Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Oct. 4th through Oct. 10th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

  1. It’s 52 going to 80 and sunny. No evening fires for the rest of the week & looks like well into next week. The temps won’t be low enough by sundown. Anyway we generated 12.5 KWHs yesterday and the very-on-track m-t-d is 65. Nice to be banking electricity. The lights are on in the morning now and earlier in the evening but mostly the bathroom heater is electric. I only have it on when I’m showering/dressing after the shower but that’s still a heavy draw.

    Evil ones being evil. I’m not a mental health professional so I’m not gonna try to say what the technical/medical diagnosis is but twitler is what we used to refer to as a megalomaniac. & yes, Hitler was too. And Hitler’s mental abilities peaked about 1939 or maybe ’40 and it was all downhill from there although he was still dangerous until the day he died. Twitler’s mental abilities peaked some time before he was put in the WH. But he’s been a very useful rabid squirrel – yes, to a certain extent dangerous on his own but only locally – to distract the nation from the greater evils perpetrated by the Genocidal Old Party for the benefit of the Birchers and their ilk. & I wish people weren’t so focused on him as the root of the evil. No, taking him out isn’t going to stop it. Only taking the GOP down – for multiple election cycles – will do that. (Or if not stop it, then chase it back under its rock for a generation or two.)

    Holding the Good Thought for everybody in my circle/online & offline family – may we all get far enough back from the edge to be able to relax. Not our vigilance, never our vigilance. But relax from the need to hang on or we’ll go over the edge. Get to firm footing and a firm foundation. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  2. Good morning, 53 and partly sunny in Bellingham. I didn’t do very much yesterday, but I think I’m starting to recover from a bad case of tRump/covid blues. It’s interesting, but no fun when new events trigger old emotions. The non stop news re tRump and covid has stirred fear, sorrow and anger re our son’s covid experience. Intellectually I know he is well now, but emotionally I still feel like he is in danger of dying. And I’m angry all over again because he had so little medical care. We talked about this yesterday and he is bothered with flashbacks too, but determined to keep living the healthier life he has now.We’re meeting at the bookstore cafe for lunch today, one last time before outdoor dining is over. Doing something “normal” is good for both of us.

    Best wishes to all, and as always I appreciate meeting at the moose pond.

  3. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! Where is everyone today? I’d like to moan about my physical state but you’ve heard it all before.

    Because of a horrible night on Monday, I did not get anything done on Tuesday. Today, while the weather is still nice, we’re going to put that dreadful little dog in day care while we drive into the country to look at the changing leaves. Yesterday we went on a long-planned visit to Costco, leaving him Home Alone with a kong. When we came back we discovered he’d ripped up everything within reach, such as cardboard food containers that were awaiting disposal and a cardboard box holding neatly rolled up dog waste bags.

    Right now it’s 50 F. in Ashburn, on its way up to 81 F. Tomorrow a cold front will arrive and by Saturday the weather will deteriorate—or so they allege.

    Going to watch the VP debate tonight but am worried sick about Kamala and Doug and their exposure to Stupid Q-Tip and his viral load. I wish there would be NO more debates.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • I was putting up a post with Joe Biden’s excellent speech from Gettysburg (which includes Michelle Obama’s “Closing Argument” in the comments) so that delayed me.

      I hope that tonight is the last debate of the election season. There is no reason for tRump and Joe to debate again – everyone saw what they needed to see last week. The campaign will not be able to rein in tRump’s worst instincts and anyone in his presence is at risk to get a deadly disease. America is ready to vote, let’s do it.

  4. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 57 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 70. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The sun will make it hotter so I will have to carefully manage opening and closing windows to avoid it being uncomfortable indoors.

