Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 11th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

  1. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 37 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 52. Sunny this morning then showers possible this afternoon.

    I don’t have much to say today – I watched the Joe Biden town hall on ABC (except for the first 10 minutes because I thought it was not on until 8!) and was impressed. It will be such a relief to have an intelligent thoughtful person in the White House. We will probably not agree on everything (I want there to be NO COMITY) but it is clear that his heart is in the right place. I listened to about 3 minutes of ABC’s post town hall commentary, was disgusted by the attacks on Biden because he won’t talk about SCOTUS while the confirmation process is ongoing and then turned it off when they started talking about what tRump said in his “town hall”/Gift From NBC. If I wanted to hear what tRump said, I would have watched that!! I despise our media.

    I will catch up on the news and yesterday’s comments later – I have some things I need to do before clients start their workday.

    See all y’all later!

  2. Good morning, all. Allergies are killing me, I slept in and I’m so glad I have a short workday today. It’s a nice cool morning, but I’m not opening the windows. Anyway, today’s plan: work till 3:30, and that’s probably all I can deal with.

    • {{{anotherdemocrat}}} I hear you on the allergies. Hope they are better soon. Healing Energy and moar {{{HUGS}}}

    • Are the cypress trees in bloom or something, anotherdemocrat? My daughter suffers terribly from that pollen and has to actually take to her bed.

      Hope you’ll be able to find some relief today.

      • juniper, ragweed, fall elm – that last one can be in the “low” category & it still kills me

        I’m fighting to stay awake, because falling asleep now would have me awake at some stupid time like 3am.

  3. Friday Meese
    Sleepy from staying up late watching Joe in town hall – and the responses.

    Am really loving Sarah Cooper

    • Senator John “not that one!” Kennedy is the stupidest man in a Senate where stupidity is rampant. I also want John “I am not afraid of Corona beer” Cornyn – who is crowing about Mrs. Jesse Barrett being the best thing to happen to America – to lose his seat. I despise them all but there are a handful who I would love to see lose.

      • I never thought I’d see anyone take the Stupid crown away from Ron Johnson, but Kennedy does manage to wear it proudly and for all the world to see.

  4. Puerto Rico
    Great idea from Biden campaign – place a digital ad in Puerto Rico, even though islanders can’t vote for POTUS, because of the close ties between families in the island and the mainland

  5. It’s 36 heading for 67 and sunny. Yesterday we got 8 KWHs, the lowest daily for the month so far, and the m-t-d is a still on track 177. So that part’s good.

    We’re getting a little in Fall color, the maples never disappoint, but not much. It’s been too dry this year. Since this is the first time my sister has ever been in AR I wish it were “showing better” but it is what it is. AR’s still a beautiful state. She & her husband will be here to pick me up about 1 – we’re going to go walk around campus and look at the historic (for AR) buildings before we go to their campsite and do the “birthday” steak dinner.

    Twitter was “overwhelmed” last night so a bunch of stuff I normally boost before I log off didn’t happen. I’m gonna go over there and see if it happened after I logged off and if so boost it now. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  6. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s cloudy here, a gray-and-white day. We may or may not get precip. some time or other. Currently in Ashburn it’s 56 F., working its way up to 57 F. It must be colder during the nights than I thought, because the more delicate of the porch plants are dying. The mint is clinging desperately to life (it was 77 F. yesterday), as is Frondsy the Boston Fern, but the pretty plant, the rosemary, and the lavender are all dead as…doornails. (How original.)

    Have letters to get off this morning, as well as a walk to do. In common with many people who no longer go out to work every day, I keep forgetting which day it is. For example, I thought yesterday was Friday. Yesterday we had a Zoom meeting at 3 of the Communications Committee. It took us 15 minutes just to get in, since everyone had been given the wrong information. There were only five of us, therefore. I emerged from the meeting with yet another assignment, so now I have three articles to write before the November deadline.

    I did watch the town hall—or rather, I kept an eye on it—but in the end fatigue prevailed and we tottered off to bed.

    Tomorrow we vote in person. I think Dearly is going to refuse to wear his visor, but I don’t care how stupid I look, it’ll be better than getting COVID.

    Wishing all at the Pond a peaceful day.

  7. Good morning, Meesefolk; 28 when I got up and a clear, bright high of 54 today. It’s going to be a few more hours before it hits the 50s, so I’m just going to putter around the house today and use tomorrow, which is expected to be high 50s/low 60s for the final yardwork. (“Final!” As if yardwork is ever done!)

    I didn’t watch either town hall last night, although I did turn on the TV in the living room to ABC while I was working in the kitchen. I don’t know exactly how ratings are tracked, but I figured if there was any chance tuning in would take away bragging rights for the Resident Blowhard, I would play that game.

    I’ve been averaging 3 job applications a day so far, which isn’t great, but I now have a far clearer idea of what types of jobs appeal to me and that I would be good at than I did a year ago. So I’m being a bit more picky and no longer looking so much for a culmination of my career as a way to wind down my working days. I still want to work for at least another four years, but Kiddo is also making very loud noises about us downsizing and moving to OH to be closer to her and SIL. It’s tempting, but her timetable is all about “Now!” and mine is more “One of these days…”

    Time to do today’s job search; good day to and for all!

    • {{{DoReMI}}} – ya know, there are jobs in OH, too. You might could do both. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning meese. It’s 60 with a high of 95 in Folsom, CA. Not much to report, except that evacuations are taking place in Oroville which is about 2 hours north. I hope the fires don’t get out of control again.

