Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: October 18th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

COUNTING DOWN …

  1. It’s 70 heading for mid 80s today and sunny at least at the moment. Somewhere around midnight a front’s ushering winter back in – our highs for the foreseeable future aren’t up to what this morning’s “low” was – including some more rain. Which I’m grateful for. I just wish folks who need it more that we do could have it. Anyway, we didn’t quite make it to 10 KWHs yesterday (some cloudy spates in the afternoon) but enough to push the m-t-d to 217 so we’re still on track for a little longer.

    Not going to watch the debate or even follow anybody’s liveblog/twitter of it. We know what it’s gonna be like. Just Holding the Good Thought Joe manages to stay protected from twittler. That evil – and the evil that put him in power – should be isolated so it can’t hurt anybody else. Then we have a whole lot of cleaning, repairing, and healing to do. I hope the Universe cares enough to grant us time to do it.

    Meanwhile my online/offline fam/friends are hanging on. Some closer to the edge than others. Some needing more money to get out of their situations than others. But hanging on. We do what we can. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  2. Good morning, Meesefolk; 46 when I got up and headed to a rainy, grey 57. This is Day Two of rain…my plans of yardwork are turning into dreams of yardwork. Saturday and Sunday look to be fairly dry, but the highs are barely going to creep into the 50s. Time to suck it up if I want to get a few more outdoor tasks completed.

    I won’t be watching the debate tonight, and I’m not sure I’ll even follow on Twitter. I have the job interview tomorrow, so I should be focusing on low-stress activities. I have no idea what qualifies as low-stress these days, but I’m going to try reading some fiction and hope that’s distraction enough. I’m beginning to realize how fortunate I was to be working when the lockdowns started, and now that I’m effectively quarantining and locked down and with Hubby gone several days a week, I’m definitely feeling antsy and at loose ends. Not enough to settle for any job that comes along, but certainly enough to look in directions I wouldn’t normally consider (I applied for a seasonal, temp position with USPS yesterday!).

    Good day to and for all…and belated anniversary best wishes, Diana!

    • {{{DoReMI}}} I understand antsy. LOL. Actually a seasonal temp position might even be a good thing considering that you’re also pondering moving closer to your daughter. Give you some income and a bit more space to ponder in as it were. moar {{{HUGS}}}

  3. Good morning, 42 and partly sunny. Nighttime temps are in the 30’s now so the leaves may eventually fall from the trees. Seems like a slow process this year.

    I escaped reality with a beautiful gardening book yesterday, Windcliff, A Story of People, Plants, and Gardens, by Daniel Hinkley I’ve got a lot to do in my own garden to get ready for winter but I’m procrastinating. My container plants are still blooming and the plants I want to prune aren’t dormant yet so it’s easier to wait. I’ll be sorry when I’m working in the wet cold rain!

    Best wishes to all as we continue to count down to the election. Take care.

  4. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

    It is 37 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 43. It rained all day yesterday, stormed through the night and is expected to continue to rain through the afternoon.

    I didn’t watch the debate but I checked Twitter this morning to make sure that the Deranged Occupant did not physically attack our nominee; that was my main worry. Someone tweeted that tRump was better behaved but did not say or do anything that would make him improve his standing with any undecided or Biden leaning voters. Joe Biden did fine and most of the overnight “debate polls” said he won the debate by an average of about 54% to 36%. As one commenter said, now we finish voting.

    I was glad to see that Democrats on the Judiciary Committee boycotted the Mrs. Jesse Barrett vote, putting in their empty chairs photo-posters of Americans who will be harmed when she becomes the 5th vote to repeal the ACA. We can’t stop her getting on the court but we can use the vote to send a lot of Republican Senators packing. We won on health care in 2018, we can win on health care in 2020. The ACA is unlikely to be struck down until next year when we can fix it; the justices don’t generally rule on an issue right after the hearing, they can take months – really, up until June 30th – to issue a decision.

    I have a few projects cooking right now and I can’t read any of the overnight news. That is probably good, it is always better when the hot takes cool down a bit after an event like the debate.

    See all y’all later!

