Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Sept. 13th through Sept. 19th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

  1. Good morning, 56,foggy and the unhealthy air warning is still in effect. I have plans to meet my grand girls and their mom for lunch today so we’ll have to decided if it’s safer to be outside despite the air quality or risk being inside with covid……strange times we’re living in.

The electrician was here early yesterday to finish wiring the new plug in the kitchen so now we plug in an auxiliary heater this winter. Working around the existing radiator and the pipe system in the basement made a simple project more difficult but this was still easier than trying to replace the old radiator. Our son will figure out a way to patch the access hole in the basement ceiling.

Best wishes to all on this foggy September morning.

  2. There is one more match for the AIDS Walk:
    $25K Match for Walk Week!
This Saturday starting at 11am we will kick off the Walk Program with $25k in matching dollars!

I have to think of something to write. I’m really tired; long, long week at work. But should put something up tomorrow.

  3. Blessed relief for Ruth Bader Ginsburg who has been so sick for so long. But a sad sad day for America. Go away, 2020, you suck.

Her mother was not allowed to go to college – that was for the menfolk. At her swearing in ceremony, she remembered her mother who had died while Ruth was in high school:

“I pray that I may be all that she would have been had she lived in an age when women could aspire and achieve and daughters are cherished as much as sons.”

I am going to take a couple of days off to work quietly on some intentions.

  4. RIP RBG

    • Thanks, Dee. The Barack Obama statement helped. I can’t deal with the glee from the right-wing today and will stay off Twitter and avoid places where my well-meaning friends will probably make me more sad and angry.

I woke up hoping that there would be honorable Senators in the Republican Party who would reject Mitch McConnell’s blatant hypocrisy and refuse to hold hearings on a tRump nominee. I don’t think it is likely – they have shown no capacity for shame. So instead I will vote (my absentee ballot arrived yesterday) and work to elect Joe Biden and a Senate majority that can fix the mess by killing the filibuster and diluting the power of the Russian seats on the Supreme Court of the United States.

  5. Saturday Meese – it is only 39 degrees here in Kingston NY. Yikes. Going up to 61.

  6. So sad. And angry — McConnell being a flagrant hypocrite, because of course he is. And today is the last match for the Walk. I wrote a diary, then re-wrote it after the news hit. It’ll go up at 11, when the match begins. Loved seeing the people gathering at the Court, saying kaddish and singing Amazing Grace.

  7. Well, yesterday was devastating because we lost a giant among Americans. May she rest in peace. She will inspire people, especially women and girls, for a long time.

And we’ll continue fighting! This isn’t over by a long shot ( had clichés for breakfast this morning.) Murkowski, Romney, and possibly Collins and Graham may refuse to vote on a nomination for SC justice. So we shall see what we shall see, as our bfitz says.

Was feeling encouraged yesterday before The News broke last night. Thousands of Virginians stood in long lines to vote on the first day of early voting! Long may it continue. With all those early votes banked and dropping right into the election night results, we might see a very different picture from the gloomy forecasts by the “pandits” and trolls. It’s interesting that the more obstacles Cheeto Face and DeJoyBoy institute to suppress the vote, the more people are finding ways around that. Some of the Virginians and Minnesotans interviewed yesterday said they didn’t trust the mail and wanted to avoid long lines on election night. Virginia dropped the “excuse required” for absentee voting and started installing lock boxes (previously illegal in the commonwealth) that are emptied every night and trucked to the Board of Elections office.

It’s a beautiful morning in Ashburn, the first we’ve had in a long while. Brilliant blue sky, golden sunlight, and quite a stiff breeze. When I took Monty out to the courtyard at 6 a.m., the temperature was 46 F. Right now it’s 47 F., going up to 65 F.

If it weren’t for the tragic news, I’d say “Arr, me hearties! ‘Tis talk like a pirate day,” but given the state of people’s hearts and minds, I’ll just skip it. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and ALL DEMOCRATS!

    • Ha! “I had clichés for breakfast this morning.”

Sometimes it helps to hear them. My daughter was heartbroken last night, making plans to move to Canada. I did not have any good words for her although later I told her that in 2000, when Bush’s brother stole an election for him and his party’s Supreme Court stopped the counting, that I was sure that we would never recover. But we did – we elected Barack Obama and restored decency and honor. One of these times there will be a permanent majority that wants decency and honor and we won’t be on this crazy roller coaster.

  8. It’s 56 heading to 78 and sunny so far. Yesterday we generated 13.7 KWHs and the m-t-d is 218.7 – slogging along. Like the country. Blessings on RBG for hanging on as long as she could. Pancreatic cancer is effen painful yet she did. I go back and forth between nausea and anger. The nausea is the same as 11/5/16. The anger is the same, too. At the same people. For the same reason. And I can’t think of anything except as Jan said, work on some intentions. Or I guess it’s more work on some intentions. The Great Wheel keeps turning. {{{HUGS}}}

  9. sad but also comforting

  10. Good morning, 64, partly sunny, and much better air quality in Bellingham this morning. It’s a relief to see more normal light in the house and in the sky.

After a long night I have a feeling of quiet resolve this morning and I want read and reflect about Justice Ginsberg’s life today. The drama of replacing her SCOTUS seat will happen as it does, when it does. I will pay attention and do whatever I can, but today I just need to stay quiet. Best wishes to all.

    • The Linda Greenhouse piece in the New York Times was very good. Today I will focus on the joy of her accomplishments. You are right – whatever happens with her replacement, happens. Agonizing over it won’t help, reading angry diatribes won’t help. We will vote for Democrats and hope that those who are in power next year can minimize the damage. Part of the problem is the lionization of the Supreme Court by the left – we need to lionize statutes, not court rulings – and build court-proof laws. When blue states realized last year that they still had anti-abortion laws on the books, it was embarrassing. What an Anthony Kennedy ruling giveth a Brett Kavanaugh ruling can taketh away. Win majorities, pass laws, and flip off the tRump courts.
