Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: January 17th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool, shown here with 3 pages of comments available.

COUNTING DOWN THE TIME UNTIL DECENCY RETURNS …

  1. It’s 37 going to 50 and sunshine – supposedly all day. I like sunshine. Yesterday we got 6.8 KWHs and we’re at 125 for the m-t-d. We’ve got enough time to get over 180. Heck, we’ve got enough time to get over 200. We shall see if we get enough sunshine.

    Well, politics will never be boring but we’re getting back to a sane world where it can run in the background and we can focus on other things. The way things should be – like you get into your car to go to work and you concentrate on traffic and getting where you’re going on time. The way things have been is like being on a 1000-mile road trip and the car starts making ominous noises and various gauges are creeping into the “uh-oh” range – all the focus is on the car and whether or not it’s going to keep going or blow up or something and what little energy is left goes to keeping it on the road. Now our vehicle is road-worthy again. Needs some repair and a lot of maintenance, but road worthy. MSM is going to go back to ignoring what’s actually going on in favor of making up crap because the “news” will be so boring. Write/report: “Dems tried to do this good thing/appoint this good person. Rs tried to block them.” That’s the headline and the story. Only thing needed is to specify what good thing/which good person and how the Rs try to block. News you can actually watch while eating and not get sick.

    So now we get to work. And apparently our first major change in the Senate is to get rid of the used-to-be-tool-now-weapon filibuster so we can actually do that work. We shall see what we shall see. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  2. Good morning, 35 and clear in Bellingham. Looks like we’ll have to be patient and wait for our Dr.’s office to get the vaccine in. I spent hours looking for an alternative yesterday and no luck. However I did find a dermatologist for RonK to see so it wasn’t a total waste of time. He’s still healing from the surgery in Dec but will need to have follow up care.
    I finally slept all night, but reality is creeping in so I need to consume less news and listen to more music. Our government is now in experienced hands so I need to trust the process. But after the tRump disaster that’s hard to do!

    So back to my sewing room full of possibilities. I found all of my good feather pillow forms and have more old needlepoint pillow covers ready to sew so that’s what I’m going to do. Best wishes to all.

    • It’s funny – we felt as though paying attention to what was going on was important to keep the worst from happening! Maybe it did, there is a case to be made that millions of people putting their good intentions out on the universe can change things for the better. We should stay alert and send “a pox on your house” intentions to the Republicans who, it appears, thought about unity, realized that it meant accountability and restoration, and wanted none of it. They are now full-throated trumpers again and bent on protecting his treasonous ass. Please proceed, Republicans, lash your future prospects to a literal mob boss and in 2022, watch your party shrink to be small enough to drown in a bathtub. People want help, they want a return to normalcy and the contrast between a competent federal government and one run by Republicans will be pretty obvious.

  3. Saturday Meese. 25 degrees here in Kingston, NY going up to 29.

    Just chillin’ today – sitting by the fireplace, and relaxed a little more than on inauguration day – building up energy for the battles ahead.

  4. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 3 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 19. Sunny skies this morning giving way to clouds and snow in the afternoon and overnight – a couple of inches is expected to accumulate.

    Wow, what a week! After processing it all, I think what I feel the most is a sense of relief, like I was just on a long terrible trip; now, the plane has landed, my car was waiting for me at the airport, I drove home, opened the door, sat on my couch and put my feet up. We can now safely look back at the past 5 years as history and not our present or, thank the goddess, our future. There are a ton of things that need to be fixed but we have the right people in power to do it.

    I could not find a President’s Weekly Address link – it is possible that the new White House does not have anything in place yet. President Obama used to do one every Saturday and his press office would post it on the White House web site – and I would post it here! I think the former occupant did one for a few years and then got bored and stopped so the baton will essentially be passed from President Obama to President Biden. In any event, today’s inaugural Weekly Address post will be the literal inauguration Address.

    I have some quiet day projects to do and I need to get a good to-do list for next week. I let a lot of things stack up over the past couple of weeks, waiting for Joe and Kamala and decency to return. Now it is time to get some things done.

    See all y’all later!

  5. Good morning from warm, rainy Austin. I don’t think I’ll even need long sleeves to pick up my groceries this afternoon. They’ve been waiving the fee the past few weeks, so I’m happy to use curbside. Today’s agenda: pick up groceries then cook next week’s lunch. For now I’m watching the news & eating my almond butter sandwich.