    I thought it interesting that the pundits suggested that tRump’s petulant withdrawal from pandemic relief talks was “holding America hostage – vote for me or you will all die!” I think that his party knows that he is toast and their Senate majority is history and they want to leave the economy in the worst possible shape for when Joe Biden and the Democrats take over next year. They saw how the Republican-created Crash of 2008 hampered President Obama’s agenda and what better way to sabotage Democrats than to leave them with a moribund economy and a nationwide health crisis! If Republicans cared about their constituents, they would pass one of Nancy Pelosi’s HEROES bills and override their president*’s veto. Instead, they will not only sink with him but harm the people they swore to serve and protect on their way down. Bastids!!

    I saw on my news feed that the Pence camp agreed to protections for Kamala tonight. I think Pence has the virus but is not telling anyone – how could he escape it, he was sitting with all the virus spreaders at Mrs. Jesse Barrett’s Red Ball? Anyway, the most important thing is to keep Kamala Harris safe from the unclean ones, people who think masks are political statements instead of science. Bastids!

    I have a day to organize myself then I have a challenging schedule to meet a deadline next week. I want to get a few things organized and then clear the decks to read about the debate tonight. I will find it on a non-talkinghead TV channel (CSPAN or PBS) and tape it since it is on past my bedtime.

    See all y’all later!!

  5. Good morning. Had a terrible night’s sleep, going into the office this morning to try calling a few people I haven’t been able to reach from the office phone. Got to wear my “formal wear” of capris & a U2 t-shirt. I may watch the debate tonight, I don’t have the same visceral response to Pence that I do to the Cheeto in Chief; I can just hit mute when he speaks. Also, there’s apparently something coming from Keith Olbermann this evening, that should be fun.

  6. Good morning Meese – got very little sleep last night, and now want a nap. 54 going up to 77 here in Kingston
    Puerto Rico

  7. I guess I join the “didn’t sleep well” club – stars doing something interesting or something I guess. Anyway it’s 56 heading for 85 and sunny. We generated 12.3 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 77.7 – if this keeps up we’ll reach 100 by tomorrow afternoon. That will be nice. Ginger muffin bread just came out of the oven and are cooling. Be ready to cut in about 15 minutes or so. They’ll last for breakfast and mid-morning coffee until next week. I’ll need to go do stocking up shopping on the 15th.

    Holding the Good Thought for Kamala’s safety – also that of the audience if there is a live audience. We’ve got to not only win the election Blue Wave, we’ve got to survive until our folks get into office and start dealing with the myriad of evils the Rs are deliberately piling up for them. Somewhere in there I hope somebody pays attention to dealing with the RW propaganda machine that is the MSM. Because if we don’t, we’ll have 2 years and then they’ll be back. sigh.

    Folks hanging on. Kind of a good anniversary last night/today/this week – 10/6/17 was the first night Aji & Wings slept in the house. Only sleeping, the bathrooms & kitchen weren’t operational so they had to do most stuff in the toxic tin can, but they were sleeping in the house. And it’s so well built, held the heat of the day as it’s designed to do, that they turned off the electric heaters and even the electric blankets they’d needed in the RV. And the wood stoves were in and working by the 9th. In bad times there are still good things. Holding the Good Thought for more such good things – for everyone. Mean while – coffee. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning, 56, foggy and cloudy in Bellingham. I was awake in the night too, so looks like we’ll all need a nap today. When the tRump nightmare is over I hope we can all rest easier.

    I have an anniversary bouquet started for our son and dil so I’ll finish that today. It’s been a busy 20 yrs for them and their family. And my desk needs attention too so I hope the inner fog lifts soon so I can focus.

    Best wishes to all as we make it through another day.

  9. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 39 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 66. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    I have a few articles up to read about the debate – I did not watch it as it was on past my bedtime and I knew that I would have found it infuriating. I caught an early tweet with a quote from Mayo Pete, who was the Pence stand-in for the debate prep, that Pence has the ability to lie – enormous lies, obvious lies – without changing his facial expression. I am certain that my TV would not have survived what I threw at it!! The headlines were mostly complimentary (except from the right-wing rags who were calling out Kamala for some Lincoln statement – from the Party That Embarrasses Lincoln Every Day in Every Way) and that she “won”, whatever that means. Now, let’s end any speculation about an in-person debate between Joe Biden and COVID Donald, it is simply too risky. Over 36 people so far were infected from the #RoseGardenMassacre, Mrs. Jesse Barrett’s Red Ball. It makes no sense to expose anyone we care about to their negligence.