  5. Friday Meese. 60 and cloudy here in Kingston NY, going up to 70.
    POTUS Barack Obama’s speech in Philly is spreading to young folks via a mixtape layered with the music from Nas’ “Ether” (rap’s most famous diss track)
    Whether or not rap is your thing,it currently has more than 2 million views

    • I love this, particularly since (as hard as it is to believe) this is quite possibly the first full-length introduction to Obama that a lot of younger people have. Maybe not the 18 year olds who are voting, but certainly a good number of the 16 and younger cohort. And it’s always a good thing for people to see goodness and decency and compassion and humor at work in politics (or anywhere). It’s all too easy to forget that in the Age of tRumpism.

      • Agree. We tend to forget that there are now young people old enough to vote who may not have anything but fuzzy memories of Obama.

        • The younger kids loved President Obama; he was not a stranger in public schools, engaged and interested. His and Michelle’s school age children initiatives were popular.

          I was looking at the amazing early vote totals for the 18-29 cohort and if they reflect a huge turnout of the youngs, we will be fine. They don’t like tRump, they don’t like what he and his political party are doing to their planet and their future. I just hope they vote down-ticket and give Joe and Kamala a congressional majority. You can do a lot just by cleaning out the Trumpean Stables but we need legislation to do the big stuff.

  7. Good morning, Meesefolk; 55 now heading to 75 with a 90% chance of rain. Right now, there’s no rain but very thick fog, and my widget tells me that the rain will come later in the afternoon. That’s fine with me since my interview is at 11 this morning; this should mean that I don’t have to bother with a raincoat or worry about walking in looking like a drowned rat.

    I got my final paycheck today, and I think they messed up. When you walk off the job like I did, the final check is supposed to be reduced to minimum wage, and as best as I can figure, they forgot to do that. There’s a part of me that feels I should contact them and offer to pay back the overage, but the other, louder, I-told-you-that-my-job-couldn’t-be-done-by-just-anyone part of me is saying that it’s not my responsibility to fix their mistakes at this point. Guess which voice I’m listening to? :D I also noticed this week that the company is now advertising for a regional director of operations, which is the position that has been held by the clown that decided that non-clinicals should get certified in a clinical field. It could well be that the opening is for a different region, but since I know that I’m not the only payroll/HR person who quit in the past month, it could be that the RDO lost his job over the exodus(es). I’m holding my Schadenfreude at bay since I don’t really know…but just barely.

    Good day to and for all!

    • {{{DoReMI}}} Holding the Good Thought – for you, for the workers where you used to work, and for the residents. And 🤞🤞 for the job interview – whichever way you decide you want it to go. Healing Energy and moar {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning. Still hot in Austin — 75 this morning, but a cold front is coming this afternoon & it’ll drop to the 50s. I may walk/run this afternoon after work; or in the morning when it’ll be truly chilly. Today: work till 3:45.

  9. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! This will be a drive-by post because I’m due at the nail salon within the next hour. The early morning gray mist, which was not as thick as yesterday’s, has given way to partly cloudy skies of white cloud veiling the pale blue. Right now it’s 60 F. in Ashburn, on its way up to 77 F. Curse this warm weather! I like October to behave like October.

    Didn’t watch the debate but enjoyed the Netflix version of “Rebecca.” Quite well done, I thought. Eleven more days, Meese!

    Incredibly, yesterday I made granola in the oven using a friend’s recipe. Even though I cut the amount of sugar called for in half, it is still too sweet for ,my taste. It’s good, though, and we’ll eat it until it’s finished. It’s apple-cinnamon granola, yum, yum.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  10. Our high of 64 happened a couple of hours ago and the PV system isn’t out of night mode yet. We had a spate of heavy rain, not even enough to measure, just after the temps peaked. It’s drizzling now and should finish tapering off before noon. I wish it would take the clouds with it but according to the widget it ain’t gonna. sigh. We got 9.4 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d of 226.6 is still on track – but we’ve got to get at least 4 today and average 10/day to stay on track and while the first might happen the second also ain’t gonna. sigh. The temps will slowly but steadily go down to the mid 30 just before dawn tomorrow. Fire in the woodstove tonight.

