Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: November 1st

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

  1. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! Are we stressed out yet?

It’s partly cloudy here in Ashburn at present, with a current temperature of 43 F. Later today it will be sunny and 74 F. Walking weather, if I can drag my lazy self out.

I simply cannot comment on the election, it’s too stressful.

To distract myself from the ongoing stress, I’m creating a “Welcome to the World of Women” basket for my granddaughter’s impending menarche. So far I’ve gathered a pot of cream for those aches and a couple of heating pad patches; a 5-year diary with a coded lock; a “first moontime” card from an artist in the U.K.; a bar of chocolate with raspberry filling; a box of Traditional Medicinals of raspberry-leaf teabags; a tube of clear lip gloss; another roll-on tube of lavender scent; and Thinx underwear. All will be wrapped in red paper and placed in a red basket, if I can find one. If not, an ordinary wicker basket will do.

I’ve read accounts from women who said at their first menarche their mothers slapped them in the face. Great Goddess! What kind of crappy patriarchal behavior is that?

At the moment Miss PC is still very much a child and doesn’t want anything to do with all of this. However, as we know, it’s going to happen whether she wants it to or not.

In other news, as usual I’m behind in my work. Lawks. I lack self-discipline, that’s the problem. I found Election Day and the subsequent stress very tiring.

Wishing a peaceful day to all at the Pond, with the hope we will receive some good news very soon.

  2. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is 43 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 68. Sunny skies are in the forecast. It looks like our All Halloween Summer is going to last into next week. I will enjoy it while it lasts.

I wanted to stay up until Biden took the lead in Georgia, expected to happen 11pm my time, but I saw a tweet that suggested that the person who posts the totals had left for the day even though the Clayton County votes had been tallied and were ready. So I went to bed and when I woke up I saw that it had been announced at 4am. I got a good night’s sleep for the second night in a row – since Joe told me Wednesday that he had this. Now we wait for Pennsylvania, the death blow to the Trump re-election. I would like to get Nevada and certainly Arizona going blue would be very nice but I think this may be the election that finally puts to rest the notion that there is a “Latino Vote”. They are not a monolithic voting bloc like Black women voters (and to some extent, Black men voters) – their politics depend a lot on the origin country (Cuban Americans are a lost cause, for example) and their socio-economic status. The only voting group, it seems, that is unwilling to say “I got mine, screw you” is Black women. We owe them a debt of gratitude for saving us from tRump – they deserve more seats at the table. And a big shout-out to Stacey Abrams, I am so glad she did not run for president or vice president and stayed in Georgia to turn it blue. I look forward to calling her Governor-elect Stacey Abrams in two years.

I was disheartened that the “all Democrats are socialists and want to defund the police” narrative was used so effectively against some of our House members. All Democrats are not – I am not and our president-elect and vice-president-elect are not – but those carrying the loud and proud berner flag still don’t understand electoral politics and how their rhetoric harms their colleagues. I am really sad that Rep. Lauren Underwood (IL-14) might lose her seat and I hope there is a place for her in the Biden Administration if she does. Nancy Pelosi’s majority has shrunk and she will have to compromise on legislation to keep those who survived the mini-shellacking and refuse to be lashed to the too-far-left-for-most-Americans wing of the party. It will be interesting to see how things pay out.

I got the three things done that I needed to get done so that I can eat breakfast and then sit in front of the TV again to watch Pennsylvania and Nevada flip blue. I will cross my fingers that nothing new comes across my desk.

    See all y’all later!

  3. I had to turn the a/c back on last night. I’ve got it set to 77, trying to conserve energy, but I just can’t take it when it’s too hot. Today’s plan: I just have to work until 3:30. Watching Star Trek DS9, trying to avoid the news, at least until around 10 when one of the states said they will have an update.

  4. It’s 54 and heading for 73 this Friday morning in Fayetteville, AR. Sunny too, at the moment, although “partly cloudy” is the forecast. The angle of the sun means less power per hour even when it actually hits the PV panels. The oak tree is a gorgeous yellow and gold, but those yellow and gold leaves are still casting dense shadow on the panels until around 10 am. We generated 7.8 KWHs yesterday and are at 41 for the m-t-d. Still on track.

Vote counting is still on track. Not here, of course. We’re done and just as bloody red as we were going into the election. But it’s just a matter of getting the votes actually counted before the federal leadership returns to sanity. Holding the Good Thought for Lauren Underwood – I’d seen she’d lost but apparently it was just her opponent pulling a trump and declaring victory while he was ahead. The counters just kept counting and the margin has narrowed considerably. We shall see what we shall see. As to Pelosi, woman’s a political genius. Having less to work with won’t stop that. And fortunately neither will the attacks from our team – mostly based on her not doing what they wanted when they wanted her to & short, out of context, clips the MSM plays to make her look elitist, racist, and otherwise Deplorable. And the number of calls for strong women doing the best geedee job they can do under the circumstances to retire because they’re old! Sorry. Throwing temper tantrums doesn’t get you anything but politically spanked in Congress. Those well over 400 bills Pelosi sent to the Senate are the results of knowledge and experience in how the system works. The Senate majority leader pretending they aren’t there is no excuse for our team to do the same.

