Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: November 8th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

    • I think Republicans don’t care if their electeds are stupid – they elected Tommy Tuberville over Doug Jones!

  2. Got in a good walk this morning. 5 running segments, yay me. Today’s plan: just have to work till 3:30.

  3. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s cloudy today, although “they” say it might clear up later. At any rate, there won’t be any rain. The current temperature in Ashburn is 49 F., going up to 61 F. later.

    Still making good progress on the articles for the quarterly. If they use all my stuff, I’ll have written half of it by the time it comes out. This morning after the usual chores I’m going to a book signing for one of the authors in our community. She’s a real sweetie, as well as being the subject of one of the articles I’ve just written.

    Had a miserable night so will definitely be ready for an afternoon rest.

    Read the front section of the WaPo this morning and felt so depressed afterwards that I think I’ll take the advice I received and refrain from reading it from now on. The awfulness seems never-ending.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  4. It’s 40 heading for 59. Sunny at the moment but I can already see the clouds moving in. Hopefully they’ll move out again in time to generate some electricity. It did that yesterday. We ended up with 6.3 KWHs which isn’t on track and just barely what I use in a day, but I didn’t think we’d get that when the clouds moved in midmorning. The m-t-d is 88 and that’s still on track.

    The thing about Friday 13th being bad is just more evidence that fundies can’t count and never could – and also that they’re so inferior they can only make themselves look good by insisting everything else is evil. IF the person whose name wasn’t Jesus (no J in Hebrew) was 3 days in the tomb and rose on Sunday morning, he wasn’t put in the tomb on Friday. Either he went into the tomb before sunset on Wednesday or he didn’t rise until Tuesday. Harsh realities of math and all that. And 12 apostles plus the person who wasn’t named Jesus = 13 so if it weren’t for the fact that 13 is a sacred number for a bunch of not-Xtian Traditions it would be sacred to Xtians. Not funny how that works. The same attitudes are very prevalent in fundies to this day (& is part of how we got twitler). Some things – and people – never change.

    Hands, eyes, and sinuses still flaring. My stuff isn’t as bad as most other folks. I’m not on any kind of medical or pharmaceutical regimen. Just take a couple of Ibuprofen or a TBSP of brandy with tea or something to deal with it. But that doesn’t mean it feels good. sigh. Anyway, I got stuff to do. Boosting Aji’s clinic fundraiser – catch the morning folks as well as the evening ones. Purposing a candle for Fineena – not only does she have health issues (got a CT scan for lungs & pancreas Monday) but her niece and great-nephew have both tested positive for COVID. Mostly praying/Channeling for everybody else. But there is light at the end of the tunnel. At least this tunnel. Bright the day Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  5. Good morning, 47 and raining in Bellingham. Covid numbers are increasing at an alarming rate in the PNW, so we’re accepting the reality of just staying safe for TDay and Christmas. We’ll connect with family via one device or another, look as presentable as we decide necessary, and keep our covid confinment routine as it is. Oh well, it’s less fun but lots less work too.

    I’m slow and sleepy today and avoiding the news so I’ll wish everyone well and try to get my day underway.

  6. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 27 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 45. Sunny this morning then rainy this afternoon into evening.

    The transition continues apace with Joe Biden moving forward and ignoring the blithering idiot in the Oval Office. No, Pfizer did not develop their vaccine with help from the tRump Maladministration – they signed on to be part of Operation Warp Speed’s delivery phase and worked with a German partner. I am wondering what Joe Biden can do to help save Americans from the pandemic before he gets into office. Can he have his COVID-19 team contact manufacturers to get them moving on producing PPE with the promise that they will be paid when he takes office and can direct the funds? He has a bully pulpit to try to get people to mask up but I feel like Democrats are already masking and that there is no one to reach. Red state governors who resisted calling on their citizens to take precautions are now asking them to wear masks and social distance, underscoring that their defiance was purely political. May their epitaphs include the number of people they killed by their craven cowardice in refusing to defy their political leader.

    I am not going to worry right now about what that this election exposed: that, as Ann Coulter pointed out, Americans want trumpism but without Trump and that support of trumpism, manifesting in electing and re-electing Republican Senators and Congressmembers will likely make our country ungovernable. In my nightmares, I see the government shutting down in the middle of this pandemic because Republican Senators block increasing the debt limit unless we start paying down the debt they incurred with their tax cut – and using it to cut earned benefits and safety net programs. It will be a true test of Joe Biden’s Senate contacts to stop that from happening. Unless he can get a Senator or two to flip and give us the majority, I don’t see how that happens – we will not have any power over which bills get to the Senate floor.