    Bill Barr is determined to ratfk the election to keep his boss in power. We need a blue wave to sweep him away. GOTV, GOTV, GOTV. Do not count on Wisconsin, by the way. The latest results from the Marquette Poll show that the #RepublicanDeathCult is too strong here and tRump will likely win again. Put your time and effort into picking up those 10 electoral votes in Arizona instead.

    See all y’all later!

    • Here’s the poll. Even the men watching think that Kamala won.

      • There is lot of racism here. Electing the first Black president made many of them insane with hatred and gave Republicans the opportunity to take over. They destroyed so much of the good that people left. I am not sure how much we can do. If the Republican legislature gets a supermajority and Evers can’t veto their hateful legislation, I will have to move.

        • We can start a contest. “Where will Jan move?” and offer reasons for our choice, leaving you to agree or disagree.

          I’m assuming red states will be automatically disqualified.

  11. In from my walk/run, making slow progress. I watched the debate, sort of. Hit mute every time Pence talked. Of course, he interrupted Sen. Harris, though less than Trump did Biden. Anyway, today’s plan: just work. I noticed my dvr recording something last night — an animated Dr. Who special, so I’ll watch that.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} – oh the joys of dyslexia – when I first read it, I thought your dvr recorded an animated special about Whoville (Dr. Suess). 🤣🤣🤣

      Progress is good. (I’m managing 3 15-minute walks on my treadmill most days now.) Healing Energy & moar {{{HUGS}}}

  12. Good Thursday morning, Moosekind! It’s another blue and gold October day, although extremely windy. Ugh. I’m not sure whether I’ll feel up for a walk. Currently it’s 55 F, going up to 69 F., winds out of the northwest at 10-15 mph.

    Last night I was yelling and swearing at Pence and Page until the air turned blue around the telly. Kamala did beautifully although I did notice she sometimes chose to put forth talking points instead of answering the question. On the whole, though, I think she “won,” whatever that means. Q-Tip lost. He was living, breathing proof that right-wing males despise women and wish to see them subordinated. The Fly was spectacular! Central Casting is to be commended. Flies like landing on ordure, and that’s exactly what Pencey-Poo is.

    We had an agreeable drive through the mountains to the Shenandoah Valley yesterday after dropping the dawg off at day care. (He resented it so much that when we picked him up three hours later he howled and swore horribly.) Anyway, we did not see the beautiful red and gold foliage we were expecting. The rolling hills were green, with an occasional horse grazing on them, and the mountains were blue until we got up close, when they turned a hazy green. Virginia is a beautiful state, at least the northern part is. On clear days in Ashburn we can see the Blue Ridge mountains in the distance and the sight always rejoices my heart, battered organ that it is.

    We did see a very agreeable sight, considering we were driving through Rich People Country, meaning wineries and farms. There were 10 Biden-Harris signs along the way and only one small Thing sign, hardly noticeable among the many signs for Warren and Shenandoah county candidates.

    Have a quiet day of cleaning up planned, as I’m expecting to host six-year-old Karl tomorrow night and five-year-old Ethan for a few hours on Saturday.

    Feeling hopeful as the election nears. The sight of people lining up all the way around buildings for hours is encouraging. They’re avoiding not only the COVID-inducing Election Day crowds, but also DeJoyBoy’s slowed-down Post Office.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond and to Kamala and Joe beyond.

  13. It’s 60 heading for 84 and clouds are moving in. Yesterday we got 11.8 KWHs (m-t-d is 89.5) but I doubt we’ll hit double-digits today. sigh. But we’re still on track so that’s good.