    I got my shopping done yesterday, which feels good. I was getting down there on kitty supplies. And protein. I’m going to my friends house (actually outside – blessings that it’s a nice day) for coffee shortly. Slightly belated birthday visit (she turned 60 on Wednesday). I’ll be leaving in about 20 minutes which should give me time for a brief check over on twitter to see if anything’s decided yet. Ha. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good morning, Meesefolk; 46 when I got up (at 0430!) and headed to a mostly sunny 68 today. I may head outside to do yardwork, or I may not. My sleep pattern is disrupted enough that all I can think about right now is a nap now and letting later fall out as it may.

The job hunt is going nowhere; I’m still applying, but there’s just not a lot out there at the moment. Funny thing, pandemics… I’m not thrilled about that, but I tightened our budget down hard so we should be fine. On the other hand, as I watch the Covid numbers in Macomb County climb and climb, staying home doesn’t seem like the worst thing in the world. The nursing home where I worked was hit hard; as of last Saturday, 7 residents (one death) and at least 3 employees. The company moves ill residents to an isolation wing, and if the elder is still healthy enough to another facility that has been designated as a Covid hub facility. So hopefully they’ll be able to arrest the spread. I was stunned by the news, because when I was there, we were almost Covid-free (one nurse and three residents who had been transferred in for less than 24 hours before being sent back to the hospital). It just goes to show you how quickly the damn virus can take over; the numbers I was told on Saturday happened in one week.

And on that note, for once the news from the election is actually the good news of the day. I also really appreciated the news from the President-Elect’s campaign yesterday that his PCR test was negative. I spent the last week of the campaign worrying about the risk of exposure to him, the Vice President-Elect, and all those campaigning on his behalf. As if there weren’t enough other things to worry about!

Good day to and for all!

  6. Good morning, 43 and partly sunny in Bellingham. My morning mood is much lighter today….we may have a president elect soon! tRump isn’t gone yet but his days are numbered and I’m counting down.

RonK is going to visit some old growth trees today and I may have a clear enough head to actually sew something. Best wishes to all.

  7. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 54 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 70. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

I expected the election to be called yesterday but it is apparent that the lickspittle media is STILL worried about upsetting Donald Trump and the unhinged lunatics who support him. Every day that they give him to usurp the national stage to spew lies and gin up outrage within his base adds to the damage they have already done to our country by their normalization of a literal fascist and bothsidesing the political party that embraced him for tax cuts and court picks.

The American people finished the job started by the House of Representatives but which cowardly Senate Republicans refused to do – we removed the impeached president. We don’t get to remove him right now, unfortunately, but my sense is that he will quit and let Pence clean up the messes he made rather than have to deal with the transition of power. I caught a bit of an interview with his niece Mary Trump the other day and she thinks this blow could be the one that pushes him over the edge. I would prefer to not see it.

I walked into my office this morning and was struck by the mess. Stacks of papers that I need to sort then store or shred, equipment to dispose of and set up – it looks like a junk yard! I need to see which projects I can delay so that I can put a few hours into organizing the stacks and planning what needs to be done. Although a nap looks better …

    See all y’all later!

  8. Saturday Meese. 42 going up to 71 here in Kingston NY. Lovely Indian summer.
    Puerto Rico

  9. Good Saturday morning, Meese. It is already a glorious day here in Ashburn with sunlight shining on the red-gold foliage against a pale blue, cloudless November sky. It’s 46 F. now, aiming for a high of 70 F. today, and it’s going to be like that until next Thursday.

Waiting, waiting, like everyone else. Someone joked they’ve been stress eating so much they’ll get to 270 before Joe Biden does! I feel the same way. My weight is deplorable.

As Dearly is going to the grocery store for me, I’m going to walk Monty for him, so I must get on with things. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • Ha!! Stress eating getting us to 270 before Joe gets there feels like a real possibility! I have been eating Jelly Bellies like they are popcorn (they aren’t.)

  10. It’s 50 heading for 73 and sunny again. We got 8 KWHs yesterday and the m-t-d (49.36) is still on track. I had a very pleasant visit with my friend yesterday. It would have been more so if the guy in the coffee shop hadn’t decided it was OK to remove his mask as he was handing me my credit card back. So we took our mochas outside to the porch, drank them more quickly than we’d intended to, and had the rest of our visit in her front yard.

At this rate we may have to find somebody “official” the MSM won’t dare not carry to declare Biden the winner. That’s another thing the fascist RW propaganda machine has done – convinced a majority of Americans that it’s the Press who calls elections. No, actually it’s the Secretary of State or Election Commission in each state. All the Press does is report – with graphics to show cumulative electors for the Electoral College. And one more time, we have got to dismantle the propaganda machine if we are to have any hope of not just progress but of not completely falling to fascism. We’re well into fascism already of course. The nation was fairly fascist to begin with. But it won’t take much more damage before we’re into all-powerful hereditary president for life (i.e. absolute monarchy) territory.

    But we still have a chance. So we’ll still keep working. My friends/fam online & off are “all right right now” and while that’s also not the goal, as with getting Joe and Kamala running the Executive branch, it’s a breather. Breathing is good. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  11. AP just called it! We won! History been made. Celebrate. Take a breather. Then we gotta get back to work to make it real. But for now. Celebrate. 🎶🎊🎉👍👍🎶❤🎁💙❤😍🎶💕💕

  12. Good morning, 44 and cloudy in Bellingham. I woke up late this morning , to GOOD NEWS! So relieved the wait is over and Biden and Harris are now officially in place to lead our nation.

Thanks to everyone for the caring support around the moose pond.