    I am going to retire the Fighting Back posts – we fought back and won!! When Joe Biden is sworn in we will go back to having Democratic Party Weekly Addresses from the White House and I will pick those up as I did during Barack Obama’s presidency. If Joe makes an important speech, I will post it like I did last week but it looks like, at this point, there won’t be any regularly scheduled speeches/video statements from the Biden Transition.

    See all y’all later!

    • Good morning, Jan. I read that one of the reasons—in fact, most likely the Maine reason—was that Sara Gideon wasn’t from Maine to start with. Considering there was a $2 million GoFundMe kitty before Gideon even announced, it is truly amazing that Gideon lost. However, it seems that a Rethug Maine journo picked up the huntin’, shootin’, fishin’ crowd with appeals to their rights to carry on as usual and that’s what did Gideon in, along with birther comments about how she wasn’t born in Maine.

      Did this give Collins the scare of her life or will it do the opposite and enable her to keep right on being the Bitch of the Far North?

  7. Good morning. Was lovely to sleep in — and really sleep. Today’s plan: watch the news, buy groceries. We’re having a holiday luncheon over Zoom at work next week, that’ll be chaotic but fun. I should think of something colorful to make for next week’s lunch. I usually like to make simple things that I can eat right out of the fridge, don’t pay attention to how they look.

  8. It’s 55 heading for 66 overcast and drizzling. Which it looks like it’s gonna do all day. Sigh. Yesterday the clouds stayed north of the sun and we generate 9.7 KWHs! That’s the best for November so far and the last week or so of October. The m-t-d is 98 which is on track and even enough over to make up for diddly sun today. It’s not high enough to make up for more than today but it’s still good.

    Got up to a skull-banging headache, cat barf in the hall, and an overturned litter box. Not really the way I like to start my day. But the latter two have been dealt with and the first is easing up with breakfast. I still have some ibuprofen in my near future but things are getting better. I devoutly hope things are getting better for everybody else. I’ve a beeswax candle on my altar purposing for a bunch of issues – mostly friends and mostly health-related – I’m planning to burn Monday (beginning of the 2nd half of the month). As with everything else, we shall see what we shall see. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  9. Good Saturday morning, Moosekind! Here in Ashburn we have a dim blue November sky with cirrus clouds moving slowly across its surface. Sunlight is shining in a rather subdued fashion on the woods across the way. Many of the trees are completely bare now. It really looks like November! The current temperature is 48 F., going up to 56 F. It’s a good day for a walk later on.

    Not much to say except that I may order a copy of Obama’s new book, just to show my contempt for the Magas. I find nonfiction trying. I couldn’t even get through Hillary’s What Happened because it hurt too much to read it. Obama as president was treated the worst of any president in my lifetime (possibly excepting Truman, although I was too young to know what that was all about). Obama received flak from the so-called “left” and sheer shit from the right. In fact, I used to think the WaPo’s Ruth Marcus’ job title was “Obama-Scold.” If she starts scolding the new administration the WaPo is going to hear from me! I’m really sick of that crap.

    On the home front, Monty is suspiciously quiet this morning. We’ll have to keep a wary eye on him. Once I’m washed and dressed I plan to spend this day on my own work, even though the rest of my other work still has a couple of tasks unfinished. I’ll worry about that on Monday. A visit to the grocery store is in the offing because I need items for tomorrow’s breakfast.

    Also, it’s time to start work on my Christmas newsletter. I send it instead of cards to most people, although a few people expect actual Christmas cards. I have more of those than I will ever be able to use.

    I’m not delivering presents up and down the hallway to the neighbors this year. For one thing, I won’t have my usual Christmas Elves to help me. For years I did it mainly for Nora, who simply loved delivering the bags and talking to the recipients. Along those same lines, this year residents at the Home are being asked to donate money to Toys for Tots rather than actual toys. Suits me. Last year the present I donated was stolen right out of the box, which left me spitting teeth with fury.

    That’s enough from me. Wishing a good day to all the Pond! Oh, one last thought—apparently the U.K. has a new prime minister!

  10. Good morning, 42 and partly sunny in Bellingham. Our family holiday plans are all on hold so we’re trying to make the front porch be warmer and more comfortable for visiting. Yesterday we shuffled rugs in the basement and brought the one that can get wet without worry to the porch. We’ll buy some new chair cushions for both chairs and to use on the steps and I’ve got a basket full of blankets inside the door. Today we’ll put clear lights on the porch tree and add a plug strip for devices. My hope is that we can be relatively warm and dry so we can share some holiday fun outdoors where it’s safer to be together.

    Take care everyone……so grateful we can gather at the Moose Pond!