    I haven’t looked at twitter yet (which is where, besides here, I get my news) but I doubt any of it will surprise me. Might disgust me but won’t surprise me. I ran out of being surprised by any Genocidal Old Party evil or their MSM propaganda supporting of same over a couple of decades back. I think we’ll “blue wave” this election. I don’t know if that will be enough. Maybe – just maybe – if our team manages to pull off an FDR-type first 100 days we’ll be given enough time to actually repair, replace, and rebuild for longer term good. We shall see what we shall see.

    On the closer, more personal, level a grand slam win on 11/3 isn’t going to help my fam/friends online & offline – won’t pay anybody’s rent or put out a single wildfire or make health diagnoses more hopeful or… So we keep on truckin’ and do what we can. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  11. Good morning, 43, dark and raining in Bellingham. I slept late today, but I don’t have to be anywhere so it doesn’t really matter. I watched some of the debate last night, and to my relief Joe did just fine and tRump didn’t. A trying to be calm tRump is still a lying awful man.

    I’ve got laundry to do this morning and Emma is coming to sew with me this afternoon so I’d best get busy. Best wishes to all.

  12. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 36 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 37. Mostly cloudy skies are in the forecast.

    tRump will be in Wisconsin today. The Milwaukee airport denied his campaign a place to rally, citing his refusal to limit his gathering to 250 people – a City of Milwaukee rule. So he will arrive at Mitchell Field and drive to covid-red Waukesha County and hold his rally at the commuter airport there. That he is taking his infested entourage around the country, spreading disease in his wake, is deplorable. I hope his voters become too sick to drag themselves to the polls in 10 days. He is going to a town in La Crosse County next week – the narrative that Hillary lost Wisconsin because she did not visit here is burned into his reptilian brain and he is convinced that showing up and spreading disease is the way to win this year. We still have a lot of young people in Wisconsin, the new voters who elected Governor Tony Evers and re-elected Tammy Baldwin and gave us a Democratic Attorney General in 2018 are ready to flex their electoral muscles in another statewide race (we can’t win the gerrymanders) and turn us blue again. I hope so – it was awful to live in a tRump state even though he won by fewer than 30,000 votes and we were ratfked by the BernieOrBust write-in vote and Jill Stein “protests.” This year, the Green Party is not on the ballot, having turned out to be incompetent as well as awful people, willing tools of the destroyers of our planet.

    Welcome to Wisconsin, Covid Trump.

    See all y’all later!

  13. Puerto Rico

    • my friends & I called her The Voice of God – it was so good to live here when she was out & about, just seeing her out randomly

    • Goddess, that voice. And that woman. I wanted her to be the first Black & woman president. sigh.

  14. Chilly morning here — 52 degrees when I was out on my walk/run. did really well — 7 running segments, each was 1 minute & 15 seconds. Today’s agenda: watch the news & talk to my Twitter friends, buy groceries. There’s some British crime thing on this evening, with Gillian Anderson.

  15. It’s 42 heading for 52 and overcast. I may have to turn on the furnace today or tomorrow. I don’t want to. Pretty much same reason I didn’t want to turn on the A/C – the dust & dander the blower sends all over the place plays merry hell with my sinuses. But sooner or later I’ll have to. We only got 2.5 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d (229) is no longer on track. Nor does the foreseeable forecast give any chance for catching up. sigh.

    So many things hanging on this election. So many things too immediate for this election to impact. We keep on truckin’ maybe we’ll get where we want to be. And lose a minimum of folks on the trip. We hope. Aji was late w/ her nightly NM COVID19 report – after I went offline – so I need to go boost it now. Among other things. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  16. Good morning, 40, windy and partly sunny. Mist rings are on the windows and the radiators are hot so it look’s like winter is coming. I should empty a few small pots and move some plants to more sheltered spots today. And we need to remember to drain the hoses.

    Wa State is basically just waiting for the election to be over. We see very few adds and will have no candidate visits this year, which is fine with me if it means covid/tRump stays away. It’s nice to know our ballots are completed and delivered.

    Best wishes to all.