    • {{{basket}}} – Holding you in protective Light. & Healing Energy both to you and to the area. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  9. Good morning, 53, cloudy and windy in Bellingham. I watched a bit of Biden’s tv time last night and I’m so ready for a Mr. Rodgers president! Hard to understand why tRump people think that’s an insult.

    The best part of my evening was a telephone visit with my grandson. I’ve really missed being with him so it was nice to talk about his classes, the books he’s reading, the music he’s playing and how he’s feeling. I know relationships change as grandkids get older but it’s hard not to be together as often as we were when he was younger.

    Best wishes to all as we count down to the election. Getting closer!

    • I love that ad! I don’t trust the Lincoln Project as far as I can throw them but that is brilliantly done. We just need to remember that they are not our friends and will trash us and our agenda at the drop of a hat. A tweet from yesterday put it in perspective:

      Do you guys follow The Frankenstein Project? It’s a group of doctors who produce videos making fun of the monster they created.

  10. Puerto Rico

  11. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 37 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 57. Precipitation expected – right now it says mixed precipitation but I am afraid to look out my window at it! It is too early for snow and ice.

    I am going to carefully manage my news intake over the next :::looks at Days to Election widget::: 17 days. I don’t want to believe the polls – one good thing from 2016 is people aren’t going to buy “we are 99% sure that the Democratic nominee will win”. I know, I know, the problem was the undecideds all breaking for tRump, the problem was the 3rd party ratfkers, the problem was voter suppression. BUT there were a lot of no shows and we will never know how many didn’t show up because they thought their votes were not needed. I hope everyone is making it clear to everyone they know that we are going to need to swamp the vote, make it such a wide margin that cries of “rigged election” will be laughable and even Justice Mrs. Jesse Barrett can’t hand the election to tRump.

    Busy day here as I can finally work without client interruptions and get some projects done.

    See all y’all later!

  12. Good morning, Meesefolk; 30 now and going up to a clear 55 today. That’s colder than I had hoped, but the yard is drier, so yardwork will commence. I’ve been putting off planting my multi-stem amelanchier, and I can’t delay any more if I want it to settle in before the ground freezes.

    I applied for a job yesterday that required one of those personality assessments, and on a scale of completed to expert, I registered as completed. Apparently it was intended to measure drive and ambition, and unsurprisingly after my recent experience, I don’t have a lot of either by the usual measurements. I’ve pretty much entered the “I shall wear purple” phase of my life (AKA no fcks left to give), and if a company is looking for someone with a cutthroat approach, I’m definitely not it. I’ve reached the conclusion that skills assessments have some value, but anything that requires a personality assessment is not for me. Honestly, companies could cut down on resume reviews, and I would not waste time applying, if they would just let applicants know in advance that they use personality tests as part of their assessment process. Having reached that conclusion, for now I will not complete personality assessments and take myself out of the running that way. I can always reevaluate my approach if I get no nibbles. And all of that just proves that I have “no ambition”! :D

    I tried to watch the Pete Souza documentary on MSNBC last night, but I fell asleep both times it was on (which is not a commentary on the documentary but on my Hillary-esque ability to snooze the minute I start relaxing). I’m hoping it will be available through On Demand, because I really would like to relive some of the kinder, funnier, more loving, more honest, more compassionate moments of our history, and I can think of no better way than to immerse oneself in time with the Obamas.

    I have two jobs to apply for and then it’s time to bundle up for outside. Good day to and for all!

  13. Hello, everyone. In from my walk/run. I needed long sleeves, it’s a chilly 60 degrees this morning. It’ll be 74 tomorrow, so I had to be sure to walk today. Researching which are the longest-lasting bulbs, because my bedroom light went out & it is super hard to reach. You’d think you could just search for “10 year bulb 100 watt”, and you would be wrong. sigh.

    • A 1600 lumen LED “bulb” (if you can afford it) will last for the foreseeable future. & use about 15 watts doing so. Good luck. {{{HUGS}}}

      • It says on the box it should last 9 years. I managed to get up & down from the 3rd step on the ladder, though that was hard — there isn’t anything to hold onto beside the ladder itself. But I got it done & don’t have to do it again till 2029.

  14. It’s 55 heading for 71 and sunny. A bit chilly in the house but it’ll warm up. We generated 11.6 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d is 188.6 so we might, probably not but might, reach 200 today.

    I had a lovely visit with my sister and BIL yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised and tentatively happy about repairing a breach there. The last time I saw my sister was over 10 years ago. At the time she was an “nice” R & a purveyor of nasty stories about Momma from the family trouble-maker. So you can see why I was a bit ambivalent about the visit, right? But the Tea Party changed their party affiliation. The “I didn’t leave my party, my party left me” kind of change. They aren’t strong Dems – there’s way to much “both sides” there – but they voted for Hillary and have voted early for Joe & Kamala. And when I said something about Momma being bipolar, instead of a “your making excuses” I got “I didn’t know Momma was bipolar.” So whether you call it a change in attitude or maturing between 50 and 60, it’s a good thing. (The steak dinner they prepared for me was nice, too. I’ve got half the steak in the fridge for another meal. LOL)

    I need to prepare/grill my breakfast sausages today. That’s a messy deal I don’t particularly like doing but once it’s done I don’t have to do anything but thaw my morning pattie for 6 weeks. And at least I can consistently eat these. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  15. Good morning, 52 and cloudy in Bellingham. Our ballots arrived in the mail so were are cooking dinner for the family on Sunday and we will vote together. Then RonK will deliver the ballots to the drop off site at the courthouse. The process is very straight forward in our state and it annoys me deeply to watch see how complicated voting is in other states.
    Yesterday became a long nap day so I’ll see what today brings my way. Fortunately I’ve got lots of choices. Best wishes to all.
