanders and the gerrymanders are destroying us. I am glad that Joe and Kamala are talking to the Blake family and urge them to NOT come to our state until the dust settles and to stay away from Kenosha in any event – it is not safe. If you want to visit the Blake family, set up something in Milwaukee where the white militias aren’t in cahoots with local law enforcement.

    I have two things I need to get done today so that I can close out August projects and get ready for September. I will skip putting up a new Fighting Back post and put the Democratic Party Weekly Address – also about the Post Office – in an embedded tweet in last week’s post. I hope to get back to doing the things that I want to do soon – I am already feeling the (mostly good) effects of handing off a project that I needed to have handed off months ago, a decision delayed by the COVID lockdown but also made easier because of the inability to do in-person work at that client’s site any longer. Freedom!

    See all y’all later!

    • Hi, Jan, good for you, getting more control over your situation!

      Hope you can get out of Wisconsin SOON. Not that anywhere in this country is perfect–I live in a state that’s practically synonymous with white supremacy (although it is improving almost daily). Dearly and I often reverently thank Goddess that we live in a place that is not usually subject to earthquakes, forest fires, hurricanes, mud slides, and the like. Moreover, jobs are quite plentiful here, a fact that has kept at least one family member from sliding out of the middle class.

  7. Saturday Meese. 65 and raining here in Kingston NY going up to 80 and rain all day.
    Puerto Rico

    • Of course the MSM would list noob AOC first on this as if Velázquez was a tagalong and hasn’t been really supporting Puerto Rico for years while AOC was out grandstanding for bernie. 😡😡😡

  8. Good morning, Moosekind, on a dark, gloomy Saturday. Currently the temperature in Ashburn is 72 F., aiming for a high of 82 F. Thunderstorms are predicted for today, apparently Laura’s remnants.

    Yesterday we had the MOTHER, or at least the Great-Aunt, of all thunderstorms. Naturally the heavy rain, lightning, and thunder chose to begin just as we were eating dinner. Happy to report that Dearly, who hasn’t touched a barbecue grill in the two-and-a-half years we’ve been living here, has lost none of his skill. The mixed grill and corn on the cob were delicious. We were at Elder Son’s house for a little change of scene. Monty enjoyed the backyard again. After we cleaned up the kitchen, we climbed into the car and drove off, still in a raging thunderstorm, back to The Home for the Aged. After all this time, it still doesn’t feel like”home” to me. It feels like an extended stay in a residence hotel.

    But enough about that. We are supposed to spend the day at Younger Son’s house to keep Mort the Boxer company. We won’t be leaving here for a while, though. I had a horrendous night (3:30 wakeup, 4:00 get-up), so I’m going back to bed after I finish my coffee.

    Glad this past week is OVER. I have found out we can vote nearby on October 17 at a satellite poll. Our ballots will go into a machine to be tallied, just as it would at our regular polling place. Apparently I’ll be look at the Board of Elections portal and see that our votes have been registered.

    Wishing a nice, quiet Saturday to all at the Pond.

  9. Happy Saturday! I’m flipping back & forth between the news & the Tour de France, because omg they’re putting on Le Tour! And before the men had their start, they had the 1-day women’s race, La Course. In 2022, they plan to bring back a full-on Women’s Tour, which they had back on the ‘80s. Anyway, that’s my day.

  10. It’s already 77 heading for mid 90s and heat index on one side or the other of 100. It’s also already overcast so I don’t know how much electricity we’re gonna generate today. But we got 18.2 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 484.9 so as long as we get some each day for the next three we’re probably gonna reach 500 for the month. (It’s still technically possible to reach 534 – but that would take 18/day and that ain’t gonna happen.) Today’s the last hot summer day. With this evening’s rain cooler weather is moving in. Mostly 80s, a couple of 70s even, and overnights drifting down from upper 60s to upper 50s. That’ll be nice.

    I’ve got to be out enough next week I wish I could wear masks. What I’m wearing is a dang-sight better than nothing but not nearly as protective of me as a good mask would be. But I’ll do what I can to stay safe. I’ve got to get those wood bricks while they’re still available. Meanwhile the Evil Ones are being evil, our team is doing what we can to stop them now while working on getting them out of power, & my family/friends online and off are hanging on. As am I. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  11. Good morning, 60 and partly sunny in Bellingham. The small dogs are asleep beside me, the house is quiet, and I’m just waking up. Looks like another a quiet day ahead. I have lots to do but can’t seem to focus on anything. I did water the garden and do a little bit of pruning yesterday so perhaps I’ll do some more today. I’ve let salmon berry plants grow tall and arch over a pathway, but now the plants in that area aren’t getting enough sunlight so I need to thin the overhead canopy. Last summer the plant mix was perfectly happy, but this summer it’s not. Gardens do change, and gardeners need to stay flexible!

    Best wishes to all.

  12. lots of tributes to Chadwick Boseman, this may be my favorite — Noah says he was a king because he served us
