Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: November 15th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

COUNTING DOWN THE TIME UNTIL DECENCY RETURNS …

  1. Saturday Meese. Up early cause I couldn’t sleep. 42 going up to 54 here in Kingston NY

    Puerto Rico

    • Senate Democratic leader Schumer has asked for a 90-day delay in awarding $10 billion in funding to rebuild the electrical grid in Puerto Rico, seeking additional comments. I am going to guess that it is so that the Biden Administration is deciding how to managing those funds and not the outgoing Papertowel Thrower’s grifty pals. Here is the request:

      Dear [FEMA] Administrator Gaynor:

I write today to strongly urge you to provide a 90-day extension on the November 22, 2020 deadline for comments on the Programmatic Environmental Assessment for the Utility Repair, Replacement, and Realignment of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. It is imperative that all members of the community have the opportunity to provide input as this assessment will impact their health and safety.

This environmental assessment comes as a result of the historic allocation of funds, almost $10 billion, to rebuild the electrical grid on the Island after the horrific hurricane season of 2017. This funding is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we cannot let it be squandered. The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) environmental assessment is an important first step in this process and the people of Puerto Rico need adequate time to respond. To date, at least nine organizations and community groups, actively engaged in energy issues, had not received any notice of this action, including: Comité Diálogo Ambiental, Inc. (“CDA”), El Puente de Williamsburg, Inc. – Enlace Latino de Acción Climática (“El Puente – ELAC”), Comité Yabucoeño Pro-Calidad de Vida, Inc. (“YUCAE”), Alianza Comunitaria Ambientalista del Sureste, Inc. (“ACASE”), Sierra Club Puerto Rico, Inc. (“Sierra Club PR”), Mayagüezanos por la Salud y el Ambiente, Inc. (“MSA”), Coalición de Organizaciones Anti Incineración, Inc. (“COAI”), Amigos del Río Guaynabo, Inc. (“ARG”), Campamento Contra las Cenizas en Peñuelas, Inc. I appreciate FEMA’s efforts to ensure a safe, responsible, and transparent environmental assessment, however, I believe it is imperative that the interested and impacted communities, individuals, and organizations have adequate time to submit their comments and concerns.

Therefore, it is my sincere request that FEMA to offer a 90-day extension for comments on the Programmatic Environmental Assessment for the Utility Repair, Replacement, and Realignment of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. We must ensure our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico have their voices heard in this momentous decision.

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 27 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 41. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast.

I am watching the unfolding drama of Republican electeds trying to embrace their Dear Leader and reality at the same time. I sincerely hope that there is a price to pay for the damage they are doing to our country’s institutions. I know, I know. It will never happen. Since Nixon resigned over Watergate, the Republican Party has risen from the ashes over and over, doing more damage with each new “president” elected with the votes of racists and christianists, appointed by the courts, and/or put into power by the Electoral College, a shameful vestige of our country’s slaveholding past. I hope that tRump continues his influence on his party and that eventually enough voters reject not only tRump but the party willing to compromise every value to keep power. Prove me wrong, Georgia voters! Win us the Senate.

Another white male shooter is loose in Wisconsin after targeting people of color at a suburban Milwaukee mall. Add him to the Kenosha killer whose right-wing fans donated money so he could post $2 million bail so he can be free – for what, no one exactly knows. There is about a zero chance he will be found when it is time for his trial. AmeriKKKa sucks.

President-Elect Biden is assembling his cabinet and we will soon find out how he carefully walks the line between “building his own team” and “pleasing Republicans who will likely control confirmation.” I want Susan Rice for Secretary of State and Tom Cotton was apoplectic about that possibility. If that leads to a significant medical event that requires him to resign from the Senate – or be hospitalized, unable to vote for 3 or 4 months – that would be a bonus. Joe Biden does not owe his cowardly former colleagues any kind of deference and I hope at least one or two of his picks is an eye poke that he is willing to go to the mat on. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Mitt Romney have already signaled that they will give deference to the incoming president’s cabinet choices. If the Senate ends up 52-48, that will be all we need.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Good Saturday morning, Moosekind! It’s a brilliantly sunny day and quite mild—55 F. now, on its way up to 63 F. later.

Today between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. today the Loudoun County Public Library will announce the winner of the short story contest. If I were to win I know exactly what I’d do with the $200 prize—I’d donate it to a food bank and a diaper bank. The slogan, “Every baby deserves a change” really hits the mark with me, for some reason. I suppose that derives from looking my share of babies!

The news is too depressing to comment on, so for now I’ll just wish everyone a pleasant Saturday,

  4. In from my walk/run — 2 of my 6 running segments were 90 seconds! Even miniscule progress is still progress. Very warm today — 67 degrees already. Today’s agenda: sit & watch the news, buy groceries….. and that’s about it.

  5. It’s 59 and raining. PV system is still in night mode. Should get up to 66 in a few hours then start a long slow fair-continuous drop through today and tomorrow to 30 just before dawn Monday. Seasonal weather and we can use the rain but it’s as depressing as our national situation. (Which includes our team having to fundraise for the transition money that should be coming from tax dollars while others on our team attack them for asking for money in the middle of a pandemic when tax dollars should pay for it. sigh)

Far as I’m concerned I’m watching the MSM play us like a violin. Fairly expertly, too. All those hopes raised about how everything would be different/the nightmare would be over with the election. Of course not. We’re still not in power. We still can’t do anything more than we could before the election. We cannot legally remove anybody from office or get any pandemic help to folks who need it without the approval of the Senate. So now it’s back to “attack Dems” because magic didn’t happen. Americans make me tired.

    Meanwhile I need to go run the car for a bit. It hasn’t been for 2 weeks and I’m afraid the battery’s going die if I don’t. (If it hasn’t already of course.) But I don’t want to go anywhere. It’s really difficult for me to fire up the engine and drive around aimlessly. With a friend driving around the country side and looking at the scenery is pleasant. Alone, no. But it’s one more thing that needs to be done. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

    • I had two COVID-shutin battery events in the past two months so I broke down and replaced my battery a bit early in the warranty period. The cold crank power was in the yellow so it is good to get it in the green with winter coming. The last guy who came by to jump said running it for 25 minutes is all I need. I have a reminder to do that but I often ignore it – because I am me!!

  6. Good morning, 40 and partly sunny in Bellingham. I focused on doing laundry yesterday so I feel like I actually accomplished something this morning! All the summer bedding is washed, ironed and ready to be put away as soon as someone carries the full laundry baskets upstairs for me.

I need to work on the piles of paper on my desk today and then my procrastination stacks will be relatively contained. Best wishes to all.