  6. Good freezing Saturday morning, Meese! When I took Monty out at twenty past six, a horrible cold wind came howling up the slope to the courtyard. Monty searched desperately for a place to do No. 1, while I, with many curses, urged him to get it over with so we could go back inside.

    This morning the bathroom scales told a horrible story. All right, this is really past a joke. Since I have no intention of walking outside in a 40 mph-wind, I’m going to start going up and down the stairs for 10-15 minutes and then lift weights. Back to the weather: “It’s going to look better than it feels,” the weather guy warned in the WaPo this morning. Right now it’s 29 F., going up to 34 F. with many howling dervish-type winds.

    Work is going well! The nice woman who interviewed me sent a writeup a couple of weeks ago and asked me to add to it as it was under the 600-word requirement. Accordingly, I did so. The improvement is substantial. She was nice enough to compliment it, so I, relieved that she hadn’t taken offense at the almost total rewrite, told her I wanted to have coffee with her as soon as this wretched Covid plague is over. There are numerous people I want to have coffee with one day.

    In other news I received a beautifully colored drawing of the dear-Goddess-knows-what from Mr. First Grader. I tried to figure it out: I could see an envelope, something that looked like a giant cupcake, and a smaller something that looked like an ice cream cone. If he visits, I’ll ask him to interpret it for me.

    Also, I approved the cover design, which I was pleased with because it does look magical, and began reviewing the page proofs. I’ll finish that this weekend, so the team can start work on it Monday morning.

    Starting to recover from the past week. Oh, Goddess, it’s so nice to wake up every morning, knowing everything is in good hands! I’m sorry about poor old Navalny in Russia (three cheers to the demonstrators in Pushkin Square), and sorry about the passing of Hank Aaron. What that poor man had to endure in his lifetime! Things ARE better now. There’s a long, long way to go, but things will continue to improve if all members of all police forces are fired unless they consent to be trained as humans rather than destroyers.

    May everyone at the Pond, and our new President and Vice President, have a good day.

  7. It’s 26 feels like 21 heading for 46 feels like 40. It was sunny when I got up but it’s gotten over it sigh. Yesterday we got 8.3 KWHs (m-t-d 133) but I doubt we’ll get 6 today. I hope we do but I doubt it. Meanwhile cold is mucking with my hands and barometric pressure shifts are mucking with everything else. sigh.

    Meanwhile the relief of twitler being gone and McConnell out of power is measurable. Truly – not for me because I don’t measure such things, but I’ve a friend whose BP has gone down over 30 points since the inauguration. And that is such a relief. Fear of who that rabid squirrel will bite next is gone. As close to normal, or rather a new but still relatively calm, normal is coming back. We will of course/unfortunately always have to fight off the LW, who were screaming about Biden not doing anything before he was even in office, to the delight of the MSM & their fascist owners. But we can do that. It’s a “normal” irritant.

    For the future, for strategy, we’ve got to get as much done as possible as soon as possible so we can hold that 40% white vote rto always talks about. That will take some doing – union jobs is a key to that and since union jobs will come from building green the sooner we can start the better. Yes, building green is for climate change. Too many wypipo don’t believe in climate change and the ones who do don’t believe we can “afford” to do anything about it. But green jobs, union jobs, decent pay depending on gov’t contracts for green building and not pipelines or “defense” – that will get enough of them. Especially since all that money poured into the economy will get it going again. But we must never forget that one full half or more of the white people in this country are Deplorables – fascists – who may or may not be violent but who 100% vote. Our team has got to keep doing what we did in ’18 & ’20 – without the stimulus of a rabid squirrel in the White House.

    My hands are trash but I’m gonna try and boost all the stuff I didn’t do last night because it hadn’t posted when I got offline. And maybe bake something. That’s always comforting. Bright the day, Meeses. {{{HUGS}}}

  8. Good morning, 24 and partly sunny in Bellingham. I basically napped the day away yesterday, went to bed early, and slept in this morning. I think I feel rested now, so I’ll ease into the day and see what happens. I am going to take the colored lights off the porch trees regardless. It’s time to move on to spring, with clear white lights, fake forsythia and pussy willow branch bouquets, and a few blooming primroses.

    Best wishes to all.
