Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: December 27th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

COUNTING DOWN THE TIME UNTIL DECENCY RETURNS …

  1. Good Friday afternoon, Moosekind. It’s nearly 3 p.m., almost time to put the kettle on. It’s 34 F. on a cold, rainy, miserable first day of January in Ashburn. My right foot is hurting so much I just took a couple of Advil. Right foot is going on its third week of feeling bad. Can’t figure out whether it’s arthritis or something else. However, enough of that.

Had a pleasant surprise this morning when Dearly checked his bank account and saw $1,200 sitting in it! This being the male chauvinist USA, he’s considered the most important person in the house so all refunds, stimulus checks, and whatnot go to him. It’s complicated, but after I receive my portion of the money next Tuesday I’ll be able to donate to bfitz’ and Aji’s friend.

We did manage to prop our eyelids open with toothpicks until midnight, so we saw the ball drop. After that I slept until 6:19 this morning. This is the first time in months that I’ve slept without the help of drugs. I’d like to try it again.

Other than that it’s a great afternoon to curl up by the fire and read. I’d empty the dishwasher if I weren’t afraid of making so much noise that I’d wake up Dearly. He had a miserable night\, so I urged him to sleep.

Hope everyone at the Pond will have a nice, quiet evening.

    • My Pelosi check deposit showed up yesterday morning. I think I am going to spend it on ordering food to be delivered for the next month and staying away from other humans. The new super-contagious variant is scary and people here appear to be thinking that the mere existence of a vaccine has made the virus go away. Sigh.

  2. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 23 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 28. Mostly sunny skies are in the forecast. We got some snow yesterday but not much – it should be mainly cold and sunny for the next few days.

America – the tragedy of the flaming assholes. The Senate overrode their crime boss’ veto of the Defense Authorization Bill with only a handful of dissenters: people in deep blue states who never have to worry about getting turned out of office and the Republican deadenders who support their leader with no questions asked. Notably absent in the NOs was Ron Freaking Johnson who only has one day left as the Stupidest Man in the Senate as Alabama’s Tommy Tuberville will be sworn in tomorrow. I wonder if RoJo is hearing the 2022 footsteps and wondering how allowing a half a million people to die in service to his party will go down in two years. Right now there are 74 million people who think that is Just Fine (and many are in Wisconsin) but in 2 years, when the damage is tallied up, I hope to hell that the enablers are punished.

I am working today – January is an insanely busy month and I need to get ahead of the project list. Between clients needing accounting software changes and my own accounting, I am not going to be able to slow down much. I am hoping for a less hectic 2021 but that may not happen for a few weeks.

    See all y’all later!

  3. Saturday Meese. 32 going up to 47 here in Kingston NY.
I don’t usually post what nasty trolls are saying – however I will today. If you have a twitter account, please report, and block this. Note that 17K equally sick people liked this tweet

  4. Puerto Rico

  5. Good morning! I got in a good walk yesterday — just under 2 miles. Wore a mask since I figured: 1. There’s be people out since it was a sunny afternoon — and I was right, I saw maybe 10 walkers, plus a couple of groups of cyclists. 2. Pollen. We’ve had so much cedar pollen in the air — and sunny, windy days make the damn cedar trees so happy…. Anyway, going to go again this afternoon, since I signed up for a “New Year’s 5K”, and I’m going to count it as done if I spread it out over 2 days. For now, watching the news, drinking tea, watching the news.

  6. It’s 33 heading for 36, overcast, and drizzling. I can’t say we started the new year off right with electricity generation since we only got just over 2KWHs but it’s a start. We have a whole year for things to get better.

Most folks I’ve talked to have their $600 so I probably do too. To find out I either wait until Monday when the credit union’s open and check my balance or (finally) sign up for “online banking” – with another password and pin to keep track of. I haven’t decided yet. I have decided where the money goes though – part to cover the chimney folks fixing my wood stove, part to JoanMar, and basically a “bag of groceries” each to as many folks as I can until it’s gone. I am blessed with solid housing, decent & plentiful food, potable water at my fingertips, and most months enough left over to do regular giving. I periodically get extra blessings and treats from friends and family (like the pizza my son brought me yesterday evening for dinner – & today’s lunch). I have family and friends, online mostly but some off, who are also blessings in my life. How can I not share?

    Off to boost stuff on twitter. After more coffee. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  7. Good Saturday morning, Meese. It’s a beautiful day, ironically, in view of the news we received a couple of hours ago. Right now we have sunlight and a clear blue sky after yesterday’s dolorous cold, rain, and gloom. The current temp. in Ashburn is 45 F., on its way up to 53 F.

I was going to whine about what a wretched night I had but that’s nothing compared to the telephone call we received from our great-niece in the U.K. Our sister-in-law died yesterday, at 5 p.m. London time. It wasn’t Covid. She was 92 and had been bedridden for the past several years. We last saw her in September 2016, before the dementia had completely taken hold. She was still out and about in those days.

So we’re feeling sad. She was one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. She had a good life until the last several years. We even met up in Australia a couple of times. Our family is the traveling kind.

We had received a letter from our nephew Simon just a couple of days ago, New Year’s Eve. It was a sad letter. He told us that his part of the country (Kent) was under Tier 4 lockdown. He attached a photo of himself with his mother, and she did look terrible. When I showed Dearly the email printout I remarked that P. probably wouldn’t be around much longer. Sadly, that came true yesterday.,

I plan to go back to bed in a little while. Not feeling up to much.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

  8. Good morning, 50, rain and wind in Bellingham. I seem to have taken a vacation of sorts…..naps, reading, and no agenda. We’ll take the tree out today and life will get busier again.

My daughter got me started with a new series by Jodi Taylor, The Chronicles of St Mary’s. I’ve read the first two and I hope the bookstore has the next one because I’m ready for another adventure.

Best wishes to all on the blustery day.