    I didn’t watch the “debate” or even hang out with the live bloggers last night. I knew she’d handle it well. I also knew the moderator wouldn’t moderate and she’d be on her own for dealing with a “gud Xtian” congenital liar who ignores time limits and tries to talk over his opponent. But she’s dealt with not-so-impartial judges as well as nasty, lying, counsel before. As to the supposed meat & point of having it at all, policy, I know what our team’s policy is. I’d love to hear her talk about it – but not in those circumstances.

    Holding the Good Thought for everybody everywhere but admittedly especially for those in my family/friend circle. Just wish I could to something more concrete to help. It takes a lot of metaphysical Energy to impact anything on the physical plane. But it’s what I can do so I do it. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  14. Good morning, 58 and mostly cloudy in Bellingham. I had a nasty vertigo episode yesterday, but my world feels stable this morning so I’ll try again to finish the bouquet and tend to my messy desk. I forgot to eat lunch yesterday, and forgot to take my morning meds as well so one more time, lesson learned. Eat regular meals and don’t take meds on an empty stomach!

    Thanks to my misadventure I see much of the debate last night and I’m going to be sparing with my news intake today. Best wishes to all as we count down the days to the election.

  15. Friday Meese. 42 here in Kingston NY going up to 67.
    Am trying to cope with the death of Monica Roberts aka TransGriot. Still don’t know what happened. We met at Netroots Nation in Providence. She’s become a good friend over the years.

  17. Good morning meeses! Friday …

    It is 52 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 79 – summer came back! We will be back to more normal temperatures tomorrow, this is a one day blip.

    No one should be shocked that a domestic terrorism group has plotted a civil war and taken steps to kidnap and harm a Democratic governor. I was shocked that the Republican leadership in the Michigan legislature actually called it out. I am pretty sure that in Wisconsin – where Democrats winning statewide offices is decried as ‘tyranny’ – they would probably be tweeting out GoFundMe links to help their legal defense. Domestic terrorists recruited the murderer from Illinois who killed lawful protesters in Kenosha and his mother was feted at a Republican Party banquet in Waukesha a few weeks ago.

    tRump is ‘roid raging and it is dangerous because his party has no interest in reining him in. Nancy Pelosi will be introducing legislation to put in place a 25th Amendment Commission to assess a president and the line of succession and make recommendations about transferring power to people who are not demented. I am sure that will trigger Herr Twitler! You go, Nancy!!

    I put up a few news articles in tabs when I got on my computer this morning but I have doubts I will be able to get to them. I have a number of projects queued up for the weekend and I have to send off emails to make sure I have everything I will need. Back to work …

    See all y’all later!

  18. Happy Friday! We’re back to summer weather for the weekend — it might even hit 100 on Sunday. Something about because where the hurricane is hitting makes sinking air & west winds… Anyway, today I’m going into the office to drop off the 11 completed applications I have and pick up some new ones for next week. It’s weird to drive so much. I only have to work till 3:30, will be listening to U2 Radio in between calls out — the best thing about working from home.

  19. Low 60s heading for low 80s and overcast but clearing off. It cleared off yesterday in time to generate 11.9 KWHs and the m-t-d is a very-much-on-track 101. Other than that though, the weather is what you might call the worst of both worlds – warm enough for bugs and chilly enough to mess with my hands. And gunk in the air for headaches. sigh. Oh well, minor issues compared to the health problems of folks in my online family.

    Nancy Pelosi only brings stuff to the table when she’s got the votes so looks like she’s finally got the “Amendment 25” votes. If actually doing it requires the Senate, it’s not going anywhere, but most of what she gets done doesn’t go anywhere because of the R Senate. That’s always been true – even when it was R filibusters rather than R leadership that did the blocking. We shall see what we shall see. We shall also see if/how long the various folks in my online family managed to hang on. And if it will be long enough.

    The sun is trying to come out. I’ll see if I can find some optimism to go with it. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}
